that Prince performance was the most unexpectedly powerful and musically impactful superbowl show i've ever seen... perhaps the best sports related concert since marvin gaye sang at that NBA all-star game:

Posted by seth | February 5, 2007 3:51 AM

Fuckin' A he kicked ass. I can't imagine anyone else stepping up to the plate like that. He well and truly "Brought It".

Posted by Richard Bacchus | February 5, 2007 4:21 AM

I hate when he abbreviates his songs - "Let's Go Crazy" started out kind of flat, but things quickly picked up. The odd combination of "All Along The Watchtower" and "Best of You," though? Why??? I guess mere mortals aren't meant to understand Prince's genius? Still, the guitar work was excellent and this performance ranks among the best.

Posted by thechairguy | February 5, 2007 5:17 AM

Yeah, that "Watchtower" came out of nowhere and we were certainly impressed from our vantage point (on the couch)...

Posted by Justin | February 5, 2007 8:05 AM

he's the shreddingest shredder ever

Posted by bryan | February 5, 2007 8:33 AM

WoW! What a redeeming performance from past half time mishaps!

Prince is Prince and he did the DAMN thing. His choice of songs were on point. Only he could weather the storm as a Star that he is. The guitar playing/adjusting was fantastic.

Thank you Prince for the great show.

A bit of a wanker on the guitar I thought.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2007 9:51 AM

Best halftime show I recall ever seeing.

Posted by jerry | February 5, 2007 9:51 AM

Visually powerful, but musically - blah? Prince has much stronger material, and the sequencing could have been better. I mean "Proud Mary"? That song should have been retired with Tina Turner. And a few less masturbatory guitar solos would have been welcome. This performance was meant to(re)introduce Prince to his mid-American middle-aged audience, who will be the core audience for his soon-to-come Vegas revue.

Posted by drewo | February 5, 2007 10:14 AM

I thought it was kind of poignant that it was raining the whole time, all things considered...

And it was also pretty cool that the FAMU marching band played with him...they're awesome in their own right but it must have been a pretty unreal experience for them...

Posted by matthew | February 5, 2007 10:17 AM

Did anyone realize Prince's phallic looking silhouette when the giant sheet was deployed? And they thought Janet had a malfunction? This was a 40 foot malfunction!

Posted by jeff | February 5, 2007 10:30 AM

In case people missed Prince's press conference it is also on youtube and is really worth watching.

Posted by danfun | February 5, 2007 10:31 AM

Less guitar solos?!! Are you nuts?! The guy is a shredder and should play as many solos as he deems neccessary. The guitar solo is a lost art and a huge part of what's missing in so-called rock these days. Anyone who thinks differently can go waste their life away trying to make your hair look like your not trying to make it look that way.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2007 10:32 AM

i agree his performance was great, but that quote made me laugh so hard.

Posted by The Delay | February 5, 2007 10:56 AM

Seriously. Halftime medleyfests are always losing propositions. But when Prince is playing guitar, everyone's a winner.

Does he have a rotating set of twins?

Posted by J | February 5, 2007 10:58 AM

Prince put on a decent show(which is way up there in my half-time show ratings)...The half-time show is AlWAYS a medley of songs & half songs, so the format is flawed to begin with.
Also, ..scrap Proud Mary for some kind of James Brown tribute!--ex.Prince being led off stage with a cape only to come back dancing, rocking, a "big payback"!

Posted by Howard | February 5, 2007 11:46 AM

Prince is a straight up G! He could have completely phoned it in , due to the rain, but he nailed it. He took a solo every chance he could, rightfully so. I was blown away! And yes, he's such a genius that he knew damn well the shadow casted would look like a big crank!

Posted by brassbonanza | February 5, 2007 12:19 PM

I imagined Dave Grohl falling off his chair if he hadn't known in advance...

Posted by Mike L | February 5, 2007 12:28 PM

I thought his performance was great too, but since it was raining so hard, it got me thinking that the whole performance was being played back via CD or something. Did anyone else think this?

Posted by Fawaz | February 5, 2007 12:40 PM

OMG. Only Prince could make the Foo Fighters so soulful. They actually covered Darling Nikki as a B-side a few years ago and it wasn't bad.

Posted by SF | February 5, 2007 12:44 PM

Love Prince!!!

He's the only reason i gave myself to superbowl ratings. . .

