Capitol Records dropping lots of bands

Kevin Devine is one of the first to confirm
I was recently dropped by Capitol Records as part of the collateral damage swirling around the Virgin/Capitol merger. I was not surprised, as you need to be acutely aware of sharks when you decide to swim that far out in the ocean, and had been expecting this strange and fun experiment to end almost from the day I signed the dotted line. People like me aren't really supposed to flourish in environments like that, but it was worth a shot, and I definitely gained and learned much more than I lost over the course of my time with the label, and would like to thank the people I worked with there for treating me well and making my transition a surprisingly smooth and rewarding one, both at the outset and ultimately at the end.Other artists rumored to be among those dropped: The Dandy Warhols, Sound Team, Shout Out Louds, The Redwalls, Otep, Fischerspooner, The Vines, and Airbourne.I hold no ill will and harbor no grudge against Capitol Records; I'm thankful I had the opportunity to make a record I love with a producer I've long respected and admired in studios I'd read about but never expected to track in. I'm thankful for the initial faith and realize the 'they' that brought me in and worked closely with me for the past year and a half were largely turned over, and so not the same 'they' that ushered me out.
Employees are going too. Possibly Jax.
Morningwood, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Decemberists, OK GO and Lily Allen are likely safe. Moby's future is uncertain.
Know more? Please send in your tips.

Morningwood is still together? I have such a hatred for that band.
Kevin Devine is a nice writer and a stand up dude. I've hung out with him a lot, this show of pluck is no surprise. He's got more records in him, I don't doubt it.

why is morningwood safe? ugh.
Posted by Anonymous | February 21, 2007 11:15 AM
kevin devine sucks. can't believe he was ever signed to a major in the first place. he should go back home and cry.
shout out louds are pretty fantastic though.

kevin devine is a great guy with a heart of gold, and a great musician/songwriter. He helps other musicians whenever he can and is quite selfless. The above poster is simply looking for attention as we all know.

Lily Allen is a miracle

Morningwood is a good band, what are you crazy.
sucks for Kevin Devine. Saw him at Northix during CMJ, he seems pretty cool. Not my fav, but pretty good sounding.

that was a well-written note.
Kevin Devine is a great person. No one who has met him or knows anything about him would ever say anything bad about him.

I've worked with Kevin Devine 2 or 3 times, and he's always really nice. I was always surprised by the fact that he was on Capitol, but like he says maybe it wasn't meant to be. I don't understand the hating above, he's a cool dude who who plays good music - it's a shame he's been dropped.

I love it how that person's blog is called Rock Insider. Sounds more like Rock Nobody to me.

kevin devine is a class act.

unfortunately bands getting dropped from major labels at the drop of a hat and people getting laid off from them is hardly anything new. all the more reason that bands should stick with indies.

kevin devine may be a standup guy and all, but as a musician, he's terrible. and because i am a music fan who spedns a considerable amount of time and money towards that hobby, i am allowed to voice that opinion without ever having to "meet" him.

might wanna wait until more than one band is actually dropped before you make the "lots of bands" claim
Posted by Anonymous | February 21, 2007 12:29 PM
the music industry is by far the worst run industry around...thats why no major labels are stand alone...they have to merge with an 'entertainment company.'
i know plenty of career a&r guys who never had a hit and they just get their lawyers to pass them on to different labels for their entire lives.

The Warhols on the outs? That'd be a shame if the rumor is true, but then again it's all just a rumor. I'm sure they'd find a new home but who knows if they'd even want one. Their own studio in Portland pays the bills and allows them a great deal of commercial freedom, and it wouldn't be a surprise if they just marketed their own music online.

morningwood are a highschool battle of the bands winner who somehow got a&r money in back of them. there's nothing there.
whether or not you like kevin devine's music, he is, as everyone says, a really nice guy. he deserves an indie that cares about his music.
i feel i am justified to say this, as i am a graphic designer.

