What is this "superbowl" of which you speak?
Posted by eh? | February 4, 2007 6:33 PM
Anyone else notice the RIDICULOUS amount of pitch-correction that Billy Joel had to use? It sounded fucking awful.

I enjoyed the half-time show, anyone have any feedback on how the Cat Power show was?
Posted by Mark W. | February 4, 2007 8:40 PM
i actually stood on line for my cat power tix. doors were supposed to open @ 7pm but actually didnt open till 7:30pm. so all of us were stuck outside in 15 degree weather, with the wind blowing in our direction on top of it.
but i sold out my ticket for $40 so i could watch this Super Bowl thingy. Thank god i have a ticket for tomorrow night.
Posted by rod | February 4, 2007 10:03 PM
when did you get to the venue rod?
Posted by h | February 4, 2007 10:14 PM
got there at 6:15pm but there were only about 5 people on line so i went back to my car. got back on line around 6:50, figuring it would open in 10 minutes. but nope, 7:30 they opened up.
OHHH the reason for the late opening was because she was doing her soundcheck at 7pm. Like she couldn't have done it earlier, so people wouldn't have had to freeze outside any longer than they needed to.

cat power was horrible!!!!! that junkie needs to learn how to shut up and play songs... her own songs, enough with the covers!

I'm with you anonymous, HORRIBLE! seriously, nothing she said made any sense. What a nut job.

After the great show she had at Irving Plaza I had high hopes for tonight's show. Having the intimate setting at the Hiro with everyone sitting down was another plus.
And then....there was the show.
Eek. She seemed to not have any idea what to do really. I guess we all just got a taste of what people have always complained about her shows. I was lucky that my first Cat Power show was that great Irving Plaza one or else I'd be pissed.
Hopefully the show tomorrow will be more together.
"Play 'I Found a Reason'".
"Oh yeah, I *was* gonna play that..."
*sigh*

Not nearly as brilliant as her Town Hall show last summer, but still some good moments. A few, anyway.
How was the Superbowl? Any good commercials?
Posted by Qbertplaya | February 5, 2007 1:27 AM
Hiro Ballroom is an amazing space, but the sound was pretty bad. Plus, Chan is a kook. Still her voice sounded amazing. She could use some dance lessons though.
Posted by Leah | February 5, 2007 9:24 AM
Chan is joining the Kooks? Is that confirmed????...
Posted by iluvthekooks | February 5, 2007 9:58 AM
haha. I realized the huge post about the kooks after I wrote my comment. What I meant is; Chan is quite the eccentric.

I'm a big fan of Cat Power's music and I love her last album. A good friend warned me never to pay money to see her live, but since I heard she's sober now, I figured she would prove him wrong. Sunday's Cat Power show was the worst show I'd ever seen. Seriously. She would start a song, stop, start over, quit, start a new song, repeat. Many songs she would get all the way through, but only after losing track of tempo and key. Then she would "banter" with her guitarist (and the crowd) between songs for several minutes. She was rambling, barely coherent. She was slurring her words, attempting to charm us with anecdotes that went nowhere and usually made no sense. At one point (I'M NOT EVEN KIDDING!), she pointed at a two women dancing in the corner and yelled, "Look at the gays!" She laughed and followed up with, "The gays! In the hallways!" The crowd laughed at her little rhyme and then applauded! I couldn't believe it. Those women were completely mortified. And the audience was indulging this behavior like she was some sort of charming yet spoiled mentally ill nine-year-old. Yes, she has beautiful voice. But come on. She's sober now? Really? You coulda fooled me.

She'll never learn her lesson--never never ever mix your anti-psychotic drugs with alcohol!

you were warned not to waste your time...

Why is everyone talking about Cat Power and not that completely kick-ass Guyz Nite video? Weak. Cat Power sucks.
Posted by H.Q. Penniesworth | February 5, 2007 12:11 PM
cat power could (and does) basically get up on stage and drool and fans will (and do) applaud.
who are the idiots here?
Posted by soup monster | February 5, 2007 12:30 PM
what time do you think i should get there tonight ?
Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2007 12:31 PM
well, how long do you feel like waiting in line?
Posted by jim | February 5, 2007 12:35 PM
what time was the show scheduled to start last night...no opening act, right?

The comments here about Chan Marshall’s erratic, unbalanced performance last night are unfortunately true. She seemed to unravel more and more as the evening went on. Camera flashes went off constantly. There were a few detours to say the least - some odd memories/stories, an offer to play requests, then a polite refusal to play any of those requests. Judah Bauer returned to help her get through a few last tunes. The set ended, lights up.
Anyone who paid money to see yesterday’s show, or any show where Cat Power blows a fuse, is entitled to their opinion and has every right to be bitter. Given the numerous positive reports from her recent concerts, my expectations were high just like a lot of other people. However, I’m more than happy to give the girl a break. Her battle to beat depression and the addiction to booze has been well documented. 2006 was obviously a year of extreme highs and lows for her. Is this a justification for her behavior? No. Alright, yes, it is.
She has struggled so much, and maybe it sounds melodramatic, but I am glad for the simple fact she has managed to stay alive. Sure, I’d like her to permanently stay away from the sauce. Take those pills. Purchase a magical calendar that indicates the right days to go on stage and the wrong ones so she can plan accordingly. Enough. That calendar doesn’t exist and even if it did, I would be tempted to break into her house and steal it. For those of you who are still wondering if anything amazing happened at the Hiro last night - the solo piano cover of “Who knows where the time goes” was stunning. And while she only managed to get out a verse or two of “I’ve been loving you to long” she captured the pain and beauty of that song better than any living musician on the planet. I think Otis Redding would agree.

I don't think anyone wishes Chan any ill will, but if she has such little respect for her fans that she'll take their $25 and play complete crap--then screw her. Everyone has their demons, and she is struggling through her's---but it pisses me off when I'm broke, but pony up the cash to see her--and she mails it in.

beautiful post (on cat power). and spot on. thanks.

Hey, I'm something of a wack job myself; you guys should each give me $25, too.

Nice summation, Anon 1:51.
Camera flashes went off quite a bit, but I think a lot were from this one big bald dude who stood/sat on the edge of the stage right in front of her and would pop a lot of pics with a big camera with flash and hold up a video camera at her just a few feet away from her face while she was at the piano.
I was annoyed for her, thinking, who does this dude think he is? Paparrazo getting all in her face, but then she addressed him by name and in Italian at one point, and he replied something to her, so I guess he was her official photographer or something.

@ Anon 1:51
OK, I agree that Chan Marshall has some demons that she's working through.
Unfortunately, those demons did not offer a refund at the end of the performance.
You make it sound like she's this sad little thing that needs our pity. But she wasn't sad. She was obnoxious.
Makes feeling bad for her more difficult. That and the 60 bucks I spent for our tickets.

enough with all the negativity already! if you people just want to hear cat power songs stay home and listen to her CD's. if you want to see a performance that is spontaneous, from the heart and REAL than come down, relax, have a beer and enjoy the show!
PS- Chan i was at all your shows this week- MOMA and the HIRO- and i have nothing but praise for you. thank you for introducing me to susanna and letting me play with mona.

"Enought with all the negativity alread"???
What's this forum for? It was a bad show. A really bad show, that wasn't worth $30 or waiting on line in the freezing cold. From what other's are saying, the Monday night show was better. But, oh well, too bad for me, I guess. I think the bigest problem with Sunday's show, was that it was only an hour. She started 2 hours late. We should have at least gotten half our money back, right?
