11 Swedish bands (who happen to be playing SXSW)

by Avi Roig

Avi Roig is a Scandinavian music expert. In fact it's all he writes about on his website It'a a Trap. He even puts out records too. Below he talks about eleven Swedish artists that are visiting the U.S. this month to play SXSW and elsewhere.

Sweden

---

DOWNLOAD: Marit Bergman - No Party (MP3)

SwedenConsensus has it that Marit Bergman's latest album "I think it's a rainbow" is very mediocre and sadly, I'm inclined to agree. Don't let that daunt you though - she's got another two solid solo records under her belt and, despite any criticism, is one super-talented lady. Listen to "Rainbow"'s lead single "No party" for proof.

And who could forget the greatness of "Adios amigos"?

---

DOWNLOAD: Ane Brun - To Let Myself Go (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Ane Brun & Teitur - Rubber and Soul (MP3)

SwedenI'm kinda ambivilent about Ane Brun's first two records, but "Duets" is superb and her new live record ain't bad either. As for Teitur (from Denmark), I can't say that his solo work made much an impression on me, but I really like his voice. Now, howabout Ane and Teitur together? Beautiful.

DOWNLOAD: David & The Citizens - The End (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: David & The Citizens - Absent mind (MP3)

SwedenDavid is pissed at me for reporting on widespread rumors relating to the fact that his entire backing band recently quit on him. Dude, if it's not true why not come out and deny it? And even if it is, who the fuck cares? People will still respect you if you say you love your girlfriend more than your ex-bandmates.

DOWNLOAD: The Faintest Ideas - Nosebleeders on the tracks (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: The Faintest Ideas - You're Beautiful (MP3)

SwedenSpastic twee that may remind you of the Buzzcocks, more than the usual C86 crowd - The Faintest Ideas.

ALERT: The Faintest Ideas play NYC TONIGHT (March 9) and Cake Shop Tuesday (March 12)

---

DOWNLOAD: Tobias Froberg - When The NIght Turns Cold (MP3)

SwedenMaybe skip the showcase and follow Tobias Froberg around on the street?

---

DOWNLOAD: Frida Hyvönen - You Never Got Me Right (MP3)

SwedenI find Frida Hyvönen's music wholly unremarkable, but many folks whose taste and opinion I respect would strongly disagree.

DOWNLOAD: Johnossi - Man Must Dance (MP3)

SwedenSure, Meg White's feeble drumming is a big part of the White Stripe's sound, but imagine what they'd be like if she was good? Enter Johnossi. These guys sure make quite a ruckus for just two people, especially considering that frontman John Engelbert plays an acoustic guitar.

SwedenThe Swedish electro scene is overcrowded, but Lo-Fi-Fnk stands out. In the right venue with the right crowd, I bet it goes off.

DOWNLOAD: Loney, Dear - I Am John (MP3)

SwedenBefore he signed to SubPop, Loney, Dear mainman Emil Svandngen spent many years burning his own CDRs, booking his own shows and doing everything the hard way. More than just good music, this is proof that hard work and perseverence pays off.

LISTEN: Mando Diao @ MySpace

SwedenI pick on these guys a lot. Whether it's for their reputation as Sweden's biggest band of assholes, their sophomore slump epitomizing album "Hurricane bar" or whatever else I can come up with, I will admit that the new record "Ode to ochrasy" is fairly decent. However, I must warn you: seeing Mando Diao live may be hazardous to your health.

ALERT: Playing Bowery Ballroom on May 14th.

---

DOWNLOAD: Peter Bjorn & John - I don't know what I want us to do (MP3)

SwedenYou don't need me to tell you that this is one of the year's biggest must-see acts. I've been a fan from the very beginning so it's incredibly gratifying to see Peter, Bjorn and John finally getting the attention they deserve.

OOIOO (Japan) - 2007 Tour Dates

OOIOO

Sufjan Steven's nomination of OOIOO reminded me I had some tour dates to post. The Japanese group will be at Knitting Factory in NYC on March 20th. All dates below...

