DOWNLOAD: Ferraby Lionheart - A Crack In Time (MP3)
"Ferraby Lionheart soothed our hangovers with some mellow, acoustic songs while we enjoyed our first drinks of the day." [Hearya]

Last time I saw Ferraby he was just playing solo with a guitar. This time (BrooklynVegan/Le Tigre/NY2LON party) he played with a full band. Both good ways to see him. More pics below...

Touch & Go says, "People are starting to ask us about a new album from Slint. Here's the deal. Slint has been preparing for shows this summer. They want to play music together and have decided to work on new material. Once they find a rehearsal space (in Louisville, KY), they can begin this process. Please do not start rumors about an impending Slint recording. Anything new will take a while. With a little luck, Touch and Go will have something to release in the next few years."

LCD Soundsystem & other new streaming CDs & related stuff
DOWNLOAD: London, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down (unofficial remix) (MP3) (MORE)
It's a great week for new streaming releases at AOL. You can listen to the new Ted Leo, LCD Soundsystem, El-P, Modest Mouse, Willy Mason, and Andrew Bird.
It's also a good week for "Best New Music" with LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver landing a 9.2 and Panda Bear's Person Pitch getting an even higher 9.4 - .3 short of Funeral. I don't use numeric scales, but I also really love both albums.
The Village Voice has great features on LCD Soundsystem (and here) and El-P.
The NY Times also covered LCD Soundsystem and El-P.
More unofficial 'Sound of Silver' remixes like the one above, here.
More LCD in this week's dance post. More El-P in this week's hip hop post. More new releases in this week's new releases. Panda Bear tickets still on sale.

PELA's SXSW diary + pics from Red Eyed Fly
I managed to catch Pela @ SXSW - Wednesday March 14th @ the Little Radio day party @ Red Eyed Fly to be exact.

Here's what Pela has to say about it
"Get to our first show at Red Eyed Fly. We get out of the van and immediately get help loading everything right to the stage where we immediately get on stage and start our show. The place was packed and people were into it. Right before we start our fourth song a local guy comes up to the stage with Eric's bass case and tells us he found it down at the river right behind the venue. We thank him and continue the show. This was the most humid day in recent memory. We were sweaty and tired but agreed that we sweat out the scotch from the night before. We then met a bunch of people, did a few interviews and headed back to the hotel for some rest. Going to hit the jacuzzi. Instead sleep happens." [Pela's SXSW diary on Gothamist]

Mew @ the Scoot Inn, Austin, TX (SXSW) - pics, video
LISTEN: Mew live on NPR @ SXSW (HTML page)

Next to New Violators going on at Noon, the biggest travesty at the during-SXSW party I did with AAM last Thursday (March 15, 2007) was that Cloud Cult (inside) and Mew (outside) started at the exact same time (5pm). I didn't realize that was gonna happen ahead of time, or I would have tried to make it different.
When I got done crying I decided to watch a couple of Cloud Cult songs, followed by almost all of Mew's set. I knew I could see Cloud Cult again at SXSW, and soon in NYC, not to mention the zillion times I've seen them already - so Mew it was.
Truth is, I should have just been thankful I could even get in the show unlike these pour diehard under-21 Mew fans stuck behind the fence...

Not that it matters, but since the show was outside Mew didn't use their usual video projections. And though I think Mew is best experienced on record, this show was still a great one. How was their performance at Irving Plaza last night (March 22)?
More pics, video & stuff below.....

Someone shot some video...
And iFilm was there to interview the band...