Posted by Joshua | February 5, 2007 2:01 PM

Shit, too bad I missed this on TV. He totally kicked it. That guitar solo was not wankery, it was fucking tight and had just the right ammount of non-clean-ness, if yknawmean. Some guy at work was ragging on how bad Prince is and how much he sucked and I of course called him an idiot, but if I had seen this I would have held my ground with Prince far more sternly. Shame! Bravo Prince.

Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2007 4:00 PM

that cover of "Best of you" was awesome...he owns that song now!

Posted by safecraka | February 5, 2007 4:08 PM

it was tough to get over the 50's housewife headscarf he had on.
he looked so forced
and not enjoying himself
and the band playing looked so scattered

granted it was raining and the camera shots sucked but i found it very mediocre.

the best thing was the shadow puppet of his big purple ... guitar. props to that.

Honestly, everyone at the party I was at stopped what they were doing and we were all dead silent when Purple Rain came on. It was like we were in a trance....seriously, I almost cried just rewatching it....magical, hyponotizing, how powerful was that??? He is one of a kind. The stadium all Purple too !!! And his guitar/
phallic symbol and the stage and the's almost too much to take....I luuuvd it, what a little devil...hehehe.

Posted by Jen | February 5, 2007 4:55 PM

I guess i wasn't sure what to expect. i used to love the guy, but that was weeeh years ago. So, i thought "why prince?". But, man, he was SUPER! Everything about the show was great. The music, the colors, the rain, the darkness, the guitar, ... it was fan-tastic. Loved it.

Posted by Ellie | February 5, 2007 5:13 PM

The Foo Fighters have covered Darling Nikki many times, so I saw this as a nice return of the favor. I would think Dave a crew view it as an honor.

Posted by Odelay | February 5, 2007 5:16 PM

Prince was super duper outstanding. I find his total Hendrix mimicry (take a look at any of Jimi's live work if you've never noticed the thievery before) awesome, because he absolutely pulls it off and freakin' wails on the guitar. Thank goodness for that appearance to break-up the usual snore-fest of the Super Bowl halftime (although I recall U2's post-9/11 performance being great also).

Posted by Eggs1234 | February 5, 2007 5:20 PM

The twins have been with him for about a year now. They appeared with him when he played in Bryant Park for Good Morning America. Personally, I miss Diamond & Pearl, but things change.

Late last week, he sent a CD version of the Watchtower/Best of You medley to the Howard Stern show, but they talked over most of it.

On Friday, he released a new song called "Guitar" online at I hope the emphasis on guitar is a hint of what to expect on his next album.

Posted by thechairguy | February 5, 2007 5:50 PM

too bad he isn't given much respect for his guitar playing.

Posted by nooh | February 5, 2007 8:50 PM

The performance of "Best of You" was a good one. I hope Dave Grohl was impressed. Prince is a good guitar player with an amazing voice.

This was the best halftime show ever!! It took a Prince to bring it back! I've been a fan since 1978 and I have every single album/tape/cd he has ever released. He did the damn thang!

Thanks Prince for letting 93 million people see why you are still PRINCE!!!!

Posted by shajuanda | February 6, 2007 6:10 PM

OMG Prince is truly back!! What an awesome halftime and what an awesome prince!

Posted by Gothic Hippy | February 6, 2007 7:23 PM

Great show for the most part but for some reason he decided to drop his pants and take a dump on the Foo Fighters. Did anyone notice the woman in the white running around in the backround during one the of the songs. Freaking hilarious.

Posted by Fats | February 6, 2007 7:31 PM

Now I remember why I have admired Prince ever since I first heard Little Red Corvette. What a great entertainer this man is! The guitar playing was fantastic--reminded me somewhat of Jimi Hendrix. He was actually the reason I tuned in and his Purple Rain almost had me in tears (again). Thanks Prince for a job very well done!

Posted by arkvolunteer | February 6, 2007 9:58 PM

You either love him or you hate him, I say-what's not to love, he was awesome. Purple rain was killer.

Posted by C.F. | February 6, 2007 11:06 PM

Prince is the Greatest. His natural instinct has always been to be unpredictable and free of labels. He will always have undying support from those of us that truly listen to the music and sporadic acclaim from those that live by what gets played on the top 40 music chart. In time, I believe this Man will leave us with the most timeless and inventive body of work by a non-classical artist. Again, the half-time show only proves that Prince is one of the few artist continually evolving and inventing the way art is presented and Prince has always insisted on being responsible for his own art and how it is package.
Remember Crystal Ball and all of the other foward thinking things that he has done.

