was it the cops who shot him?
Posted by Anonymous | December 9, 2006 1:24 PM
I hadn't heard of this guy before BV posted this item, nonetheless, I think the second comment above is very, very tasteless.
Posted by someone with a shred of decency | December 9, 2006 2:05 PM
Yes, the comments are very insensitive and stupid.
the state of New York City hip-hop radio stations is in desperate need of reform. their on air bickering and shit talking extends into real life and people are constantly getting shot and some even killed.
I don't want to make any connection with this shooting, there aren't enough details, but it's hard to ignore. there have been multiple shootings outside of HOT 97 in the last 5 years or so, and it has to stop.
Hip-hop needs to get over its fascination with senseless violence, there is too much good music in hip-hop that gets overshadowed by the bullshit.
it.has.to.stop.
Posted by Pete | December 9, 2006 2:45 PM
so stop it.
Posted by trevor | December 9, 2006 6:12 PM
Amen to that Pete, although it would indeed be unfair to connect this particular shooting with those issues, based on what we know so far.

Hip Hop's essense is practically lost when you think of incidents like this. The music we love is being polutted by the ignorance of a few. Collectively we should choose to take responsibility and not only post our feelings, but actually look into steps and making changes. True Hip Hop is so warped to the vast majority, its almost shameless. Bring it back. Cut the bullshit.

Posted by DR PRINCESS | December 10, 2006 5:58 PM
well maybe if the majority stopped listening
to bling blinging gun slinging music like g-unit, etc. the violence/material world wouldn't be as glorified.
Posted by Anonymous | December 10, 2006 5:59 PM
yeah, "polluted by the ignorance of a few"? i'm sure you can list for me a bunch of groups who don't glorify gunplay and drugs, but you would have a hard time arguing that those groups are the rule and not the exception.
the theory on at least one of those shootings outside the 97.1 building is that the dude had himself shot. why? b/c that's the hiphop that sells. in blaze's case, who knows, maybe it was just a robbery gone bad. 13 shots is a lot, but spend a day in any trauma center: you see a lot more violence perpetrated for a lot more trivial reasons.

Interesting debate on the nature of hip hop. However it seems like maybe this guy was just held up for his jewelery. Protect ya neck!
Posted by ben | December 11, 2006 7:43 AM
Wearing a $25,000 gold and diamond neck chain IS part of the "nature of hip hop."

It's crazy the streets nowadays you know.. I mean I know it always has been but not like this. Too many people are dropping like flies in the streets, I've lived in the hood for all my life so I'm used to it but little kids growing up nowadays shouldn't, kids 5,6,7 years old saying stuff like "I'll push the barrel in ya mouth and I'll blow ya brains out" they don't what their saying cuz their not old enough to know. I'm not trying to rag on Hip-Hop, I love it. It's also mostly the parents fault for letting their children listen to it. But then they can't help it because the parent listen to it too. I just call em as I see em

Erica, nice thought (x6) but I don't think Carl is reading BV right now. Sending a card to his room at Harlem Hospital might be a better idea.

1) I've been listening to Hip Hop since 1983
2) Hip Hop is dead, Nas has it right
3) Violence and hip hop have been bed fellows since the begining because hip hop culture was created in poor urban areas.
4) Violance and materialism in hip hop is out of control and there will eventually be a huge backlash
5) Hip hop needs another Chuck-D or KRS-1 to flip the script and make socially conscious rap popular again.
6) Hip hop's "don't be a snitch" mentality is ridiculous. Every majot rap killing/crime goes unsolved.
7) at one point, hip hop looked like it could be a teacher and a positive influence, but it's been hijacked by corporate america and instead keeps the youth ignorant and focused on material gain and "keeping it real"...which basically says, "Don't ever stop acting like a ignorant poor person, no matter how old and educated and successful you are".
8) modern day popular Rap music has set back race relations decades. Rap music and videos only reinforce negative stereotypes. Call it like it is...most of today's Rappers look and act like uneducated, foolish, pimps.
9) If it weren't for Jay Z, Nas, Common and others in the underground hip hop movement, hip hop would have no credibility.
10) Hip Hop and Rap are 2 TOTALLY different things. I think MC-Lyte says it best when she claims, "I am not a rapper, I am a Hip Hop artist"
11)Finally...Sorry Carl Blaze, but any hip hop celebrity who would go out of their house wearing $25k+ around their neck in NY is asking to be the victim of a violent robbery. He is not the first and will not be the last...

