My 40 favorite albums of 2006 & then some

I hated making this list. Keep in mind that the below albums were my favorites - most of all because I liked listening to them - at least at some point in the year, and in one setting or another. I would never claim any album is the "best", and I respect all opinions. I think music is subjective, situational, right-time-right-place, etc.. One reason an album might not be on the list = I didn't hear it.
All albums on the list are split into equal groups of ten. Grizzly Bear=Destroyer=Scott Walker=Califone, etc... (I know that pisses some people off.) Here are my 40 favorite albums of 2006....

I think Smut by Sure Juror could of made it up there

i actually think doing it that way makes a lot of sense in some ways, when you really consume so much music.
Posted by bryan | December 19, 2006 9:12 AM
I admire any music fan who creates end-year lists. It's terribly subjective and as BV infers above, so aligned to time and space. My pal Mike wrote once about 'scrolling to a particular song on his pod to paint an appropriate hue on the situation he was walking through...' or something to that effect. Good music fits different moods.

the albert hammond jr album blew. such a let-down.
but there's no excuse for making a list of 40+ albums that came out this year and not mentioning Jeffrey + Jack Lewis.

Delete this once, shame on you. Delete this twicek, shame on...
The Sword - "Age of Winters" belongs. That is all. Thanks.

Pitchfork made a list and now i think i should make a list!
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2006 5:40 PM
I like you're list alot....I'm not sure if you yourself, living in Brooklyn, haven't yet heard of fellow New Yorkers The Epochs, whose debut they self-released last month and decided not to include it on your best of list, (which is the case with most publications), or actually know of them and passed, which would seem crazy. Anyways, just wanted to alert you to what I saw as a glaring omission.
Love the blog....make sure to keep searching for new music on your own...think outside the Pitchfork!
Keep up the good work!
Tim.

Neko Case?
Come on, dude! Don't be such a hipster! Yellow House is not a great record. It's really not. Thank you for not giving TV on the Radio a slot in the top 10 either...but still, GB? uggghhh....People's standards have seriously dropped recently. We need Radiohead to come back and show all these bands, AND especially critics, who so quickly forget, what a great record is.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2006 5:54 PM
i know the epochs, didnt' they have some major label deal in the works? Did it die? are you their manager or something?
best of luck to them
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2006 5:55 PM
anon 5:54, you are an idiot
you obviously aren't listening carefully if you think Yellow House is a poor album

Brian, BV didn't delete your prior mention of The Sword's album; you posted it on a different BV entry, the one about Pitchfork's Best Albums of 2006: http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2006/12/pitchforks_best.html
"anon 5:54, you are an idiot

Anon 5:54 is an idiot for giving BV grief for BV's inclusion of Neko Case, as well.

Hey hipsters and non hipsters,
People like what they like. No one needs a taste-nazi making people feel like shit for the music they like or dislike.
You can't argue what music is good and what music is bad.

What, no Black Angels? No Brother Kite? No Justin Timberlake? (jk)
I still don't understand the Knife. Or Tapes n' Tapes.
I'm real happy to see Mew on there though. Pitchfork totally ignored them even though they gave them a rave review (8.4).

Um... Where is "Fishscale" on the list?
How could you possibly omit what is far and away the best rap album of '06? And the new Clipse? Were there two better rap tracks then "Shakey Dog" and "Trill" released this year?
And come on, the Timberlake LP has to be on here - pop album of the year.
What about the MCR LP? Hate on Emo all you want, this album was kickass.
Also, what about Klaxons "Xan Valleys EP"?
This list is so relentlessly indie blogsnob it makes me want to puke.

Hi~
I too know The Epochs and have been listening to their record alot lately. Yeah, it's weird how they were overlooked but I guess that record came out pretty recently so I don't blame people for not putting it on their lists.
I really love this list, actually though... more than Pitchfork's. The inclusion of Begin to Hope made me really really happy! Regina rules!
Thank you
Posted by Jennifer | December 20, 2006 10:04 AM
No, i'm not their manager, I just saw them play at Bowery Ballroom last month, listened to their record on their website and was blown away and have been spreading the good word about the epochs. i actually don't think they have management yet, or a label.

