Sirius and XM merger official

"Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio are to merge in a $13 billion tie-up that gives subscribers access to entertainers such as Oprah Winfrey and shock-jock Howard Stern, the companies said on Monday." [Yahoo]

This also means XM subscribers will now get to hear "Blog Radio" featuring shows by ProductShop (Mondays), Brooklyn Vegan (me) (Tuesdays), Gorilla Vs Bear (Wednesdays), and My Old Kentucky Blog (Thursdays).

I wouldn't get too excited over this just yet. This deal has a long way to go before approval...

Wow! A new branch of media now owned by one large company! That can only be a good thing!

still a waste of money...there are enough cds and free streaming radio stations out there to keep my ears occupied

"This also means XM subscribers will now get to hear 'Blog Radio'..."

Are you SURE about that? No doubt the management of the merged companies would look to save money by providing as much identical programming to Sirius hardware and XM hardware alike. Maybe Blog Radio would get the axe.

Howard Stern might be an exception. The management might figure that some parents would prefer to be certain that their kids can't tune in his show and thus he could be kept Sirius-only.

The reason I cancelled my XM subscription this past November was not the content, it was the terrible sound quality and constant dropouts. I don't see how this merger will address that issue.

Music stations are being compressed to the nth degree to make room for new material without new bandwidth. XMU was sounding like an old cassette by the time I gave up; I even turned down their offer for a free few months since it had simply become unlistenable.

Would be interested in hearing other listeners' experience.

that's funny, sam. although i think fubu would more likely merge with popeye's.

^^^^^^^
As David Brent would say, "not racial"

birdboy: Constant dropouts? Where do you live? I'm a Sirius subscriber (duh) and in NYC and a number of other cities there are terrestrial repeaters to beam the signal to local spots that can't reliably get the satellite signal. I'm sure XM has repeaters, too.

("1,2,3 — Repeater!")

As for sound quality, 99% of the time I listen to Sirius is on a boombox in the bathroom, so I don't expect high sound quality.

how much time do you spend in the bathroom? in all siriusness, i agree with "Wow! A new branch of media now owned by one large company! That can only be a good thing!" and "just wake me up when kfc and fubu agree to merge." and to a lesser extent "that's funny, sam. although i think fubu would more likely merge with popeye's." --Isn't this um, oh what do they call it. um, it involves fake money and railroads.. a monopoly.
