Beirut doing OK & (hopefully) playing 2 nights @ Bowery
DOWNLOAD: Beirut - Postcards From Italy (you probably have this MP3)
Beirut @ McCarren Pool, Brooklyn (MORE)

Lets try this again. The following dates go on sale today @ Noon:
Beirut, 2007
May 6 @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC
May 7 @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC
And as previously announced, those going to Austin for SXSW will have the chance to see Beirut much sooner even - first at the Beggars showcase (Mar 14), and 2nd at a daytime Austin City Limits KEXP taping (Mar 16).
I'm also happy to report that Zach is currently doing well in his original home of New Mexico. In fact:
He's completely rested and working furiously on the next album. The band - minus trumpeter Kelly Pratt who is performing this year with Arcade Fire and is being replaced by his wife. Tracy Pratt - will be headed over to Albuquerque after SXSW to record their parts. Zach is borrowing the A Hawk and a Hacksaw studio/practice space while Jeremy and Heather spend the next six to nine months in Budapest, preparing for a big May UK tour with the Hun Hangar Ensemble. The whole new Beirut album is already in Zach's head, and about 50% recorded. It's very French.Speaking of French, Ear Farm presents "An evening of rock from Paris to (Zach's second home) Brooklyn" at Union Hall on March 3rd.

"Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier aka German producers and live act Booka Shade rounded off 2006 in style. The Berliners were named by the writers at Resident Advisor, the UK’s leading electronic music website, as the best live act and won the best album award for their second long-player, ‘Movements’. The album also featured in many other international end of year top 10 charts." [their official bio]
"Booka Shade, along with M.A.N.D.Y., and the rest of the Get Physical label were THE sound of 2005. Penning minimally melodic stormers that rocked every genre of dancefloor, Booka Shade arguably put on the best show of WMC 2006 at the Fixed/Revolver party." [David Bruno - yesterday]

more Capitol/EMI/Caroline/Astralwerks rumors + Sparklehorse Tour Dates
STREAM: Sparklehorse - Don't Take My Sunshine Away (real)

From one anonymous, yet reputable tipster:
30 from the capitol side and 4 from the virgin side. And from another:
Word has it that one of the things they are doing (as of last week) is relaunching Caroline Records which will handle foreign rock projects, creat a company called Internationally Known which will be foreign pop stuff and Astralwerks will remain running but only focus on foreign dance/electro type stuff. Though Errol who pretty much created astralwerks will no longer be there. So in other words part of this new label is three ex-US music labels that will focus on three genres and be the label for EMI acts outside of the US to be released here.Sparklehorse plays Webster Hall on February 28th. All tour dates below...Sparklehorse was also dropped from Astralwerks. The only US band i heard that's remaining on there is vhs or beta but that may have changed in the last week.
Sparklehorse - 2007 Tour Dates
Feb 22 - Saint Andrews Hall - Detroit, Michigan
Feb 23 - Mod Club Theatre - Toronto, Ontario
Feb 24 - Club Soda - Montréal, Quebec
Feb 26 - The Paradise Lounge - Boston, Massachusetts

Feb 28 - Webster Hall - New York, New York

The dance world typically gathers steam in the US in March, with Winter Music Conference held in Miami, and the increasingly dance-populated SXSW, many labels and producers tour their beat-laden wares come spring. This Spring is no different and NYC will host almost all the top upcoming talent in the month of March.
WMC happens in Miami March 20th through March 25th. The list of events is here. I'll post highlights in a few weeks.
Two zeitgeist-y days in March see the dance world collide in NYC. There is a line in the sand...
Booka Shade

Thursday March 15th
* Cut NYC returns at Studio B with Booka Shade Live
* Institubes vs. Boys Noize at Hiro with Para One, Boys Noize, & Curses!
Booka Shade, along with M.A.N.D.Y., and the rest of the Get Physical label were THE sound of 2005. Penning minimally melodic stormers that rocked every genre of dancefloor, Booka Shade arguably put on the best show of WMC 2006 at the Fixed/Revolver party.
Institubes is the reserved cousin to Paris' Ed Banger Records. Their roster includes Tacteel, Para One, Das Glow, Surkin, Bobmo, & (NYC'er) Curses!, all who blur the lines between hip-hop, techno, and rave. They will all be on the tip of your tounge in 2007. Boys Noize and the output of his self-titled label have been crafting a hard edged, drum centric version of the current electro sound of dance, evidenced by THAT remix of "Banquet" that you hear every weekend. Besides Bloc Party, BN has remixed much of the indierati: Kaiser Chiefs, Tiga, Shiny Toy Guns, Living Things, and (!) Depeche Mode.
And another complicated night that needs no explanation for readers of this fine site:
Saturday March 31st
* LCD Soundsystem at Bowery Ballroom
* Datarock, Lo-Fi-Fnk, & the Presets at Fixed at Studio B
* John Digweed & MSTRKRFT tour hits Pacha
Less of a decision TONIGHT (Feb 22)....

