I was pretty much out of the city all weekend so I missed this...

No nudity, but there are reviews of both Irving Plaza shows at Music Snobbery, and one in Spanish at Texto Sonoro.

I was at Friday's show and was anyone else as surprised as me by how young the crowd was? I really didn't expect so many high school kids. I also thought the speakers were too loud (the words of an old fart, I know) - a lot of the nuances of the music seemed lost because of it.

That karaoke night sounds like a good time, OM definately puts on a good show, wonder how this will play out

I saw them at the Clinton, NY show. Pretty much the same set list and use of props. I thought it was amazing and would agree that they are sort of going towards a Flaming Lips direction. I will be interested to see what they pull out for Pitchfork Festival.

Well then why do you keep going? Idiot

Even the HS kids, the Sarah Lawrence kids, could not detract from the amazingness of OM 3/10 Irving. There for Studio B with bells on. First time we all willingly took fliers and said "hell yes, I'm going!"

love of montreal, they can't play live for shit though.

Posted by Ben Shapiro | March 12, 2007 1:27 AM

When I saw them they were dead on. Every song from Fauna sounded exactly like it did on the CD. I have no idea how someone could fall asleep seeing their show.

i saw the one on friday. i love of montreal but the show was terrible. i dont blame the band. i blame the sound, the crowd, the air, and of course myself.

did i just see a google ad for a westchester wedding band? if i were of montreal, i would play weddings once in a while. end the shows with eros entropic tundra.

Of course no nudity... these shows were 16+. It was fun, I had a great time dancing as everybody else (umh kids). The Past is a Grotesque Animal was the best. Next show is 21+... expect people with their arms crossed staring at Kevin.

when did of montreal turn into the scissor sisters?

I went to Friday's show and I had a great time. I stayed in the back, away from the annoying teenagers and danced away. I've never seen them live before though, so I don't have anything to compare the show to. Anyone know where I can get a setlist for Friday's show?

"i saw the one on friday. i love of montreal but the show was terrible. i dont blame the band. i blame the sound, the crowd, the air, and of course myself."

I tend to agree. It's my third time seeing them (first time at bowery for CMJ last year & the second their spring bowery show) & they just didn't get me as much this time. Of course they're always fantastic, but the sixteen year olds & the lame-os at the back kept me from enjoying it as much as I have in the past. My friend & I were dancing up a storm in the back & the people around us gave us dirty looks & didn't so much as tap their feet. Harsh. Thank god for the nice security guy at the door who gave us sets of earplugs, or I would be stone deaf right now!

Anyway, I still love them & will definitely make it out to the kareoke event. I hope this was just a fluke of location & sound.

&& The setlist is in that music snobbery review that BV posted.

Emma,
thanks for the setlist info. By the way, you are so right about people in the back. I thought I was the only one dancing back there. Not even my friend was dancing with me so I was really self-conscious. I knew people were rolling their eyes at me, but if they don't know how to have a good time, that's their loss!
Cheers

after every show i go to, i come here to read comments about how much it sucked because everyone at the show was lame. it is like my post-show epilogue.

Posted by josh | March 12, 2007 4:51 PM

Jeez, I went on Saturday and it was just about the best show I've seen all year. Everyone was dancing and having a good time. I don't think I've ever heard a crowd cheer so loud when they came out, either. Sounds like most of the negative comments were from Friday? I can see if someone found the show to be annoying or too over the top, but boring and terrible? I feel like I was watching a different show.

none of the assholes around me were dancing, and i was in the middle. i was jumping up and down the entire time, taking it all in and enjoying it, and the people around me were just not moving, thinking it was the most serious event in the world. that's not to say that people weren't dancing... they were, but you had to be in the right location. disappointing. don't go to an of montreal show without expecting to dance, dammit.

When are people going to learn that you can have fun at a concert even if there are 16 year olds dancing and having fun too? I don't get this attitude everyone has, it's like "well they're havin fun, so I guess I can't." You people make no sense.

Posted by MBF | March 13, 2007 7:55 AM

I danced through the whole Saturday show and had a blast. Favorite onstage drama piece was definitely the fruit salad, followed closely by the white onesey wearing ninja gimp dude hanging from the neck of Darth Vader. Barnes was dead on almost the entire time, the segues and bass solo were awesome, and it totally exceeded my expectations both musically and amusingly.

As for the young crowd, frankly I would rather be surrounded by 16 year olds dancing and pogoing than 22 year olds who don't know the music and are there because they heard a friend who "knows" music mention the band and aren't inclined to so much as nod their heads let alone dance. Although I will admit that when the lights came on I thought for a moment I was at an uglier dressed down prom afterparty circa 1997.

Posted by Moiche | March 13, 2007 1:27 PM

I went to the friday show and walked out after six songs, something I've NEVER done before. I could care less about the crowd, the sound was terrible, no bass in the mix, and the band flat out blew.

Posted by Wiz | March 14, 2007 9:04 AM

So, this is what I have learned: People who are obsessed with dancing hate everyone who doesn't dance and wants them to die. Is that right?

Posted by anonymous | March 14, 2007 9:27 AM

the crowd was awful, and the band knew it. kevin barnes was just going through the motions, i dont think he smiled once. the props and costumes were great but i think they replaced the performance he usually gives. they still delieved, they just didnt have the soul they had the other times i saw them. i went to their show in miami a year ago and it was they best i've ever been to. i even met kevin barnes and bp helium after the show and they were so cool. the lesson i learned was never go to irving plaza.

Anonymous, you're crazy. On Saturday, the crowd was really into it, the performance was great, and (this was my first time at Irving) the venue was awesome. The lighting was incredible compared to some of the other NYC venues I've visited (Bowery, for instance...), and the video playing through the band setups was a nice touch since the downtimes were soooo looong.
