SOOOO @ Southpaw, Brooklyn, NYC - March 9, 2007 (CRED & REVIEW)
Shout Out Out Out Out @ Southpaw

If you didn't catch Shout Out Out Out Out when they were in NYC last week, you have a few more chances to get down the sound if you head to SXSW.

Shout Out Out Out Out is a 6 piece rock band that plays funky dance music. I had the pleasure of catching the boys during CMJ and was completely blown way by their enthusiasm to rock the party and get asses shaking. Be prepared for lots of vocoder and mandated dancing.

Friday Mar 16: Impose Party Speakeasy (412 Congress) 5.20PM

7 bands from Denmark (who happen to be playing SXSW)

This is part three in a Scandinavian music series....

by Avi Roig

Denmark

---

DOWNLOAD: Funky Nashville - Hitch A Ride (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Funky Nashville - Gone away (MP3)

DenmarkFunky Nashville's music is so completely misguided and awful, they might actually be worth seeing. The name alone should be enough to give you an idea of what they're about, but I'm happy to provide an mp3 (above) as further evidence.

---

DOWNLOAD: Under Byen - Siamesisk (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Under Byen - Af samme stof som stof (MP3)

Under Byen @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - March 6, 2007 (CRED)
Under Byen @ Bowery Ballroom

Of all the bands on this list, Under Byen is by far the most unique and Scandinavian sounding. Miss this one and prepare to be ridiculed for the rest of the year by everyone who was smart enough to attend.

LISTEN: Junior Senior @ MySpace

DenmarkDo you like fun? C'mon, Junior Senior should be a no-brainer.

---

DOWNLOAD: The Kissaway Trail - Smother + Evil = Hurt (MP3)

DenmarkThe Kissaway Trail is incredibly promising. Nobody does epic melancholy pop like the Scandinavians.

---

DOWNLOAD: Lack - Primo Levi (MP3)

DenmarkThey used to sound like Refused, but have since refined their sound to be one of the best forward-thinking, melodic post-hardcore bands on the planet. VERY recommended. It's just too bad Lack cancelled their scheduled SXSW appearance.

---

LISTEN Mew @ MySpace

DenmarkAnother no-brainer, especially considering Mew is playing a Brooklyn Vegan-sponsored party.

7 bands from Finland (who happen to be playing SXSW)

Last month I wrote a post about bands from Finland visiting the U.S.A. this month. That included a show at Sin-e Sunday night, and one at Knitting Factory that happened last night. Did anyone go to either of them?

In the article below, It's a Trap's Avi Roig discusses many of the same Finnish bands. One notable addition is FUN who are here, not only to play some shows, but to record with the one-and-only Steve Albini in his Chicago studio. On March 23rd FUN joins the cast of Marissa Nadler, Tim Fite, Shy Child, and Pela at a Brooklyn Vegan-sponsored show at Sin-e in NYC (tickets still on sale). And now, Avi....

FUN @ New Granada, Minneapolis, MN - Mar 5, 2007 (CRED)
Fun in Minneapolis

DOWNLOAD: Fun - Big Lies (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Fun - Arizona spit trip (MP3)

Okay, I'm cheating a little on this one as they're not appearing at any 'official' SXSW events, but that doesn't matter. FUN sound like Rapeman and are coming to the US to record their new album at Electrical Audio in Chicago with Steve Albini and this might be the only chance America gets to see them live. Another band that appeared on my first "Reader's companion" compilation.

---

DOWNLOAD: I Walk The Line - When I'm Gone (MP3)

FinlandFor some folks, all you need to know is that I Walk The Line are Gearhead's latest signing. For everyone else, just imagine Social Distortion with organ and you'll have a good idea of what they're about.

---

DOWNLOAD: Callisto - Wormwood (MP3)

FinlandCallisto are one of the better Neuriscan-type (that's a reference to the trinity of Neurosis/Isis/Pelican, mind you) bands out there right now, which should come as no surprise considering Finland's strong doom heritage.

---

LISTEN: Disco Ensemble @ MySpace

FinlandFinland's leading mallpunk/mainstreamo act. Despite my distaste for this sort of stuff, I grudgingly admit that Disco Ensemble have a few good songs and will probably put on a good show.

---

DOWNLOAD: 22-Pistepirkko - Rat king
DOWNLOAD: 22-Pistepirkko - I Knew (MP3)

FinlandFinland's leading weirdo pop/garage/surf trio. Over 25 years later and still going strong! 22-Pistepirkko

---

DOWNLOAD: KTU (Pohjonen, Gunn, Mastelotto) - Absinth (MP3)

FinlandTwo King Crimson members team up with Finland's finest accordian player to... well, I have no idea what it'll sound like, but I doubt it will be boring.

---

DOWNLOAD: Astrid Swan - Rock 'n' Roll Blonde (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Treeball - Ambulance (MP3) <--- don't skip it

FinlandI'm not crazy about Astrid Swan's solo record "Poverina" which Minty Fresh licensed for a North American release, but her work with Treeball (Finland's New Pornographers?) is excellent. Lots of free downloads at their site.