Speaking of nudity and pools....

This from cnet:
"Alida Saxon knew something was wrong last weekend when she saw that a thumbnail image on her blog that gets automatically fed from her Flickr page wasn't one of her own photos.Above photo via Flickr. She clicked on the link for the image--a shot of a swimming pool--and was taken to her Flickr page, where she noticed that the pool image had mysteriously replaced one of her own shots.
"I thought my (Flickr) account had been hacked and some joker was swapping out images," the Springfield, Mass.-based artist wrote in an e-mail to CNET News.com. She went straight to the Flickr Help Forum and discovered that many other users were encountering the same problem of random photos replacing their photos on Flickr pages. Some of those new images, however, weren't as innocent as a swimming pool scene.

2007 McCarren Pool free concert schedule, PoolAid & nudity
Deerhoof @ McCarren Pool - Aug 13, 2006 (MORE)
JellyNYC, the company behind the free summer concerts at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn, have this to say
We will be producing nine consecutive FREE Sunday concerts at The McCarren Park Pool bordering Williamsburg and Greenpoint Brooklyn. Get ready to slip 'n' slide, get stung in the dodgeball pit, get fat on burgers and beer, and listen to some of our favorite bands in the the summer sun.Depending on who ends up playing, PoolAid may or may not be happy - they like free events, but they "want to see everyone in the neighborhood attending events at the pool, not just hipsters".JELLYNYC's 2007 POoL PARTIES will announce the exact dates soon.
JELLYNYC will also be co-producing three other dates at the McCarren Park Pool, including a benefit for the Open Space Alliance (OSA) on June 10 (ticket cost will be no higher than $15), a FREE show on June 21st celebrating the first annual Make Music New York Festival, as well as a FREE event with our dear friends The Brooklyn Brewery in mid September--Brooklyn's own Roctoberfest. For those of you who don't know, in Germany Octoberfest starts in September.
Of Montreal was one of the big bands that brought "hipsters" to the neighborhood last summer. Insert your skinny dipping joke here. Of course that would require water.

Jade Tree's FUCKED UP releasing album on What's Your Rupture - TOUR DATES (NYC, SXSW, etc)
DOWNLOAD: F*cked Up - Baiting the Public (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Nardwuar interviews F*cked Up (MP3)
What am I supposed to do when a band name is as scandalous as F*cked Up? I don't want this website to get blocked or however that works. I don't want to censor anything either. Usually I'll just throw an asterisk in the word. Does it do anything? I have no idea. Anyway, I left it uncesored in the title - asterisks everywhere else. Hopefully that doesn't f*ck sh*t up too much.
---
"F*cked Up remains one of the most talked-about bands in hardcore and punk rock in both the mainstream media and underground outlets. Their brand of relentless, aggressive, yet highly melodic music has been mentioned on nearly every magazine’s top ten list of the year, regardless of the magazine’s musical preference. Punk rockers, hardcore kids and indie rockers alike all seek to obtain the band’s highly sought after releases, which are almost all on vinyl and in limited numbers." [JADE TREE]
F'd Up in London (CRED - MORE)

I found the "indie rockers alike" part funny at first, but it's so true. So many people have asked me about this Toronto band in the past month - mainly because of their upcoming shows at Mercury Lounge and SXSW - and I'm not talking about the people I would go see Sick of It All, Agnostic Front, or Scatterbrain & Ludachrist with - I mean people who you might even catch at an Andrew Bird show. It's probably because F'd Up aren't " the prototypical hardcore band. The songs on 'Hidden World' average five + minutes and have violins, acoustic guitars, samples, piano and other instrumentation." It's also probably because VICE likes them, and has released some of their stuff (some of tons of stuff).
'Hidden World' is their debut full length - out now on Jade Tree. According to their blog, they're next releasing "Year of the Pig" on What's Your Rupture - home of Love is All and caUSE co-MOTION! (more indie cred). caUSE co-MOTION! is also who they're playing with at Mercury Lounge on March 3rd. At SXSW they're playing a ton of parties including the one I'm throwing with AAM.
I've never seen them live, but after seeing the pics and video, I'm pretty psyched to. All dates below....
F*cked Up - 2007 Tour Dates
Feb 28 - Toronto, ON
Mar 2 - Philadelphia, PA @ First Unitarian Church