"After that, we headed over to the Scoot Inn. There we took in an awesome short set by The Twilight Sad. Then Mew took the main stage and Jake & I were right up front for an incredible 45 set by them. It fucking blew my mind how great they were!" [The Strains of Sad , Old Tune]
"Considering they’ve apparently been around for a while, boy do they all look like 16-year-olds. That Danish lifestyle must be good for ya. I was also pleased that they could really pull their layered sound off live (effects pedals = layered sound, I guess)." [gregmurphy's MOG]

Cloud Cult @ Scoot Inn, Austin, TX (SXSW) + MP3 & news
DOWNLOAD: Cloud Cult live on WOXY (3/17/07) (MP3) (info)
For reasons I'll explain later, I was only able to watch a couple of Cloud Cult songs when they played my show at The Scoot Inn in Austin on March 15th, 2007....

Pre-Order the new album - get goodies
"Cloud Cult's new album 'The Meaning of 8' won't be available in record stores across the U.S. until April 10, 2007. But the album is now available as a pre-sale special on this website only. We have put together some very special package deals for Cloud Cult fans who want the album before everyone else."
More pics & stuff below...

I wanted to see Cloud Cult again the next day at Fader, but I slept too late. Here's a review of that one...
I caught Cloud Cult, the sextet (or octet if you count the two artists painting on stage behind them) from Minneapolis, who sounded absolutely brilliant. It surprised me that there weren't more people there because it's bands like this that I feel really merit the exposure at these festivals. The inclusion of a cello and violin completely enhance their experimental northern sound and just make it all the more gorgeous. [Something Glorious]Previously

Ultragrrrl on the cover of the Voice Voice
I know this is old news - I even read it the morning I was leaving for SXSW last week, but since I never got to posting it, and I'm obsessive-compulsive like that... I figure better late than never.....

Be nice. More below....
----
"Sarah Lewitinn has become New York’s premier tastemaker—and that's what makes the haterati squirm." [Village Voice]

"COMING SOON... THE ULTRAGRRRL BACKLASH VOLUME 1 MILLION" [Ultragrrrl]

"Congrats to Sarah AND Tricia Romano!" [The Modern Age]
"The only thing I can add is that the cover didn't go over well with some members of our family." [Sarah's Brother Lawrence]
"About Those 38,000 Copies of Ultragrrrl's Book" [Gawker]
"I've never met Sarah Lewitinn (the woman best known to the world as the A&R rep and DJ Ultragrrrl), and I'm not sure I'd want to." [fourfour]
"We Read The Voice's Profile Of Ultragrrrl So You Don't Have To" [Idolator]
"Chris Ott -a fellow Village Voice contributor- vocally expressed his distaste for the article on the piece's website on Friday citing the possible conflict of interest in that Stolen Transmission [UltraGrrrl]'s band the Horrors played the Voice's SXSW showcase." [Yeti]
"Reporting or commenting on the news is one thing but being part of it is quite another." [Jason Gross]

the week in Dance w/ David Bruno (03/22/07)
While SXSW is starting to feature more DJs and electronic artists, its no match for the beat-laden Winter Music Conference. Held in Miami, WMC is celebrating its 22nd year as the premier dance music meeting point for heavy hitters and newcomers alike. WMC has evolved from a mainly industry, business-like conference to a bacchanal of the world's craziest parties convening on the beach in March. DJs, Producers, and Party Promoters descend on South Beach to unleash their best efforts at throwing the most talked about party of the week. Many critics have charged that Conference has become too watered down by commericalized party promotion (Ultra Fest?) and the lack of industry participation. However, you aren't really going to find a solid week of amazing dance talent getting together at any other time, or any other place like they do at WMC.
It's sunny and warm and house music sounds much, much better on the beach.

I've hightlighted some of the high profile nighttime events and afterparties below, but my favorite parties in Miami are the daytime parties at the hotel pools. Grab a cuban sandwhich to nurse your hangover and dance all day in the sun.
Resources: The List is the most extensive, but Flavorpill is on the ground as well. Tricia Romano also previews the Conference in the Voice.

First of all a HUGE thanks to Thunderbirds are Now! who came the rescue last minute and filled in for Amy Winehouse at the Brooklyn Vegan / Le Tigre NY2LON party in Austin during SXSW on Saturday (March 17, 2007). Here are some non-candid photos taken at the show by Getty photographer Tim Mosenfelder.

