Peter Bjorn and John @ Mercury Lounge, NYC | pics
For a great review of Sunday's Union Hall show, and to understand a little more about how Peter Bjorn and John rock (and don't just whistle), check out Sound Bites (MP3s included).

Monday night (January 29, 2007) - I sold my ticket to Paul Weller for $200 (just kidding), and headed over to see Peter Bjorn and John play their "first show on the Lower East Side" at Mercury Lounge in NYC.
I couldn't resist going two nights in a row, even though I didn't really feel like it. I didn't want to ruin Sunday night's memory and didn't really feel like commuting in the cold, but I made it, and as soon as PB&J played their first note - all pain (mental and physical) went away. And it didn't return until at least the time I stepped on to the cold subway platform some time around 12:30 am to return home post-show. That's how you know you saw a good show - it takes the pain away. And once again PB&J proved they were both funny, and know how to play a show better than 99% of the bands I go to see (no offense other bands - I still love you).
And this time we got Victoria Bergsman:

And for one song (Young Folks), the place went wild - wilder than we were going already - which is saying a lot (especially for Mercury Lounge in NYC). The quote of the year came when Peter said (something like) "They told me NYC crowds were too cool to sing along. They were wrong." (actual quote may vary).
It was actually the second time the five of them (Peter, Bjorn, John, Victoria, and Lars the best bongo player in Sweden) played "Young Folks" together that day - the first was on Conan O'Brien that afternoon. (Did you see it?). They told us it was why they missed sound check.
Anyway, GREAT show again. nuff said. Bowery Ballroom tonight (then Cake Shop) - then off to LA. More pics below...

got turned away for not having my ID but sold my ticket to some girl outside, who had been waiting for awhile, for $15. i saw at least 3 transactions outside the venue of people paying well over $40 for tickets. hopefully karma will come around and land me a cheap ticket to arcade fire.
very excited for tonight. i have a feeling a performance will take place at cakeshop too.

Great pics & review once again BV. I'll be @ Bowery tonight but I'll leave the singing up to PB&J. Considering how much people are spending for these shows, nobody wants to hear me sing.

Excellent show.
For me, a band that extends the songs when performing them live and adds a special touch to alter them from the CD (but still reminds you why you love the songs on the CD) is really what made these guys exceptional last night. So many bands in their live shows try to give you what you hear off the CD note for note and to me that spells boring. These guys kept everything fresh last night and just played a very tight show.
Be excited if you are going tonight....they live up to the hype!

I bootlegged the show, if interested in the MP3's - prolly available by Sundayish - e-mail me at drtchocky a t gmail d o t com

Amazing show. Those guys are great. My friend and I were remarking how much John looks like Rob Cordry from The Daily Show.
Did anyone catch an obliterated Drew Barrymore and her early-20s companion? She literally looked like she was going to fall over and he had his hands all over her.... Funny stuff.
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 10:01 AM
Not only did I catch them. I was right next to them making out most of the show and behind some guy using his professional flash right in front of my eyes as well.
Still a great show and Victoria Bergsman had a great presence on stage.
Posted by D | January 30, 2007 10:13 AM
The professional flash situation was really annoying. That dickhead Rolling Stone photographer who muscled his way to the front just before PB&J went on, was really rude to his peers, and was in everyone's space/face can kiss my ass. I have never lost it like that at a show before, but he really had it coming.
Still I agree with the above poster; the greatness of the performance outweighed the negative aspects of the environment, but it was a close contest at points...

Great photos! I was so bummed that I left my camera at home since I ended up being right in front - but those photos really captured the evening. Such a fun show and a lively and friendly crowd (minus the old lady who kept trying to start a fight with me). I ended up chatting with the band on the way out and they couldn't have been nicer.
I wish I was going again tonight because I have a feeling that next time they come to town they won't be playing Mercury or Bowery but some place much bigger. And thanks, BV for introducing me to such a wonderful band!

the short, fat, bald guy with the speedlight that he didn't know how to use? yeah that was annoying. he took 349 photos and they were all underexposed. good work dude. my optic nerve thanks you.
but seriously, an amazing show.

to comment #1 - bahahahahahahaha! as if ;)
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 10:50 AM
I for one am not bummed that you left your camera home.

was i the only one who thought victoria was practically asleep onstage? for such an upbeat dancey song i would've expected a bit more energy. (she looked like a zombie on conan too) apart from that though, the show just rocked, and i was particularly impressed with their instrumental solos when they just let loose.
Posted by marty | January 30, 2007 11:01 AM
Victoria is a Witch with a capital B. I went over to her after the show and asked her *politely* for a picture. She looks at me... says "Hmmmm uhhh... no... no."
wtf - you're on my not nice list lady!
Posted by jason | January 30, 2007 11:07 AM
Victoria did seem a little sleepy/uninterested... but that's how she was in the two times I saw the Concretes too. I think that's just her way.
The Drew thing was entirely distracting, though no more than any other drunk couple who decides to make out through a whole show. It was sorta cute, however, when they slowdanced to "Up Against the Wall."
Another really good show... I liked White Rabbits a lot too. Not sure how I felt about Born Ruffians.
Posted by bill p | January 30, 2007 11:10 AM
sure, i love to see photos of a show
maybe like 3, but when i am at a show, it's not so much fun to have a**holes muscling up to the front to snap photos all night
it's not a f*cking private photo session for you and the band, beaches.
it really drags and takes away from the whole thing
Posted by soup monster | January 30, 2007 11:10 AM
No sign of the (other) Drew near us - but we did have the less-glamorous rock scribe Jon Parales (NY Times) taking notes in front of us.
I was a few people away from the Rabid Photographer, and I couldn't help but notice his non-stop flash. If taking 600 photos is what's required to get the "perfect shot", maybe this guy should find another line of work.
Posted by drewo | January 30, 2007 11:28 AM
The show was fantastic, but I was bummed about the whistling backing track!
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 11:31 AM
nice picks, i had an excellent time at the show as well. they were so much better than i expected them to be, i'll likely be listening to writer's block a few times today. white rabbits and born ruffians were pretty good too, but PB&J hit it out of the park.

