Pumping Up Indie Music in CT
"Last September, Manic Productions landed the first show on a fall tour by The Hold Steady, a Brooklyn rock group that Blender magazine named its 2006 band of the year. The quintet performed before 180 people in a tiny basement in the Masonic Temple in Hamden before heading back to New York the next night to play to a packed house at Irving Plaza, a 1,000-capacity ballroom." Connecticut's for fucking

Yeah, they had a Mates of State show a couple years back at an American Legion. Basically it was a 20x20 room filled with teens. It ended up being so packed that I walked in without anyone noticing.
(It might have also helped that MoS are CT locals too).

It's awesome to see us CT independent promoters especially awesome ones such as Mark getting some exposure. Connecticut had a lame hardcore scene for a while but people fail to realize all the amazing indie bands popping up around here now.

There was actually an "Indie Music Festival" in New London last September. Girl Talk, Rainer Maria, Calla, Rye Coalition, Matt & Kim all played, as did local groups. Looks like they are planning another one for April 28.

Shag Frenzy will be showing DC's oh-so-fine Middle Distance Runner some love tomorrow! 9pm @ Sweet Jane's on Pratt Street in Hartford. Dancing, drinking, and debauchery are sure to ensue...

CT has come a long way over the years and is finally starting to get some good shows, whether it's at Toad's Place or a Masonic temple. My friends are getting ready to see the Thermals at some small, bootleg club. Should be fun. I'm glad that all my CT friends, and me when I go home, have shows to go to.
"peace Connecticut!"

Bar in New Haven has shows on Sunday nights - Sundazed at Bar (www.myspace.com/shakipresents). Calla played their a couple of weeks ago and Adult and Erase Errata are playing their in April. Animal Collective, Man Man, Wolf Eyes, Dungen, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, the Thermals, the French Kicks, and Enon have played their in the last couple of years.

Greg's right, I went to up to the festival last year and had a great time. I'm probably a little biased though, having lived in New London for 9 years and being good friends with most of the organizers and a few of the bands involved. These guys have been working their asses off to get the scene in N.L. area wider known in CT. N.L. has a really vibrant art scene and has spawned some great local bands: Can Kickers, Fatal Film, Quiet Life, Ringers and many more.
I really like what these Manic guys are doing, but hope they are still working with the N.L. people like Sean and Rich.
Also, I'm trying to talk them out of doing the next one on the 28th since a lot of bands will be unavailable due to Coachella. Thought they learned their lesson last year after having it the same weekend as ACL.
Oh yeah, and Girl Talk almost brought the stage down...literally!!!

yo papo,
yeah, definitely. with a lineup like the one last year- people would definitely drive up from ny.

Connecticut shows suck. Fort Sunshine in New Haven is some of the better stuff going but most of the rest "indie" stuff in New London and around New Haven is a lot of just super generic tossaway stuff; though BAR does good shows but they're all 21+. Is there much of a difference between generic jangly indie-pop bands for scenesters to get drunk to in basements and generic bar rock bands at Toad's Place for other people to get drunk to? The biggest problem is an intense lack of any decent music from within the state (with of course exceptions). Mark means well though.

Brian Frenette will always be the Lord of the CT Scene and my heart

Well, to be honest, New Haven really has to make sure that their last trains aren't 11-something - as that makes seeing the bands you want to see impossible, especially when they go on at 11... *sigh*
still got a long way to go....