I loved the guitar solos and on behalf of all of us die-hard Prince fans I post this request to Prince-Please give us another five minute guiter anthem to die for.

God's blessings to Prince and his family forever.

AP story on reaction to the phallic silhouette:

Posted by Anonymous | February 7, 2007 4:54 AM

I thought the performance was great, but am I the only one that noticed the terrible overall mix? All I could hear was Prince's vocals and guitar. The rest of the band wasn't audible at all, except a little bleed through from his vocal mic. Why have the rest of the band there if they aren't even going to be in the mix?

Posted by Vincent Tocce | February 7, 2007 8:13 PM

Prince killed it!!! Most talented musician of our time. He looked like a king on that stage!

Posted by Class | February 8, 2007 6:11 AM

For those who complain about the so-called 50's head scarf...Its a Black Thing, something you'll never understand and its not the first time Prince has worn the suck it up!
Secondly, Prince is one of the greatest guitar players around (living or dead), some of you can't appreciate a great rock guitarist when you hear one. Simply because Prince plays all kinds of music from Rock, Funk, Blues to R&B, doesn't mean he can't be considered a Rock Guitar God- In which he is! Prince has reigned for nearly 30 years in the business and the NFL and Pepsi knew who would draw all sorts of ppl from many different walks of life and they pulled it off to some 90 million viewers. Prince's choice in songs was great, it was a variety including "Watchtower/Best Of You" which gave those rock fans the opportunity to hear something they recognized and also experienced the musical genius of Prince (totally unexpected)to do those two songs, they were fused together for a reason. Think about the state of the world today and the world going on in Iraq! Prince has his reasons for everything he does and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know understand it! Prince rocked the stadium and will forever go down in history as one of the best half time shows ever.
So STOP HATING ON THIS BLACK MAN, If it was The Chilli Peppers or Nickelback, do you honestly think we'd be here talking about it that much. HELL NO! Prince is the man and you haters can't take it. All the jokes about the scarf are idiotic...Most ppl don't understand Black folk sense of style.

amen, brother, i couldn't have said it better myself. i have been a fan for a long time now and it amazes me how many people i have to convince to be converts too--so many i have converted!--i was surrounded by nay sayers at a superbowl party--a bunch of military guys that had every negative thing to say--his height, his do rag, his music, his sexuality--and i let them all know that first of all, NO ONE, and i mean, NO ONE can do what Prince can do. whether you like rock, rap, classical, alternative, whatever your tastes are, Prince has done it all and better than the so called masters, but can they do what he does--NO!!! so stop hating! if you think YOU can do better, then do so. and if you think he's gay, think again, cause he'll take your woman and ya mama--maybe at the same time if he wants!!!

Posted by Stephanie | February 8, 2007 11:29 AM

Seriously the BEST halftime show ever! Prince is absolutely amazing. Where can i watch the halftime show??? youtube removed it!

Posted by Kelsey | February 8, 2007 3:19 PM

awesome halftime show by Prince. i remember the summer of 1984 when Prince's Purple Rain was #1 movie and number one album in the country.

Prince is the reason I watched the superbowl considering I am not a football fan. I thought his performance was superb and totally mesmerzing. I made a special trip to Vegas in January to see him perform at the Rio and he tore it up!!! The guy is super talented and knows how to entertain an audience and he's my spiritual brother! Love you Prince.....

Posted by Sandy | February 14, 2007 5:00 PM

Prince showed why he lasts. One of the few true guitar and musical talents since Jimi. I listened to Jimi in my teens. I listen to Prince in my late 50s.

Young folks may have to wait another 20 years for anything so rockin to show up at the scene.

Bangin' your head on true rock is much cooler than bangin' it in pablum!

Posted by Old Hippie | February 15, 2007 9:04 PM

Best Half time show ever.........Prince ripped it. Great song selection and performance in the rain. He has been the best for 30+ years. His guitar licks are as ggod ans Hendrix and Ernie Isley.

Hey Prince, when are you going to record an album of Hendrix remakes and do the Hendrix movie. You and Spike Lee could pull it off.

