Arcade Fire venues & The High Line Festival lineup (finally)
Win Butler isn't doing so well, but assuming he gets better soon, this is what (where) NYC has to look forward to:
Arcade Fire in NYC, May 2007
7 - United Palace Theatre (175th St)
8 - United Palace Theatre (175th St)
9 - Radio City Music Hall (Inaugural High Line Festival Event)

Yep, even David Bowie seems to know that this announcement didn't live up to the hype...
"I thought it a very cool deal to be asked to curate the Highline Festival. The request was for me to choose artists and acts that I myself would go out of my way to see. Although this inaugural year will be modest in scale we've been pretty lucky in that many whom I asked have accepted.Keep reading for complete "festival" details....I'm also pleased that many emerging artists are participating alongside more established talents that represent a fairly wide cross section of disciplines within the arts community. I would really hope that the exposure this festival affords will help these folk get the attention they deserve."
The Polyphonic Spree @ SXSW - March 17, 2007 (CRED)

MUSIC
May 9th THE ARCADE FIRE Radio City Music Hall, 8:00pm. (maybe Bowie WILL play at least one song?)
May 10th AIR Theatre at Madison Square Garden, 8:00pm. (You say Highline, I say tomato)
May 11th THE POLYPHONIC SPREE Hammerstein Ballroom, 8:00pm.
May 15th DEERHOOF Irving Plaza, 8:00pm. (check)
May 16th DANIEL JOHNSTON, BANG ON A CAN ALL STARS, THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY High Line Ballroom, 8:00 pm. (check)
May 19th THE SECRET MACHINES High Line Ballroom, 8:00pm. (check)
----
The only real surprise is that TV on the Radio won't be playing the festival at all. The Polyphonic Spree were a surprise too I guess, but at Hammerstein? Air seems to be touring with or without David Bowie's approval, Daniel Johnston used to be exciting, and this will be the third time Deerhoof plays Irving Plaza in less than a year.
And is the fact that some of "the High Line" is at the "the Highline" a coincidence, or are they related somehow? Is the Highline Ballroom under the High Line which the H&M High Line festival is benefitting?
No offense to anyone involved. I'm sure all or most of the shows will be great - including the non-"music" ones below....
----

And can people pleeeeeaaaase stop "CURATING" shows. It's such a loaded, pretentious word.

Wait.. I thought Secret Machines had broken up?
Posted by Steve | March 26, 2007 8:17 AM
While on the topic of lineup announcements...the Rock the Bells lineup has been released as well, a lot of great artists added to initial bands RATM and Wu-Tang, tix will be $80 + fees for gen adm., or $150 for a VIP pass.
Posted by MBF | March 26, 2007 8:50 AM
VIP PASS....RAGE against that machine!
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 9:02 AM
I think the irony is that you would hear none of these bands' music played at H&M. The stores usually play some sort of Timbaland crap.

May 15th DEERHOOF Irving Plaza, 8:00pm. (check)
uhh! Isn't electrelane playing that night?

Thanks for noticing them on the bill Steve. A friend is crazy for this band and I let her know about it.

What?!? The High Line festival isn't on the High Line? Lame.
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 10:19 AM
Hahaha that vip ticket for the Rock the Bells show is a complete ripoff. Firstly, anyone thinking that the vip area and supposed party is going to be backstage or involve any of the artists is smoking crack. It will be some tent off to the side somewhere with a bar where you get 2 free drink tickets. The backpack and poster and laminate will be cheap of course. What a joke. Good to see RATM coming back just in time to fight corporate greed.
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 10:49 AM
The actual High Line is under construction and won't be ready for a few years. Don't confuse it with the "H&M" High Line festival.
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 10:52 AM
H&M presents?? I am no longer looking forward to this "festival". That is the least exciting looking flier I've ever seen. I'm only excited about Ricky Gervais, and he didn't need Bowie's help to do Madison Square Garden. It looks like he was just tacked on. I love you David, but la-ame.
Posted by Camille | March 26, 2007 11:00 AM
Presenting Sponsor of Ricky Gervais at The Theater at Madison Square Garden is JetBlue Airways...The whole festival is brought to you by LIVE NATION (a spin off of Clear Channel).
Posted by corporatewhistleblower | March 26, 2007 11:06 AM
Seriously...how is this a "festival" in any way? B/c Bowie picked the bands? I'm sorry, but enough is enough with David Bowie.
"Ooooh...David Bowie likes Arcade Fire!! Did you hear?!?! David Bowie likes TVOTR!!!"
Why do people care whether or not this guy endorses bands? Am I missing something?
Posted by Drugs Delaney | March 26, 2007 11:07 AM
The dates at United Palace are up on Ticketmaster...on sale Friday, March 30th at 10am...
Get your page reloading finger ready kids!
Posted by brian-nyc | March 26, 2007 11:13 AM
The H&M High Line Festival is a new multi-discipline arts festival that will be curated each year by a different artist. David Bowie is only the intial curator.
It's a "festival" thanks to it's corporate sponsorhip.
Posted by corporatewhistleblower | March 26, 2007 11:17 AM
But what does this festival have to do with the High Line? I was so ready to go up there for a show.

