NYC clubs Crobar, Pink Elephant & Sol reopening

SolI know you have other places to be, but I still thought you might want to know that, after being shut down by the cops the other day, Crobar and Sol are reopening this weekend. Sol says:

Sol is pleased to announce that it will official begin operations today, with its first party this Friday, January 12, 2007, with Sol Fridays and Sexy Saturdays at Sol. In addition, next week, Sol is pleased to welcome nightlife legend Michael T. to celebrate his 40th birthday on Thursday night, January 18, 2007 @ 10 PM featuring live performances, rock music and a unique nightlife experience.
Sol also says "The settlement reached is not in any way an admission of guilt or admission of any wrongdoing on Sol’s behalf". More in a press release below...

New York, NY Jan 10 -- Today, Sol is pleased to announce that it has officially reopened after last week’s closure by the NYPD and City of New York. Sol, working closely with the NYPD is taking several steps to ensure the club’s patrons a safe and fun time in and around Sol.

Sol will continue to take pro-active steps to ensure the safety of its patrons by working closely with the 10th Precinct to combat all drug-related activity in the area, and reaffirming its ZERO tolerance for drugs and violence. Sol is happy to work closely with the NYPD in helping to curb under-age drinking and fake id use. With these additional security precautions, some of which Sol has already implemented, Sol, its owners, managers and employees look forward to providing a safe legal and fun nightlife experience.

“We will be open for business again this weekend and look forward to welcoming everyone back to Sol. We will continue to be an industry leader and good neighbor within our community, serving as an example of how NYC nightlife should be,” says James Tobin, a Partner at Sol.

The settlement reached is not in any way an admission of guilt or admission of any wrongdoing on Sol’s behalf.

Old Knit (Knitting Factory) 20th Anniversary show @ Town Hall

Knitting FactoryCelebrate 20 years of the Knitting Factory......at Town Hall! Tickets are on sale for the March 1st show. There's special stuff happening AT Knitting Factory too (like four nights of Jonathan Richman), but this is just a special thing Michael Dorf is doing to benefit The Stone. The show will feature "live performances by John Zorn, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Medeski Martin & Wood, Mike Doughty, Joe Lovano, Marc Ribot, Lee Ranaldo, Don Byron - plus surprise guests and friends." Press release below...

----

NEW YORK-(Business Wire)-January 11, 2007 - With the recent closure of two seminal "downtown" clubs — CBGB and The Bottom Line — the Knitting Factory's survival to reach a 20-year milestone is cause for celebration. Michael Dorf founded the venue on Houston Street, almost equidistant between CBGB and The Bottom Line, in late February 1987. The club quickly emerged as a home for the sounds that did not neatly fit into the categories of jazz or rock, becoming the downtown home for the burgeoning improvisational jazz community, as well as, the preferred venue for the growing alternative rock scene. This eclectic programming combined with Mr. Dorf's ambitious marketing and entrepreneurial skills quickly established the "Knit" brand as one of the important venues in New York, in addition to gaining status as an international symbol of the "downtown" scene.

Artists as diverse as Sonic Youth, Cassandra Wilson, Yo La Tengo, Cecil Taylor, and Bill Frisell could be found on the stage in a single week. From 1987 to 1994 the venue lived at 47 E. Houston Street, before the neighborhood became known as "NoLiTa". The New York Times said of Michael Dorf in 1987, "The Knitting Factory has almost single-handedly revised New York's downtown arts scene in its first six months of operation. Presenting Jazz and improvised music, along with films, poetry, performance art and dance, it's putting on affordable, genre-crossing double bills every night of the week." Rolling Stone Magazine said of club in 1991, "It's rare for a club to act as a magnet for talent, drawing a new scene around itself. But in New York City, where the Knitting Factory has become synonymous with new music, that's precisely what's happening."

