The Gossip @ The Faversham | Nov 2, 2006 (CRED)

"In October, Jean-Paul Gaultier sent a 20-stone woman down the runway clad in lingerie, to show that beauty is universal. How we giggled. But a few months later, unrepentantly fat pop singer Beth Ditto was named the coolest woman alive. Is there a connection? The catwalk is a mirror reflecting the zeitgeist, but also the place where it all kicks off." [Scotsman]

What a "pretty" crowd. What an insincere, it's-all-about-the-clothes-you're-wearing scene. Ugh. And the exodus of privileged kids from the Midwest to Brooklyn continues...

god i love that woman.

What does "unrepentantly fat" mean? It seems to absolve the obese of responsibility for their condition because it is not their "fault" thus they could care less about their body image. Granted, being secure about your body is mentally healthy, but being obese is far from cool. Seriously, being obese is not some type of choice, like whether I will wear plaid or what color jacket I'll don at the hipster show tonight. Instead, it's unhealthy and unattractive. Sorry about the PSA, but everyone is thinking it... I'd like to see the BMI of the media hypers pushing this obesity-is-cool story.

3rd poster-
how do you know beth ditto is not healthy? you're not the last word on what is "unattractive". i think she's beautiful.
Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2007 10:22 AM
Medically speaking, she is unhealthy by definition. It is indisputable that she is obese. Obesity is unhealthy by definition. Her unhealthy lifestyle may not manifest itself in outwardly noticeable health problems yet, but she is, without a doubt, unhealthy. However, attractiveness is purely subjective. So, 4th poster, you are correct. She is unattractive to me, but may be attractive to you. Good point. However, evolutionarily, most people are attracted to healthier looking people - the obese and malnourished tend to be on the outside of this curve. To add some context to my comments, I deal with people who go to painstaking efforts to defer personal responsibility for their actions by attributing such actions to "nature" or other people. I find this frustrating and socially unhealthy. We don't need to condemn the obese as pyriahs, but let us not encourage such behavior. If you want to be obese, so be it. However, your health insurance premiums should be higher and your state/federal retirement benefits should be curtailed accordingly. Same goes for smokers. Nevertheless, I appreciate your comments Ms.4th-poster. Thanks!

Why doesn't anyone ever rag on the privileged hipster kids from Darien, or Westchester County, or Palo Alto? Equal ops, y'all.
Topic: Note to self not to be a slacker about securing tickets to the Knitting Factory show.

there should be praises for beth ditto on here instead of a treatise on obesity and public health.
please see beth at a show, poster of comments 3 and 5. it will take your mind off public policy.

poster 3/5 -
"However, evolutionarily, most people are attracted to healthier looking people - the obese and malnourished tend to be on the outside of this curve."
how then can you explain our penchant for bony ass women in this country?
but basically poster 7 is right and we should stop hashing this out on here...
beth ditto is the only performer i have every seen give 110% every single time, she is so talented and amazing and beautiful and magnetic. seriously.

Those chicks in the video sure know how to party.

What's the significance of February 18, 1933? According to Wikipedia, that's the day Yoko Ono was born.

In related news, here is a leaked new Britney Spears track, supposedly:

"Too bad that picture was taken in the UK"

I've never seen her play live. I bet she does rock. However, the article raised the issue of her weight and I commented accordingly. It was neither random nor inappropriate. Aside from the well-founded impetus behind my comments, I firmly believe that there is never a wrong place for public discourse.
Sincerely,
poster 3/5
p.s., I pray that my comments didn't hurt Beth's feelings, however there is a price to pay for thrusting one's self into the public domain. No less, I'm assuming that she cares not as she is unrepentant in her self-view.

I was just trying to spark public debate. No harm intended.

That place looks like Brooklyn and Manhattan and Austin and San Diego and Chicago and Philly and San Francisco and Omaha and Olympia and Portland and Phoenix and Alberta and Manchester. You want to know why? IT'S AN INDIE ROCK SHOW. Christ, indie rock kids are universal in their dress, it has nothing to do with locale. Anyway, hip, fashionable people have been migrating to NYC forever, this is absolutely nothing new. It's just that the borough people are moving to is different. It's time to stop caring about this.

wow. looks like a way better crowd than when i saw goxxip at koko club in camden. bunch of homophobic footballin' louts, except for the first few rows! yeah, privileged white kids can be annoying, but damn, i'd take that community over a genuine, hardened chav crowd. i was washing the ashes and booze out of my hair for days.

February 18 is also surrealist André Breton's birthday, which trumps Ono's birthday by a factor of one trillion brazilian.
"Unrepentantly fat" means that perhaps she tried to lose weight, said "Fuck it", and was thereafter enabled by people desperately in love with the sensuality of flopsweat.

So true. One thing though...Philly? C'mon Philly has not one iyota of hipster or "indie" to it.

But he was born on February 18, 1896, not on February 18, 1933. The bass in the video has the latter date written on it. Get your head out of your ass before posting a comment.

have you EVER been to philly, bro?

"Obesity is unhealthy by definition." says "Anonymous."
I strongly question the generality of this statement. Had you TRULY done your research I think you could have revised your statement to state that what IS unhealthy is a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle, which may or may not lead to weight gain. However "Fat" in and of itself is not necessarily a life-threatening condition, despite what our society would have us believe. One of the greatest books on this subject was actually written by a "thin" male lawyer, Paul Campos with no personal agenda, I highly suggest you read some of the many books and articles he has written on the subject.
Would it matter to you if I told you I weigh 250 pounds but have a cholesterol level of 145 and blood pressure of 110/80, and I work out at the gym at least twice a week with a real aerobic, sweat-inducing workout? Because I do. These figures aren't considered "unhealthy" by many that I know of.
I'm guessing you have never been "obese" but I could be wrong. If not, how could you truly know what it is like to BE fat and try to lose weight? And if you have been fat and lost it, I'm surprised it wasn't without great difficulty and struggle. Rather, it sounds as if you're forming your opinions based on a select group of obese people you have come into contact with. Personally I do not like to throw a set archetype on any one stratum of the population, be they black, gay, poor or fat. It's so easy to judge something on FACE value - thus our world's history of racism and discrimination.
Anyone who has ever seen Beth Ditto perform live will testify to the fact that her entire performance is an insane aerobic workout for ANYONE, that woman has stamina like I've never seen. And she does it night after night. I've never seen a skinny woman like Karen O even come close to matching this strenuous workout onstage.
Ironically, Beth was at her skinniest when she was very, very sick from a gallbladder disorder. MUCH more unhealthy than she is now. So, on the flip side, her skinny self was much more unhealthy.
We can't let anyone just be happy in this society, can we? Wow.

Superdouche, I never said anything about him being born on 1933. I'm glad you're so hot to be polite to other anonymous posters, but get your tongue off my nuts for just two minutes so I can have a moment!
