The Pogues @ Roseland, NYC - March 15, 2007 (CRED)
Pogues @ Roseland

Hey all, sorry about the site going dead the past few days. I tried to make sure I could keep things going during SXSW, but obviously failed miserably. On top of that, I didn't realize my email was full the whole time so I pretty much haven't received anything to my POS Hotmail since Wednesday - please re-send if someting was returned to you (but no attached MP3s please). Thanks.

I'm actually still in Austin while I'm writing this, but am managing to get these few new posts up before my plane leaves back for NYC. Full SXSW coverage will start tonight (Monday) or tomorrow at which time things will be back to normal. Hopefully in the future I can make sure the site runs even during vacation.

I saw a ton of stuff while I was here, but of course still feel like I missed everything. People keep telling me Rage Against the Machine played, but then others say it didn't actually happen. Both of my day shows kept me really busy, but were great. Everyone asks "what was the best thing you saw?" It's all such a blur right now, so I have no idea, but semi-randomly catching Roky Erikson and Spoon at the annual during-SXSW "Ice Cream Social" was pretty cool, and Todd P's late night outlaw party on train tracks where rappers were performing on top of a car was also really great even though I was so tired at it.

A bunch of stuff I went to got shut down early by the police who were shutting down unofficial night parties left and right this year. That sucked. I fell asleep and missed the last night VICE party at an Elk's Lodge (it's 2nd location after getting moved), but that also got shut down early after a wall or balcony collapsed. Les Savy Fav managed to play one song before the police swarmed in. Nobody was hurt.

More later.....pictures obvs...

How were the Pogues? How was your SXSW? What other good stuff happened?

bvegan: use gmail, you won't have e-mail problems anymore. And you can then set it up so that mail from brooklynvegan.com redirects to the gmail. If you need some help with setting it up, let me know.

BV, I sent you a message on MySpace. It's not important, though.

Posted by R.D. | March 19, 2007 11:44 AM

Did they offer vegan frozen dessert at the ice cream social?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 11:45 AM

Fujiya & Miyagi last night at Mercury Lounge were absolutely incredible! Can't remember the last time I had so much fun. And I thought the crowd were totally into them.

Posted by Josh | March 19, 2007 11:56 AM

Pela kicked ass at sxsw. saw them during a day show and their showcase at eternal. peter & the wolf went on right before them at eternal and was the worst shit ever. the singer was drunk and did the same amount of tequila shots onstage as they did play songs (5). rosebuds were awesome at the saturday day show and instead of margot and the nucleur so so's going on after, a spontaneous set by the polyphonic spree ensued. twas crazyyyy. PB&J i saw twice even though they played like 17 times. sucks the bassist had his guitars stolen while in austin.

other bands that were great worth mentioning: brothers & sisters, ra ra riot (AWESOME showcase performance), matt & kim, octopus project, frog eyes, girl talk and probably more.

Well, the Secret Chiefs 3 played an amazing set at the Bowery on Thursday. Other than that, some of us took off a few days of drinking in preparation for what should be an amazing week of shows (at least for me):

Tuesday - Clutch/Dub Trio at Irving
Thursday- Clutch/Dubt Trio at Maxwell's
Friday - Gene Ween at Gramercy
Saturday - Ellen Allien at Studio B

"BV, do you have a job? Or, do you make a living off the site? We know so little about you.... "

let's keep it that way, superheroes work best when no-one knows their secret identity

Matt & Kim were great, saw them 2x's, crowd was amazing at Todd P's. I also dug Indian Jewelry, Tunng and Margot & the Nuclear So and So's. So many bands, hard to remember what all I saw now, I really should have written them all down.

I second the gmail suggestion. Works like a dream.

One of the highlight of my SXSW experience, at least the music part:

Outside of Emos, middle of the day. Lily Allen walks by.

Me: Hey, it's Lily Allen!
Her: Hey, it's a douche bag!

whattabitch!

Posted by Mike | March 19, 2007 1:38 PM

BV is really Michael Bloomberg in disguise. He is a billionaire and does this website purely for our enjoyment.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 1:40 PM

hey mike, thats a pretty funny story...nicely done...it must be a blast going down there...and i third the Gmail suggestion

Have we determined yet if Brooklyn Vegan is male or female?

Posted by Nate | March 19, 2007 2:19 PM

bjork announced 3 shows for nyc.

Posted by shows | March 19, 2007 2:19 PM

HAHAHAHA
Go Go Lily Allen. That is awesome.

So MIke, the highlight of your trip to SXSW was being completely dissed and made a fool of by Lily Allen?

Sounds like she was only half right. Not only a douchebag but a moron as well.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 2:31 PM

Why does everybody like Matt and Kim?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 2:34 PM

sorry, is that shane mcgowan in the pic or do my eyes sorely and sadly deceive me?