David Vandervelde - album stream & 2007 Tour Dates
DOWNLOAD David Vandervelde - Jacket (MP3)
"Vandervelde clearly has absorbed his Marc Bolan influences well." [Waved Rumor]

David Vandervelde is a musician from Chicago. His new album "The Moonstation House Band" came out on Secretly Canadian on January 23rd. You can STREAM the whole thing. And you can see him, and his "Moonstation House Band" (Derek James, Robbie Hamilton, Johhny Caluya, Matt DeWine and Fergus Kaiser), live:
in NYC, 2007
Feb 26 - Union Hall w/ Via Audio (tix)
Feb 27 - Piano's w/ Sam Champion, Sono Oto and Brian Scary & The Shredding Tears
Note: The Derek James in his band is not the Brooklyn Derek James that's playing with the Undisputed Heavyweights Thursday night.
MarathonPacks was at the Moonstation House Band's very first show, and says, "they sounded amazing---there were some acoustic problems (mostly with the vocals), sure, but it's clear that the band has a clear vision of what they want to do and how they want to do it."
"At a pipsqueakish 22 years old, David Vandervelde is already generating the kind of indie-net whispering that musicians twice his age pine for." [SPIN]

Capitol Records dropping lots of bands

Kevin Devine is one of the first to confirm
I was recently dropped by Capitol Records as part of the collateral damage swirling around the Virgin/Capitol merger. I was not surprised, as you need to be acutely aware of sharks when you decide to swim that far out in the ocean, and had been expecting this strange and fun experiment to end almost from the day I signed the dotted line. People like me aren't really supposed to flourish in environments like that, but it was worth a shot, and I definitely gained and learned much more than I lost over the course of my time with the label, and would like to thank the people I worked with there for treating me well and making my transition a surprisingly smooth and rewarding one, both at the outset and ultimately at the end.Other artists rumored to be among those dropped: The Dandy Warhols, Sound Team, Shout Out Louds, The Redwalls, Otep, Fischerspooner, The Vines, and Airbourne.I hold no ill will and harbor no grudge against Capitol Records; I'm thankful I had the opportunity to make a record I love with a producer I've long respected and admired in studios I'd read about but never expected to track in. I'm thankful for the initial faith and realize the 'they' that brought me in and worked closely with me for the past year and a half were largely turned over, and so not the same 'they' that ushered me out.
Employees are going too. Possibly Jax.
Morningwood, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Decemberists, OK GO and Lily Allen are likely safe. Moby's future is uncertain.
Know more? Please send in your tips.

New Violators (from Norway) MP3 + NYC & SXSW Tour Dates
DOWNLOAD: New Violators - Burma (MP3)
From their official bio
"New Violators is a newly formed 5-piece from Trondheim, Norway, which, following an already legendary first show at Oslo’s Mono Club during Summer 2006, has quickly become THE name to drop in Norway. Armed with a sound situated somewhere between ‘Born to Run’, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ and Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’, the band has already attracted the attention of various tastemakers including Pitchforkmedia’s Brandon Stosuy, who anointed them his favourite Norwegian find at one of this summer’s festivals."

From Oh My Rockness
"Norway's New Violators are a relatively new five-piece that became the talk of last summer's massively popular Oya Festival in Oslo (beating out The Knife, Cold War Kids and even Morrissey). Hey, 45,000 fans can't be wrong. The band plays intensely melodic synth pop that sounds like a much more optimistic Joy Division or the band Stellastarr* was trying to be." [Oh My Rockness]

Jesus & Mary Chain playing 3 shows -- Jim Reid says why
DOWNLOAD: The Jesus & Mary Chain - About You (MP3)
I just received this informative press release:
The Jesus & Mary Chain return to play their first shows in nine years when they appear at Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio California on Friday April 27th and at the Summercase Festival in Madrid (Boadilla del Monte) and Barcelona (Parc del Forum) on July 13th and 14th.Coachella is sold out.Jim Reid answers some questions:
1/ why are you doing the show now?
"Well, I would say 'why not?' there are many reasons really. Firstly it's taken this long for me and William to get to a point where it would be realistic to do it, and to some degree each of us assumed the other wouldn't be interested, and it was only after we talked about it that we realised this. Also Coachella were very persistent."2/ The last show was in 1998?
"Yes, the last Mary Chain gig was in 1998 and was such a bloody awful mess, too much drink, too many drugs, nobody seeing eye to eye on anything and the band just blew up, and I suppose you could say this is another good reason for our reformation, cause that was no way for the Mary Chain to end."3/ William lives in LA and you live in Devon?
"You can imagine the problems this presents."4/ Who else is in the band?
"On bass it's Phil King, on drums it's Loz Colbert, and on second guitar is Mark Crozer, and of course myself and William."5/ Will there be more shows and an album?
"I really don't know. Maybe. I think we would like to and we're looking at another show or 2."6/ Are William and yourself working on solo albums?
"Yes, both are at the recording stage at the moment, and both will hopefully be out later in the year."