From the inception through 1996, Michael Dorf was the sole owner of the Knitting Factory moving the club to Tribeca and building the recording business festival business. He created KnitMedia, during the dot-com economy, as the umbrella company to the Knitting Factory club in NY and soon to open state-of-the-art club in Los Angeles. By 1999, as the Chairman and CEO, Mr. Dorf grew to over 100 employees and worked with Apple Computer, Intel Computer, Bell Atlantic, and MCI among others, on a number of ground breaking developments helping usher in a wave of music and internet ventures. In 1999, Inc. Magazine named KnitMedia, one of the top 500 fastest growing businesses in America. New York Magazine, named Michael Dorf one of the ten most important New Yorkers that year. -0- *T Michael Dorf's 20th Anniversary Concert "The Old Knit" MARCH 1, 2007 AT TOWN HALL, NYC CONCERT AT TOWN HALL WILL FEATURE WORLD RENOWN ARTISTS INCLUDING: LAURIE ANDERSON, JOHN ZORN, MEDESKI/MARTIN/WOOD, MIKE DOUGHTY, JOE LOVANO, MARC RIBOT, LEE RANALDO, DON BYRON, LOU REED AND OTHERS. the week in Dance w/ David Bruno (01/11/07)

David Bruno is back with his second weekly installment of 'the week in dance'....

----

Thanks to everyone who came out and got busy at Element on Friday night. People Don't Dance No More is off to a roaring start. Stay tuned for news on the February 23 edition!

SYIP @ Club Element, NYC | Jan 5, 2007
Slap You in Public

Last week I highlighted the Ed Banger crew from Paris. This week I want to start to highlight some of the amazing dance talent here in NYC...

DOWNLOAD: Drop The Lime Resonance FM DJ Mix (MP3)

DOWNLOAD: Passions - at war with Satan mix (MP3)

DOWNLOAD: Mathhead x Mishka - Doom & Bass mix (MP3)

DOWNLOAD: Mathhead - Troublemix! (MP3)

DOWNLOAD: Starkey - Starkey Trouble and Bass mix (MP3)

Trouble and BassThe TROUBLE & BASS crew has been breaking down boundaries between electronic genres for quite awhile. Their core roster includes ringmaster Drop the Lime (DTL), as well as mathhead, Zack Shadetek & Star Eyes.

They've all been known to mash grime with break-core, and electro with jungle. Their only goal is maximum BASS. The crew has been involved with some of the craziest regular parties in Brooklyn, from Bangers & Mash to Mad Suspect, and their new monthly Trouble & Bass party.

Trouble and BassNot only do they throw rippin' parties, they are some of the most prolific producers I've ever encountered. Look at these Discogs pages: Drop The Lime + Team Shadetek...insane!

DTL and mathhead just put out an EP entitled Bass Bandits on Philly's Flamin' Hotz. Pick it up at Turntable Lab. The next Trouble & Bass EP is out in March via SEED distribution.

Trouble & Bass just added two new producers that have been setting the internets on fire: Curses! and Passions. Serious Parisian purveyors of future music immediately picked up both kids. Curses! has an EP dropping on Institubes in the Spring, and Passions is putting out a single with Kitsune in March or April. Very big news for the NYC crew.

Download the above mixes, but don't listen on an empty stomach - and turn down your speakers.

El Perro Del Mar | 2007 Tour Dates (SXSW?) + Joe's Pub pics

DOWNLOAD: El Perro Del Mar - God Knows (MP3)

"This album really took me by surprise. For some reason I initially wrote it off as something twee and not my cup of tea, but then I gave it a second shot and after a few listens found myself hooked on her brand of melancholia. The songs are simple, repetitive, yet weirdly have infinite playability for me. I have yet to get sick of this one...not sure if I will anytime soon." [Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste on El Perro Del Mar]

El Perro Del Mar @ Joe's Pub | Nov 13, 2006
El Perro Del Mar @ Joes Pub

I saw El Perro Del Mar play Joe's Pub back in November when she played 4 NYC shows in a row. I don't think I ever posted about it because this website was all messed up at the time. It was also around the time I was obsessively listening to her self-titled album (the one Ed Droste expresses his love for above) - it was that obsessive period that led me to list her album as one of my favorites of 2006.