Kate Havnevik touring with Air, playing Joe's Pub tonight, LA
DOWNLOAD: Kate Havnevik - New Day (MP3)

I'm not totally sold on Norway's Kate Havnevik. What I've heard so far doesn't sound bad, but maybe she steals a little too much from Bjork? (even her logo seems to be ripping off Bjork). Kate's credentials include a song on Grey's Anatomy, working with Royksopp, opening for Sigur Ros, singing backup vocals for Britney Spears (true), and now going on tour with Air. Tonight (March 22) she plays Joe's Pub in NYC. She also plays The Hotel Cafe in LA on March 27th - the same day her debut album is released here in the U.S. For the rest of her tour dates, see Air's. Listen to a SXSW interview with her here.
Has anyone seen her live? She played a few NYC shows already, and at least two at SXSW.

Jamie T @ Fader Fort, Austin, TX (SXSW) - pics
I thought Jamie T was going to be sitting on a stool with a guitar, or sort of rapping, but actually he was energetic and playing with a full band. Not bad, though I only saw a few songs. One of them being "Stella" which I know the best.
I saw him at The Fader Fort at SXSW on March 16, 2007. That's where these pictures are from. Last night (March 21) he played Mercury Lounge in NYC. What was that like?

NY Scalping laws are expiring soon, may change

NY scalping laws are expiring soon
"....Under a law that expires in June, licensed ticket resellers may charge up to 45 percent above the face value of tickets for events at large arenas. But for places with fewer than 6,000 seats, including most Broadway theaters, those brokers are limited to no more than 20 percent, or $5 over face value, whichever is greater.....
....Mr. Schoenfeld said that the effect of the current law 'has been to penalize primary ticket sellers (who are not currently allowed to resell via auction sites, etc.) while rewarding the secondary marketplace, much of which is unregulated.' That problem could be turned into a solution, he said, 'by allowing authorized auction sites for ticket resale' that would provide additional consumer protections, like refunds for cancellations....." [NY Times]
Arkansas is also reconsidering their scalping laws.

Har Mar Superstar @ the Fader Fort (SXSW)
Fader hosted their usual impressive series of day shows at SXSW this year. The Western themed venue was called the Fader Fort, and it had tons of (mostly sponsored) rooms and pasageways that you could get lost in before letting out into a huge courtyard where the bands and DJs were playing. There was even an almost-naked, but not-a-cowboy hipster mascot....

Girl Talk, SXSW, Playgirl & politicians
The cult of Girl Talk @ Diesel party, SXSW - March 16, 2007

Girl Talk was all over SXSW. I didn't even try to see him, but ended up catching him twice. Once was at the Diesel-U-Music party on Friday night (March 16, 2007). It was where I went after the Iheartcomix party was busted. He went on right after Tokyo Police Club who went on after Matt & Kim.
Cult leader @ Diesel party, SXSW - March 16, 2007

The other time I saw Girl Talk was at the PACKED Pitchfork day party on the main stage of Emo's. Diesel had much more breathing room.
It's still unclear whether the mayor of Austin caught any Girl Talk shows at SXSW this year, but I'm sure Pennsylvania Congressman Mike Doyle would have been dancing on the stage had he been in Texas.
And had Girl Talk played the Playboy party, the mayor would have been sure to have seen Greg Gillis too. I'm actually surprised Playboy didn't book him now that I know he'll actually be making an appearance in their very own sister (brother?) publication...
First off, let's burst a few bubbles by mentioning that while Gillis will appear in an upcoming issue of Playgirl (specifically the "Man of the Year" issue), "he will be shirtless, in jean shorts and hightops...and doing air kicks," according to his publicist. In other words, if you've ever been to a Girl Talk show, you've probably seen more Gillis skin than Playgirl's readership. Be proud. [Pitchfork]Oh well.