united palace dates are up on ticketmaster. $35 before fees, so figure $50/ticket after fees. :x
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 11:31 AM
"The inaugural 10-day festival will take place in venues along the High Line"
Most of these venues are nowhere near the High Line, especially Radio City Music Hall and Irving Plaza. All together, there really is nothing that ties these events together (single ticket) or ties the events to the High Line.
What we have basically have are a bunch of disjoint concerts and other events. There is no unity or sense of a "festival". Very lame indeed. These are just shows that would have happened anyways, nothing makes the special or unique.
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 12:00 PM
Ricky Gervais's stand-up is seriously bad. You should check You Tube and sites like that for a taster before booking tix.
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 12:07 PM
so... is each event is being ticketed separately? also any details on when/where exactly these tickets go on sale? ticketmaster?
Posted by patrick Donahue | March 26, 2007 12:33 PM
I've watched Gervais stand-up before, and don't think it's seriously bad.
Posted by Brian | March 26, 2007 12:46 PM
Live Nation operates Hammerstein and Irving Plaza which explains their presence in the lineup. Live Nation doesn't have a venue in nyc the size of Cablevision's Radio City or Theatre at Madison Square Garden so they partner with them for the events at those venues.
None of these venues are very close to the High Line.

OMG . . . Arcade Fire!!!! I just wet myself!!!!
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 1:06 PM
If anyone remembers the before/after for Jeff Tweedy's voice after he had Sinus surgery, you might expect Win's singing voice to sound a little different after his scheduled operation.

LAME BOWIE, LAME. 7 guys from Chile are going to NYC only to watch the High Line Festival, and Bowie only put on the bill some disperse acts...Not even Bowie is playing? .... the most awful and idiot festival i´ve ever heard.
Posted by martin | March 26, 2007 3:07 PM
This is addressed to the 7 Chileans:
Why the hell did you come to NYC in search of a music festival? Just... why? We don't have good music festivals in the U.S. anymore, let alone New York City. If you want to attend a good festival you need to head to the UK/Europe. I think this is common knowledge.

$35.50 before fees for radio city. so expect $50/ticket after ticketmaster fees. i'm on the fence for this.
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 6:07 PM
"Why the hell did you come to NYC in search of a music festival? "
These Chileans are not alone. David Bowie has rabid fans that instantly started making plans to go to NYC when they heard about the High Line Festival. Most of them changed their plans when they found out he wouldn't be playing, but there are probably still a bunch who unfortunately saved their money, took days off of work, bought plane tickets, and rented hotel rooms.
Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 6:30 PM
I can't wait until I can go shopping on the Highline. Do you think there'll be an H&M there?
Posted by localaffiliates | March 26, 2007 10:37 PM
I think someone is trolling for more comments, so I'll bite ...
"we don't have good music festivals in the U.S. ..."
You're right - SXSW, WMC, ACL, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Pitchfork, Intonation, Lollapalooza, Jazzfest, Vegoose, Voodoo, Langerado, Wakarusa, Telluride, 10klf, Allgood, HSMF, and Noisepop all suck.
"... anymore ..."
I guess nothing can top the original Woodstock?
"... let alone New York City ..."
Agreed. CMJ stinks, right BV?
Also, no bands ever come here around New Years Eve or any other holiday (e.g. Pogues on St. Paddy's) either.
New York Sucks.