The Joe's Pub show was good - not spectacular or anything - she sounded like the album, so see her if you like the album (which at least one person I'm close to DOESN'T).

Is El Perro Del Mar big enough to play Bowery Ballroom? (are Under Byen?). Because that's where she's playing on March 1st. All tour dates & more pics below....

"Last week, the Austin Chronicle reported that officials at SXSW are delaying the release of their huge band list. The rationale is that a late release will cut down on the rampant day party scene from last year since party planners won't know who is playing until late in the game. Given the unbridled love we have for day parties, we have our doubts about the effectiveness of these tactics, but that still doesn't get you a band list, does it?" [Austinist]

lost Brooklyn goat now safe @ Farm Sanctuary

Goat
not the actual goat or brooklyn

"On Saturday, January 6, Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, welcomed Joey the goat to its New York Shelter. A young goat around six months old, was found on Wednesday, January 3, wandering among pedestrians in Brooklyn, New York in a busy intersection on Hoyt Street. The Brooklyn branch of Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C) was called in to rescue him, after receiving a call from a local resident. Joey is a Boer goat, a larger breed originally from South Africa. Given his ear tag, Brooklyn AC&C determined he must have escaped a slaughterhouse." [Farm Sanctuary]

Sixteen days earlier a baby calf escaped in Brooklyn.

----

Looking for something to do outside the city one weekend? Stay at Farm Sanctuary's Bed & Breakfast. You'll get to meet the goat and hang out with all their other animals too.

Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon (01/10/07)

Klaus is back with week two of his 'comedy canon'.
Don't know what this is? See week one.

Paul F. Tompkins @ Comix, NYC | Jan 5, 2007
Paul Tompkins

On Friday January 5th, I attended a spectacular comedy show at Comix featuring Paul F. Tompkins, Kristin Schaal, and John Mulaney. Yes, comedy clubs are often frowned upon within the alt. comedy community, but I have to say that Comix is really a great club - especially when compared to a place like Caroline’s and other NYC ‘comedy clubs’ (…don’t get me wrong; Caroline’s books great acts, but it’s way out of my price range).

John MulaneySure, Comix has that signature clean, classy atmosphere, but the cover there is quite reasonable and you aren’t nailed with any two-drink minimum nonsense. And you really couldn’t beat the January 5th line-up. John Mulaney served as the main opener-slash-show MC and completely aced his set before handing the mic over to Kristen Schaal. I haven’t seen Mulaney in a while so a lot of his material felt very fresh to me, whereas Schaal’s material felt too familiar having just seen her at the Invite Them Up show at Bowery last month. The highlight of Schaal’s set for me was the look of utter confusion on the girls' faces sitting just in front of the stage; they kept looking at each other like Kristen was speaking some completely whacked out alien language.

Tompkins really stole the show though. His set varied from flawless riffing and improv, to obviously well rehearsed yet extremely hilarious bits. I caught him at the Invite Them Up show at Bowery as well, but was inebriated enough at the time that his set seemed brand spanking new to me now. And I sat two tables over from Tom Scharpling and his wife; not surprising considering Paul F. Tompkins was a guest on his show on January 2nd.

Langhorne SlimThe following evening, January 6th, I headed further downtown to catch the always incredible Moonwork: An Evening of Original Works show. These monthly shows shatter the principles of New York City economics; for $20 you get to see 4-5 comedians, musicians, and monologists, and you get all the Harp, Amstel, and Heineken you can drink. The venue is a large, airy gymnasium-turned-nightclub that gets full, but never feels uncomfortably crowded. This installment of Moonwork consisted of Andre du Bouchet, Jane Borden, Eric Slovin, Todd Barry, Langhorne Slim, and Tom Shillue. Langhorne Slim and Tom Shillue were the true stand-out acts of the evening. I found Langhorne's seemingly improvised set to be some of the most excellently executed solo folk I have seen in a while. And being a Boston native myself, I found Tom's tales of living in Dorchester with his mother and retarded uncle both side splittingly hilarious and heartwarming. It was such a wonderful blend of monologue and stand-up. As a Bostonian living in New York, the fact that he worked Liz Walker into his stand-up routine made me somewhat homesick.

