Pitchfork reported the other day that actress Jena Malone (MySpace, website, IMDB) is releasing music on experimental NYC label The Social Registry. She's also playing the following shows:

you would think that after being in so many movies she'd be able to afford some singing lessons.

Her early stuff sounds solid. You can tell she knows her stuff, I can hear her influences,
and I'd put her up against a lot of stuff people say is "good." And, hell, she says Townes Van Zandt is an influence on her myspace page-- in spite of the fact that she spelled his name wrong). All of the people I love in indie rock can't sing for god's sake. Hello, Bob Dylan. Try to at least be thoughtful with your commentary and not just whiplash your comments into a 'actress=can't sing or do anything else category.' Unfortunately we live in a society which labels and then drives by on almost every topic (from politics and religion on down the line)-- and the people who claim to be "open minded" are often the first culprits of this.