'Illinois' & playmates @ the Playboy party, SXSW - March 15, 2007

I wouldn't have normally passed up the opportunity to see The Gossip and Voxtrot back-to-back (Thursday, March 15, 2007 - Kork showcase @ Emo's, SXSW), but majority rules, and in this case the majority of the group I was with at dinner that night couldn't get in to the show - so instead we found ourselves at the annual Playboy party. It was held at a TV studio-turned-party-space that was full of free food, free alcohol, free cigarettes, Playboy memorabilia, media, rock fans, and socialites. The music-loving mayor of Austin was even there.
Of course four Playboy playmates were walking around, hosting, introducting bands, and posing for pictures. They were dressed in semi-revealing bunny suits.
Ironically, Beth Ditto of the Gossip was back at Emo's showing even more skin.
OK, I exxagerated the "naked" part - Beth Ditto @ SXSW - March 15, 2007 (CRED)

Fujiya & Miyagi (three guys from the UK) played Mercury Lounge in NYC last night (March 20, 2007). It was their 3rd of three NYC shows, and it was seriously awesome. You couldn't help, but dance, and cheer, and just love them.

New Violators opened, but I missed them because I was over seeing David & The Citizens and Bang Gang at Canal Room. On my wait out of Mercury Lounge I heard mixed reviews - some hated New Violators, some loved them. Both sides tended to agree that they sound a lot like a cover band.

Spank Rock played SXSW, playing Coachella, NYC
This happened not long after I left, Todd P, SXSW - Mar 15, 2007 (CRED)

I came so close to seeing Spank Rock so many times at SXSW this year. One time was when he played the late night Todd P party (see above). I was there, but got too tired and left before he went on. Another time was at the Iheartcomix party at Blue Genie that got shut down an hour after starting. The cops kept me from Spank Rock that time. A third time was a party at the Scoot Inn that I just ended up not going to, AND I sort of tried to get Spank Rock to play both of my day parties, but that just didn't work out....SO, I'm gonna try not to miss his show May 15th at the new 800-capacity Highland Ballroom in the Meatpacking District in NYC. Tickets are on sale. The only other show he has right now is April 29th @ Coachella. No tour dates below.

RIP Roxy & Vinylmania & Crobar (sort of)
Last Dance @ The Roxy, NYC - March 11, 2007 (CRED)

"A wrecking ball will soon replace the disco ball at Roxy, the iconic nightclub that was home to New York’s longest running Saturday-night gay dance party." [NY Blade]
"'All good things must come to an end, but for the people involved, it seems almost like a dream. 'I'm surprised that it's lasted this long,' says Rauhofer. "It's sad to see another club go—this club with such a history. You know how it is in New York. Things come and go. Roxy, for what it was, lasted way longer than any other place. Once it's gone, people are going to value it way more.'" [Village Voice]
"West Village record shop Vinylmania has closed." [Gothamist]
"In the 70's, Vinylmania stores lined Carmine Street in the West Village." [NY1]
"Named from the building’s original tenant, Colonel Francis Messmore, Studio Mezmor occupies the space that once belonged to Crobar. But despite new owners and slight renovations, not much has changed." [clubplanet]

Earl Greyhound & the mayor of Austin
The video was shot at the Gothamist/Austinist/Gorilla Vs Bear show at the Mohawk on March 14, 2007. I did go to the party, but too late to see Mayor Will Wynn speak. I saw him later in the week though - at the Playboy party (more about that later).

New Violators @ The Scoot Inn, Austin, TX (SXSW) - pics
"Like Moz fronting an early 80's new-wave band" [Torr]

SXSW day shows are what they are. My Thursday day show with AAM during SXSW this year (March 15, 2007) was in a semi-remote location on a week day, and up against a zillion other day shows going on at the same time. That said, the show was a huge success, but not that many people showed up right at noon when we started. That's when Norway's New Violators went on - right at noon, but they handled it really well. They mostly spoke in Norweigian so it was hard to understand, but I think they were joking a little at how silly the whole thing seemed.