Word of Mouth Festival - May 15-19 @ World Financial Center
The American Beauty Project @ The WFC - Jan 20, 2007 (CRED) (INFO)

The "Word of Mouth" Festival is coming to the World Financial Center in NYC --> May 14-19. All I know is that it will almost definitely be free, and that CocoRosie are playing it. CocoRosie also recently played Carnegie Hall for David Byrne.
And it looks like the "Word of Mouth" festival is running at the same exact time as the Highline Festival (which David Bowie is not playing, but supposedly Deerhoof is, but who really knows...)

Jesu "Conqueror" streaming ++ Tour delay, Visa issues

Jesu's new album "Conqueror" is streaming at their website. Tonight (Feb 20) they were supposed to kick off a tour in LA, but...
We are sorry to report that Jesu are still stuck in England and will NOT be playing the Spaceland, L.A headline/release party ; work permits for Jesu have still not been cleared by U.S officials/customs and the band are not allowed into the U.S until the permits are officially cleared. The band are yet to receive a date of clearance and simply have to wait until they do so before entering the U.S, hence Jesu will not be appearing at any shows with ISIS until the permits are available and Jesu can leave England....stupid Visas. Please watch this space for further news ; once Jesu have their permits we will post confirmation of this and the first show that Jesu will play in the U.S. Hopefully the band will not miss more than the first week of this tour, being the bands first tour of the U.S.
In related Jesu live line up news, Jesu bass player Diarmuid Dalton will not be playing any of the U.S dates due to being refused a work permit for the U.S for this tour. Diarmuid has been replaced for this tour by long time collaborator (and fellow Birmingham, England native) bass player Dave Cochrane (Justin and Dave played together in Head Of David, Sweet Tooth, Ice, God and now their new project together GREY MACHINE).
Drummer Ted Parsons has also been unable to make this first Jesu U.S tour due to family commitments and has been replaced by drummer Danny Walker, a Los Angeles native who plays for many bands including Intronaut.
Thank you
Assuming Jesu make it over at some point, they play Irving Plaza with Isis on March 14th. Jesu is also playing SXSW. Tour dates here and at Jesu's site. (thx Klaus)

Lo-Fi-Fnk @ Fontana's, NYC (BV CMJ show) - Nov 3, 2006

Laptop or no laptop, Sweden's Lo Fi Fnk (Leo and August) are coming back to the States to pay us a visit. Last time they were here for CMJ. They played a few shows including one at Galapagos and my day party at Fontana's. Here's what they had to say about that:
We are back from the United States both physically and mentally. It sure was a wicked time and makes u understand why Americans think of Europe as the same country, not just the same continent. Cause this was something really different even though we only saw NYC and Philadelphia. We wanna give a big high five to Greg and Darren who made it happen and everyone who we met(like john lee). Thanx for teaching us all the trendy words and phrases which we 4 sure will use in our euro-american lyrics and which 4 sure will be totally not cool and trendy when you will get to hear the tracks. This time they'll see many more American cities including LA, Miami, and Austin (SXSW). They'll also come back to Philly & NYC to play some shows (dance parties) with Datarock. Should be good. All dates below...