i like the dandy's. have since the first record. but wasn't so much into their last one. can someone though please find that new remix of "we used to be friends" they use on veronica mars? it's so good! and last nights episode, oh boy, so awesome.
Posted by stephen king | February 21, 2007 1:28 PM
i'd rather get raped by a polar bear than listen to that last dandy warhols album. worst. shit. ever.
Posted by Anonymous | February 21, 2007 1:59 PM
This is pretty depressing right here.
There's a great comment in Dig! about how some 90 percent of artists fail to break even on sales. As a result, record labels are forced to depend on all the Jay-Zs and Christina Aguileras to carry the loss. It's a pretty unworkable system if you really think about it.
You can't sustain a business simply by making cuts. You have to restructure it in such a manner that you're not spending a ridiculous amount of money on unnecessary tours or promotion. You have to embrace new technologies and means of distribution. Major labels are no longer the single distributor of recorded music. Why can't they wise up?
Posted by Colonel K | February 21, 2007 2:57 PM
the warhols have consistantly evolved on each album. the last record was definately a unique turn in that evolution and not an easy pill to swallow on first taste but it deserves repeated listens and is really a grower. the majority of the record is unique and borderline brilliant.
keep on jerking off to your peter, bjorn, and arcade fire (or whatever else every other douchebag hipster is told to like this week)

I heard the Redwalls got dropped.
Also, I heard that Sound Team got their record deal because one of the fellas was related to a Capitol exec, so if they got dropped that's not surprising.
Posted by helloooo | February 21, 2007 9:16 PM
the Dandy warhols whould love to get out of their contract with capital they never needed capitol after dig capital always will make bucks with their publishing thats where they rape the bands think beatles
Posted by lahipster | February 21, 2007 9:35 PM
hey lahipster think punctuation
Posted by Michael Quirk | February 21, 2007 10:57 PM
When did Capitol have the publishing rights to the Lennon-McCartney songs or George Harrison's songs?
Posted by eh? | February 21, 2007 11:32 PM
"Also, I heard that Sound Team got their record deal because one of the fellas was related to a Capitol exec."
This is not true.

re: Anon 12:26 & 27
c'mon, what's with the commment on kevin devine being 'terrible'? first off... i feel like 'terrible' only works regarding an artist that is legitimately bad at something they are trying to do. "that guitarist is terrible, he's missing all the notes".
i believe your comment may be in regards to the style of music he plays. and hey, i'm not really an acoustic singer/songwriter fan myself but i certainly can't see the point of denouncing something because of it's characteristics. what is this, middle school?
"What kind of music do you listen to?"
"Everything except Country and Rap suck!"
"Indie! Popular music sucks!"
"Blue! Red and Yellow are for pussies!"
and PS if you've never met someone don't go around being mean. this world has too much mean in it.
PPS learn how to post
Posted by alx | February 22, 2007 2:19 AM
kevin Devine is good at what he does. Anyone that says he is terrible is just an asshole trying to stir people up.
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 8:42 AM
Warhols aren't dropped.
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 10:25 AM
its a crime the shout out louds will be dropped. I think they have a new album ready to go...
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 11:56 AM
who the hell is kevin devine how does everyone know him personally?
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 12:00 PM
kevin devine is a lyrical genius, and everyone knows him personally because he's basically the hardest working (and hands-down nicest) guy in the music industry. how many shows did you play last year? kevin played 300 plus. that's more days than anyone posting here worked last year, i'm willing to bet.
so if you're surprised that everyone knows him personally, don't be. he pays his dues and lives to gig, and the next time he plays your town (because he will) i strongly suggest you go, and introduce yourself to him after the set, and you'll find out what everyone else here is talking about.
i think this whole capitol mess is a blessing in disguise for kevin, and he'll bounce back on one of the great indies out there, like nothing even happened. and i for one, look forward to whatever he comes out with next.
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 12:32 PM
i bet thats kevin devine posting all the info about himself!
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 1:13 PM
Why do people respond to anyone who says vacuous things anonymously? I thought that whole flaming war thing was so 1996 when AOL was big.
Posted by Jack | February 22, 2007 1:20 PM
is that rumor about someone in the sound team being related to a capital exec true? i always wondered why they were on a major label. something never just seemed right.
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 1:47 PM
hi
none of us are related to capitol employees.
and us being on a major was never quite right. a very bad fit.
feels great to be free again.
Posted by bill | February 22, 2007 2:28 PM
Devine's a stand up kid. I'm rolling in my friggin grave over this.
Posted by Frank | February 22, 2007 3:18 PM
Hey LA Hipster...Capitol doesn't make money off the majority of the beatles publishing. just recordings. sony/atv publishes the majority of lennon/mcartney. check the back of any recent beatles release and you would know that...I put a few extra periods in this post for you to use on future ones as well.
And just to sum up a few things...kevine devine is alright, morningwood has some catchy tunes but minimal record sales, Same with the warhols(5 years ago maybe, soundteam should have never signed to capitol to begin with and lily allen will never be a major artist in the staes.
Posted by JG | February 22, 2007 5:37 PM
Did former capitol big wig Andy Slater really post this?
"keep on jerking off to your peter, bjorn, and arcade fire (or whatever else every other douchebag hipster is told to like this week)"
If so andy, i agree.