OOIOO - 2007 Tour Dates
Tue Mar 20 New York, NY - Knitting Factory w/ I.U.D. (Liz from Gang Gang Dance)
Wed Mar 21 Chicago, IL - Empty Bottle w/ Lichens
Fri Mar 23 Seattle, WA - Chop Suey w/ Eyvind Kang
Sat Mar 24 Portland, OR - Doug Fir Lounge
Mon Mar 26 San Francisco, CA - The Independent w/ Neung Phak
Tue Mar 27 Los Angeles, CA - Echo w/ Neung Phak

Press release:

Hot on the heels of their latest record of hard-hitting polyrhythmic skree, TAIGA, OOIOO have unleashed fellow sonic cohort EYÉà from Boredoms to dismember and reassemble two of their songs. "UMO" and "UMA" get the remix treatment here - both OOIOO's takes on "SECONDO CORO DELLE LAVANDAIE" from the Roberto De Simone Italian folk opera, La Gatta Cenerentola (Cinderella the Cat), from the 1970's.

La Gatta Cenerentola was based on the Cinderella story and voiced in the Neopolitan dialiect, originally a Neopolitan folk tale before it was re-written by a Frenchman. "UMO" and "UMA" mantain the Neopolitan language and lyrics, but the tribal rhythyms of the orignal and OOIOO's versions are replaced here with EYÉà's synth bass, resulting in two long tracks that reinvent Yoshimi's jet-propelled psychedelic pep rallies as bass-driven dancefloor slammers.

As EYÉà has shown us on recent Boredoms records, he has an uncanny knack for harnessing a groove and blowing it up to a previously unknown scale, and thats exactly what he does here. EYÉà also designed the artwork for this release.

Seriously kids, if Pela doesn't become one of the defining bands for New York rock in the next year following the release of their first full-length CD, then there is no justice in this world. Due East at 3rd Ward, The Rub will be hosting The RAVE. Alongside the Rub, special guest Sinden will be dropping his signature breaky, hip hop influenced house to warehouse full of mad ravers. It was also just announced that there will be a room with live bands including Benzos and my personal favorites, The Glass.

(Sinden works with Switch quite a bit and has an excellent radio show on London's KISS FM. Sinden tracks and links here.)

All three parties are unmissable: make the rounds.

Gramercy Theatre (concert venue) review - no heat?

Gramercy TheatreScatter o' Light went to the rescheduled stellastarr* show last night (March 7, 2007). It was rescheduled because the new NYC music venue wasn't ready to open on the original date. Here's part of their review:

saw stellastarr* at the gramercy theatre last night. this place used to be a movie theatre until live nation tore it up and turned it into a music venue. last night was its first night open. and you could tell. (unfinished, wooden steps and wooden doors leading to the ladies room. um, and NO HEAT.) people were wearing their coats and hats the whole show. but cold is better than hot (sometimes).

gramercy's floor space is similar in size to bowery, but more open and there is unreserved theatre style seating right behind the floor. i think it holds about 600 total. there are 2 bars on the floor and one in the basement.

Upcoming shows at the theatre include Birdmonster, Mika, Macy Gray, La Coka Nostra, Rasputina, Teddybears, Charlie Louvin, Henry Rollins spoken word, Amon Tobin, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Pretty Girls Make Graves.

Beach House @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - pics

Seeing Beach House open for Grizzly Bear at Bowery Ballroom gave me a new appreciation for the Mazzy Star-esque Baltimore duo. Mazzy Star is one of my favorite bands of all time, so it was good to feel something similar again when Beach House's Victoria Legrand sang - and she can sing, reverb or not. Other comparisons people like to use are Galaxie 500, Spiritualized, and Slowdive. Though apprehensive at first, I loved them in the end.

CMJ not in Lincoln Center anymore - 2007 dates

Puck

I couldn't be happier that I won't have to trek up to Lincoln Center anymore if I want to partake in any official CMJ activities...

CMJ Network Inc. today announced the dates of the 27th annual CMJ Music Marathon, Tuesday, October 16 - Saturday, October 20 in New York City.

For the first time in over a decade, CMJ's daytime events will be headquartered in downtown Manhattan at the world famous Puck Building and multiple venues at New York University. At night, CMJ Music Marathon will once again take over 50 premier clubs and music venues throughout New York City, featuring performances from the best new artists from the worlds of alternative, rock, electronica, hip-hop, metal, Americana, world, jazz and so much more.

Badges are now on sale. Bands can start applying. More info below...