Posted by rena | March 19, 2007 2:36 PM

Answer at banner on top - BV is "a vegan from Brooklyn" - c'mon people, how much more do you really need? :-)

Posted by Dfactor | March 19, 2007 3:03 PM

I'm pretty sure it's The Emperor circa Return of The Jedi

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 3:03 PM

BV got in really early in some IPOs in the tech industry and sold before the bubble burst. He's independently wealthy and a philanthropist in addition to running the site.

Posted by Matt | March 19, 2007 3:05 PM

why does everyone love matt and kim?

because they are awesome?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 3:17 PM

Lily Allen will be a distant memory in two years, so don't take that diss too hard. Why is it so hard for famous (and Lord do I use that term loosely in regards to her) people to be nice to someone who says hello or acknowledges them in public? God forbid she just said "Hey there!" or "Hi!" No, instead, some twit above has to defend her assholeness. For what reason?!?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 3:32 PM

rage didn't play but there was a huge amazing show with morello

shane looks like a cadaver in that pic, briefly reanimated by beer.

Posted by c | March 19, 2007 3:41 PM

it's odd that lily allen was such as ass at a music industry festival. if that's gonna be your attitude, then why even go? isn't self promotion the entire point of these things?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 3:42 PM

"Ever since I can remember, I bin poppin my collar"

Yawn . . . fuckin' YAWN

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 3:52 PM

Some people get a little tase of fame and immediately think their shit don't stink. Lilly's 15 minutes is almost over anyway.

Posted by Guava | March 19, 2007 3:55 PM

I used to like Lily Allen much more before I read her myspace blog and realized that she was an unabashed heartless brat.

Posted by jerry | March 19, 2007 3:58 PM

Welcome back.

Bjork's tour dates have just been announced:

May 08 - New York - Apollo Theater
May 12 - Chicago - Auditorium Theatre
May 15 - Denver - Red Rocks Amphitheatre
May 19 - San Francisco - Shoreline Amphitheatre
May 23 - Vancouver- Deer Lake Park

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 3:58 PM

BV, can you loan me a few million?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 3:59 PM

Why can't people just be chill and let people like Lily Allen just walk down the street without having to yell out their names? She knows who she is, she doesn't 500 people telling her every day. Give the girl a smile or a wink, a break . Self promotion? ... well we're talkin' about her so ... Lily gets her PR!

Posted by froggy | March 19, 2007 4:00 PM

So did Rage play SXSW or not????

Posted by Zack | March 19, 2007 4:03 PM

You mean people don't yell out "Froggy" everytime you walk down the street?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 4:14 PM

Yeah, totally agree with 2:31p and 4:00p. Usually these people doing the acknowledging are not being subtle or nice about it but simply trying to draw attention to themselves or trying to make the person feel uncomfortable.

Case in point, this guy Mike above. He is posting how it was a highlight and made him happy that he got a rise and nasty comment out of LIly Allen. Does not sound like he was simply trying to be nice and say hello. More like a "hey look at me i am cool i recognize you on a street" Something tells me the fools defending him are of the same ilk.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 4:23 PM

lily allen is hot and her music is aight but common, you are kidding yourself if you think she will be anything 2 years from now.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 4:30 PM

Yes, us "of the same ilk" are sooooooo glad to have an artist we admire and/or recognize act like a jerkoff to us just because we give 'em a shout-out on the street. There's no defense for rudeness, no matter who you are.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 4:34 PM

I crossed the street with Albert Hammond Jr. on the way to his set at Waterloo Records.

Posted by Mallory | March 19, 2007 4:36 PM

p.s. Froggy, these comments hardly constitute "PR." This is called bitchin' about a stuck-up wanktress.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 4:36 PM

BrooklynVegan is a former porn star with more than 200 movies still available!

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 5:02 PM

Simply put-rudeness begets rudeness. Who cares if Lily Allen is anything in 2 years. As of right now, she is hilarious for putting this dude in his place.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 5:08 PM

"I crossed the street with Albert Hammond Jr. on the way to his set at Waterloo Records."

And by "with" he means: "at the same time as."

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 5:10 PM

welcome back bv!! i missed you!! can't wait to read your big review...

3 different bjork nyc dates=incredible!

they will sell out in 5 seconds...

Posted by maria | March 19, 2007 5:33 PM

I doubt very much Lily Allen ... an upper middle class London bird ... uses the term "douche bag"! Sure, you have the right to give people a shout out on the street, but that's what leads them to travel in convoys of black escalades, surrounded by ten 'monkey men', instead of just walking down the street. Me, I prefer a to give a small acknowledgement, rather than yelling at them like a douche bag!

