"Volta" - more details on the new Bjork album

Bjork @ Roskilde, 2003 (CRED)
Bjork

May 7th is not that far away!

We, as in madwebcarpenters of bjork.com, have waited for a fair bit of time like everyone else biting our tongue and now is the time to release this bit of information known as a press release. Things are getting very interesting as further details of the new album and more concerts to be announced. It is not going to be quiet anymore!

Volta is the name of the album and the date is May 7th. The Press release reads thus:

"Musical innovator Björk releases her next studio album ‘Volta’ on May 7th 2007.

‘Volta’ is Björk's sixth studio album and follows the release of ‘Medúlla’ in 2004.

Featuring ten brand new and original tracks ‘Volta’ is entirely written and produced by Björk.

In the role of producer Björk has brought in various other musicians to work on her songs and ‘Volta’ features some of her most interesting collaborations so far with Antony Hegarty (Antony And The Johnsons) singing on two tracks, and Timbaland (Jay-Z, Missy Elliot etc) working with Björk on beats that she created for three further songs.

Other artists that feature on ‘Volta’ include electronic pioneer Mark Bell of LFO and two unique drummers – Chris Corsano (the improvisational drummer who has worked with Sonic Youth amongst others) and Brian Chippendale from Lightening Bolt.

Björk also brought in two acclaimed African artists for ‘Volta’ - Toumani Diabate, the Malian kora player and Konono No1 the experimental band from The Congo who won a BBC World Music Award in 2006. She has also put together her own 10 piece female brass section of Icelandic musicians who play on three further tracks. Meanwhile Chinese pipa expert Min Xiao-Fen plays on one song."

So it read! And now we can start counting down: One, 2, three, four, 5, ...... etc

More Young Knives dates cancelled/rescheduled

That includes Brooklyn...

Calling all US fans:

There have been some double annoying Visa things going down in our world and it looks like we won't be in the states until Tuesday. Some kind of random routine red tape crap twattery. But fear not, we may have to move some shows, but we will try our best not to cancel any. After SXSW we will be coming back east. So far Shows affected are Philadelphia, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Boston and Washington. We have today already confirmed 20th March for the Lunar lounge in Brooklyn and 21st for the Mercury lounge in New York City. Philly, Boston and Washington we will keep you posted and we will never let bureaucracy win.
Tickets for current shows are of course valid for rescheduled shows.

Sorry for the delay my friends. Until then...
Henry

DOWNLOAD: Derrick May - Strings of Life (MP3)

High Tech Soul

Derrick May is one of Techno's earliest pioneers. He and his Detroit neighborhood friends Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins comprise the "The Belleville Three", and have been largely credited with morphing the experimental late-disco sounds of the early 80s into the stark Techno (with a capital T) that gave birth to the hundreds of subgenres of dance music that exist today.

Derrick has been hard at work spreading the Techno gospel since the mid 1980s. His quest brings him and his Hi-Tek Soul party to a rare New York City stop at the Sullivan Room on Saturday night (March 3, 2007). The party and (Hi-Tek Soul brand) is aimed at showing the world that Techno is a music that has been wrongly stereotyped as soulless and cold.

"There's a generation of people that are 21 to 26 years old that don't have any idea what the real techno is all about."
- Derrick May. "Strings of Life" is what Techno is all about:

The above clip is from the documentary "High Tech Soul" by Gary Bredow. It's on DVD, and it's screening from 7-9 at Sullivan Room before the not-coincidentally named Hi Tek Soul party later that night. A Q&A session will follow. Tickets for the whole night can be purchased at Want Tickets. (flyer at the top of this post)

Craig Wedren playing 2 NYC shows - Reno 911, Bright Eyes

Craig Wedren

Bright Eyes plays his first of two shows at Bowery Ballroom tonight (March 2). Craig Wedren is opening, and playing a show at Pianos on Sunday.

