LISTEN: Mew live on NPR @ SXSW (HTML page)

Mew @ SXSW

Next to New Violators going on at Noon, the biggest travesty at the during-SXSW party I did with AAM last Thursday (March 15, 2007) was that Cloud Cult (inside) and Mew (outside) started at the exact same time (5pm). I didn't realize that was gonna happen ahead of time, or I would have tried to make it different.

When I got done crying I decided to watch a couple of Cloud Cult songs, followed by almost all of Mew's set. I knew I could see Cloud Cult again at SXSW, and soon in NYC, not to mention the zillion times I've seen them already - so Mew it was.

Truth is, I should have just been thankful I could even get in the show unlike these pour diehard under-21 Mew fans stuck behind the fence...

Mew @ SXSW

Not that it matters, but since the show was outside Mew didn't use their usual video projections. And though I think Mew is best experienced on record, this show was still a great one. How was their performance at Irving Plaza last night (March 22)?

Someone shot some video...

And iFilm was there to interview the band...

Mew @ SXSW

"After that, we headed over to the Scoot Inn. There we took in an awesome short set by The Twilight Sad. Then Mew took the main stage and Jake & I were right up front for an incredible 45 set by them. It fucking blew my mind how great they were!" [The Strains of Sad , Old Tune]

"Considering they’ve apparently been around for a while, boy do they all look like 16-year-olds. That Danish lifestyle must be good for ya. I was also pleased that they could really pull their layered sound off live (effects pedals = layered sound, I guess)." [gregmurphy's MOG]

Missed Mew last night at Irving. I was sick...and now I'm sick over missing the show. They are the best band around!
Love the pic of the two kids outside of the fence holding the signs. Classic!

Mew were great last night. They were very energetic and seemed really pleased to be there, despite the fact that they barely spoke.

There are some pictures here (including the set list):

Mew was amazing!!! They played a lengthy set and played ALL the songs I wanted to hear. The crowd was great as well. BV, I thought the show at Irving was better than their record.

The projection/visuals and acoustics of an indoor venue added a whole lot to their experience...they just wouldn't be the same outside playing in a tent.

mew was so medicore.

this is the 2nd time i saw them, 2nd time ive been dissapointed. those slower songs go on FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. so drawn out.

and the person above me doesnt know what theyre talking about. those projections are corny as hell.

To above poster...yeah, your music sounds sooooo much better.

they're amazing live, and not by virtue of their video projections (not bad though). i enjoy them on record but was blown away seeing them at irving, which i didn't anticipate. it was the best show for me since tom waits last summer. i just went for the free ticket, but i left an avid fan and hope to never miss them again (ie even if it's opening for block party!).

This was my third time seeing them, and by far the best. I hate people who say the slow songs drag out. Here's a dime. Buy yourself an attention span.

BTW... why doesn't Mew ever play 'Why Are You Looking Grave?'? Anyone know?

not strictly sxsw-related, but the times i've seen mew live they've been absolutely spellbinding. i do imagine they prosper in dark, inside venues rather than big sunny tents though. the projections make it all seem kind of otherwordly at times.

mew are one of the best bands live. and the projections are fantastic - they add heaps to the show and it's good for big crowds...

and The Delay, learn to spell mediocre. i'm sure you've read it enough in your reviews to know it by now.