Why can't people stop blaming Hip Hop!!!!
Carl was shot maybe by someone else who liked hip hop maybe not.....People, this is NY do you realize how many people listen to Hip Hop, Dress Hip Hop, and talk Hip Hop in NY. And How many of them, have made it to the spot light, and have become successfull because of and thanks to HIP HOP.
Why is it that when something bad happns to a hip hop celebrity, or icon, the focus is on hip hop.
I don't get it.
So what,if the music contains lyrics of violence, or Drugs..Hip Hop keeps it real!!!!
Another person comented; "3) Violence and hip hop have been bed fellows since the begining because hip hop culture was created in poor urban areas."
This is very true, and yes poor people do crazy things, And one thing that many of us who came up in the hood have in common is the way we express our selves. We do it very clearly, we don't hold punches. We say it like it is. That is why a lot of the lyrics are so RAW. We have no hair on our tongues and "keep it real". We have attitude, you see it in our clothing, our cars, we are stylish, and flashy..but really people, are those characteristics only found in people who have been a part of hip hop or just came up in a poor urban area? No!!
..What are we saying?
People who enjoy heavy metal don't use weapons? Young Sub Urban kids don't use drugs?
The white Collar man doesn't steal, rape, rob, or cheet one another?
Yeah RIGHT!!! there is more violence, and secrets with and about theese people then we can imagine or will probably never hear about. Why? because they are not as confident and honest and outgoing as us Hip Hoppers" are. They just aren't as noticed. They hide out........
I personally trust the word of a fellow "Hip Hop lover", someone who been through the hood, and gets noticed when misbehaves because cant afford big pricy lawyers.. before I beleive some, stuck up, unexperienced, shallow person, who is ashamed to be themselves.
See, it really has nothing to do with the music we listen too..maybe its the struggle we have face'd being poor at onetime or another. And it is defenetly the effort of the rich to keep us down, make there unhonest, fakse characters seem more glorified.
I Love Hip Hop and it is ashame what happen to Carl Blaze, but don't let theese media monsters do it again....Blame hip hop, that is...
It's not "Hip Hop" to blame.
Hip Hop can not and should not be described as negative.
This is how our farthers who come from poor urban places, have taught us to be ourselves, a way to be real, a way not to be ashamed of were we come from. Hip hop makes me feel good, and I am thankful to Hip Hop.
Carl Blaze God Bless, rest in peace, and take your Love of HIP HOP with. Heaven needs some Hip Hop!!!!!!

I agree with "TheNewProof".
The words in most of the music today are stupid and ugly. Talking shit about women, calling her "the Bitch" and how she needs to get smacked. Bottom line is that people today have an attitude of " it's all about ME" and nobdy has respect for other people. What ever happened to treating people the way I want to be treated. People have become selfish. The world is in a horrible place and has been for some time.

Maddie... Heaven needs Hip Hop? I surely DOUBT that. I'm sorry he was shot and passed but somehow I don't think that heaven is the place for hip hop. You may want to re-think that one.. Oh and Jessie.. Dam is spelled Damn.. Learn how to spell fool.. And Desi, you make a valid point.. I agree with you.. That made me think.. maybe the others should start doing the same thing.

How interesting that the vast majority of the posts on this site are littered with incorrect spelling, bad grammar, wrong punctuation and debates over whether Carl Blaze was a .
As an educator in the New York, I see firsthand the injustice that rap and hip hop continually do to our young people. It glorifies all that is wrong with society, i.e. violence, crime, disrespect, etc., etc. It makes me sick to see the artists declaring "love" for the "ghetto" and it's residents while at the same time perpetuating the behavior that keeps these kids in a cycle of poverty, crime and violence.
Wouldn't it be more efficient to encourage these children to get an education in order to obtain a career that could steer them out of the inner-cities? Wouldn't it make more sense to encourage these children to have respect for everyone, including and probably most importantly, themselves?
These celebrities who rap and/or sing about violence do not care an ounce about anyone but themselves. They are self-serving idiots who only want to make money at the expense of young, impressionable children.
While I know that certainly not all the rap/hip hop artists and their fans are uneducated, I do know from personal experience that those who listen to this garbage are less likely to graduate from high school, are less likely to go on to college, are less likely to hold a steady job and are more likely to fall into and remain in poverty.
I understand this is a popular form of expression; I just wish that those expressing themselves had more concern for the way their expressions affect impressionable young people.
On a more personal note, my thoughts go out to the family of Carl Blaze.