Since Friday night's Bowery Ballroom show (w/Bright Eyes) is sold out, we've added a secret-special one (sans Bright Eyes, alas) to end your weekend right.Come hear me and my swashbuckiling band play THIS SUNDAY March 4th, at Pianos. Doors are at 6.45 and we're starting the set at 7pm SHARP. We will be revealing lots of new, awesome songs (old ones, too), and would love to bounce them off you before hitting the studio on Monday. -Craig
Craig also just did the soundtrack for Reno 911:Miami - which, as Klaus pointed out, features members of The State. And Craig reports...
In other news, I'm working on a new record, tentaively titled WAND. I'll start putting demos for that up in a few weeks. Also finishing music for the movie 'The Ten', directed by David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer, Stella, The State), and written by David Wain and Ken Marino (also a Statesman). It'll be out in August. Stay tuned for samples.
Craig also wrote the theme song for the short-lived Stella show on Comedy Central. Four tracks Craig wrote for Reno 911 are streaming at his MySpace.

Chart Attack has a review of the Toronto Bright Eyes show.

The Finches

Thanks to the commenter who pointed out that San Francisco's The Finches are in NYC TONIGHT (March 1) to play Cake Shop with Essie Jain. 3Hive writes

The Finches are all about simplicity and sincerity, but often to a degree that is far more forlorn than ecstatic. Even so, "Daniel's Song" — from the band's EP Six Songs — is so haunting and powerful...
Get that MP3 above. Chart Attack says:
Another folk singer from NYC? Well, almost. While Essie Jain currently calls New York home, she's actually a transplanted Brit whose music hints strongly at her affinity for the city.

The Young Knives stuck in the UK w/ visa issues - Philly & Mercury cancelled

The Young Knives were supposed to kick off a tour in Philly tonight (March 1, 2007). Tomorrow they were supposed to play Mercury Lounge. Instead, they're stuck in the UK with visa issues. As of now their March 3rd Brooklyn show is still happening, but who knows - and if they don't make it to Brooklyn, they'll be the second band that had to cancel playing that show for that reason (first it was the View). Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon - special State & Stella edition

The State

The guys from Stella and The State have been so busy lately that they deserve their own bulleted news summary.

  • Reno 911: Miami (the movie) came out on February 23rd. Most people are aware that the TV cast of Reno 911 is comprised of some ex-State members. However, this film features a cameo by THE ENTIRE CAST OF THE STATE. Yes, I wrote that in all caps because I am that cranked. IFC has an article.
  • Former State cast member Kevin Allison, the Taco Man, has replaced Alex Zalben as artistic director of The Pit. See the newsflash on his personal site
  • David Wain's film The Ten is going to be at SxSW in March. The film features Paul Rudd, Joe Lotruglio, Adam Brody, Bobby Cannavale, Rob Corddry, Kerri Kenny, Gretchen Mol, Oliver Platt, Winona Ryder, Liev Scheiber, Mather Zickel, Justin Thereoux, Jessica Alba, Michael Showalter, Ken Marino, and Zak Orth. CC Insider has some really awesome clips
  • Michael Ian Black has a film coming out in April called The Next Girl I See. It features Jason Biggs, Rob Corddry, AD Miles, and scads more talent.
  • Ken Marino wrote and produced a film showing at SxSW called Diggers. The film is a coming-of-age comedy about four working class friends growing up in Long Island as clam diggers. I'm sold by the premise and the cast alone.
  • Michael Showalter is heading out to Aspen for the HBO Comedy Arts Festival. If you find yourself in Colorado and have the means to get into his shows, he'll be there from 2/28 - 3/3 with Mary Lynn Rajskub (Mr. Show, 24) and John Oliver (The Daily Show). He's also playing at least two shows at SXSW.
  • And last, but not least....""After ten years of popular demand, The State is available again! The first season of the 1993-95 MTV Series is NOW AVAILABLE on iTunes Music Store. Depending on how many people download, MTV will release subsequent seasons, and then eventually, hopefully, a DVD."
I want to dip my balls in it! YouTube videos below...