Jamie T, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, NME + Tour Dates
Jamie T @ The Archway Tavern (2006) (CRED)

And the nominees for "Best Solo Artist" in this year's Shockwaves NME Awards are....
* Lily AllenBrooklyn Vegan readers are probably well acquainted with Lily, Jarvis & Thom by now. You may even remember GCWCF (Sam Duckworth). But who is Jamie T?
* Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
* Jarvis Cocker
* Jamie T.
* Thom Yorke
Like a modern-day mix of Billy Bragg and Vicky Pollard, Jamie T (or Jamie Treays, as he's known to his mum) is set to divide opinion.I'm surprised they didn't mention the Streets. Here's a video...On the plus side, his songs frequently have a vibrant narrative, rich in poetic observation. The downside, at least to some ears, is the Sarf London patois he insists on singing.
The tall, skinny teenage lad from Wimbledon is clearly influenced as much by The Clash, Tom Waits, Rancid and The Specials as the drum'n'bass and garage that surrounded him while growing up.
Armed only with an acoustic bass guitar, he began playing the backrooms of pubs in Soho and Twickenham. The songs on his just released debut album, Panic Prevention, feature tales of life in identikit suburbia and what it is to be a young man growing up in 1990s Britain.
The live experience is akin to the troubadour spirit of the American folkies of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan colliding headlong with true English gents like Paul Weller, Billy Bragg and Elvis Costello, with a few pills and cans of Stella to loosen the creative juices.
There no doubt he possesses the ability to pen a memorable hook or two. Whether his faux street-slang vocal-style though will enthral or enrage you depends on your tastes. Like Marmite, you'll either love or hate it. He's mates with Lily Allen. Make of that what you will. [Norwich Evening News]
Jamie & Sam (GCWCF) are both visiting very soon....

Tim Fite 'Over the Counter Culture' FREE ALBUM DOWNLOAD
DOWNLOAD: Over The Counter Culture (whole album ZIP)

Tim Fite continues to rule - now so more than ever because he's decided to give away his awesome second album 'Over the Counter Culture' FOR 100% FREE...
Fite will release his new album Over The Counter Culture for free through his website on February 20th, 2007 (and on Brooklyn Vegan on February 19th). Fite’s fifteen track recording is a scathing examination of commercial culture and it's adverse effects on life in general, and on rap music specifically.no tour dates at the moment.“I saw hip/hop being co-opted by commercialism and tricked out in an effort to disguise the hidden agenda of economic, intellectual, and spiritual degradation that we have come to know so fondly as popular culture,” Fite says of the impetus for his new album, which temporarily puts his multi-genred folk leanings to the side for what he calls “an overtly political hip-hop record.”
“I intended to make a record that was free from the paradox of art reconciling with commerce,” Fite explains of the follow up to 2005’s acclaimed Gone Ain’t Gone.
“Conversely, I intended to make a record where art attacked commerce and its constituents, openly and without hesitation. I intended to make a record with an accusatory finger pointed at the world (myself included), shouting, "GUILTY!!!!!!!!" Guilty: for spending too much time on money, and not enough time on madness. Guilty: for believing in advertising so much that we have become advertisements ourselves.Guilty: for not holding up the red card of accountability and demanding change through self awareness. "

Jill Cunniff tour dates -- Luscious Jackson streaming
DOWNLOAD: Jill Cunniff - Lazy Girls (MP3)

One of this week's interesting releases is definitely Luscious Jackson's CD of Greatest Hits. You can LISTEN to the whole thing at AOL.
Interesting, but maybe not as great, is the other Luscious Jackson CD coming out this week - the one called "City Beach" by ex-frontwoman Jill Cunniff.
AND MOST INTERESTING is that Jill has some shows scheduled. She'll be playing solo stuff in addition to LJ songs:
Jill Cunniff | 2007 Tour Dates
Wed March 7, 7pm @ Virgin Megastore Union Square, NYC (solo acoustic)
Sun March 11 @ Mercury Lounge, NYC (first ever full band show)
Thu March 29 @ Hotel Café, Los Angeles.
She's also playing SXSW, but is so far missing from the schedule.

Largehearted Boy's Interesting CD Releases This Week
This week's music release list may lack star power, but still is incredibly deep in worthwhile discs. The US release of Japanese singer-songwriter Tujiko Noriko's Solo tops my list, along with singles by the Knife and M Ward. Other highly recommended discs include Asobi Seksu's Spaceland Presents: At the Echo October 6th, 2006, the Black Lips' Valientes Del Mundo Neuva, Elvis Perkins' Ash Wednesday, Explosions In The Sky's All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone, Jesu's Conqueror, and Southern Culture on the Skids' Countrypolitan Favorites.
What new releases are you picking up this week (or can recommend)?
For hip parents, the Rockabye Baby series has added Lullaby Renditions of Nine Inch Nails, Lullaby Renditions of No Doubt, and Lullaby Renditions of Smashing Pumpkins.

music is like a bottle of water
"Let's compare music with water. Water is readily available, essentially for free, from a number of sources. However, sales of bottled water continue to grow, up 60 percent from 2001 to about $11 billion in revenue last year." [Newsday]
