Matt & Kim @ Studio B, Brooklyn, NY | pics

Brooklyn's Matt & Kim played Brooklyn's Studio B last Saturday night (January 6, 2007). It was great seeing the band revel in their own success as they tore through their about-30-minute high-energy set and constantly thanked the 800-something high-energy crowd for being there. The show was fun - their music is fun, and I even think stage diving is generally fun, BUT it's understandable that a venue - especially an all-ages legitimate venue full of kids - would be concerned that someone might get hurt....

...It's understandable that the venue might send a bouncer on the stage to stop anyone trying to jump back into the crowd on top of people's heads - to protect people, and the venue (from a lawsuit)....And you might say that the large bouncer they DID put on the stage next to Matt & Kim was "just doing his job", or if you were Matt, I guess you would say something like, "Please get off the stage. This show is MATT (points at self) and KIM (points at Kim) - not Matt, Kim, and YOU (points at bouncer). These people are all our friends!". (I don't rememeber the exact quote, but it was something like that)

I don't think I was the only one that thought the smiley duo needed to get over themselves a bit at that moment. Or maybe Matt just felt he was the one doing the protecting at that moment - protecting US from the big scary (no-fun) bouncer. The security staff at Studio B are a serious, and sometimes unfriendly, bunch. (and oh yeah - Matt mentioned that the security staff gave him a hard time outside the venue earlier in the night - maybe his anger was building up. Either way - it was weird).

Anyway, still a good & sweaty show.

Studio B (and the Delancey) is run by scumbags, why do bands play at this place?

Taking the man's side, eh BV? I think you're getting old.

that whole show was weird. did anyone see the second opener? he was SO awful and every 17-year old in the room was losing their shit over it. i hated this crowd.

I agree the clowns they use are unnecessarily rude. We're indie kids not hardcore rappers representin'
and seriously why do bands bother playing at studio B?

what' snext hiring the hells angels for security, cuz that'd be so retro.

studio b's security fucking blows

Yea, why the hell would Matt have a problem with 270 lbs of obvious indifference breathing down his neck?
The guy's checking his cell phone. What an asshole.

nice pics, i liked the show too. i think the way that security generally treated the crowd that evening (which was definitely a little heavy handed outside) was a bigger issue than the bouncer they had onstage; everyone managed to get around him without too many problems, and i don't think they actually kicked anyone out for crowd surfing (even though a few folks got nabbed). if you're at a matt and kim show, it's going to be difficult if not impossible to keep the kids from dancing...

Matt is an arrogant prick.

what does matt have to be arrogant about? his crappy music?

the security there was pretty overbearing--every time i tried to come back inside i had something new confiscated from me (2 sharpies, a nail file, some drawing pencils etc.) apparently the 5'2 & under crowd is a tagging/violence threat at studio b. not that it was a big deal--just didn't make sense. i'd be super uncomfortable having some goon checking his cellphone standing onstage the entire set, too. why wasn't he on the stage during the Aa set? i don't get it.

"i'd be super uncomfortable having some goon checking his cellphone standing onstage the entire set, too."
agreed.
Maybe if Matt had addressed the venue instead of the guy on stage I would have felt better about it. It just felt wrong to hear Matt taking his anger out on that particular security dude - especially in that humiliating way.
And I'm not siding with "the man". I just think that this particular man wasn't causing much harm. He was actually kind of funny to watch - it was like people were playing "see if you can get by the bouncer"....

At worst he escorted people off the side of the stage. Suckpants wrote: "And as a bonus there was the poor bouncer who stood on stage trying to grab stage divers during Matt & Kim's set, he ended up getting taunted by both the crowd and the band (but he took it really well, especially for a bouncer)."

"poor bouncer", "taunted", and "took it well" = a nice way to say it.
The door guys...they're another story.

Berating a dude for simply doing his job is an asshole move, especially if he wasn't harassing anyone. That's like bitching to an employee of Wal-Mart about the company's management practices. You're not really sticking it to the man, you're just being a dick. He was probably checking his cell phone because he was bored with the music. The dude's on the clock, he isn't there because he was dying to hear Matt and Kim and then go bike riding with their friends after the show. Boring white kids with a sense of entitlement are hard to sympathize with.

it's always the ones that can't swim complaining about the lifeguards
oh, and Danzig

"Boring white kids with a sense of entitlement are hard to sympathize with."
hit the nail on the head.

studio b and the delancey aren't run by the same people.
they only share a silent partner.
the girl from motherfucker runs studio b.

the girl from Motherfucker books the place. the drug-dealing polish scumbags run the place and make all of the money. They give her a pittance to book "indie" events so they can make a killing off the kids who come to the show.

when I saw the first photo, before I read the lame story, I thought they just had a big black bodyguard stand onstage with them during their set, just to look cool and intimidating. Like the big black bodyguard The White Stripes had with them on Conan O'Brien's show when they did that week-long engagement a few years ago. That would have been much cooler then what actually happened.
I went to college with Matt & Kim, they're nice enough people. I guess it's somewhat of a dick move talking shit to a guy who's trying to keep dirty bike punks from breaking themselves. But then again, I wasn't there, so what do I care?
btw- for the first couple years I knew Matt, everyone knew him as Wes. Never knew why he dropped it and started going by Matt all of a sudden.

I CAN'T WAIT to see how Studio B security deals with the kids at the upcoming Municipal Waste show! It's going to be brutal.

Matt shook the bouncers hand afterwards and said "thanks for putting up with my shit!"
The show was crazy and thanks to everyone who came out.
We really appreciate it.
Big hugs,
kim

Matt & Kim will take over the world. That's why everyone is always shit-talking them. Cause you're all scared.