All I could think about during their set was how much fun it would be to see them fully awake, at midnight, and at a packed club full of drunk dancing people (myself included). Then again, it was awesome that we were getting our own private show right there outside in Texas at the Scoot Inn.
Anyway, they were great, but you probably won't think so if you get too caught up on WHO the band sounds like. Instead just enjoy their catchy-dancey-big-synth-eighties sound. They're completely "fun", amusing, talented, and they have the charisma - even if at times they seem just like a really good cover band (listen @ MySpace).
I didn't see any of their other SXSW or NYC shows so far, but I'm hoping to catch them at least one more time while they're in NYC this week - and hopefully next time at something like a Mother f*cker party, or Studio B or something.
New Violators play again tonight (March 20) @ Mercury Lounge, and tomorrow (March 21) @ Pianos. More pics below...

They played Stereogum's show too, and the Village Voice wrote something about them.

White Stripes NOT Tour Dates
This poster was all over Austin this week (VIA)

The White Stripes posted this message on their website:
With unbridled enthusiasm for the June release of 'Icky Thump', various publications and web sites have posted a North American tour routing that holds no semblance of reality. Indeed, it looks like their journalists simply found and printed the tour routing the band did in support of their 2005 release, 'Get Behind Me Satan'.Not surprisingly, Wikipedia says it was NME who posted the wrong information. Here are their real tour dates so far:In fact, The White Stripes have yet to confirm their North American routing as of yet. But we are happy to say that it will include all 10 provinces and 3 territories of Canada, as well as the remaining 16 states of the United States the band have yet to play. A few major markets that have been journeyed to in the past will be also be included.
The North American tour will start in the state of Tennessee.
Best Regards,
The White Stripes Management

Daniel Johnston (the Nazi?) played SXSW
Daniel Johnston & THe Nightmares @ SXSW - March 17, 2007 (CRED)

Daniel Johnston played SXSW this year. I was there, but I never saw him. Though I was pretty excited Daniel was playing, I didn't even make a serious effort to see him when I got there. I never checked to see exactly how many shows he was playing, but I knew I'd have to ditch my own day show to see him one time, and that another one of his shows was in the convention center (aka I wasn't getting in without a badge).
Sunday night over dinner I was telling a friend from Austin how disappointed I was - if only I had planned more maybe I could have caught him. My friend asked if I had heard about Daniel's recent interest in anti-semitism and Nazis. I said I hadn't. He said it was true. I said I guess I didn't regret missing him as much anymore. Neither of us had heard anything about how the SXSW shows went.
Today I did a search, and it looks like not only is it true, but it surfaced in Daniel's act at SXSW too. Here's an interesting review:
Today at the Convention Center, Austin icon and OG “outsider artist” Daniel Johnston told two jokes before a jam-packed day stage crowd:Further confirmation at The Mercury News and at James Hill's blog.1. “I heard they just sentenced a man to the death penalty… for trying to commit suicide.”
2. “I heard the Jews are having a pajama party… at the concentration camp.”
Daniel punctuated the last one, which drew a pretty uncomfortable silence, with a Nazi salute and a screechy “Heil Hitler.” [scan]
Can you blame Daniel for anything he says? His mental illness is well documented. Is it just for shock value? As usual, I don't know, but I don't really like it. I guess I'd need to know more about the context before rushing to judgement, but either way I say he drops it.
I wonder if David Bowie knows. Then again, is the Highline Festival even really happening? The website still says "coming May 2007". hmm.