John Mayer ComedyLet's jump into this week’s Comedy Canon by revisiting an article posted on The Apiary. Mom-rocker John Mayer is back on the stand-up circuit. Apparently, he crashed a showcase at the Comedy Cellar and did a 10-minute set that was surprisingly pretty funny. Chris Serico was there and compiled a fantastic "Ten Things" list. I can personally identify with #4 - Body Shaping was in very close proximity to The Price is Right in the morning TV line-up.

I’ve always found Sacha Baron Cohen to be a profoundly funny comedian & actor. He is best known for his characters Ali G, Bruno and, of course, Borat. He is also known for snubbing those who want to interview him. Incredibly NPR managed to get him on their 'Fresh Air' program on January 4th.

Comedians of ComedyPatton Oswalt’s website is closed for a complete overhaul, but his page holder reveals that the site will go back online the same day the Comedians of Comedy DVD is released (Tuesday, January 30th). He also alludes to the possibility that the Comedians of Comedy will hit Noise Pop, Cochella and, possibly, Bonnaroo.

Speaking of DVD releases, Zach Galifianakis posted a bulletin on myspace saying that his DVD Live at the Purple Onion will be available on Netflix beginning January 16, 2007. It won’t be available for purchase by the general public until March 6th. Watch a Zach video at YouTube.

All female variety powerhouse Variety Shac take their once-a-month-at-Galapagos showcase to the UCB Theater on January 17th at 9:30pm. Hosted by Shonali Bhowmik, Heather Lawless, Andrea Rosen, and Chelsea Peretti, the show is a mere $5.00.

MArijuanaloguesIn the span of one week, Comix has a huge pile of great shows happening. Janeane Garofalo is doing 5 shows with Marc Maron between January 11th and January 13th. Andy Kaufman award winner and all around music and comedy virtuoso Reggie Watts is doing a single show on January 14th. And then Doug Benson, Arj Barker, and Tony Camin bring their doobie-centric monologues to Comix for 5 performances of The Marijuana-Logues. These 5 shows happen between the 17th and the 20th . If you haven’t been to Comix yet, these are 11 really solid reasons to check the place out.

BV CMJ show veteran Dave Hill brings the explosion back to NYC for the first time since October, 2006. Reserve tickets now for The Dave Hill Explosion at the UCB Theater on January 11th where he will be joined by Coast of Utopia cast member Martha Plimpton and musician Simon Scott.

As I mentioned earlier, the only real draw back to Caroline's is the cost. However, sometimes a show comes along that is so incredible that one must really consider biting the bullet and making a reservation. Sarah Silverman's 4 performances between 1/30 and 1/31 would be such an occasion. These are 4 shows that I can safely say will sell out regardless of cover charge, so I recommend calling 212-757-4100 ASAPs yo. Oh, and someone sent me a very base and immature Sarah Silverman Survey. Enjoy, sicko.

Sarah Silverman

CA BENEFIT
East Coast and West Coast comedians are banding together to help the fight against cancer. On Monday January 15th, the UCB Theater in LA is hosting Rob Corddry Hates Cancer: A Benefit. Hosted by former Daily Show correspondent Rob Corddry, the show's line-up includes Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show), Patton Oswalt (Comedians of Comedy), Kate Walsh, (Grey's Anatomy), Nate Corddry and Steven Weber (Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip), Naked Babies and more. The show is only $20.00 and all proceeds benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