"We are the Pool"

"Poolaid, a community group dedicated to keeping McCarren Pool open and accessible to everyone, is proud to announce the launch of our new video, "We are the Pool." Starring members of Brooklyn-based indy bands Nada Surf, Maplewood, The Loser's Lounge, Career Club, Breakup Breakdown, The Redcoats are Coming, Naked Highway, and The Giraffes, the video is a loving spoof of the "We are the World" video made in 1984 for USA for Africa."

Official "Pool Parties" trailer, and more info on "We are the Pool" & "Pool Aid" below...

We are the Pool

The video is intended to draw attention to the situation with McCarren Pool here in Williamsburg. Poolaid wants to encourage our community to learn more about the pool and to let the Parks Department and our elected officials know what they want done with the pool. We want the pool to be for the people!

McCarren Pool, situated on the Williamsburg/Greenpoint border in McCarren Park, was built in 1936 as a WPA project. After being shut down in the late 1980s, the pool fell into major disrepair.

In 2005 the pool was reopened as a performance venue. A local group, Jelly NYC, put on free shows every Sunday (see 2nd video above) that drew huge crowds. Noemie LaFrance's dance troupe performed the dance pieces Agora and Agora II. Unfortunately, the Parks Department chose to allow Live Nation, a spin-off and business partner of Clear Channel, to put on shows in the park as well. Live Nation then chose to charge $40 for their concerts.

We think a $40 cover charge for a show in a public park is wrong. Deeply wrong. Why is our pool being used to line the pockets of a corporation known for its predatory business practices? Furthermore, what does this mean for the future of the pool? Will some backdoor deal leave our community with a mini-Madison Square Garden and no pool? North Brooklyn is already lacking in park space and public facilities, and our pool should not be for sale.

And we want to go swimming.

Currently, the Parks Department is accepting permit applications for the summer of 2007. Many in the community hope that one day the pool will be a pool again, and Poolaid fully supports that vision. In the meantime, we encourage people to visit our website. www.poolaid.org, to learn more about the pool and the situation, and to use our easy e-activism section to send their opinions to local decision makers.

Poolaid supports the following:

• As long as the pool is a performance venue it should have diverse programming that serves our community.
• Events in the pool should be cheap or free.
• Money from ticketed events at the pool should go to the pool, not to the city general operating fund.
• The pool is for the people! We urge the Parks Department to set up a community committee and have regularly scheduled meetings for discussion of community concerns. We support Parks working with the Open Space Alliance to set up a community committee.
• There should be a clear timeline and a funding plan for turning the pool back into a pool again.
• Community-supported events should get priority to use the facility over national concert promoters. Keep Live Nation and other corporate interests from putting on for-profit events in our pool. No $50 tickets!

We are the Pool cast:

Lionel Richie: Julian Maile (Spray Paint Star)
Kenny Rogers: Aaron Lazar (Giraffes)
Billy Joel: James Sparber (Breakup Breakdown)
Tina Turner: Sy Boccari (Naked Highway)
Michael Jackson: Jay Honstetter (Black Tie Party)
Diana Ross: Allison Langerak (Breakup Breakdown)

Patrick Watson

Wolf, bear and horse bands are so last year. This year it's all about pandas & Patricks. Not to be confused with the UK's Patrick Wolf (okay, I take back the part about the wolf bands), Patrick Watson is a Montreal singer-songwriter/pianist that will have you thinking Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, M Ward and even Pink Floyd. Already a big star in his hometown, he was just nominated for Canada's "New Artist Of The Year" in the Juno Awards and now he's "sharing chart space with Nelly Furtado".

The song "The Storm" streaming at his MySpace is one of my favorites. Three MP3s to download above, and here's the video for "The Great Escape"...

Listen to more of Patrick's 2006 Canadian album "Close to Paradise" at the album's own website, and see him when he comes to an intimate venue near you. In Manhattan it's Mercury Lounge tomorrow (March 1st). From March 2nd-10th he's on tour with Elvis Perkins. That includes Elvis' Brooklyn date on March 4th. On March 15th Patrick hits Austin for SXSW. All tour dates below...

