I saw Glasgow, Scotland, UK's Camera Obscura @ Poland's National Home (Warsaw) located in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, NYC, USA before heading into Manhattan to catch the super late Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show at Mercury Lounge last night. (January 24, 2007)
Camera Obscura are a great "indie pop and/or twee" band that sound great live, but I think Warsaw was too big and noisy for most of them. As many have said before - the sound isn't that great in Warsaw unless you're standing up close. I bet the more intimate Bowery show back in July was nicer. Still a good show - GREAT at times, but I did have a hard time paying attention when the band wasn't playing their louder 'hits'.

I got there too late to see opener, and their Merge labelmates, Essex Green.

i went last night and had a good time. Its kind of hard not to have a good time at that place. The sound was ok, but both bands put on solid sets.

both bands sounded good, but i have trouble getting into that kind of music live.

those beige curtains on the stage are so gross.

She is a special performer and made the show. The last acoustic track before the encore's is when they sounded best.

Amazing Camera Obscura show! As always. And they played "Modern Girl"!!!! Bonus!

I actually left early after realizing I wasn't into the show at all. Not enough force behind the performance, or something, it felt lackluster to me.

I was in the front up against the stage with the white Columbia hat. For never having been to a show at Warsaw before, I'll really have to think again before heading back, unless it's a band I can't miss (and last night featured two of those bands).
The sound was absolutely atrocious in there. The vocals seemed muffled and mostly inaudible all night. I also thought the crowd was terrible. Not just for the three loud chatty girls behind me, but for the people using the place more as a social spot than a concert hall. During slower songs, I was fighting to hear the bands amidst what turned into a goddamn crowded train station. After Books Written for Girls, I was surprised that Camera Obscura didn't walk off.
And while I realize that Warsaw allows photography, does that really mean that: a) everyone has to bring a camera, and b) everyone has to fire said cameras (with the flash, in the face of the person next to you) every ten seconds? Goddamnit. You people make it impossible to enjoy shows.

I'll agree the sound is bad, don't know if I'd say atrocius. The flash cameras got annoying after awhile. More annoying was the couple behind me that insisted on talking loudly throughout the whole show! I'll second Anonymous's comments about the chatters. When she said this was their last song, I turned around and asked them to shut up for the last song, since they had been chatting non-stop the whole evening. What a buncha turds. This is a common thing at most NYC shows. Why do people bother to get tickets if they're gonna chit-chat the whole freakin' night?

I talked to Kenny, guitarrist, and he said this was their best show so far in the tour, although they haven't been that long on the road this time. The sound from the balcony was good for me.

"I was in the front up against the stage... The vocals seemed muffled and mostly inaudible all night."
I found that usually, I couldn't hear the vocals well, whatever the venue, when I was all the way up front.
"that's one big-titted tranny"
I'd hit that if she wore something other than that twee blouse.

Heh, I can see the back of my head. I guess I was standing close enough, as I didn't really have any problems with the sound, although my right ear got blasted. Keep up the good work.

The Essex Green sounded 1000x better tonight at Maxwell's.

This was my second show at the Warsaw... saw Regina Spektor there last spring... The sound seemed fine to me, but i'm not overly picky, having had some truly aweful experiences listening to good bands in the past... Must say, though, that The Essex Green impressed me a lot more than Camera Obscura. If anything, I was impressed with the crowd for showing up early and not only checking out the opening act but also giving them a real generous reception. Those Polish beers are pretty rockin, too. I thought I was screwed when my Stella turned out to not be a Stella, but alas... the beer was quite tasty.

You think you had problems — I was screwed (in more ways than one) when my Stella turned out to be a fella!

I've seen Essex Green a bunch of times, and I'd say it was one of thier better shows. I would even go as far to say that they blew away Camera Obscura. Camera Obscura were good, but I think they would sound a little better in a smaller venue. Just get away from the stage a little and you can actually hear the music peoples! Let's Get Outta this Country!
