Gramercy Theatre (concert venue) review - no heat?
Scatter o' Light went to the rescheduled stellastarr* show last night (March 7, 2007). It was rescheduled because the new NYC music venue wasn't ready to open on the original date. Here's part of their review:
saw stellastarr* at the gramercy theatre last night. this place used to be a movie theatre until live nation tore it up and turned it into a music venue. last night was its first night open. and you could tell. (unfinished, wooden steps and wooden doors leading to the ladies room. um, and NO HEAT.) people were wearing their coats and hats the whole show. but cold is better than hot (sometimes).Upcoming shows at the theatre include Birdmonster, Mika, Macy Gray, La Coka Nostra, Rasputina, Teddybears, Charlie Louvin, Henry Rollins spoken word, Amon Tobin, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Pretty Girls Make Graves.gramercy's floor space is similar in size to bowery, but more open and there is unreserved theatre style seating right behind the floor. i think it holds about 600 total. there are 2 bars on the floor and one in the basement.

Not sure why you didn't include this upcoming show (perhaps because it's sold out, in less than an hour no less?), but not surprising since Ween gets absolutely no respect and is consistently lumped into some assinine category like "comedy rock." Sigh.. anyway, BV didn't/isn't necessarily doing that, just a sore spot.
Anyway, Gene Ween (the lead singer of, um, Ween) is playing an acoustic set there Friday, March 23. Lucky to have grabbed tix right away, should be excellent... and there's always the off chance the whole band shows up. They *are* finishing up a new album after all.

Actaully Gene isn't the leas singer of Ween Dean is. Gener is the guitar player and BV has mention Ween multiple times.

I was there last night and it was friggin' cold. Even the singer from Monsters Are Waiting said something from the stage about it.
I saw some of the show from the seats in the back, and was amazed to see bunches of exposed wires sticking from the wall at head level where lights or some kind of electrical appliances used to be. No lighting on the stairs back there made for lots of tripping/drink spillage, which was kind of fun to watch in a sick way.
The show was pretty excellent nonetheless...stellastarr* were great.

But does anyone who's been there think after the kinks are worked out (ie. construction wise) that it will be a viable venue ?
How was the sound ? or the sight lines , etc How does it compare to the Bowery (its main competition methinks)

The good and the bad about the gramercy theatre
The place even when the finish it will be cheapy put together. The bathroom and downstairs area looked like it was done by two guys on crack. The downstairs is two small rooms that are very poorly designed.
Glad it was cold because you couldn't check your coat after 9pm because they were full.
got to love live nation security they were talking on the speaker phone during the show???
The sound was good but not great
I like the fact that the floor level was slanted obviously that was the way it was when it was a theatre I hope they keep it also like they had a seat area but large parts of it was reserved or blocked by the sound board.

i thought, for being a brand new place with a concrete floor, that the sound was pretty good. not great, they may still have some stuff to work out as far as sound. the lighting rigs that they have are very good, the lights looked really nice. the (nonseated) floor is at an incline, so if you're standing in the back you can see over people's heads. the stage is the same width of the building. pretty wide. also, when i got there (8:30) the coatcheck had run out of hanging space, so the woman said that they would have to lie the coats down on the ground. it feels kind of like a warehouse rather than a theater. nonetheless, it seems that once the paint dries, it will be a good venue.

Can someone tell me about the camera policy? Can you bring equipment in or is the venue on Live Nation lock down?

Yah... I didn't mean to say BV has anything against or hasn't written about Ween. Just that lots of people don't, and that it wasn't listed. Mickey/Dean sings a few tunes and does backup, anon, but Aaron/Mickey is the lead vocalist. Thanks.

I went to the Gramercy Theater last night and there definetly was heat but this venue is kind of a dump. The whole place has a very make shift feel, however the sound and music was great and the theater seats are comfortable to sit in.

The place was seriously freezing! (Especially up in the seats.)

I was there last night too (for Charlie Louvin) and they had the whole crowd seated. The floor was covered with folding chairs. I sat in the upper area and I loved the venue. No doubt the place still needs work and it somewhat unfinished but personally I'd prefer it to most NYC venues (Bowery excluded). The heat was working and the staff was pretty friendly. The sound and the sight lines (in the uppers at least) were great. One bit of advice though... BRING CASH. They didn't have an ATM or a credit card machine but they were cool with folks running to the bank a couple doors down.

I think I was the only one that didnt freeze that night.
I didnt even notice it was that cold honestly.
I did notice that the door to the womens bathroom took about 3 people to open though (heavy as hell)
the sound was ok.

What did you expect? Women are weaklings.

It seems the place has not been painted or re-decorated since about 1972. However, the sound and lighting for Clinic was very good, even sitting next to a wall halfway back up the balcony area.
I did see a handful of people trip on the (unilluminated) steps leading up to the balcony, and the men's bathroom (just outside the main concert area) was tiny and decrepit. Beer selection is crap and the security did their best to be friendly.
A mixed bag overall, but for sound and sightlines, it is a welcome addition to the city's rock venues.

I was just wondering, I plan on going to a concert the 29th, and it's 10days before my 16th birthday, and the age limit is 16+, are they strict about ID? How unfare is this? : [

hey, well you guys all suck anyway with a major f-u to livenation for booking ur lame shows that arent even worth seeing after we were sposed to buy the theatre and have it for student film screenings. just cuz live nation is a big corporation they outbid us and turned it into some lame second rate excuse for a music venue. whatever.

So I just got back from the Birdmonster show at Gramercy. I usually don't complain about stuff like this - but Gramercy Theater seriously had the worst sound I've ever heard in New York. It was white noise the entire time. Even the guitars sounded horrible - which I imagine you would have to go out of your way to do so. I've seen Birdmonster four times, so I know it wasn't the band.
How can a venue charge $14 a ticket and have sound that terrible? Perhaps they could cut costs from the FIVE DIFFERENT SECURITY GUYS(!) you have to go through to enter the place and not have all the bands wear backstage pass stickers like they're playing Giants Stadium.
I won't be going there again unless they make some major changes.