Patrick Watson - 2007 Tour Dates
Mar 1 - Mercury Lounge, NYC w/ Addison Groove Project & Mancino (tix)
Mar 2 - Tin Angel Philadelphia, Pennsylvania *
Mar 3 - OTA CLUB & CAFÉ Arlington, Virginia *
Mar 4 - Luna Lounge Brooklyn, New York * (tix)
Mar 6 - Local 506 Chapel, North Carolina *
Mar 7 - The Earl Atlanta, Georgia *
Mar 8 - Pilot Light Knoxville, Tennessee *
Mar 10 - Bottletree Birmingham *
Mar 11 - The Parish @ House of Blues New Orleans, Louisiana
Mar 14 - Gypsy Tea Room 7 Ballroom Dallas, Texas
Mar 15 - SXSW - Emo's Austin, Texas
Mar 15 - SXSW - Maggie May's (12:30) Austin, Texas
Mar 17 - Habana Calle (Nick Drake tribute) Austin, Texas
Mar 19 - El Ray Los Angeles, California
May 17 - The Great Escape Festival Brighton, South
May 18 - The Great Escape Festival Brighton, South

* w/ Elvis Perkins

Patrick also goes nicely with a serving of Marissa Nadler.

Jon Brion & Fiona Apple playing benefits for Gungi

Gungi

Hello,lovely people!
fiona,here.
I'm writing to put word out that I am doing two shows at Largo on March 5th & 9th,for my wonderful friend,Gungi.
If you happened to have gone to any of my shows, this past year, and if you liked the way it sounded--that's thanks to Gungi. He does a wonderful job,yes he does--but that is not why I love him.Gungi is one of those people that you just love, really actually LOVE,within five minutes of meeting him.As you may know,I am a girl prone to low-days.I don't know how many times I got to soundcheck,in a grumpy nasty, teary rut,and when I saw Gungi, all nearly seven feet of him, across the empty theatre, and we waved to eachother and he asked me how I was,I immediately got a jolt of life.It is nearly impossible to be in a bad mood around Gungi, even for me.---His face is a pep-talk!--His eyes are HUGS!He's like some mystical, benevolent Giant, right out of a fairytale....Well,I knew when I started writing this, that I wouldn't be able to really say this right, but here's the thing. He's my friend.I love him. He's helped me a lot when I have been in trouble. Now,he is in trouble, and I want to help him.To get his story, please visit www.friendsofgungi.com. If you can come to either of the shows at Largo, they should be pretty fun--Jon Brion,Dave palmer,David Garza,The Watkins(of Nickel Creek),and more...and if you don't come, then maybe you'd like to donate 5 bucks,or something--whatever you decide,I thank you,for being there for me,for giving a damn, and for making noise and for listening.
with so much love,
Fiona

Eastern Conference Champions' gear stolen in LA

Eastern Conference ChampionsDon't leave your gear alone in a van overnight. From MySpace:

Fuck. We just played the last night of our February residency on Monday to a packed house at the Silverlake Lounge, and then all of our gear gets stolen. The van was parked overnight on Sycamore, just east of LaBrea, between 4th and 6th streets. The next morning, our buddy, the green sherrod aka '94 Ford Econoline, was discovered with the passenger side window smashed and all the equipment gone. Everything. Guitars, Drums, Amps, Computers. Everything. The fuckers wiped us out. These pieces of shit even took the time to unscrew the useless TV and VCR out of the overhead console. And all of this happened on a quiet little neighborhood street.

The list of gear and serial numbers will be posted soon, please keep a look out on sites like craigslist or ebay for us. We really appreciate everyone's help. On a brighter note, we're getting ready to play SXSW and head out on the road for a solid two months with some great bands like Mew, The Films and The View. We hope to see you soon, have a few drinks together and curse the bastards that took our stuff. Thanks.