Posted by froggy | March 19, 2007 5:39 PM

"I doubt very much Lily Allen ... an upper middle class London bird ... uses the term "douche bag"! "
words are free man, millionaires as well as us poor folk will use the term 'douche bag' when necessary.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 6:01 PM

haha lily allen is awesome. that made me laugh.

Posted by steve | March 19, 2007 6:38 PM

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 6:43 PM

"words are free man, millionaires as well as us poor folk will use the term 'douche bag' when necessary."

erm...except if you're from London where no-one ever says that - along with fall, sidewalk and "I can't wait for the next Fratellis single"

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 6:48 PM

i just became a lily allen fan.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 7:13 PM

I crossed the street with BV once, that was my 15 seconds of greatness...

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 7:13 PM

There will be a presale for Bjork on 3/28.

Posted by Eduardo | March 19, 2007 7:39 PM

way to spill the beans eduardo

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 7:52 PM

the nightwatchman played - tom morello. don't think rage against the machine played. he rocked. his first night slash, perry farrell, les claypool, nuno bettencourt, alexi murdoch joined him on stage. it was out of control - the best show i saw.

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 8:16 PM

MTV somehow got video of the Tom Morello solo show with Slash, Perry Farrell, Les Claypool, Wayne Kramer, Alexei Murdoch show

Posted by modest mouse tix | March 19, 2007 9:36 PM

Bjork + Lily Allen + Amy Winehouse could not sell out Radio City + United Palace + The Apollo.

Posted by MathMajor/EducatedScalper | March 19, 2007 9:52 PM

Went to the cancelled Pogues show on Wed, went back Thurs for the show. I've loved RS&TL for years, never seen them live. The band were excellent, I wish Shane were in better shape but from what I've read he was in finer than usual form. I never realized how much of their catalogue I missed!! Shane MacGowan is god.

I've come to realize that Colin Meloy is just Shane reinvented as a bookish, saner man without a taste for the whiskey. Just think what he could accomplish with a wicked drug habit....but is a few years of absolute brilliance worth more than many years of near brilliance?

Posted by teritaki | March 19, 2007 10:06 PM

who does the booking at the apollo?

Posted by Anonymous | March 19, 2007 10:41 PM

sxsw was incredible.

we met david byrne on south congress!

highlights included polyphonic spree at club deville, andrew bird at emo's, pb&j were terrific too.

disappointed by deerhunter and the sound at todd p's parties.

Who does the booking at United Palace and who are they blowing? ... Bloc Party, Iggy, Arcade Fire, Bjork, Modest Mouse ... on 175th St? ... does that place even have a bar?

Posted by froggy | March 20, 2007 12:59 AM

it all has to do with me moving into that neighborhood.

gentrification, bitches.

Posted by Anonymous | March 20, 2007 1:12 AM

does this mean the hipsters are taking over washington heights now?

Posted by igottamove | March 20, 2007 2:40 AM

United Palace is booked by Bowery Presents.

Posted by Anonymous | March 20, 2007 9:16 AM

there goes the neighborhood.

Posted by Anonymous | March 20, 2007 9:52 AM

hipsters have been taking over washington heights and inwood for a few years (as the last "cheap" part of manhattan, but not really anymore). it's getting worse, but isn't anything new either.

Posted by Anonymous | March 20, 2007 10:02 AM

and oh, to realtors and hipsters, it's either WaHi or Hamilton Heights.

Our apologies to all who attended parties during SXSW that were shut down (ours included). Something was very different this year and we've just begun to investigate. Stay tuned.

Highlights:

Chad VanGaalen @ the Flemish Eye showcase...or should I say a video of him playing in his kitchen. He had troble crossing the border from Canada so he sent a 5 minute clip of himself which they played on the wall at Lambert's. The sound was actually pretty great.

Matt and Kim - Saw them at the Beauty Bar Patio. With the energy they exude on stage, no matter how technically talented they are, it made for an incredible show.

The High Strung @ Habana Calle 6 (Park the Van Showcase) Right before they started, Derek (drummer) pulled the plug for the string of lights circling the small stage. Chad Stoker pulled off his glasses and pulled on his Rock goggles. and he needed them. Indeed. That man is crazy.

Pattern is Movement - Hometapes Showcase - Mohawks
Andrew and Chris were joined by Scott Solter (producer of their last two releases and owner of Tiny telephones - homecamp of John Vanderslice awesomeness). Chris Ward (drums) sits up front and to watch him play is a delight. The disjointed, turning, scaling vocals by Andrew Thiboldeaux seem like movements of the classical type...and I guess they are, just pulled forth by the distortion of rock'n'roll.