"We are thrilled to celebrate CMJ's move back to downtown Manhattan - the cradle and nexus of new music - and to be working with NYU and the dozens of legendary venues that have been CMJ partners for years. We were proud that so many called 2006 our best CMJ ever - and we're going to bring an even better festival to music lovers in 2007," said CMJ Founder and Executive Producer Joanne Abbot Green,

CMJ Music Marathon has featured many of the world's most influential and revolutionary musicians, artists, cultural, and political figures at a variety of events including presentations, screenings, Q sessions, panel discussions and, of course, over 1000 live music performances. CMJ 2007 continues that tradition, highlighting the best new music first. It's virtually assured that many of 2008's breakout bands will be playing somewhere in New York City during CMJ 2007.

CMJ Music Marathon is the largest event of its kind, drawing over 12,000 professionals from all sectors of the music business and over 100,000 music fans, all of whom converge on New York to discover the world's best new music. CMJ has always been a springboard for the best new music talent from multiple music genres, discovering music's future superstars years before their commercial breakthroughs including marquee artists like The Shins ('06) and Motion City Soundtrack ('05), The Arcade Fire ('04), The Killers ('03), Modest Mouse ('98), Eminem ('98), Black Eyed Peas ('97), Wilco ('96), Green Day ('94), Queen Latifah ('90), The Beastie Boys ('85), U2 ('85), Red Hot Chili Peppers ('84), and R.E.M. ('83).

During the day, CMJ Music Marathon hosts four days of nonstop events including panels, keynote speeches, film premieres, a Continuing Legal Education symposium, mentoring sessions, tutorials and a sizzling, interactive lifestyle area. Registration to CMJ Music Marathon grants attendees entry to all daytime and nighttime offerings.

CMJ is proud to welcome New York University as a sponsor of daytime programming through its Steinhardt Music Business Program in the Department of Music Performing Arts Professions and the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music in the Tisch School of the Arts.

"There has never been a more critical time for the music industry, and positioning CMJ with a groundbreaking academic institution like NYU will allow for the perfect environment to present the best entertainment, networking and educational opportunities for musicians, students, music fans and industry professionals," said Abbot Green.

In addition to the downtown daytime events and nighttime live music showcases at venues throughout NYC and the boroughs, CMJ will once again offer its attendees the best in new and innovative films. CMJ FilmFest has become a leading movie tastemaker, hosting over a decade of premieres and advance screenings from 1994's "Pulp Fiction," to 2006's "Borat." In 2006, CMJ FilmFest screened Academy Award nominated and victorious films, including the New York premiere of "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," which featured an appearance by Sacha Baron Cohen and the world premiere of "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" featuring an discussion with Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher. Previous FilmFests have featured appearances by leading filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino, Michael Moore, Mike Mills, David Cronenberg, Harmony Korine, Wim Wenders, Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Vince Vaughn, among others.

Registration is open NOW at www.cmj.com/marathon , with EXTREME EARLY BIRD prices available. Band/Artist Showcase submissions are being accepted NOW at www.cmj.com/marathon with discount application prices as well. Potential panelists and speakers should contact the panels department at panels07@cmj.com.

Grizzly Bear @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC (March 07) - pics

I already thought Grizzly Bear were an awesome band to see live. Last night (March 6, 2007) at Bowery Ballroom they proved they've been practicing (aka were just on tour for 3 weeks), and they were even better than I thought - definitely the best show I've seen by them yet. Highlights included pretty much everything, but I especially loved "Colorado" this time, and it was cool that they did a 1-song 2-man encore since they usually never come back on stage. Tiye writes...

Last night I finally got to see Grizzly Bear play at Bowery Ballroom and it was worth the wait. I can't even...there are no words...I'll think of some. After the show, Sarah and I saw Michael Tapper sitting alone at the bar in a daze. He told us that he was trying to process what he just saw and that we could quote him when he said, "Grizzly Bear is the best band in the world".
Here are some pics...

Lily Allen (+Karl Lagerfeld & vs Lady Sovereign) 2007 Tour Dates

Lily & Karl Lagerfeld, Paris Fashion Week - March 2, 2007
Lily Allen and Karl Lagerfeld

(Karl gets around)

Lily Allen wrote on February 22nd...

Dear Lady Sovereign

In response to Miss sovereigns comments , I've spoken to my Dad and he says he'd be happy to adopt you if you think it will give you a leg up .

