Ted Leo - new album, MP3, and secret show?

DOWNLOAD: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists- The Sons of Cain (MP3)

Ted Leo Living with the Living

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists' "Living with the Living" is out March 20, 2007. The first officially released track "the sons of cain" is available for download above. The Battering Room points out that tickets are also on sale for an extremely suspicious show by "The Sons of Cain" at Mercury Lounge in NYC on February 25th. If this is in fact Ted, it will be much more intimate than where he's playing when he goes on tour.

Just hope you don't end up seeing these guys:

I'd pay $10 just to see everyone's face when it turns out to be those guys.

Posted by jerry | February 15, 2007 3:42 PM

checked their myspace and page. they don't have any shows nor are they playing anywhere. ted does have the day open with the first show of the tour a couple days later. make sense that it'd be him.

Both openers' websites specifically tell people to buy tix in advance, because "tickets will sell out".

Posted by Steve | February 15, 2007 3:46 PM

it's ted leo...

even on that band's site, it says
"Next Gig
There are no forthcoming gigs at the moment "

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2007 3:48 PM

yeah the last secret show i bought tickets for on a tip from here ended up being stellastarr*...f'n sweet.

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2007 3:49 PM

As a graphic designer, I'd have to say that the odds are good that this is, indeed, a Ted Leo show.

Why does NYC always get all the awesome secret shows? Where's the love for the Left Coast?

Anyway, I'm slowly but surely growing to love this album. Bomb.Repeat.Bomb is strangely captivating to me.

Cool. I bought a ticket. Better not be that metal band!

I bought a ticket too.

@10 bucks it wasn't much of a risk, even if it does turn out to be that other band

Posted by matthew | February 15, 2007 4:18 PM

I wonder if those guys ever got a new bassist???

Guess we'll find out next Sunday.

kidding....

How much does the Mercury Lounge hold?

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2007 4:44 PM

wait, what does being a graphic designer have to do with knowing if it's ted leo or not?

Posted by david | February 15, 2007 4:47 PM

"yeah the last secret show i bought tickets for on a tip from here ended up being stellastarr*...f'n sweet."

wow, i don't know what to say. i'd have to say, BV why didn't you tell me i'd be going to see such a shit band???

Posted by ouch | February 15, 2007 4:52 PM

As an exotic dancer I'm pretty sure its not Ted Leo...anyone got a dollar?

Posted by Matt | February 15, 2007 5:16 PM

if this isn't Ted Leo, then the Sons of Cain are in for a real surprise when they realize they sold out Mercury Lounge. I just dropped $10 to see their faces. Between their astonishment and everyone else in the joint being pissed off that it's not Ted Leo, it should be a hilarious time. Well worth ten bucks.

I love Ted Leo and I hate that this album sucks.

And if anyone wants to know why, it's because Ted almost never rocks out on any of these tracks. There are some notable exceptions- most specifically the 30 seconds of ecstasy that is the breakdown in "Anunciation Day/Born on Christmas Day", which is actually one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

But seriously, when's the last time you heard Ted solo? Because he pretty much doesn't do it at all on this album, and the only reason I listen to Ted is because he rips the guitar.

being the owner of a powerboat, i think it's safe to say i know a thing or two about a surprise Ted Leo show

Stating one's credentials as a graphic designer is an in-joke that started over at Stereogum last March:

this is Guy Barnes. I am the singer from The Sons of Cain. I have no idea who Ted Leo is but he'll be hearing from our lawyers in the morning. I don't see why all of you people are trying to sabotage our 1st US show. We're an independent band and have saved our money for the past year to fly ourselves over to New York to play this show in hopes of getting a record deal. Now the room is going to be filled with people who don't know us as opposed to all the dedicated fans who have promised to come see us in New York. My cousin lives in Delaware and he is organizing a bus of 60 friends to come up specifically for the gig. But they haven't even bought their show tix yet, just paid for the bus! Now they'll all be shut out too. I'm going to try and schedule another show now, but whats to stop you bloggers from selling that out too!