who gives a flying f%ck if drew barrymore
is at a club giving her boy a hand job?
please

Hey Penny Penis, its called an anecdotal reference. IF you dont like it, dont respond. Obviously, some people found it interesting, otherwise it would only be a one off reference.

more hipster garbage. let's try to keep this site about music, shows, etc. no?
not your star sighting- LA- style garbage.
but that is just my opinion.
no offense to those who get off by standing next to a celeb at a show. peace

What time did PB&J come on last night?
Anyone have any idea of start times for tonight?
Posted by ami | January 30, 2007 1:13 PM
They went on at 11:05, a full hour past the stated set time on the website. Bowery does a great job of posting set times, you can see it before you pass the ticket checker, unlike Merc where you have to be inside to see the set-times posting and it is way less accurate anyway.
Someone suggested to me last night that in the future I can call the venue to ask who is on stage, if they pick up the phone they generally tell you; this way one can plan to leave the house at an appropriate time. I will start trying this, you can try it tonight (let us know if you were successful?)
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 1:23 PM
Wow, I went to this show all fucked in my brians from hustling to find a room and job. Fortunately I left feeling really positive about everything. Thanks PB&J, I can do it!
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 1:48 PM
Hey Monty,
Were you the one who pushed the old lady. Not good karma! You'll be old one day to. Didn'y yo mama teach ya right girl! Never ever put your hands on anyone...they might think you are looking for a fight. My mama always said "If you are looking for a fight, you'll find one.
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 1:57 PM
Merc usually has a chalkboard on the sidewalk out front with the set times (as was the case last night). Generally, it's half hour after the set times listed on their website. So PB&J was marked on the chalkboard for a 10:30 start. And as noted by a poster above, they actually went on a bit past 11pm. So... a bit of time for a drink and to check out the T-shirt stand. BTW- the guy working the T-shirt stand says PB&J will be back in the States in April/May.

ok, so if i'm trying to confirm that I can use someone else's tickets tonight if I have a photocopy of their ID and credit card. True or false?
Posted by gage | January 30, 2007 2:31 PM
Typically, false (at Bowery).

call Mercury or Bowery and ask.

both white rabbits and born ruffians were really enjoyable last night... i would definitely recommend showing up earlier to catch some of their sets

Anyone driving back to Jersey (New Brunswick area) after tonights show? Got any room in your car?
Posted by ami | January 30, 2007 4:29 PM
i'll drive you if you have an extra ticket
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 4:35 PM
For the record, I do not push old ladies...
Posted by Monty | January 30, 2007 5:02 PM
Anonymous - My buddy has an extra ticket - but he's buying it from someone for above face value. If you can drive both of us to jersey I'm sure he'd sell it for less than he's paying (probably around face).
call me if your serious

Am I only the one who thought the show sucked?
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 6:13 PM
For the record Monty, we all witnessed some chicks screwing with this older lady. It was a little pathectic really. It looked like she stood in front of you? your friend? and then the push. If she gave you some s**t dude, wtf did you expect...
Don't be a meany again BAD KARMA
Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2007 7:18 PM
brooklynvegan, i remember someone taking pictures next to me and from the angle of your shots, it looks like i was standing right next to you during the show. i was going to ask you if you were putting the pics online but then got too into the show and forgot, but looks like i can see them anyway lol.
i thought every act was great. i've been listening to pb&j stuff for a while and recently got into the born ruffians, but i was really impresed by the bands in person. they seem like they were really in their element live.
in terms of the crowd, most people seemed to be really enjoying it, but a few seemed a bit too cool for their own good. i guess thats typical of a band popular with the hipster crowd.
overall, id say totally worth the money and id definatley want to see the bands again.

Question for Monty or her friend,
When was the last time you were at a GA show? Part of the deal is dealing with dumb f**ks who stand in your precious line of view is part of the deal. If you girls are new to town, you had better wise up! This time you pushed some older lady...might have been Peter's Mom for all you knew. Next time you might push a blipster, or a jipster, or just someone who will knock your a** out. Keep your hipster hands to yourself and check your entitlement attitude at the door.
Posted by chadsworth | January 31, 2007 11:51 AM
what is up with the whole "hipsters are too cool for their own good" attitude. you all are just closeted-wannabes who can't and will never be accepted by us, especially if you're not orginally from the city. go eat some more ho-hos you fat bastards.

I'm not sure how many people here actually watch sports, or god forbid read about sports on the internet, but this post was linked from sports illustrated...weird

"fucking hipsters..."
sorry, that just seemed appropriate

in terms of "too cool for their own good", when people are too concerned about looking cool at a show to really enjoy themselves, then i would say, yeah, they're too cool for their own good.
i think "hipster" has become somewhat of a derogatory term. there can be other people who dress the same, listen to the same music, etc, its the "holier than thou" attitude that defines a hipster. and btw, many of the hipsters aren't orignially from the city, so anonymous, chew on that.