The 21-year-old rapper - who is enjoying chart success in the US - thinks it is unfair she is attacked in Britain for her sense of style, while Lily is lauded for her quirky dress sense.
Lady Sovereign told the Observer Music Monthly magazine: 'I'm not appreciated. You get some of the media hating people like me 'cause they're chavish but Lily is the biggest chav going and everyone seems to love her.' The 'Public Warning' singer insists she doesn't hate Lily, but thinks she has had it easy, because she is the daughter of successful comic actor Keith Allen.
She added: 'I'm not hating on her but someone like Lily Allen, just 'cause her dad's famous, doesn't have to work as hard as someone like me.' The Wembley-born MC also claims her next album is going to be so controversial, her record label Def Jam will 's**t themselves'.
The rapper - who can count Nas and LL Cool J as her label mates - said: 'If they think my current album is irregular the next one's going to be pretty f**ked up. I've got so many things to say. They're going to s**t themselves.'

DOWNLOAD: Lavender Diamond - You Broke My Heart (MP3)

"Primarily a vehicle for the astonishing vocals and buoyant worldview of Becky Stark, the Los Angeles-based Lavender Diamond's take on the dying art of the perfect pop song is as elemental as it is ambitious — though their forthcoming Matador full-length, Imagine Our Love (due the eighth of May), is more of the latter."

Eleven bands from Montreal (that happen to be playing SXSW)

I asked Montreal resident "BrooklynVegan Mike" if he could give is a quick preview of some of the bands from Montreal that are traveling to Austin for SXSW this year. Here's what he came up with....

Montreal

Montreal has created an environment of great, imaginative music. We have our own indie music showcase and outdoor music festival, and are the artistic capital of Canada (despite what Toronto might tell you). Faster then you can say poutine, the city has erupted on to the indie stage with a flurry of good bands. Many of them (along with all of indie-dom) are descending to Austin for South by Southwest. We all know the big names, so I've been asked to comment on some of the lesser known bands being produced by my corner of the great white north. Here is a rundown of a few of the (unsung) Montreal bands worth checking out at SXSW.

DOWNLOAD: Patrick Watson - Luscious Life (MP3)

MontrealPatrick Watson has been plugging along for a few years, releasing their brand of soft, electronically subtle folk. Vocally sounds like the love child of Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley and makes no effort to hide it. Of all the Montreal bands playing SXSW this year, they have the biggest chance at the dreaded "crossover" appeal. He could become your mom's favorite artist (has been featured a couple times on "Grey's Anatomy"). Fall in love now before it gets played out everywhere.

DOWNLOAD: Miracle Fortress - This Thing About You (MP3)

MontrealSpearheaded by Graham Van Pelt of Think About Life, Miracle Fortress is a departure from the keyboard party punk of his "day job," but not by as much as you would think. It's a more spaced-out affair, with Van Pelt exploring the sounds he creates with a psych-pop bent and a healthy dose of delay. If Think About Life is the ecstasy rush, Miracle Fortress is the comedown.

DOWNLOAD: Land of Talk - Speak to Me Bones (MP3)

MontrealA sign you are unheralded in your own hometown; when the local culture press anoints you next big thing status AFTER the national media does. Such is the cross Land of Talk has to bear. At Osheaga they stole fans from the Bell Orchestre set - no small feat (Arcade Fire are GODS here). A power-trio that merges early Cat Power with Sonic Youth in a straight forward style, just don't tell them that. They should have a full album later this year, but Boo Hiss Cheer Applause is a great introduction. We've talked a lot about them here, so you should be familiar with them by now. If you haven't, what's wrong with you?

DOWNLOAD: Creature - Pop Culture (MP3)

Montreal
Montreal dance-punk at its finest. Long before The Arcade Fire and The Stills came out of here, Montreal had a well known DJ/House scene. Creature bridges the gap between those two genres. They get better with every beer.

---

DOWNLOAD: We Are Wolves - La Nature (MP3)

MontrealWe are Wolves' myspace photo shows a dizzying array of keyboards. I believe that summarizes them quite nicely. They remind me a lot of Add (N) to X, but with a more aggressive, dancey flavor like DFA79. They played a fantastic set on the Osheaga second stage this past summer. You will sweat, a lot.

DOWNLOAD: Pawa Up First - Detour (MP3)

MontrealOrginally the home recordings of local artist Serge Pelletier, the fleshed out band Pawa Up First shoots you back to 1995 when Trip-Hop ruled and Brighton was the chillest place on Earth. An amalgam of Gainsbourg, salsa, and hip-hop beats, they are one of the more dynamic bands from Montreal in quite a while.

