Beach House @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - pics

Seeing Beach House open for Grizzly Bear at Bowery Ballroom gave me a new appreciation for the Mazzy Star-esque Baltimore duo. Mazzy Star is one of my favorite bands of all time, so it was good to feel something similar again when Beach House's Victoria Legrand sang - and she can sing, reverb or not. Other comparisons people like to use are Galaxie 500, Spiritualized, and Slowdive. Though apprehensive at first, I loved them in the end.

They were better than Grizzly Bear.

haha, if you like overdrenched reverb and seated singers who barely move.

I love it when you mention the mazz BV. They were great weren't they....and 5 years later I'm still playing bavarian fruit bread on loop. So that's why we dig marissa nadler, beach house, victoria from concretes, etc. we just lookin for our next HOPE!

I like beach house and all, but to compare them to Galaxie 500, spiritualized and Slowdive is like comparing a street busker to the ny philharmonic.

totally forgot to mention, while we're on the subject of hope sandoval . . . MIRANDA LEE RICHARDS is like the queen of the search for the next mazzy starry girl. Jus sayin.

Last night I learned that you don't have to be on valium to enjoy Beach House, just the right mix of pot and vodka.

Speaking of Hope Sandoval, isn't she going to be the featured vocalist on the next Massive Attack release? I'm looking forward to that one.

Beach House was great.

Beach house were terrible. The same three boring arpeggiated reverbed chords through the whole set. Every song sounded the same. The only remarkable thing about it was how bad the songwriting was. After their set, they were upstairs in the back and would not shut up for all of grizzly bear's set(which was ALOT better by comparison)

Agree with Badhouse. Like the Beach House disc, show was terrible. She has a great voice but the over drenched reverb made it almost unlistenable and she has none of the x factor of Hope Sandoval. How can you LOVE Mazzy Star so much and make any kind of comparison.

Agreed... Grizzly Bear was amazing live, even though I don't care for their albums at all. Beach House is just the opposite: should have been great, but the reverb in her mic made me want to punch someone.

can I also agree here? I mean beach house are OK, they just need to change a lot of things. Less reverb, perhaps stand...do something to spice it up. Ultimately it just felt dull and awash in it's own reverb. You can't even compare their live show to grizzly bear's who were/are great, but honestly anyone would have sounded great after their set.