Manitoba's forced to stop having live shows

Manitoba's

Poated on MySpace:

Effective immediately, Manitoba's (yes, the bar owned by The Dictators' own Handsome Dick Manitoba) has been forced to stop all live performances due to a neighbor couple that seems to have ignored the fact they purchased their apartment at an extremely low price because they live directly above a Rock N Roll bar that features live music!!

The bar had a hearing on Feb. 13 brought by complaints from the upstairs douchebags that have been harassing them. The bar lost but they're fighting back and are going to hit these assholes with a big lawsuit.

Live music might return pending a legal hearing, but for the time being the bar must bring it all to a screeching halt. If you see their selfish neighbors, please feel free to throw eggs.

But...YOU CAN HELP!!

They need to find the dates of every day they've had shows there going back to September 2006...that way they can show that the bar's revenue is harmed by the lack of shows, etc.

So, If your band has played Manitobas btw Sept. 2006 and Feb. 2007 send that information to Kevin at barflypro@netscape.net

We dont believe the upstairs douchebags have a chance, but again if you played there during that time, You Can Help!

Let's not lose another live venue, not to mention one of the best places in NYC for free punk shows. Dick's been a great supporter- lets support Him now.

A (second) letter from Martin Perna (Antibalas/TVOTR)

Marin Perna & Amayo of Antibalas in Tokyo, 2005 (CRED - Martin's Flickr)
Martin Perna & Amayo

Martin Perna stopped by the "Martín Perna (Antibalas/TVOTR) calls VOICE cover racist" post to respond to the 91 heated comments already there. Here is what he wrote:

Voice

NOTE: This is a letter from Martin Perna, the original author of the letter to Village Voice regarding the cover with Bob Dylan and Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio.

The question should not be why do I see this cover as racist, but why most of you do not.

I felt the need to respond to the cover, and also to all the responses for several reasons, listed below:

My peoples (Italians/Mexicans/Sicilians/Irish) have all been lynched in American and have a long history of portrayed by white media as less-than white, less than human. Whites lynched Sicilians and Italians by the dozens (check the documentary “Linciati”) in the early part of this century, and were subject to cartoons as ugly as this worse. Mexicans, more visible than ever, bear much of brunt of such hateful imagery and treatment today.

I count myself among handful of Italian-Americans in post-WWII America who have held on to our full heritage and resist the temptation to step into the reprehensible comfort of white privilege. Have I ever received privilege on the lightness of my skin? Of course. Have I confronted this and recognized that this privilege is unjustified? Yes. This letter is just one tiny part of my daily process to recognize this and dismantle white supremacy.

I can confidently say that neither Dylan nor TVOTR--give a damn about winning or losing, This discussion is hardly about that. It's about the horror of being represented in a seemingly innocent but stupid and hurtful manner by people who think they are being clever, then seeing an entire mass of ignorant people jump to their defense rather than taking this as an opportunity to look into themselves, to learn, heal, study and evolve.

Racism exists whether it is intentional or not. My letter was not calling the Voice racist in the same way that the Ku Klux Klan is racist. That would be truly ridiculous. This however, is how many of the readers interpreted it. Most white folks don't believe themselves to be racist because they don't actively or intentionally do racist things, like lynch people, burn crosses, or become members of explicitly racist institutions. However, these same people who call themselves colorblind do nothing to address the systemic and historical racism that is very much alive in the present.

When latent racism is identified in something whites say, do, (or something they are a part of) they will immediately go on the defensive. There are plenty of examples of this on this blog and dozens of others on the Internet a la “I’m very race conscious, but I saw nothing wrong with this…”

Racism is about power, visible and invisible. Therefore, people of color can be prejudiced, but not racist, because there are not systems of power (banks, police, governments, media) at their disposal to give real world power to these prejudices. White people are not routinely and indiscriminately beaten and shot crossing the border from Mexico. Police do not routinely and indiscriminately mistake a candy bar or wallet for a gun in the hand of a white person and gun them down.

Do some people of color say stupid ignorant things about whites and other people of color? All the time. Is it right or justified? No. But it is not and will never be the same because it does not have the same material effect in the world. It is the other side of the sickness of racism and illustrates how everyone suffers. White people, however have never (except in isolated incidents) been victims of the same racial terror that people of color continue to be subjected to as I write this post.