Posted by Philly Phil | February 24, 2007 10:11 PM

Posted by 1000 loan payday | March 4, 2007 7:50 PM

Absolutely Awesome Halftime Show! Many mock him, and they always will due to his musical steadfastness to give people what they need rather than what they want. His ability to be a musician, writer, producer, choreographer, performer, actor, entertainer, in every genre of music (Rock, Blues, Rap, Soul, Gospel, Country, Funk, Pop and Reggae) is unseen by any entertainer in the business ever. Keep on rocking!!!!!!! And remember, When your good your good but when your great your PRINCE!

The Show was great ...but nowhere near the Best.....

U2's Show was much better and powerful and their music is much better too....

Watch this to believe it...

This was the Best Ever.....and will remain so....

Man, I still can, in my mind clearly see the day that I was laying on a beach chair in Key Biscayne, FLA, my buddy walking up and putting some headphones on my chair and sayind, "Dude, listen to this its gonna blow you away!" In a hungover stupor I listened to the whole tape, Purple Rain, (no i-pods in 1984), and it puts a smile on my face that the cat still ROCKS like he did during the halftime show!
I dug the foo fighters mix!

Hi from the UK,

Hey, if you think that was a great show you should have seen the concert i,ve just been to at the o2 Arena in London.

'ABSOLUTELY F' AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!'

He went through tons of old and new tracks, Funk, Soul, Blues, hard rock etc, the mans a genius !

Started with 'My Guitar' The solo was blistering !! He did a great cover of Wild Cherrys 'Play That Funky Music' with everybody up dancing and grooving with an awesome solo then went straight into some Led Zep' - amazing!

What a show what a man !

Posted by Don Carman | August 24, 2007 7:26 PM

Prince was soo fantastic at half-time that I still want to view a video. Why were the videos no longer available on this web-site? Can anyone direct me where I can view the half-time show. Heck with the game - I just want to watch this guy do that thing AGAIN & AGAIN!! Thanks ANYONE who can assist me.

Posted by Patty Sayers | November 7, 2007 2:47 PM

that was probley the best halftime show ever. YES EVER. I mean i wasn't sure thru the whole thing on exactley how good it was but the ending with purple rain was amazing. and those of you who are saying the thing about the curtain coming up when he played guitaar and it looking like a penis your just immature. that man is the best guitar player we may ever see and your about to say that?? lame

Posted by Xande Macedo | February 4, 2008 12:53 AM

That's right Prince is the best. I like U2 but Prince beat them out for best performance, hands down! In the rain and with pumps on. WHAT!?! Another performer would not have been in that rain but Prince delivers!!! He cannot be touched, ever. I think the world won't realize what genius he is until he's gone. So sad.

Posted by Gisha | February 11, 2008 4:31 PM

PRINCE is sexy it doesn't matter if he would have just stood there and said hello , He'll always have my attention!!!!!

Posted by notforyou2know | April 2, 2008 4:27 PM

Prince played music that was ancient 20 years ago. He was fine, as these things go, but unmemorable. U2, on the other hand, delivered an unforgettable post 9-11 tribute, with stirring and powerful music from this millennium combined with unbelievable imagery and symbolism. Prince = fun '80s era novelty act who hasn't been relevant since the Reagan Administration. U2 = most important band of the 80s, 90s and 00s.

Posted by Argyle Socks | December 30, 2009 11:47 PM

It's been several years now and I still keep listening to Prince's performance. Easily the best half time show ever and, frankly, one of the most potent performances I've ever seen in any format. It's inspiring for me to watch. Incredible art.

Posted by Casey | March 2, 2013 11:38 PM

U2 is garbage. Edge's guitar is all effects. Bono is a pompous ass. They create lack luster music that makes older suburban dwellers feel they are hip and keeps them in the now. If I meet Bono I'd kick him in the nads and wouldn't care that I'd probably spend the night in jail. It'd be worth it just to say I kicked him in the nuts!

Posted by Besus | December 15, 2013 9:57 AM

Prince is king and the best guitarist/musician live performer today + the best half tme show.

what is the better of course .. Another half time show with 3erdEyeGirl to be the dominant of all times ahead....Prince is just out of this world he comes from the future to bring music like Mozart he is not a musician but a philosopher in music to teach generations how real music is created. He is a living legacy ...god bless him
