This is my short-wanna-get-to-my-netflix-I’m-wired-and-need-to-do-shit review.
Say Yeah was good. Not blow me away good but good.
(and I caps lock this for emphasis) THE CROWD WAS THE WORST CROWD EVER! God damn, could the attendees have been any crappier? Even after their good radio play songs it was golf clapper and a couple “woo hoos.” I know the head bobbing thing’s the norm with this crowd but it was almost like the entire audience was made up of A&R people. I yelled a little, and then I went and sat at the bar after Devil Said Dance because I really could not take it anymore. I saw more camera flashes than I heard yells. Great music, but the crowd killed everything about it.

Jesus badger, give the crowd a break. The show ended at like 2:45 on a weekday. For "not blow me away good," what the f did you expect?

i saw cyhsy once and it was terrible. i wish i saw them at a place so tiny though.

is that setlist accurate..??? it seems wrong to me
Posted by nora | January 25, 2007 10:13 AM
this was the best i've ever seen them play.
an absolute incredible show. the haters, well, they're just wrong.

I don't remember them playing "Underwater" or "Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth." They also played "Goodbye to the Mother and the Cove" and I'm pretty sure "Mama, Won't You Keep Those Castles..."

They didn't play the last two of the encore. I forget what they put in place of Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth and Underwater.

I must agree with 'badger' entirely. New York crowds seem either too cool for school or full of label people who aren't always there for the music. The worst of all...The absolute worst is all the damn cameras. Give it up people. Magazines don't need a shot of every single movement.

Magazines? Magazines??? Those photos are going on photoblogs my friend. The photoblogs of people who pray that BV might link them some day :)
I was at the CYHSY New Year's Show, and the crowd for that was fairly good, especially for Hammerstein Ballroom. Still, I saw them about a year back in Toronto at the Horseshoe, and an intimate space like that really worked for them. Ounceworth was so into his mike I thought he might accidentally swallow it. Not sure if he bought it breakfast afterward.
Anyway, I'm sick of the bitching about NYC crowds on BV. Less bitching, more organizing. Be that crazy guy/girl dancing up at the front. Either other people will dance along, or everyone will think you're a freak. Either way, you'll be having too much fun to care.

the set list was switched up. i was at up front and alec would periodically tell people to skip a song or mix it up. i thought they were great, but a couple of them seemed a little pissy, like they were having a hard night. musically, though, it was an awesome show!

"the set list was switched up."
Really? Wow, you must be a genius.

i was responding to nora.
uncalled for, man, what's wrong with you??
Posted by k | January 25, 2007 12:13 PM
I have to say, there's some mean people on here....
come on people, now, smile on your brother, everybody get together try and love one another right now.
New Yorkers need to cool down a bit....
Posted by Ryan | January 25, 2007 12:17 PM
i'm probably totally alone on this, but i REALLY wanted to hear "love song number 7" live.
ok that's all the bitching you will get from me, although i DID dance all thru "satan" and i just got a lot of weird looks. oh well.

Agree with Badger that the crowd sucked but the band sucked worse.
It's the band's responsibility to play well (their timing was way off a few times), and enthusiastically (the opener, Gimme Some Salt nearly put me to sleep). By the way, would it kill the guys to smile once in a while (these are POP songs afterall).
A good frontman can get a crowd going no matter what. These guys looked bored up there, what do you expect the crowd to do?

Clap you hands and say Poor mans Gordon Gano.

i don't know why people dig this band SO much.
i saw them at bowery awhile back
on a friday night
not late as hell, like this show
and they were ok.
but THE CROWD SUCKED.
they have the most annoying fans.
how does this happen?
i think this is the tyoe of bad that straight white couple can go to.
the office looking 9- 5 guy stands behind his skinny little white pony-tailed girlfriend and they both bop there heads.
yeah, so they are both tired the next day at there advertising, pr marketing jobs- but they can tell there buddies that they saw a really cool band. whatever.
who cares.
i left after about 6 songs at that bowery show
CLAP YOUR HANDS AND SAY NAW

dang, you're really cool. want to join my afinity group? we can come up with nicknames and play revolution.
Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2007 3:26 PM
OMG. Soup Monster, you are sooooo right! Your post made me change my mind 100% about loving their music. Now I hate them, thanks to your insightful thoughts! I never realized that part of loving or hating a band depended so much on who the crowd is and how they react. My Lord, you are a GENIUS.

Haha great. I love New York City! having said that, I live in Vancouver. And oddly enough the crowd here was exactly like the one described above. I loved the CYHSY album and was very excited to see them when they came through town with the National last year. They played what used to be the Town Pump, a nice smaller room in Gastown. The scene was set for it to be a great show, but it was just ok. Satan said dance was the highlight of the set, and even then it seemed like the band was only playing at half-power. I love their tunes but I would have to say that these guys are better in the studio. They just don't have enough charisma or performance chops or what have you to energize the chin-stroking indie college crowd.

The last time I saw CYHSY was in the summer, and perhaps something has changed. It was overseas, so maybe the guys were excited to be in a foreign land, but I have never seen a band look so happy to be on stage as they were. Smiling, bouncing around the stage...And the crowd was awesome. I also totally agree with anonymous up there ("I never realized that part of loving or hating a band depended so much on who the crowd is and how they react.") If you're going to hate because there are people there that may not fit into your hipster model--you're far fucking worse than they are.
Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2007 2:41 AM
just saying- when i listen to a band on CD, mp3, etc, that is one thing. Yeah, their music is pretty good.
But there shows (for m, at least) are annoying as all hell. and it's cause of the shite crowd they attract.
I don't know how it happens.
example A) go to a gogol bordello show. great f-ing fans, really get into, go to a sleater kinney show (when they were still around) people having a great time, no pretense. no "excuse me, i was standing here with my boyfriend" bullshit.
not hating the band. hating the crowd.
Posted by soup monster | January 26, 2007 5:45 PM
i bless you all. fucking, relax.
Posted by god. | January 27, 2007 12:57 AM
Can't we all just agree that CYHSY suck live?
They are a great studio band and nothing more.
Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2007 3:31 PM
god did this show blow.
overrated horrid songs performed by balding whiny indie rock douches. at least Martin Mull was on keys.