For all the "can't we all be color-blind?" folks: Equality is not about sameness. We are all different, all unique. Equality is about justice. It is about recognizing that from day one in this former British colony that it was set up so that white people would eternally run the show, and because of attitudes like many of yours, not a damn thing has changed.

The same people who saw no racism at all and got uptight and defensive are the same people who refuse to confront white privilege. Until they learn how to acknowledge this and commit themselves to dismantling it, this country (and world) will never reach its potential and will never have peace.

You don't have to like me. You don't have to like any of the music that I am involved in. But you must take these words to heart, because it is much much deeper than indie-rock, a music poll, a cartoon, or a downtown NYC weekly newspaper. Please have the courage to look deeper into yourselves.

You are all in my prayers.

c/s
Martín Perna

PS: A highly relevant book for all people (white and of color) to read: The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, by George Lipsitz.

PPS: Also note that in the full text of my letter, I noted that Dylan was also portrayed in a nasty way, but since I don't know him personally, and because my letter was already long enough (the Voice cut it down some), I didn't go into details about the ugliness of the rendition of Dylan’s age or Jewishness, with the hook-nose, old folks scooter, etc.

PPPS: Other points of correction regarding my musical affilations with TVOTR:
1) Satellite EP: flute on Satellite
2) Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes: flutes and saxophones on 4 songs
3) Return to Cookie Mountain: Flutes and saxophones, percussion on 5 songs
4) Dry Drunk Emperor: flutes

Live:
Many old Bklyn shows (Stinger, Trash) circa 2003, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Prospect Park, Hollywood Bowl, Hammerstein Ballroom, Rio de Janeiro + São Paulo, Buenos Aires festivals.

Capitol/EMI/Astralwerks/Virgin/Warner/RIAA - more news from the front lines

First a record contract, now an Oscar

I shed a tear twice during the Oscars last night - first during Jennifer Hudson's acceptance speech, and then during Ennio Morricone's. But I still couldn't help feeling like a cynical bastard earlier while watching the heartwarming (CNN?) pre-show special on American Idol loser-turned-Dreamgirl Jennifer Hudson - specifically the part where she talked about landing a real life record deal.

I've been following the rumors surrouding the mess that is Capitol Records right now, and the related scandal that is the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Here's the latest....

From the comments:

inouk was dropped from astralwerks last week.
And Bill from Sound Team wrote in the other comments:
us being on a major was never quite right. a very bad fit.

feels great to be free again.

Entertainment Weekly reports on Elvis' daughter..
With the recent merger of Capitol and Virgin Records, one artist that won't be joining the new roster is Lisa Marie Presley. ''Capitol just folded, but I got out right before,'' she told us at the Clive Davis party, where she came as Pink's date. ''I'm free and it's a nice feeling.'' Label or not, Presley is preparing to start on her third album next month and has been writing with husband Michael Lockwood, who produced her last effort, 2005's Now What? But there's no timetable yet, she says. ''I'm going to take my time.''
And from Brooklyn band The Explosion
Hello one and all!

We are writing you from the dead of winter here in Park Slope Brooklyn, with a long over due update about the Explosion and our record, Bury Me Standing. As some of you may know, the record label that we have been working with for the past 3 years, Virgin Records, has decided not to release our new album, and release us from our contract. To some that may be bad news, but to others (who know about the perils of major labels) know that it is not such a bad thing. The good news, is that we have gotten the record back from Virgin, and are in the process of finding a label that may put it out. We will keep you updated. Thanks to all of you who have been writing (over and over again) to find out what is up with the record. We hope to have it out ASAP. Thanks again you all!!!! xoxplsn

Moby doesn't mention anything out of the ordinary:
c-oh, in case you wonder what i'm doing with myself these days, i'm working on my next record. as always i have about 400 songs that i'm trying to narrow down to the 20 or so that will comprise the next record. i don't know when the record will come out, september, maybe? but september's a tricky time to release a record, cos EVERYONE puts out records in september. so suddenly my little record is competing with the heavy hitters. so we'll see. maybe september's the right time to release a new record. maybe it's not. i'll keep you updated(in my clueless way).
In the meantime the RIAA is going after Wi-Fi
If the RIAA has its way, you could be prosecuted if hackers use your home wireless network for things such as downloading copyrighted music or sending spam. Once again, the entertainment industry needs to be stopped.
And the RIAA is going after college students. Ohio University alum be proud:

Ohio University responds.