Club Europa in Brooklyn

Club Europa
Club Europa

Like Studio B and Warsaw, Club Europa is a Polish nightclub cashing in on the demand for (indie) rock shows in the now-hip sections of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NYC.

"Europa a new venue located in the thriving "it" neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn (a mere 3 blocks from McCarren Pool and 4 blocks from Warsaw). The 550 capacity space can host shows for audiences 16 & up and features mind blowing sound, lighting and artist’s VIP space and is available for live bookings 7 days a week."
The people behind the shows know what they're doing too - Robert Johnson (Scenic, Knitting Factory) and Scott Long (Scenic, Knitting Factory, Wetlands) started it, and now they have Bob D'Amico (Northsix) booking shows. Here's a sample of what's coming up:

Mon Mar 12 - Heavy Trash featuring Jon Spencer & Matt Verta-Ray & PowerSolo (TONIGHT)
Fri Mar 30 - Hella w/ Dirty Projectors / Who's Your Favorite Son God? (tix)
Sat Apr 07 - The World/Inferno Friendship Society w/ Paint it Black / The Vicious (tix)
Sat Apr 14 - The Locust / Cattle Decapitation - Daughters (tix)

All upcoming shows listed @ Ticketweb.

Fratellis add Brooklyn show. Sold out? Amy Winehouse cancels some shows :-( ALBUM STREAMS

Amy WinehouseFratellis

What do the Fratellis and Amy Winehouse have in common? They're both from the UK, they both just won Brit Awards, they both have the same agent, and they're both on Island (Universal). They both also have new albums out this week, and THEY'RE BOTH STREAMING IN FULL AT AOL.

AND they WERE both supposed to be playing one of my SXSW parties...until this morning when we found out that Amy Winehouse cancelled our show, and another show that day, and two shows in the UK. More cancellations to come? I don't know, but her show at Bowery tomorrow night still seems to be on, as are the rest of her tour dates. Here's what's in the news:

The father of British pop star Amy Winehouse has pleaded with his daughter to take a break from her busy schedule - or end up facing rehab.

Dad Mitch believes the Rehab singer's hectic schedule is taking its toll - as well as her recent split from boyfriend Alex Jones-Donelly.

Twenty-three-year-old Winehouse cancelled two concerts in London last week despite being spotted buying alcohol at a local grocery store hours before a gig. [FemaleFirst]

Luckily the Fratellis are still playing the show though, as well as 12 other awesome acts. Amy's replacement to be announced.

The Fratellis are also playing two sold out shows at Mercury Lounge in NYC after SXSW, and now a third show at Studio B in Brooklyn on March 24th. Is it really sold out too though? Or is it not on sale yet like they did with LCD Soundsystem?

Largehearted Boy's Interesting CD Releases This Week

VIDEO STREAM: Neil Young - Live At Massey Hall trailer (.MOV)
AUDIO STREAM: The Fratellis - Flathead (.asx)
AUDIO STREAM: The View - Superstar Tradesman (.asx)

Among this week's music releases, several stand out. Neil Young's concert film, Live at Massey Hall, Rosie Thomas's These Friends Of Mine, Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs' You Can't Buy a Gun When You're Crying, and the Innocence Mission's We Walked in Song are all highly recommended. I'm putting off my weekly trip to the record store this week until I get to Austin for SXSW, but I plan to pick up the remastered edition of the Dickies' Dawn of the Dickies (for which I have), as well as Lucy Kaplansky's new album, Over the Hills.

For parents of younger children, the Rockabye Baby series adds three albums to its roster this week: Lullaby Renditions of The Beatles, Lullabye Renditions of Bjork, and Lullaby Renditions Bob Marley, and Lisa Loeb and Elizabeth Mitchell collaborate on a children's album, Catch the Moon.

What can you recommend from this week's music release list?

CD releases:

!!!: Myth Takes [cd]
Amy Winehouse: Back To Black [cd]
Aqualung: Memory Man [cd]
Baby Teeth: Simp [cd]
Black Milk: Popular Demand [cd]
Corrs: Dreams: The Ultimate Corrs Collection (remastered) [cd]
Dat'r: Turn Up the Ghosts [cd]
Dickies: Dawn of the Dickies (remastered with bonus tracks) [cd]

"Small Internet radio hit by new royalty rates"

"After a two-year proceeding, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) has set rates for commercial and noncommercial webcasts and Internet simulcasts, which some executives say will put them out of business.....Ruth Seymour, GM of NPR-member station KCRW in Santa Monica, Calif., estimates the station will be on the hook for $216,000 in payments this year under the new rates. 'We operate in the basement of a community college, so this is a big bite,' she says." [Yahoo]

David Vandervelde

I caught David Vandervelde and band at Pianos when they passed through NYC last (Feb 27), and like everyone else who saw him I'll say something like "the boy can play guitar". Definitely a rockin' (and sometimes humorous) show - full reviews @ Waved Rumor and the redesigned Heartonastick.

Richard SwiftDavid's next shows will be at SXSW in just a few days. His Secretly Canadian labelmate Richard Swift will be there too, and since their music goes so well together (see MP3s above), it makes so much sense that the two of them are going on tour together in April. They play NYC twice - Luna Lounge on April 21st, and Pianos on April 22nd.