---

LISTEN: Plaster @ MySpace

MontrealA really fun, inventive electronic trio with a big underground following in the city. For as enticing as their album is, Plaster's live show is supposed to be a spectacle unto itself - always a tough ticket when they are playing. Check out their site just to mess around and deconstruct their tracks. Making their way to a car commercial near you.

---

LISTEN: Krista L.L. Muir @ MySpace

MontrealThe former "Lederhosen Lucil", her music incorporates sparse ukulele with her chilling vocals multitracked, creating a warm, but unsettling atmosphere. Peep the track "Libra Encore" for the best example of this. I have never Krista L.L. Muir live but would be curious to see if she can pull off the feeling her recordings elicit.

---

DOWNLOAD: Malajube - Etienne D'Aout (MP3)

MontrealMalajube are finally making some noise in the U.S. after being the hottest band in Montreal for some time. Like Land of Talk, you've heard plenty about them around here.

DOWNLOAD: Call Me Poupee - Singapore Slang (MP3)

MontrealWith a sound that recalls early Blonde Redhead (including vocals, which channel Kazu Makino) through a spaghetti western prism...Call Me Poupee . There is a kitsch factor that might hinder them from garnering mass appeal, but the record is fantastic and their Osheaga performance showed they can handle a large audience. For fans of Ennio Morricone, spy records, and the first Goldfrapp record.

---

DOWNLOAD: Les Breastfeeders - Tout va pour le mieux dans le pire des mondes (MP3)

MontrealWell dressed group making garage-inflected power pop, Les Breastfeeders are part of a growing number of French-language Montreal bands that are making a name outside of the city. Imagine The Banana Splits covering The Kinks.

The band will add a second show at the Black Cat on April 27, one night before the show that just sold out in a matter of seconds. The news was confirmed by Plan frontman Travis Morrison, our co-worker who sits just a floor below Guru headquarters. Bright Eyes @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - March 2, 2007 (CRED)
Bright Eyes @ Bowery Ballroom

Bright Eyes played two shows at Bowery Ballroom in NYC this weekend - I was at the 2nd one on Saturdy March 3rd. I couldn't have been more excited that M Ward joined Conor on stage for something-like nine songs, but I also have to admit that the show was way better when it was just Bright Eyes & band - they seemed tighter and more-rehearsed. The worst was when Conor sang on one or two of M (Matt)'s songs - Matt just sings them so much better. That said, the show was great - especially because of the kick-ass fiddle and trumpet parts - there were lots of them. I was told they played every song off the new Bright Eyes EP (MP3s above).

Aziz asks...

Do you want to be in a short on Human Giant's MTV show?

Do you want to watch the Illusionators perform their most dangerous magification ever?!!

Then show up at the UCB Theatre in NY (26th btw 8th and 9th) at 9:30 pm on Monday and the Illusionators, John Satan and Scott Devil, will lead you to a world of illusion and death!

Afterwards, we will take you back to Crash Test, where your seats will be saved,
but your lives will not!!!!

Crash Test

(Show up at 9:30 pm to be in the new Illusionators stunt)
Human Giant with special guests Eugene Mirman, and AD Miles

We will also sneak preview more new clips from the show.

I am beyond happy to report Aziz and co. have finished most of the shooting for The Human Giant and that they're back in NYC for edits, test screenings, and all that good stuff. Being back in NYC means we can also look forward to Aziz's signature UCB show Crash Test. They already have four shows scheduled at UCB - that includes the one Aziz talks about above. Check out a new Human Giant clip (first previewed at UCB last Monday) below these....

....UPCOMING SHOWS!

  • 3/5/07, 11:00pm UCB Theater: Crash Test w/ Aziz Ansari & Human Giant will show video previews from their upcoming MTV show, and Eugene Mirman & AD Miles are confirmed to appear.
  • 3/7/07, 8:30pm Rififi: Invite Them Up: If all goes according to plan, this will be the first Invite Them Up in the newly renovated Rififi..

Human Giant clip, David Cross, Sarah Silverman, and MORE - BELOW....

WATCH DAVID CROSS ON Drinks w/ LX!
* probably the most interesting DC interview I've seen in a while....

In the interview, David mentions how he is slowly trying to get back into stand-up but that, at the moment, he kinda sucks, his material isn't honed, and that it's going to be lame for the next few months. I hate to admit it, but he's right. I caught the final Hot Tub Variety Show at Comix featuring Eugene Mirman and David Cross and Eugene was easily the highlight of the evening. He killed! David's bits, though truly still funny, meandered a bit too much and it felt sort of convoluted. It is killing me to say that, but it just didn't feel strong or focused.