Boycott the RIAAGizmodo says let's boycott the RIAA in March.

"Firstly, I encourage everyone to purchase music from unsigned bands and bands on independent record labels. There are tons of great artists out there, many of which you're probably already a fan of, that have nothing to do with the RIAA. Buy their records at eMusic, an online store that sells independent tunes in beautiful, DRM-free MP3 format..."
At least it's not all bad news...
Defendant Debbie Foster of Oklahoma was granted attorney fees in Capitol v. Foster, a RIAA copyright infringement lawsuit. The case is RIAA's biggest setback to date.

The Foster case followed a typical pattern for RIAA lawsuits. The Internet subscriber, Debbie Foster, was the first one sued. After discovery her daughter was identified as the likely downloader and then also sued. Debbie Foster countersued as an innocent party. RIAA dropped the suit against the mother, while it continued against the daughter....

Stay strong.

Rage Against the Machine playing more shows w/ Wu Tang Clan - ROCK THE BELLS Festival

Rage & Wu Tang

Good news for those of us not going to Coachella...

"First it was the reunion of the Wu-Tang Clan in 2004. Then it was A Tribe Called Quest later that year. Now, ROCK THE BELLS will make history again as Rage Against The Machine announces their plans to perform three exclusive engagements with the critically acclaimed world-class hip-hop festival this summer. The epic line-up will see Rage Against The Machine join Wu-Tang Clan for two dates on the west coast (August 11--NOS Events Center, San Bernardino, CA, August 18--venue TBA, San Francisco) and for Rock The Bells’ inaugural venture into New York City (JULY 28 - RANDALL'S ISLAND) for their only scheduled appearance on the eastern seaboard this year. The Wu-Tang Clan will support the release of their forthcoming album 8 Diagrams.

Rock The Bells, presented by Guerilla Union since 2003, has established itself as a world-class hip-hop platform by hosting legendary performances by NAS, A Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill, Blackstarr (Talib Kweli and Mos Def), Cuban Linx, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Cypress Hill and Jurassic 5 as well as reuniting Wu-Tang for their last performance with ODB in 2004. This year, the festival will keep in its tradition and showcase the very best the genre has to offer.

“It’s definitely our fans’ dream billing. It’s a tremendous honor to have Rage Against The Machine and Wu-Tang Clan perform together,” states event organizer Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union. “I can’t wait to announce the rest of the line-up for Rock the Bells. It’s incredibly important to put some shine on quality Hip Hop. The opportunity to galvanize the social and political consciousness of these groups is undeniable.”

The complete line-up will be announced March 26th and tickets will go on-sale March 31st at 10:00am."

RIP Arthur Magazine? (2002-2007)

ArthurArthurArthur

Via Pitchfork & Idolator, Arthur published this letter on their website:

Dear Arthur Friends,

As of Friday, Feb. 23rd, Arthur Magazine is on indefinite hiatus. We at Lime Publishing, the current publisher, had been working toward transitioning operations to a new publisher since the start of the year. A breakdown in negotiations this past week pertaining to Lime's 50% share in the magazine led to an unfortunate and perplexing announcement that "Arthur is Dead."

This poorly-timed message was sent out, against explicit wishes of Lime Publishing, to the public before the staff, advertisers or contributors were notified. It was disheartening to receive distressed phone calls from dedicated people in the Arthur community, who devoted their time and creative energy on the magazine.

