Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon (02/09/07)

3 of 4 members of Trenchmouth reunited @ a wedding in 2006 (VIA)
Trenchmouth

Comedian, musician and Prince impersonator Fred Armisen put himself on the other side of the camera again recently by directing a music video for the band Tigers And Monkeys who happen to be fronted by fellow comedian and Variety Shac member Shonali Bhowmik. Fred previously directed a music video for the band the Helio Sequence. Tigers and Monkeys play Hiro Ballroom in NYC on March 8th.

And in other musical Fred Armisen news - that IS in fact Fred you can hear guest drumming on the latest Thunderbirds Are Now album. It isn't a stretch - as you might know, Fred also used to play drums in a band called Trenchmouth. Here's a video from 1992.

In 2006 Fred interviewed fashionista Cat Power.

More news and upcoming comedy events below....

THINGS YOU SHOULD DO THIS WEEK AND NEXT

  • 2/9/07 - 2/10/07, Comix: John Oliver. I've seen him a few times since his performance at the Invite Them Up show at Bowery and he is easily one of the greatest comics around.

  • 2/11/07, 7:30pm Comix: Reggie Watts. The football season is over. Go see some comedy for crying out loud

  • 2/13/07, 8:00pm The Pit: Here's The Thing. This may be sold out by the time you read this. Line-up includes Andrew WK, Michael Showalter, Tom Shillue, and Kristen Schaal.

  • 2/14/07, 8:00pm UCB Theater: The Rejection Show’s Valentine’s Day Heartbreak Haven. More than 10 performers as well as live music, love song karaoke, booze, a keg, and more.

  • 2/15/07, 9:30pmUCB Theater: The Dave Hill Explosion. Featuring the actual cowboy from the Village People Randy Jones and more.
IN OTHER NEWS

Human Giant

I'm a huge fan of Aziz Ansari and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of his new MTV show Human Giant which he's been working on with Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, and Jason Woliner. A short film featuring The Illusionators was recently leaked. ENJOY! Oh, and if anyone knows where Cody Austin is, by Cod, contact Aziz immediately.

I heard rumors that fashionista Devendra Banhart made an appearance on Wonder Showzen, but never actually saw it. I couldn't find it anywhere. Then I stumbled upon this article on Pitchfork which pointed me in the right direction. The full episode can be found HERE.

Here's The Thing kicked off their residency at The Pit on 2/6/07. The place was unfortunately pretty empty and at times it felt a little awkward, but I'm not worried; Sean O'Connor, Nick Maritato, and Andrew Wright are such great hosts and comedians and the show line-ups are so strong that this weekly show is destined to be NYCs next comedy staple. Seriously. Next week's line-up includes Andrew WK, Michael Showalter, Tom Shillue, and Kristen Schaal. Check out the Here's The Thing interview on Gothamist. And listen to Andrew WK on the Sound of Young America.

A short while back, City Rag posted an article about Mike Meyers doing a show as a character called Guru Pitka. They were kind enough to give very good ticketing info. Unfortunately, tickets went quick and not even The Apiary got in. Details on the disappointment here. On a brighter note, Alivefromnewyork got in.

Speaking of The Apiary... They have been closely covering a developing story involving a recent Budweiser Super Bowl ad that bears a striking resemblance to a Whitest Kids video. The Whitest Kids broke the story on their site on 2/4. On 2/5. The Apiary threw in their two cents on the topic. Then on 2/6 the New York Post posted an article about the potential rip-off. Finally, today, The Apiary disclosed a smoking gun that might be pretty damaging to Budweiser. Joke / Bit / Material theft is nothing new in the comedy business.

If you like Patton Oswalt and fashionista David Byrne, then you'll either love or hate THIS

GUTENBERG! THE MUSICAL! has graduated from the UCB Theater to the realm of off-Broadway. The award-winning hit comedy has just opened in its new home at The Actors Playhouse in the West Village. Tickets are a whopping $50.00, but if you buy your tickets before the end of February you'll be eligible for a Buy 1 Get 1 Free Offer. Just use the code GU2FER3. You can also order by phone at 212-947-8844.

And now a word from our sponsor...

More comedy news on David Cross and SXSW right....HERE.

Radar magazine is back on the shelves (believe it or not) and has a large article discussing various joke thieves over the years. Apparently Robin Williams was so notorious as a thief when he would enter a comedy club the act on stage would always immediately stop their act as to not let him hear any jokes.

Live comedy is one of the most painful things in the world. I really don't understand why BV publishes comedy updates... yech.

stop...using...the word...fashionista. please.

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2007 10:40 AM

If live comedy is painful to you, I'm guessing you have other issues you need to work on before you can enjoy comedy... or life in general.

Sorry, you're right, EVERYONE is supposed to enjoy live comedy. If you don't, you're automatically a miserable person. Thanks for your assessment though, sincerely appreciate your empty, pointless comment.

anon... so, i guess your first comment was not empty and pointless then?

Posted by Anonymous | February 9, 2007 11:31 AM

Y'all, if you don't like comedy updates, don't read them. Right? RIGHT?! Don't complain about stuff you have the free will to avoid. Or do. Whatevs
