webster hall sucks!
Posted by websucks | February 21, 2007 12:41 PM
hey, anyone figure out who is playing the PASTE secret show at knitting factory tomorrow?

The whole "webster hall sucks" thing is overblown in the extreme. It's a cool old room with great visual character. The sight lines to the stage are good. And the sound is often good to great. the only drawbacks as I see it are the security, who you just have to ignore (after you enter, why care?) and that it's a big enough room that people in the back chat. enough people bitch about webster that "WH sucks" became conventional wisdom even though it's wrong. The emporer wears no clothes!

I think they play the music at Webster Hall to loud, and it is hard to enjoy a concert at that volume.

Michael you're wrong. People chat way too much everywhere, drinks are a hassle to get and cost way too much, most of the crowds are composed of rude jerks on the tall side, and the sound tends to be decent at best. As for "great visual character", I don't know how on earth that tacky motif should factor into anything... it isn't distracting, but it certainly isn't pretty.
Now, the WH sucks thing is pretty bandwagon, but it is true. If you think otherwise, it must be because you've been having poor experiences elsewhere too.

well if we all recall just a few years ago, shows like the one above would be at bowey ballroom- a much better venue without a cheesy dance club attached.
ever try to get a drink at webster hall- there are those 2 dippy slow girls to the side. one takes the money, the other takes 4 songs to pour your drinks.
then there is athe bathrrom - try walking through 3 clubs to get to a bathroom that you are sharing with 3 other levels of clubs.
bogus
and the shows are even a little more expensive than bowery
oh, yeah then there's the bait and switch.
they will NOT give you a refund if you buy a ticket for bowery and the show is moved o Webster- which happens more often then you think.

What a bunch of whiners. "rude jerks on the tall side" are you kidding - complaining about patrons being tall? If people are talking tell them to shut the f* up. You would have never survived a show at the old Ritz - they used to pack them to twice capacity and the shows always went on at least 2 hours late. Webster is like a walk in the park.

i agree with michael that i have tended to like webster hall shows, although the porno club feel will always make it pale by comparison with bowery ballroom. but he's right that i think people in the back talk in webster hall and i (being at the front) never notice unless i turn around to look into the back. it allows for all kinds.
the only thing i personally don't like is when i wonder if the floor in webster is going to give way.

"El Es Gay" is a really good jam.

why should new york have to put up with such a shit venue?
sometimes a band comes through town and ONLY plays webster
not my thang.
sorry if i am a whiner

"shows like the one above would be at bowey ballroom"
Yo La Tengo always played bigger venues like Irving Plaza (Maxwells doesn't count).
Webster Hall is just too damn hot. Winter/summer, doesn't matter, the mgmt always cranks up the heat.

Webster Hall is definitely in the tops of the worst "cool bands" venues in NYC. It simply is unpleasant to watch and hear a band there when it's filled. If they could in a perfect world (yep I'm dreaming!) subtract 200 people minimum from their sold-out shows, it'd be a major improvement.

i've heard that it will be son volt.

hopefully, when the "Music Hall of Williamsburg" opens, bands will play one night there and one night at Bowery Ballroom instead of a Webster show.

neko case is playing the secret paste show at the knitting factory tonight

why cant they be 16+

For all the audiophiles who discredit the sound at Webster Hall.
1 Word: Mogwai
The best sounding show I've ever heard.
So fuck you, you spoiled NYU piles of deridels!

Anyone has an extra ticket for the Webster Hall show? I need one.

I saw my first Yo La Tengo concert last night.
The venue was Webster Hall in NYC.
Absolutely fantastic!
Now, I'm an old-line deadhead and classic rock n roller, rythmn and blues guy, but my young Irish lassie turned me on to her favorite band. First thing i thought was, what kinda name is that. The albums she played for me sounded cool - but for my taste just not enough lead guitar jamming.
Live, however, on my god, or as you kids say these days OMG! After the one-trick pony, Oneida warm up band (i did enjoy a couple of their tunes, including the heavy metalish one), Yo La Tengo started with a mellow tune with Georgia on keyboards - so i though ok with a lot of head bashing for an hour by Oneida, now we'll get a mellow YLT show.
But no, Ira just was not afraid and he kicked ass - the guitar jamming was outstanding - and so was his piano bashing. Truly the art of noise. it wasn't just the finger work on the frets (or keys), but the hand work (karate chopping the neck (and keyboard) and even the foot work on the pedals (and believe it or not the keyboard too).
straight ahead lead riffs and distortion. real creativity.
Parts reminded me of Velvet Underground, Neil Young, Pink Floyd - but with all the influences it is really 100% Yo La Tengo.
Now I'm hooked.
I collect concert posters - most of what i got are from an earlier era of music - the 60s/70s psychedelic scene. wish there was a YLT Webster Hall poster, but i hear the poster for their Cleveland show was really cool - anyone know where I can find one?