The flood of calls and emails we've been receiving from friends and readers is heartwarming and reassuring, especially after what has been a difficult time. The support we've seen is tantamount to the strength of the Arthur community. Thank you to staff, contributors, distributors, readers and advertisers for all your dedication. We will post Thank You's on the Arthur site to demonstrate just how many people have contributed in so many ways to Arthur and made it the celebrated paper it is.

The current hiatus may still lead to future opportunities for Arthur, but for the time being we are paring down operations. The website will be kept up as an online store for back issues and other merchandise. An archive of all our Arthur issues as PDFs will also be available for people to access.

Shortly we will be sending notifications to subscribers for options on cancelled subscriptions.

Please check back often for updates.

Sincerely,
Laris Kreslins

Pagoda album stream, shows & a letter from Thurston Moore

Michael Pitt & Thurston Moore

Pagoda's (Michael Pitt) self-titled debut album is out this week on Thurston Moore's (Sonic Youth) Ecstatic label (Universal). I know what you're thinking. So does Thurston...

I had first encountered Michael Pitt in 2000 while composing music for Larry Clark’s film Bully. Of the ensemble of young and crazy actors, it was Pitt who made the most resonant impression on me. His character was of a teenager I had remembered from the recesses of High School USA; giddy, feral and recklessly alluring. Two years later I was introduced to him through filmmaker Gus van Sant when Gus was developing the film concept which became Last Days. Michael arrived at my New York apartment and we immediately hit it off. He was very anxious to work with Gus on the character of Blake, based on Gus’ impressionistic take on Kurt Kobain’s final hours. Michael talked about his band PAGODA which prompted Gus to ask him to play me a song. All I had lying around the apartment was a crummy electric guitar and after some hesitation Michael took it and began to belt out a solo rendition of Lesson Learned, the first track off the Pagoda CD. I was taken aback. Not only by his rag-tag confidence in playing to an audience of two but by the song which was hook driven and emotionally genuine. It was at that moment that I said, “dude let’s do a record.”

PagodaAfter the release of Last Days Michael brought Pagoda to Italy to spend a solid month in Luca Amendolara’s studio to record most of what has become their premier CD. Over 40 songs were recorded as well as a handful more back in Pagoda’s hometown of Brooklyn. By the end of 2004 we had whittled our initial selection down to the tracks which exist on this first disc. Since this time Pagoda has changed radically as a band with almost all new members in place of the recording unit but the intense musical mind of Michael Pitt remains constant.

From what I glean from Michael, he was young kid from New Jersey who migrated to New York City to play rock n’ roll. He fell into a drama workshop of some sort and was cast in a few television programs, and then theatrical film. His star has always been on the rise though his ambitions do not lie in the Hollywood meat market. Pagoda is not a part time job for Pitt; he is not an actor out on vacation here. He is an artist with living expression as his goal and music is where he thrives. And Pagoda as a live band kicks much ass.

The end

Arcade Fire in NYC, on NPR & SNL - videos & MP3s

1) "Intervention" live on Saturday Night Live...

2) "Keep the Car Running" live on Saturday Night Live...

"After the end of the live show, the band stayed and performed three extra songs for the audience and cast members. Win came onto the floor and a veritable dance party of SNL cast members encircled him - the last performer to do anything like this was Bono." [Annie via E-mail]

5) The NPR MP3 & stream from their final amazing NYC performance

6) MP3s from their Thursday & Friday performances in NYC

Slow as I am, I never posted my own review from the NYC shows. You've read so much about these shows already, so I'll just keep things short. I went Friday & Saturday. Friday I left feeling the show could have been better. The Saturday one (the one NPR taped) will without a doubt top my favorite shows of the year - the energy, crowd (listen to the NPR stream & you can hear Win agree), band, double-encore, opening song in the middle of the crowd, etc... - it was realy (I know, overused, meaningless word...) amazing.

Then Saturday night became even double-amazing because from Arcade Fire I ran to the remote Brooklyn location that hosted the secret-ish !!! show. SO GOOD TOO. More on that later though (hopefully).