NYC BENEFIT
Then here in New York on Tuesday January 16, BV CMJ show veteran Sarah Schaeffer will host CANCER BLOWS: A Comedy Show to Benefit Cancer Research at Mo Pitkins. The show will feature Todd Barry, Michelle Collins, Amanda Melson, Valley Lodge, Jenny Rubin, Jon Friedman, and more. They will also be auctioning off some pretty sweet items. Buy your tickets here. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

An invaluable resource on the internet for interviews with comedians is One Trick Pony. Ben Kharakh has interviewed pretty much everybody who’s somebody in world of comedy. Some of the comedians are fairly mainstream, while others are staples of the alternative comedy circuit. If you have the time, explore this vast resource of interviews. If you don’t have the time, make it.

In other news:

  • I am still reeling from the The San Francisco Sketch Fest line-up

  • This is what's wrong with comedy, and America

  • Invite Them Up is back from holiday hiatus.

  • The Ten, directed by David Wain (Stella, The State), written by David Wain and Ken Marino (Stella, The State), and starring Paul Rudd, Joe Lotruglio, Adam Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Rob Corddry, Kerri Kenny, Gretchen Mol, Oliver Platt, Winona Ryder, Liev Scheiber, Mather Zickel, Justin Thereoux, Jessica Alba, Michael Showalter, Ken Marino, and Zak Orth premiers at Sundance on 1/19!

  • My new years resolution is to see more A.S.S.S.C.A.T.!!!. SNL's Horatio Sanz and Amy Poehler are at UCB NYC every Sunday nigt.

  • The State's Kevin Allison is launching a new website! It will have comedy videos, old and new, and you'll be able to read all about upcoming projects and appearances, including Kevin's latest work with other members of The State. I saw him at a recent installment of Bro'in Out and it was triumphant.

  • Rififi is still the best place to see comedy in NYC. Hands down.
Mr. Show bloopers not available on any DVD....

NYC band/duo Shy Child are going on a tour of the UK in February, but not before they play a hometown show at Mercury Lounge on January 31st.

Born Ruffians are visiting NYC from Canada to play two shows with Peter Bjorn and John. Those shows are way sold out, so luckily Born Ruffians added a third show - also January 31st @ Mercury Lounge.

That's two bands who have toured with Hot Chip for the price of one. Ra Ra Riot and Vampire Weekend are also on the bill.

Malkmus Maxwell's sold out, but Plug Awards on sale

The Stephen Malkmus show at Maxwell's sold right out. One disgruntled message board member wrote:

WHAT THE HELL!!?!?!?! The tickets were listed on TicketWeb but never became available for sale. It said it would be available at 12 and I kept refreshing the screen. At about 12:06 it was simply listed as SOLD OUT. WHAT THE HELL!?!?!?!?!
That sucks - luckily (sort of) $10+$3.40fee tickets are still on sale for his slightly-larger-venue performance at the Plug Awards the previous day - though keep in mind that his set there will only be about 40 minutes - they have a lot of awards to give out - and Deerhoof, Tokyo Police Club, Silversun Pickups, and El-P are playing too.

90's legend & 3rd Bass member MC Serch just started his search for a great white rapper, BUT in better news - March will see a digital-only release of the shelved 1994 album M.any Y.oung L.ives A.go (Def Jam). I've listened to it and it's a total throwback to the gritty east coast sound of those days. Great stuff. Download Handle It above. A BV Exclusive.

After a month of slow release weeks, finally there are some albums worth buying this week. I am headed out this morning to pick up Neko Case's live disc, Ron Sexsmith's Time Being, and the bluegrass tribute to the Shins (for my wife). I can definitely recommend the new album, Sing You Sinners, by singer-songwriter Erin McKeown and the Autumn Defense disc.

What are your recommendations from this list? have I omitted anything worthy of consideration?