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2007 6:57 PM

Guys, please don't listen to Anonymous. He's not Guy Barnes. My brothers in the band have no plans to play in New York next week.

Posted by Edna Cain | February 15, 2007 7:01 PM

The plot thickens....

Posted by Chris | February 15, 2007 7:07 PM

"Hearing from our lawyers" ... I love the mental picture of the real Sons of Cain hardly having enough money to fly to New York, but having an entire team of lawyers on retainer.

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2007 7:35 PM

Cain's son here. Longtime reader, first time writer. I'd just like to say that my father killed his brother over just these kinds of shenanigans, and we all know what happened to him. Please stop the madness.

just got an e-mail confirming it is ted leo, bought my ticket (despite being on a sunday night and having an 8:30am start time the following day).

Posted by sleepy | February 15, 2007 8:39 PM

I too love Ted Leo, but have to admit that this album is kind of weak.

He needs to add a new member to the band, or change *something*, because it's all starting to sound the same.

Can we please get another Tyranny of Distance?

Posted by andrew | February 15, 2007 9:27 PM

Yep, saw this posted over at Timorous.org:

"i just got this on an email:

"Thank you for recently purchasing tickets to the Ted Leo show at Webster Hall in May. We wanted to let you know that the band will be performing a special warm-up set at the Mercury Lounge on February 25. Tickets are $10 each and available now!""

Phew. I really didn't want to see the UK The Sons Of Cain.

Posted by Chris | February 15, 2007 9:52 PM

sold out

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2007 10:19 PM

Just got two, so keep trying (as always it seems with ticketweb).

Posted by litigioushipster | February 15, 2007 10:34 PM

Nope. Looks like it's definitely sold out now.

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2007 11:16 PM

bwahaha snatched one up. Got an email from Ticketweb saying Ted was playing a warmup show before the tour. so great.

Posted by Adam | February 16, 2007 1:03 AM

of course it's ted leo. lucky people who got tix. it will probably be a 2-hour set.

Posted by anon | February 16, 2007 2:37 AM

>>of course it's ted leo. lucky people who got tix. it will probably be a 2-hour set.

Two hours of Ted Leo? Yikes, that sounds excruciating...those eyes, that mouth, that similar sound....eek!

Thanks for the album promo. I look forward to it with antisipation as it seems to be getting some criticism already.

As a MidlanderUK I won't be going to "The Sons of Cain" at Mercury Lounge. For those of you attending I hope its not the London band.

NB: I am a graphic designer and as such I say it will rain tomorrow.

If anyone has tickets to this show, and wants to make a deal, e-mail me at sph8831@yahoo.com. I've got a pair of tickets to the Snowden/Malajube show at the merc this Sunday, and a pair of tickets to the Chin Up Chin Up/Someone Still Loves You... show this Wednesday. I also have Arcade Fire tickets, but I'm not going to part with them!

Maybe a maxwells gig will be next? Was anyone at the CBGB's benefit lounge gig? One of the better times I saw Ted Leo...

Just got this email:

Thanks,

This is the wierdest Google I`v ever known.
A mate just told me about all this and I want to set the record straight.
Unless their is by encredible coincidence another Guy Barnes in another old rock band called The Sons Of Cain then this really is me and I cant believe the hoo ha!
We only lasted a short time, our bassist went to become a hairdresser, so me and Jonny T the guitarist disbanded the group to concentrate on other things.
We were a UK band and never once discussed going to New York, hell we were still trying for the UK 1st!! and I never had dealings with Ted Leo and wish him all the luck with his record.
I now run a recording studio here in the UK, and am about to embark on a new recording and band prject with Jonny and a coupla other great guys.
If anyone IS interested on what the real Guy Barnes is doing goto www.myspace.com/guybarnessongs and anyone living in the UK, me and my new band will be playing live pretty soon.
anyway good luck to Ted and I hope this will be the end of it.
cheers