You can also catch David in the comedy tent at this years Bonnaroo with Lewis Black and Dave Attell. Unable to catch Bonaroo? Then try to see him at one of his other upcoming gigs.

OTHER INTERVIEWS

MORE NEWS

Sarah SilvermanThe Sarah Silverman Program has been picked up for 14 more episodes. Yes! Sarah is also hosting BOTH NIGHTS of the Sasquatch! Music Festival. Check out the cheese joke she performed on the Independent Spirit Awards last week.

I am so happy to announce that The Sound of Young America is movin' on up. Waaaaayyyy up. The Sound of Young America premired on WNYC-FM on Sunday March 4th at 6:00pm. WNYC is one of the nation's biggest public radio stations and I couldn't be happier that The Sound of Young America is getting a broadcast of this calibur.

Tom Scharpling and his program The Best Show on WFMU continue to play a crucial role in maintaining what I consider the essential and unavoidable relationship between rock and comedy. Why, just look at his programs from the past few weeks. On 1/2/07 he had Paul F. Tompkins on the show. Then on 2/6/07 he had comedy duo Time and Eric on the show. THEN just the other day on 2/13/07 he had Zach Galifianakis on the program.

Speaking of Tom Scharpling, the 4th volume of the incredible Best of Scharpling & Wurster will be coming out in April. Entitled The Art of the Slap, this three disc set will be released on Stereolaffs Records. More info HERE and HERE.

One of my favorite recurring things published on The Apiary is a series called From Behind the Bar at UCB. I find it really interesting to read the ruminations of one of the bartenders at one of NYC's premier comedy venues. Anyhow, the piece is written by NYC based writer/performer Margot Leitman whom incidentally, can be seen on 2/15 at Mo Pitkins as she co-hosts Stripped Stories with Giulia Rozzi

Did you miss the 2/8/07 installment of A Muthaf*ckin' Evening with Fabrice Fabrice. You missed a doozie. Luckily for you, Anya Garrett took some phenominal (and very representative) pictures at the show.

The Daily Show

For a pretty long time, The Daily Show stopped taking reservations for upcoming shows. I happened to be on the Daily Show Comedy Central page recently and noticed that they have a new (how new, I do not know) reservation system set-up that allows you to choose the day you want to see the show. Before it was more of a lottery where you sent in your name and availability and waited for your number to come up. Unfortunately, a lot of these dates already seem booked up and it takes a lot of trial and error in finding dates with vacancies. Anyhow, here's the reservation system. Good luck, Commie!

The Colbert Report is not taking reservations.

Rififi will remain closed through March 1st, according to their website. Looks like their comedy shows will be back on track this week

Christopher Guest known for films Best In Show, Waiting For Guffman, Spinal Tap, and For Your Consideration is working on a pilot for ABC.

I love Chelsea Peretti's blog

Wolfgang's Vault suing Sony BMG & Warner!

Hendrix pin

Wolfgang fights back:

'Far from being about bootlegging, consumer confusion or infringement of any sort, this case is actually a blatant attempt by two of the largest record labels in the world -- using artists as a front -- to secure new income streams and destroy a legitimate business,' the suit says.

It also alleges that the two record companies unsuccessfully sought to negotiate licenses to the concert footage, and when that was not possible, "conspired with each other to concoct fictitious legal claims in an effort to appropriate for themselves the use of musical recordings through an abuse of this judicial process." Diplo & Bonde Do Role - 2007 Tour Dates

Bonde Do Role in London, Feb 2007 (CRED)
Bonde Do Role in London

Back in July Diplo introduced us to the two new hottest hipster dance rock groups from Brazil - CSS and Bonde Do Role. Since then we've heard plenty from Sub Pop's CSS, but (relatively speaking) not so much from Diplo's Bonde Do Role. That could have something to do with the fact that CSS put on a better live show which in turn makes them more in-demand, or maybe it was Bonde Do Role's lack of a major-indie label (assuming they were just signed to a minor-indie). That of course changed when at the end of January it was announced that Bonde Do Role can now call Franz Ferdinand, The Arctic Monkeys, Archie Bronson Outfit, and Adem their label-mates - because Bonde Do Role signed to Domino Records.

Next week they return to the States. Tickets are still on sale for their March 30th show with Diplo at Studio B in Brooklyn, and they're playing at least four shows at SXSW. All dates below...