CD releases:

The Autumn Defense: The Autumn Defense [cd]
Erin McKeown: Sing You Sinners [cd]
Green Day: 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour [cd]
Green Day: Kerplunk (reissue) [cd]
Johnny Cash: Live from Austin, TX (remastered) [cd]
Neko Case: Live from Austin, Texas [cd]
P.F. Sloan: Measure of Pleasure [cd]

60 yr old DAVID BOWIE bringing DANIEL JOHNSTON to NYC HIGHLINE Festival in MAY (9-19) (+ TVOTR & Arcade Fire?)

DOWNLOAD: David Bowie - Changes (MP3)

Happy Birthday David Bowie! "David Robert Jones" was born on January 8, 1947. Today he's 60 years old, so the BBC listed sixty things about him

David Bowie

Back in May 2006 (when he was just 59) we found out that David's curating the May 2007 Inaugural HighLine Festival in NYC.

As part of the programming, Bowie will play a large outdoor concert, his first show in New York since 2003. He will also select musicians and artists to appear throughout the festival.[from here]
Since then, the HighLine Festival got its own website. I found out in message boards that the website at some point revealed the exact festival dates to be May 9-18 - and then May 9-19 (ten days!). Currently the website just reads "Coming May 2007".

It's public knowledge that Bowie loves The Secret Machines, TV on the Radio, and Arcade Fire, so it's no surprise that the rumors say "Arcade Fire and TV On The Radio are frontrunners to headline the event".

Will TV on the Radio and/or Arcade Fire actually play the event though? TV on the Radio just announced a big tour that doesn't include a NYC date, and they'll be home about 20 days before May 9th. Looks like the chances are good for TVOTR.

Arcade Fire ARE definitely playing multiple shows in NYC in May, but I don't have faith that any of those shows will actually be associated with the HighLine Festival. I think instead Arcade Fire will just play a few shows at a regular venue on their tour to support the new album. We'll have to wait to find out though - currently they've only announced the pre-tour special church shows.

[Do you have all three new/leaked Arcade Fire tracks yet (Intervention, Black Wave/Bad Vibrations, & Black Mirror)??]

So, who will play the 9-10 day Highline Festival besides Bowie, and possibly TV on the Radio, and less possibly Arcade Fire? Well, I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that David Bowie is bringing to NYC - an artist who I right-now want to see more than all of them - yes, it's the one and only Daniel Johnston...

Daniel Johnston @ Emo's, Austin, TX | Dec 16, 2006 (CRED)
Daniel Johnston @ Emos

Those familiar will Daniel Johnston's career should know about Daniel's latest project Danny & The Nightmares. Those not familiar with Danny's career haven't seen the amazing documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. That is easily corrected. The cover looks like this:

Daniel Johnston

Danny and the Nightmares played a bunch of shows in Texas recently - that includes one at Rudyard's on New Years Eve, and one at Emo's on December 16th (maybe they'll play SXSW?). The pictures in this post are from the Emo's show...

Daniel Johnston @ Emo's, Austin, TX | Dec 16, 2006 (CRED)
Daniel Johnston @ Emos

Nothing against Danny and his Nightmares, but it looks like Bowie (a known Daniel Johnston fan) is indeed bringing Daniel to NYC in his actual, pure Johnston form - and for that I'll celebrate his 60th birthday extra hard this Sunday the 14th at the NYC Bowie Ball.

Idolator's 2006 Jackin' Pop results are in

Jackin Pop

Those following along basically know that Gawker media's newish music blog Idolator decided to do their own version of the Village Voice's annual Pazz and Jop poll this year. Pazz & Jop is the thing where a zillion critics submit their picks for the year's best music.

Idolator chose a dude named Michaelangelo Matos to run the project. Michaelangelo in turn was fired or banned from one of the Voice's parent company's other papers where he was also/previously working. At first I (and maybe Gawker too) thought that the Village Voice wasn't doing Pazz and Jop this year since Robert Christgau was fired and all that related bad stuff happening at the Voice. That was the rumor anyway. Ends up the Village Voice IS still doing it which means there are two competing surveys that critics and fans can choose to be associated with this year.