Kevin Devine is from NJ and lives in Brooklyn, which is probably how people here know him
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 6:20 PM
dandies ARE dropped
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 6:21 PM
devine is from staten island
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 7:41 PM
what about shitty ass yellowcard?
Posted by Anonymous | February 22, 2007 8:31 PM
what fuckhead signed the F-Up's?
wonder if the person with pink slips wore that shirt the day of the layoff bloodbath.
Posted by Capt Rock | February 22, 2007 8:55 PM
Lily Allen is signed in the UK where she is fast heading towards triple platinum, she wont get dropped because they arent the repertoire owners. Its early days for her, there was never any expectation for it to be huge from the outset in the US. give the kid a chance motherfuckers, she is 21 years old and already a huge success. She also ACTUALLY debuted pretty high in the billboard charts for a debut UK artist. EMI UK also gave them corinne bailey rae too, so big up them for their A&R.
Posted by J Nasty | February 23, 2007 5:51 AM
Oh and also LCD Soundsystem came through from the UK..
Posted by J Nasty | February 23, 2007 5:53 AM
Sound Team was dropped? You gotta be kidding me. They make great music. I bet there are tons of labels who are eager to pick them up.
Posted by snickerdoodle | February 24, 2007 4:15 AM
i'm not really the most-informed person with all of this, but everything i've heard from people who know more suggests that capitol's practically gone. nearly every band is getting dropped, most A&R and other execs are getting laid off, and the label as it used to exist will soon be nonexistent. again, that's hearsay, but it makes sense given the circumstances. which is unfortunate, i guess... for some reason i always liked capitol.
btw, i don't think it really should be any suprise that sound team is getting dropped, but they were signed by capitol due to a bidding war, not nepotism. in any case, they're music's too good to be wasted on a label that obviously had their priorities in other places.
Posted by jared | February 25, 2007 4:02 PM
this is all old news. it wasnt a merger, it was a takeover. Everyone at Capitol was fired except for 2 a&r guys that were not prominent, one publicst, one product manager, and a few radio people.
the bands that were saved were bands that at leats showed the ability to make a profit.
Posted by hank | February 26, 2007 1:20 PM
people are still talking about shitty ass emi? do people actually care? i was one of the many who got laid off from emi. good riddance.
Posted by Anonymous | February 26, 2007 4:20 PM
otep was also dropped

nice one so capital drop their best two bands, The Dandy Warhols and The Vines. yeah - good one - idiots
Posted by Nick Berry | November 15, 2007 8:04 AM
The Vines could be on a label with only two bands, and still will not be among that label's two best bands.
