McCarren Pool update - residents want more diverse and/or NO concerts ++ pics of Bloc Party
I never posted these photos from Bloc Party's show at Brooklyn's McCarren Pool on July 29, 2006...

THERE WAS A MEETING LAST WEEK
"...Meanwhile, some residents from Eckford Street implied they would be happy if every performer was told to stay away from the venue. Local artist Yvonne Estrada was the most bitterly vocal, complaining that the high decibel levels prevented her from entertaining guests, or simply enjoying life. 'We're practically in front of the pool,' she said. 'I like rock, but it's not fair to have a performance venue right outside my door.'" [Queens Ledger] (via Brooklyn Record & Gawker)

No ice skating rink this winter in the pool? Wasn't that an idea months ago?

I thought the concerts were over early, at 11pm. What's the problem? People live on top of toxic lands (aka Greenpoint), but only complain about volume? Where are their priorities?

"Estrada said that promoters and musicians would try to impose their high decibel levels anyway. She said the real problem was the city's indifference to those who had lived in the area before it became trendy."
Is she has lived in that area for a long time, why does her website say that shes live in the UES?

talk about cherry picking the most "diverse" looking photographs.

how about some gangsta-rap shows? Is that diverse enough? Norwegian death-metal?

"At the time the concerts were scheduled, [McCarren Pool] was not considered a premiere venue," he said. "The next time we evaluate the fee schedule, we probably will charge a higher price tag."
Weren't they actually giving away tickets for a few of their widly overpriced shows, last year?

Which shows had handouts and how were they made available?

a new venue is always considered the "premiere" venue at first. See- Warsaw, Volume (R.I.P.), etc.
Then it goes out of business or the novelty wears off.

God in heaven you people are morons.
First of all, there's plenty of action in Greenpoint on the environmental issues. But 1) none of you live here and 2) if you do, you're not going to Community Board meetings. You probably don't even know what they are.
Second of all, it's not just an issue of noise, but I can tell you that the shows were more than audible midway through Greenpoint (calyer st.). I can't imagine what it was like next to the park. You sign up for some noise when you live near a park, not hours and hours of amplified music.
Finally, quality of life issues, noise as people walk to and from trains and trash. I know how filthy and noisy the people leaving the indie shows at Studio B are. It wasn't anywhere near that bad when it was a Polish nightclub.

They are quite nice on a hot summers day.

"They are quite nice on a hot summers day."
Typical me-first hipster attitude. Your parents should be ashamed.

Exactly. Why would I live on ground that is toxic? Duh.

The pool is doomed
they should have never bothered with that experiment in the first place

i was 2 blocks away, on lorimer street, during the shows and i couldn't hear much noise at all.

but more importantly, was that girls purse stolen while crowd surfing?
Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2006 10:53 PM
no, but she was fondled.

the Poles didn't mind leasing their "National Home" (Warsaw) to Clear Channel for them to do a bunch of indie rock shows there. Sounds to me like they complain about it when they're not getting a piece of the action.
