I just got this email from a reader:
I was hoping you might be able to help me with something. I'm looking for music for a video I'm making for my daughter's pending adoption. Hate to use same old tired songs that come to mind. Could you recommend some better, perhaps more obscure songs about children, parenting, love, etc? I came across a Dar Williams song called "The One Who Knows" that was pretty good, but can't find too much else.I couldn't think of anything off the top of my head, but leave it to Wikipedia to have a page entitled "List of songs about children". I'd like to see this guy use "Mommy's Little Monster" by Social Distortion, "Throw Away Children" by Dio, or even "Youth Gone Wild" by Skid Row, but maybe Pink Floyd's "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" and/or Lou Reed's "Beginning of a Great Adventure" might be more appropriate. Any other suggestions? Help him out in the comments.

And Speaking of kids...
* Dan Zanes is touring
* Justin Timberlake to host Kid's Choice Awards
* Britain's indie bands making children's albums
* Alec Ounsworth working on a children's album
* Tiny Masters of Today playing NYC, London, SXSW
* 14 year-old Hayes Peebles playing Movable Hype
* Mirah, Mudhoney, Mary Timony & others "play" on new kids CD

anyone know anything about the view?

Hayes Peebles is the worst
Posted by Anonymous | February 4, 2007 3:38 PM
Hey anon, Hayes Peebles is 14. Pick on someone your own size.

The View's album is solid. The first half is really good but the album runs out of steam in the 2nd half. Sounds a lot like The Libertines, but with a pretty neat Dundee accent. Spiky Libertines-esque guitars too.
The Kooks album is sort of fun, but from what I've seen, they suck live. Plus, I don't go to live shows from bands who produce mellow music - like waving my head from side-to-side type music.

Kooks has four letters?

"Kooks has four letters?" oops.

Fun selection of children's songs, BV. But part of the answer to your query on behalf of your reader indeed is the item about The Kooks. Have him or her check his or her copy of "Hunky Dory." The compilation begins and ends there.

kids music? Jackson 5 all the way suckas.

How about Danzig's "Mother" ?. Essentially about children--children being killed, but children nonetheless.

what about "hell is for children"?

"my daughter's pending adoption"
His (adult) daughter is adopting a child?
He is in the process of adopting a girl and even though it's not official yet, he's already referring to her as his daughter?
He's giving up his daughter for adoption?
Enquiring minds want to know!
Posted by :-D | February 4, 2007 8:01 PM
For the enquiring mind ...
The second guess was right. She's been my foster daughter for some time; we're only now on the verge of making it official.
Sorry about the confusing sentence. I might have been more careful if I thought BV would post it.
Thanks for your interest.

Conratulations egn -
I can wholeheartedly recommend They Might Be Giants' "No!"
http://www.amazon.com/No-They-Might-Be-Giants/dp/B000068C97/sr=8-1/qid=1170648155/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-7229448-1675052?ie=UTF8&s=music
Another favorite of the little girl in my life was/is "For the Kids"
(Cake's version the Muppet show song "Hahna Mahna" is great)
http://www.amazon.com/Kids/dp/B00006L7QX
Pitchfork has also discussed indie rock kids music in the past, like the Belle and Sebastian curated compilation "Colours are Brighter":
http://www.amazon.com/Colours-Are-Brighter-Children-Grown-Ups/dp/B000HOMLNS/sr=8-1/qid=1170647116/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-7229448-1675052?ie=UTF8&s=music
This one, "See You on the Moon", is cut from the same cloth:

This one looks good to me -"The Bottle Let Me Down"
http://www.amazon.com/Bottle-Let-Me-Down-Songs/dp/B000066JE8/sr=8-9/qid=1170647439/ref=pd_bbs_9/103-7229448-1675052?ie=UTF8&s=music
I cant vouch for these though.
Finally, Im from SF, ,and we have two fairly popular kids rock bands around here, the Sippy Cups and the Dead Hensons. You may want to check their websites for mp3s and such.
Good luck and have fun, and as Chris Rock says "dear lord, keep my baby off the pole!"

"He's giving up his daughter for adoption?"
That's what I thought.

i didn't like the kooks, nothing speacial. You can find this kind of guitar bands on Myspace -- more than thousand band.
the view's record is a little glittery but they're not Wow, OH, Amazing, band of my life. Also sure these are my opinions, i think NME is one the worst music magazine. Their recommendations, artist spots --(oh, god help me)--totally sucks. Uncut is better , if you look for a good magazine.

The Dead Hensons?! That sounds like a poor choice for the name of a group that performs music for the kiddies.
Which Henson besides Muppets creator Jim Henson has died?
