Bright Eyes @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - March 2, 2007 (CRED)

Bright Eyes played two shows at Bowery Ballroom in NYC this weekend - I was at the 2nd one on Saturdy March 3rd. I couldn't have been more excited that M Ward joined Conor on stage for something-like nine songs, but I also have to admit that the show was way better when it was just Bright Eyes & band - they seemed tighter and more-rehearsed. The worst was when Conor sang on one or two of M (Matt)'s songs - Matt just sings them so much better. That said, the show was great - especially because of the kick-ass fiddle and trumpet parts - there were lots of them. I was told they played every song off the new Bright Eyes EP (MP3s above).

Unfortunately I missed both Craig Wedren shows.

i saw that bright eyes tour a few years back at the theatre in jersey city. m ward and jim james blew conor completely away. they are 100x more talented than that guy.

Wedren sucked, anyway.

my friend went to the friday show and said wedren sucked too.

I only caught the last few songs of Wedren's set on Friday night and thought it was fine. He even pulled out a Shudder to Think tune, which made me a happy boy.
Thought Bright Eyes' set was fantastic.

M. Ward was awesome and only came out for 2 songs and the 3 song encore the night before. The setlist for both shows was nearly identical and slightly disappointing for anyone who went both nights. I disagree with your commment as I enjoyed the two M. Ward songs (Lullaby + Exile and O'Brien). They were fun to hear.
Good times but with the setlists were more varied.

M Ward is great but Bright Eyes sucks so bad it is not even funny. No offense but i truly cannot understand what anyone likes about this guy or his music. Frankly, I think people who like him are idiots. I guess the majority of us just "don't get it"

Fantastic show! Broken guitar & violin strings, mic change due to too much spit, incredible violin playing that stunned the audience, M Ward, etc, etc. They really pulled it out for NYC.
Check out the snoozer review of the Chicago show on pitchfork.
We're a lucky bunch here in New York!

i went to the chicago show and both nyc shows and i enjoyed chicago and the 2nd nite at bowery the most. loved chicago for hearing so many songs for the first time ever live. thought the flow of everything was better at the 2nd night of bowery too. the violin kicks ass! and i was very surprised how polite and quiet the crowd was in nyc for the mellow songs.

Yes, the majority of people (like you) who have bad taste in music.

are there any pictures of Conor?

It is hard to be a Bright Eyes fan, or make statements about their shows because you never know what you are going to get. Back in the day when he was opening for people at Sokol, or The Cog Factory in Omaha, it depended on whether he started drinking before the show, or when he got on stage. Falling off chairs drunk and mumbles...or hitting it in stride. It can be frustrating for those not used to his exploits and antics. Or that he's not going to play a song because he is bored of it. He does not care, but he has surely been all over the place, and seems to only improve.

Doesn't Conor look a tad bit too much like Jarvis Cocker in the first photo?

12:38, I'm curious to know what music you do like. Can you name some some bands you're into that you think are way better than Bright Eyes?
By the way, you say "no offense" and go on to call us all idiots. Doesn't make much sense.

@MDK: Conor's broken guitar string is tacked up in my room.
I would have liked to hear him do a few acoustic solos. It felt pretty instrumentalized. M. was great.

you can stream four winds at the aol spinner site (BV, there's other good stuff on there now too--son volt, maria taylor, antibalas, etc.)

If anyone actually pays attention, the Rolling Stone magazine "blog" trashed the Saturday show. Screw 'em.

My one complaint: what is he thinking with that Michael Jackson hair?

I find it kind of funny how people spend so much time, or just time at all, bitching about things they don't like, you all should understand that just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it is shit!
It is just a rock -or folk, or however you want to label it- band, If you don't like the band, the lyrics, the singer and/or any of it, then don't go to their shows, don't write about them, and don't read the reviews and comments about them.
Just find something you actually like, but stop criticising other people's work.
Is it too hard?

Good criticism, Pauly!

7 nights at Town Hall at the end of May, very awesome.
considering could play a shittier bigger venue less nights, he gets some "dap" or "props" with sticking to the better venue for his next go-around.

I sing in a shaky voice, because my words are so emotionally powerful that they barely can get out of larynx. I'm so authentic. I still act like I'm on the verge of crying in the middle of every song, even after I've sang the song a thousand times on tour already. That's how sincere I am.
"beauty comes to those who have been waiting for something

this is the sound of the hopeless kids
as they scream from the basements of the houses of their parents"
No one will truly understand the pain of playing Playstation in your mom's basement as she yells "Dinnertime", and you realize that she's made Beef Stroganoff again.
No one.
Life is one big tragedy.