Fuck me! ... here we go already!
After this show sells out, you'll be back on here with your "oh, I can't believe this show sold out already, I don't want to go all the way up to 175th Street and I just can't afford these scalper prices for Radio City! What do I dooooooh"
Get a grip!
Posted by froggy | March 27, 2007 3:44 AM
So why isn't he playing? Hell, why won't he play Coachella?
Posted by Bort | March 27, 2007 7:24 AM
anyone know who else is playing radio city? $50 (with taxes and fees) is just not worth it for arcade fire alone.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2007 8:36 AM
hey twat at 3:44 am, i live in washington heights. not everyone lives off bedford. instead of tunneling it into radio city, why not airplane it back to oklahoma?

Pot. Kettle. Black.
Don't act "tough" because you live in a ghetto. You are no native NYCer.

If 10.26am can say "twat", can I say "cunt" ... pretty please?
Posted by froggy | March 27, 2007 11:28 AM
i don't think bowery presents would be putting on shows for the hipsters in a ghetto. if you think washington heights is a ghetto, you probably haven't been up there in 15 years.

Can anyone else comment on that? I'm new in NYC and my girlfriend's rascist co-workers (who haven't been above midtown, uhm, ever) got her second guessing going anywhere near there.

Bowery Presents is obviously making more dough by putting on shows at a lower cost venue... United Palace is a church by day (aka The Christ United Church "Palace Cathedral")...
The property is fully owned by the evangelist Reverend Ike who, according to wikipedia, owns a fleet of Rolls-Royces (a different color for every day of the week, appointed in mink), diamond rings and multiple mansions. Reverend Ike supplements his income by renting out the space for live performances.
Posted by jack | March 27, 2007 3:32 PM
There's prime real estate to be found in Washington Heights west of Broadway. In fact, lots of the "hipsters" that can't afford Brooklyn have been moving in over the past few years (and into Inwood to the north, where tons of musicians can be found) leading to all sorts of gentrification and skyrocketing rents. It's certainly not a bad area by any means (and, to be fair, there really aren't any "bad" areas left in Manhattan). It's also less than 20 minutes to midtown on the (A). The area definitely had its problems during, say, the 80s, but the 90s and the influx of yuppies into the city sort of ended all that.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2007 4:13 PM
1:47 p.m. honestly thinks Webster Hall is in a ghetto? Rents really don't get much higher than the area surrounding Webster.
Also, Washington Heights has been home to middle and upper class Jewish families for decades, especially along the Hudson River. Yeshiva University, anyone? Try finding an affordable condo overlooking the George Washington Bridge.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2007 4:17 PM
"Can anyone else comment on that? I'm new in NYC and my girlfriend's rascist co-workers (who haven't been above midtown, uhm, ever) got her second guessing going anywhere near there."
Unfortunately, some people come to New York and think the city stops at 42nd, sometimes at 59th or 66th. We call them tourists. You can spot them carrying "New York City" maps that feature about 1/3 of Manhattan and, well, nothing else. Your girlfriend's racist co-workers need to get over their little bigotry. If you or them or anyone else is concerned, just read the weekly crime reports posted on the NYPD site. Google the neighborhoods for recent crimes. Not only will you find that crime is actually far less in what you believe to be dangerous neighborhoods, but in many cases, lower than the wealthier and whiter areas. I live in one of these so-called bad neighborhoods, and my giant apartment is bounded by three parks and the Hudson River, with weekly outdoor film screenings, a coffeeshop, bakery, and bar on the corner, a deli and two pizza shops up the block, and an assholistic neighbor that blasts nothing but WQXR (that's the classical radio station) all morning and night. Sometimes I hear a kid across the way practicing his drums or walk past a pick-up basketball game on the sidewalk on the way to the subway. But I also know many people that won't come near where I live because it's a "bad" neighborhood. Hrmm.
Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2007 4:34 PM
Wow, which is the lesser of 3 evils? When I go to concerts I can go to venues run by Reverend Ike, Live Nation (formerly known as Clear Channel Entertainment) or Cablevision.
Posted by hobsonschoice | March 27, 2007 5:12 PM
Lol Jack, you're right about United Palace being a less costly venue...straight from Rev. Ike's website http://www.revike.org/history.asp

It seems everything is sold out already too. Radio City was gone 12 minutes in. Even single seats. Once again...Holy Toledo.