This list is totally disposable, like the vast majority of music today. Are there more than 2 or 3 albums on this list that anyone will still be listening to 5 years from now, let alone 10 or 20? To prove my point, revisit any hipster "top albums of the year" list from 5 or 10 years ago and think about how many of the entries retain any meaning outside of the moment in time they were created. Of those few that you haven't long ago pawned at the local used CD store, how many do you actually listen to for enjoyment, not just to trot out when you want to get all nostalgic for a meaningful moment or event in your life, like your first lay or that raging party the summer of your senior year? Why would you think the class of '06 will be any different? Where are the albums that at the very least take us somewhere we haven't already been? It's not enough to sound like 1979 or 1980 in 2006. It's been done. And yet the blurbs that usually accompany the entries on these lists (*cough*Pitchfork*cough*) make them sound like magnificent artistic creations that have changed the world. Let's face it, we're living is really shitty times for music and it's not getting any better. It's a joke to believe there are 40 albums that deserve recognition in the past year. I wish it wasn't so. Most of my friends don't listen to anything that was recorded after they were born, let alone this year. That's sad, but it's hardly an anomaly. It's happening all over the country. You're not supposed to listen to the same music your parents listened to, but if you want to hear the good stuff that's what you do. The bar has been set so low these days that anything that doesn't completely suck appears to shine like gold. Sorry, but it's all fool's gold. Enjoy your little nuggets.

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2006 12:58 AM
i've been thinking about it and the way you constructed your list is horseshit, the whole point of making a year end "top (however many)" is to show favoritism and to let people know what you like and how it ranks against the other stuff that you like.
put those albums in order, god damn!

Anonymous, you are right: The Thom Yorke album is WAY worse than "He Poos Clouds." Way, way worse, and doesn't deserve mention. Not that I think "Eraser" is the best album of all time or anything. It's just so obviously more listenable than half the crap on this list.

"what? no love for Scissor Sisters,"
my biggest disappointment of the year :(
"I think Smut by Sure Juror could of made it up there"
haven't given it much of a chance yet really, and wasn't sure where their first album fit in. Really I love them, but they confuse me so I didn't put them in the top 40.
"i actually think doing it that way makes a lot of sense in some ways, when you really consume so much music"
thank you
"i've been thinking about it and the way you constructed your list is horseshit..."
thank you
"...the whole point of making a year end 'top (however many)' is to show favoritism and to let people know what you like...."
says who? at least I made a list...
"I'm still waiting for your list from 2005. Don't think I haven't forgotten."
see what I mean
"how the hell did albert hammond jr didnt make it and grizzly bear is number 1..."
technically grizzly bear is not #1. see above.
"stupid hipsters...that music is garbage compared to albert hammond jr"
anonymous 'albert hammond' / 'strokes new album' / 'you're all hipsters' commenter strikes again
"Pitchfork made a list and now i think i should make a list!"
so make one
"Um... Where is 'Fishscale' on the list? How could you possibly omit what is far and away the best rap album of '06? And the new Clipse?"
Stay tuned for Wes' best hip hop list.
"where the hell is Lucero?"
In Tennessee?
"Who is the woman in the lower left corner...in the photo collage? "
Britta Persson
"Sadly, you forgot: Thom Yorke's The Eraser"
I didn't forget it. I just never really got that into it. I'm listening to it right now though and probably could have - just didn't happen this year.
"Anonymous, you are right: The Thom Yorke album is WAY worse than 'He Poos Clouds.' Way, way worse, and doesn't deserve mention. Not that I think 'Eraser' is the best album of all time or anything. It's just so obviously more listenable than half the crap on this list."

it is weird how listening to Neil Diamond's 12 Songs makes the albums I do own from the list sound shallow and empty by comparison.Older artists in their 60's sound so much more real when singing about heartbreak then 20 somethings.I think that bands today could learn a lot from both Diamond and Dylan's new albums. That real coolness comes from not giving a sheet and being yourself. Not being hipster posers like many bands today.

just wanted to say i really liked your responses to all those people's quetions, BV! I think people get a bit too aggressive, but you responded with humor and grace! I like this website even more now!
Now, I must say...after reading the list above, I DO THINK THOM YORKE'S ALBUM was awesome and should have been on here. SAME WITH THE EPOCHS...actually, I just found out about them now...read about them on here and went to their site and listened. That record should be on here, I think...maybe it will be next year?
Oh, and I THINK GRIZZLY BEAR RULES! What is everyone talking about? That album will be around for a long time! It ain't no disposable garbage!
Ok...I'm getting a bit too emotional here.
Thanks for your list, and for running an awesome site!!

yes it's very cool to list it anywhere but number one.
that record sucks. in a year, no one will listen to it. i can't believe so many smart people are thinking it's a good record.
it's not that its a TERRIBLE record, it's just one that should have been completely ignored, maybe you heard about the band releasing a new record, but thats about it....it shouldn't have gone anywhere. it's a sad state that its topping anyone's lists.
