7 bands from Finland (who happen to be playing SXSW)
Last month I wrote a post about bands from Finland visiting the U.S.A. this month. That included a show at Sin-e Sunday night, and one at Knitting Factory that happened last night. Did anyone go to either of them?
In the article below, It's a Trap's Avi Roig discusses many of the same Finnish bands. One notable addition is FUN who are here, not only to play some shows, but to record with the one-and-only Steve Albini in his Chicago studio. On March 23rd FUN joins the cast of Marissa Nadler, Tim Fite, Shy Child, and Pela at a Brooklyn Vegan-sponsored show at Sin-e in NYC (tickets still on sale). And now, Avi....

Okay, I'm cheating a little on this one as they're not appearing at any 'official' SXSW events, but that doesn't matter. FUN sound like Rapeman and are coming to the US to record their new album at Electrical Audio in Chicago with Steve Albini and this might be the only chance America gets to see them live. Another band that appeared on my first "Reader's companion" compilation.

Callisto are one of the better Neuriscan-type (that's a reference to the trinity of Neurosis/Isis/Pelican, mind you) bands out there right now, which should come as no surprise considering Finland's strong doom heritage.

Finland's leading mallpunk/mainstreamo act. Despite my distaste for this sort of stuff, I grudgingly admit that Disco Ensemble have a few good songs and will probably put on a good show.

I'm not crazy about Astrid Swan's solo record "Poverina" which Minty Fresh licensed for a North American release, but her work with Treeball (Finland's New Pornographers?) is excellent. Lots of free downloads at their site.

Sorry to change the subject...but what's the deal with Kings of Leon? Just got word that dates were announced.

I didn't get to go to the shows, but this guy I know who is Finnish may have. He runs a website called indigo.tv, which has music videos from a few of these bands on it (KTU, Disco Ensemble, and 22-Pistepirkko).

But why don't the *good* Finnish groups ever come to the U.S.? Paavoharju, Joose Keskitalo, Shogun Kunitoki, Risto...? Sigh.