SXSW - Melvins, Buzzcocks, & Stooges
I missed all three of them....
"But all thoughts of the Melvins' agedness go right out the window when Crover and Coady fall into a martial lockstep that defies the lobes. As the sun beats down, they beat down, appearing as stereophonic hallucinations, two parts of one machine." [Idolator]
The Melvins @ Stubb's, Austin, TX - Mar 15, 2007 (CRED)

"The Buzzcocks were presented at SXSW by former Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell who noted how influencial Pete Shelley and company have been over the years." [GlossLip]
Buzzcocks @ Stubb's, Austin, TX - Mar 16, 2007 (CRED)

"Live, the Stooges are exactly as you would imagine. Pop is out front comanding all the attention, and the other band members are in the back, dutifully mixing up the magic." [River Front Times]

Arctic Monkeys - ticket lottery, Warner Brothers
What do you think of this?
Tickets for the Arctic Monkeys' upcoming U.K. dates will be distributed on a lottery basis to those fans who have already registered their interest online. Through the project, which is hosted at the alternative rockers' official Web site, gig-goers can register for only one date and one venue for the band's mid-size venue national tour.In other news, The Arctic Monkeys are working with Warner Brothers on their new album, and touring the U.S.Successful applicants will be randomly selected by a computer, and served tomorrow (March 16) with a personal PIN code with which to purchase a ticket.
The system, according to a statement posted on the Arctic Monkey's site, allows "everyone to have the best and equal chance" to get tickets....[Billboard]

Beirut - played SXSW, MP3, needs video extras
DOWNLOAD: Beirut live on KEXP during SXSW (MP3) (more)
"Despite significant sound problems, the crowd lurved Condon's every move, whether he was singing or playing either ukulele or trumpet (or maybe it was a cornet). He sang in French and in vibrato-filled English, covering Gulag Orkestar and Lon Gisland material." [Pitchfork]
Beirut @ Emo's, Austin, TX - Mar 14, 2007 (CRED)

I missed both Beirut shows @ SXSW, partly because there are three more chances coming up to see them in NYC. Currently in Los Angeles, the band needs some extras to star in a new video:
We are looking for people of all ages to be extras. The video shoot is on Wednesday, March 21st and the hours you will need to spend with us are between 4-8pm. Dancing and costume-wearing may well be involved. If you're interested and free on that date please email to jib0613@yahoo.com as soon as you can.Grab more KEXP SXSW MP3's on KEXP's blog.

March 19, 2007
hi, back sort of, sorry, email full, etc...
The Pogues @ Roseland, NYC - March 15, 2007 (CRED)

Hey all, sorry about the site going dead the past few days. I tried to make sure I could keep things going during SXSW, but obviously failed miserably. On top of that, I didn't realize my email was full the whole time so I pretty much haven't received anything to my POS Hotmail since Wednesday - please re-send if someting was returned to you (but no attached MP3s please). Thanks.
I'm actually still in Austin while I'm writing this, but am managing to get these few new posts up before my plane leaves back for NYC. Full SXSW coverage will start tonight (Monday) or tomorrow at which time things will be back to normal. Hopefully in the future I can make sure the site runs even during vacation.
I saw a ton of stuff while I was here, but of course still feel like I missed everything. People keep telling me Rage Against the Machine played, but then others say it didn't actually happen. Both of my day shows kept me really busy, but were great. Everyone asks "what was the best thing you saw?" It's all such a blur right now, so I have no idea, but semi-randomly catching Roky Erikson and Spoon at the annual during-SXSW "Ice Cream Social" was pretty cool, and Todd P's late night outlaw party on train tracks where rappers were performing on top of a car was also really great even though I was so tired at it.
A bunch of stuff I went to got shut down early by the police who were shutting down unofficial night parties left and right this year. That sucked. I fell asleep and missed the last night VICE party at an Elk's Lodge (it's 2nd location after getting moved), but that also got shut down early after a wall or balcony collapsed. Les Savy Fav managed to play one song before the police swarmed in. Nobody was hurt.
More later.....pictures obvs...
How were the Pogues? How was your SXSW? What other good stuff happened?