May God rest his soul and comfort his loved ones. Common, but honest questions where asked on the radio yesterday: "When does it stop?" and "What do we do next?". Hopefully we all learn something from this and continue to honor his legacy, to be able to love everyone like he had. His family will be in my prayers. God bless.

Tara whoever you are although you make a few good points you speak very ignorantly and have no clue of the "struggle" it's easy to point a finger looking from the outside in.You really think the music that poeple listen to plays a factor to howmuch or how far of an education a child receives, well your F*****ing stupid.growing up low-incone area(da hood) and haveing little or close to no money at all plus very few resources im preety sure plays a part in the education or lack thereof the children in low-income area(da hood) receives. But im preety sure with the platform and money that our hip hop artists receive once they make out da hood they can really try to give more back to the community some artists claim they love the hood but don't go back and try to uplift the situation. instead writting old boring songs of howmuch time they got shot.MAY GOD BLESS, KEEP AND SAVE ALL OF DJ CARL BLAZE'S FREINDS.

Before HipHop culture arrived their was violence. Who were the culprits then? Oh yeah we made up the devil for that. Many people want to point the finger at hiphop because it is convenient to cast blame elsewhere. Human Nature is the true reason for violence. Jack The Ripper Im sure was listening to DMX when he committed some of the most atrocious murders in history lol itz a joke. In a world filled with violence rapperz, hip hop is not a genre btw, tend to invoke a lot of its imagery in their rymes. A rapper only can rap about his world as he sees it, so if he knew violence he will speak about traumatic run-ins with it. Carl Blaze, regardless of why he was shot, is just another example of human nature's violent tendency and mankind's lack of understanding. Carl Blaze was a good dude from what I knew. But even a good dude can make an error in judgement. He was in the hood, a bad hood at that, and placed too much trust in his Dominican peoples love for his success. 16 shots sounds personal, anyone thinking a botched robbery gets you 16 is a fool. RIP Carl Blaze with all these people who aint know you shitting on your name how is death any different than life? You should let the man rest in peace and stop speculating because he touched a lot of peoples lives and a lot of people hurt when they read shit like some of the things I have read on this blog.

Carl Blaze's death probaly has more to do with a couple of enveous not to mention broke dude's who robbed and killed someone more than it has to do with hip hop.Everytime an african american is killed it must be hip hop fault or rap music,so i guess everytime a white person is murdered it's rock music's fault isn't it?Fons is correct before hip hop arrived there was violence.MAY GOD SAVE KEEP AND BLESS ALL OF CARL BLAZE'S FAMILY AND FREINDS

God bless Carl Blaze, his fam and friends. Much love too for the people that share the same love i have for HipHop.
I wanted to react on the piece written by a teacher.
First of all, the grammar and punctuation that someone uses should never be seen as an indication of how much intelligence one person has. I probably got some errors in this here piece too because i'm Dutch but that doesn't mean i don't understand the simple standards and values of men. Being ethical has nothing to do with the words one uses to express himself (and by that i don't mean that using the word *fuck* 3 times in one sentence because that's just lacking discipline).
Secondly and most importantly, this here teacher that downtalks HipHop obviously doesn't understand what it's about. You can't possibly blame a cultural spirit&mind&body for the evil of men. I can be HipHop but i can still kill a person. That just means that i'm not true to my inner self. HipHop ain't about killing but it can be about defending ones territory against invaders or just bad motherf... for that matter.
If a dumb dude listens to HipHop and decides to go rap and then starts killing people it just means that he isn't smart enough to relate, analyze, comprehend and what it means to act on thoughts. And it certainly doesn't mean that his raps are HipHop ---> You can be HipHop and rap about it, but you can also rap and not be HipHop, that just means you jack the style and violate morals.
On a last note:
I still wanna thank the teacher for commenting the way she did because it really made me think about some stuff.
God bless the world, HipHop and all other forms of music.

Yo, I was wondering what happened to Carl Blaze. I kept hearing this new bitch, Nadine. She's aight but i was wondering what had happened to him. Thought he got fired or somethin. As it turns out, it would have been better if i had found out he was fired instead of finding out he dead. That's fucked up. First Anna Nicole now this shit.

That's crazy that an obviously hot dj could have been killed but goes to show that crime or hate doesn't have a face. DJ's should never die. You can never replace that second or minute of greatness that ascends amongst the population.L

This aint about records and CD's. This was about a dude walking around the hood with $20,000 around his neck.. and having the wrong person / people see it. Or at least be aware of it, via pics.
The prisons are filled with these heartless, cold-blooded killers ... not the studio!
