Wes' Weekly Hip Hop News Roundup | (Jan 24, 2007)

Joell Ortiz

The most anticipated MC of 2007? Joell Ortiz. Lets just hope Aftermath won't change him. Watch arguably the greatest EPK of all time. The hunger, the flow, the conviction. Incredible.

That video is what's right with Hip Hop. Now watch a prime example of what's wrong.

RIP
Disco D reportedly committed suicide Monday night (January 22).. His discography includes albums by 50 Cent, AZ and Nina Sky.

Those who knew Dave know he was a once in a lifetime person with an electric and captivating personality. He was a friend without equal, who was selfless with himself and his counsel, consistently living up to his mantra, "the only thing you cant make more of is time." He was a relentlessly creative, passionate and ambitious artist whose passion for music illuminated everything he touched.

Under the alias Disco D, Dave was responsible for production on 2 grammy nominated albums and releases totaling 17 million in sales worldwide. [Disco D Message Boards]

Independent rapper Timz, an American born rapper of Chaldean and Iraqi descent, and a nominee for Best Hip-Hop Album at the 2006 San Diego Annual Music Awards, sent us a link to his controversial new video.

Middle Eastern tinged beats with incendiary rhymes in an effort to shatter those ugly stereotypes that have plagued people who look like him since 9/11 and the start of the Iraq war.

The post mentions the Roots, so it's whitey-approved.

damage to his career yea

don't get me wrong, he's one of the best that ever did it, and his latest album was very accomplished (finally again), but he could do so much better and every hip hop head knows it. he's notorious for subpar beat choices

You're so right, what hip hop needs is a broke rapper talking about himself (Joel Ortiz) vs. a paid rapper talking about himself (Freeky Zeeky).

I mean who wants to see Black folks get money right?

>What hip hop needs is a broke rapper talking >about >himself (Joel Ortiz) vs. a paid rapper >talking >about himself (Freeky Zeeky).

1. Joell Ortiz signed to Aftermath Records. I'm going to assume he got a pretty decent signing bonus seeing that there was somewhat of a bidding war.

2. Freeky Zeeky isn't 'rich'. He has money. There is a difference. Just because he has a big car that he bought from his advance (which is a loan, not real money), doesn't mean he is rich.

3. That being said it's not about money to begin with. It's about being a quality artist, a good rapper, a role model for the genre, a respectable member of your musical heritage, and something that will last. Freeky Zeeky is none of these things.

That TIMZ video for Iraq on YouTube is unbelievable. It really sent chills up my spine. Thanks for speaking my mind for me.

wow, keep going. it's been real reading this. really real.

You said rich I didn't.

I don't get how people confuse acting like an artist with actual artistry? Or better yet looking like one vs. being one.

Because you don't mention throwing away your advance doesn't somehow make you better, necessary, or even relevant.

It's not about the money and in this case it must not be about the music either. If you were so concerned about what the Freaky Zeaky's of the game are doing it's probably better to compare and contrast actual music and not F. Zeaky's rant on accruing debt vs. Joel Ortiz's press release + his "great" freestyle.

Maybe Joel Ortizs' album will actually come out. Maybe it will be great. But why do you and so many other bloggers + journalists feel as if you have to frame the issue as:

the guy whos stands for something vs. the guy who stands for nothing.

It doesn't matter where you stand if you don't make good music. I have yet to hear anything that's moved me from Joel Ortiz. And I haven't met nor heard of anyone else who felt so strongly about Joel's music that they would compare it to an orange.

So again why do you have a problem with Freaky Zeaky's spending habbits and how does that really relate to Joel Ortiz's freestyle and press release? I think the comparison says more about you then them.

Posted by R | January 25, 2007 2:12 AM

I think I made it clear it was about skill and rap, not about spending habbits when I said:

***

***

I don't have a problem with Freeky's spending habits so much as I do with his total lack of artistry or any of the above.
