Girl Talk, SXSW, Playgirl & politicians
The cult of Girl Talk @ Diesel party, SXSW - March 16, 2007

Girl Talk was all over SXSW. I didn't even try to see him, but ended up catching him twice. Once was at the Diesel-U-Music party on Friday night (March 16, 2007). It was where I went after the Iheartcomix party was busted. He went on right after Tokyo Police Club who went on after Matt & Kim.
Cult leader @ Diesel party, SXSW - March 16, 2007

The other time I saw Girl Talk was at the PACKED Pitchfork day party on the main stage of Emo's. Diesel had much more breathing room.
It's still unclear whether the mayor of Austin caught any Girl Talk shows at SXSW this year, but I'm sure Pennsylvania Congressman Mike Doyle would have been dancing on the stage had he been in Texas.
And had Girl Talk played the Playboy party, the mayor would have been sure to have seen Greg Gillis too. I'm actually surprised Playboy didn't book him now that I know he'll actually be making an appearance in their very own sister (brother?) publication...
First off, let's burst a few bubbles by mentioning that while Gillis will appear in an upcoming issue of Playgirl (specifically the "Man of the Year" issue), "he will be shirtless, in jean shorts and hightops...and doing air kicks," according to his publicist. In other words, if you've ever been to a Girl Talk show, you've probably seen more Gillis skin than Playgirl's readership. Be proud. [Pitchfork]Oh well.

The girl (with the checked headband) in the bottom-right corner of the first photo is ridiculously attractive! Holy wow.

It looks like, while everyone is going crazy over the already overrated Girl Talk, they missed the real show at the Diesel party.
For anyone who was there (clearly BV was not), the two opening bands stole the show at the SXSW Diesel party...Illinois and The Epochs. The songs were far superior and the energy, despite a smaller crowd, blew the others out of the water. The air kind of got let out when Matt and Kim took the stage and went downhill from there.
I must ask, isn't the point of being a blogger to go discover new music? Sounds like all BV (and others, no doubt) do at this festival is go see their band du jour over and over and over. (Did you really need to head over to see Girl Talk....why not go to a smaller club and see an up and coming band BEFORE you hear about it on Pitchfork?)
The same was true for most bloggers and most shows (did we all come down here to see The Melvins and Bloc Party? I assure you the real tastemakers, A&R people, etc are checking out new music in Austin...not just drooling over the same stuff they write about day and night...

Thank you Tanya Young for letting us all know what the point of being a blogger really is....I was really confused about that before your brilliant post.

Hey, I'm just saying....I went to SXSW this year, as I have for the past 5 years, and each time, I'm amazed at how when I go see new bands, bands that are phenomenal live, nobody is there unless they've already gotten reviewed and showered with praise by every blog under the sun. I just want to know....whoa are the people who START the buzz? It's not BV, they follow up on the buzz bands. Gothamist is a bit better at finding talent themselves, I guess. But for the most part, bloggers aren't out there finding these new acts.
Then again, maybe I'm just jealous because I too am a blogger, and when I see ones like this explode despite the fact that they're not exposing much new stuff, I get frustrated.
But still, I stand by my point and would love to hear about some good shows people saw in Austin (not the ones at Stub's or The Fader party, please....) Tell us about a band you happened to stumble upon that blew you away.

Ok Tanya, I'll bite, why don't you tell us all the name of your blog so we can see who the good undiscovered bands are.

I was at the Diesel party. The opening bands were boring and generic. Even the audience didn't seem to give a damn, most people were talking over them.

Fair enough, Sucka. I disagree with you, but at least you saw the other bands and can have an opinion. I'm just bored of people writing about the same acts again and again, not even taking the time to discover new stuff...esp. at SXSW, where most writers have a schedule that just takes them to the acts they've already been sweating for some time. I look forward to reading about new stuff on blogs when I get home from Texas and am disappointed when all I read is how much people liked Girl Talk for the twentieth time.
I do commend BV, however, for covering the Yo Majesty show...a show I stumbled upon and was happy I did. Kudos!
Sorry to be such a bitch, by the way. I was in a ranting mood today....I'm staying at my friends' in NY and sleeping on the hardwood floor, so I was grumpy this morning when I wrote that.