Idolator's critic policy seemed to be a lot more lenient, and so they supposedly got a lot more ballot submissions (like Pitchfork's Amy Philips, Rolling Stone's Anthony DeCurtis, Idolator's own Brian Raferty & Maura Johnston, ex-Voice employee Chuck Eddy, ex-Voice employee Robert Christgau himself, Time Out's Jay Ruttenberg, Tofu Hut's John Seroff, Fluxblog's Matthew Perpetua, Stylus' Todd Burns, Doveman's Thomas Bartlett, AND "YETI"). Critics can also submit to both - that's what Christgau is definitely doing. Current Village Voice employees were warned NOT to submit to Jackin' Pop........which is now complete.....

Highlights from The Idolator 2006 Jackin' Pop Critics Poll:

* Michaelangelo Matos' opening remarks

* Gnarls Barkley = Artist of the Year

* TV On the Radio = Album of the Year

Stay tuned for what the Voice comes up with in February, and check out Heartonastick who's still busy compiling the blog version of this all.

BEACH HOUSE opening for fellow Pitchfork fav Grizzly Bear + WAY MORE

DOWNLOAD The Neurotics - Surfin' U.S.A. (MP3)

Grizzly Bear on the beach

We've already discussed the fact that the band Beach House were popular on the Internet in '06. That didn't stop me from being surprised that their song Apple Orchard made #8 on Pitchfork's "Top 100 Tracks of 2006" list. Almost equally surprising was Beach House's whole self-titled album making #16 on Pitchfork's list of top albums. That's a better score than the Thermals, Yo La Tengo, Hot Chip, Califone, Cat Power, Lily Allen, Belle and Sebastian and even Destroyer. It's not as good as Grizzly Bear though - they were the owners of #8 on the albums list.

Beach House has been added as an opener at the March 6th Grizzly Bear show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC...which is messed up because according to Stereogum Beach House puts on the better show (I kid). Papercuts are also opening at this and many other Grizzly Bear shows.

David Byrne's freak folk radio playlist -- "playing" SXSW

David Byrne @ Pop Montreal | OCT 05, 2006 (CRED)
David Byrne

David Byrne's latest streaming radio show contains songs by many of the artists he has playing Carnegie Hall in February. In March, David will make a speaking (and hopefully singing) appearance at SXSW in Austin this year:

Byrne returns to SXSW in 2007 with a special presentation. "Record Labels: Who Needs Them?" examines the state of affairs among purveyors of recorded music. From his perspective as artist, label owner and musical enthusiast, Byrne will discuss the options available to artists in an age where retail and radio infrastructure is shrinking, and digital technology has changed how music is recorded, distributed and promoted. Byrne's manager, David Whitehead, will also speak and facilitate the session.
It's the same topic David covered at Pop Montreal. For posterity, David's complete current radio playlist below...

Times favorite Kiki & Herb add more Joe's Pub shows + pics + taking Broadway on TOUR

Kiki & Herb @ Joes Pub

The NY Times said Kiki & Herb: Alive on Broadway was one of the ten best Broadway shows in 2006.

The show that gave Broadway a revitalizing shot of downtown street cred. Combining blatant vulgarity with a refined appreciation of smoky lounge-act song stylings, Justin Bond (as the breakdown-prone chanteuse Kiki) and Kenny Mellman (as her infinitely patient accompanist) managed to celebrate and subvert showbiz stamina and sentimentality in one whiskey-perfumed breath.
Even though I didn't see any Broadway shows in 2006, I'm all for the Times' decision! The photos you see in this post are from Kiki & Herb's hilariously ingenious off-Brodway holiday show at Joe's Pub on November 26th, 2006.

This month you have the chance to see them at Joe's Pub again - every Sunday night - January 14th, 21st, & 28th. Justin Bond is also hosting Weimar NY on the 19th.

Stay tuned for more information on "Kiki & Herb's Broadway Tour". More pics below...
