Police, Smashing Pumpkins & Beastie Boys playing Virgin fests

Billy Corgan"Lest Americans feel left out after last week's Virgin Festival announcements, the organizers have announced a high profile lineup for the American edition of the fest. The Police, the Beastie Boys and Smashing Pumpkins will headline the second U.S. Virgin Fest, set for Aug. 4-5 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

The Pumpkins will also play the Toronto edition of V-Fest, alongside Bjork, the Killers, Interpol and Amy Winehouse. That event will be held Sept. 8-9 on Toronto Island. A May 20 Vancouver version will boast the Killers, AFI and My Chemical Romance at Thunderbird Stadium." [Punk News]

The whole "50% of the Smashing Pumpkins" thing is just such a buzzkill. I'm having such a hard time getting past this.

Isn't Pearl Jam headlining Lollapalooza?

Cheap flights from NY to Chicago if you buy early...Decisions, decisions...

I'm just not sure why everyone is so bothered by the thought of only Billy and Jimmy representing the Smashing Pumpkins. If you know anything about the band, you know that Billy really is the Smashing Pumpkins. Jimmy has always been a key member because he has always been an out-of-this-world type drummer and there were certain songs (i.e., Geek USA) that the Pumpkins wouldn't play without him on the kit. But come on now. The Smashing Pumpkins have always had a rotating lineup. The only thing new here is that James will likely not be on board. Will it be a little odd? Yes. But James never really influenced the sound of the band...Billy has always been the driving force and will continue to be the driving force as the Pumpkins make their comeback.

Wasn't Billy also the driving force behind Zwan?

Yeah, and John Lennon and Paul McCartney without George and Ringo would still be the Beatles.

yes, Sting has proved this over and over again. I hope the Russians do love their children too.

please, lets not start comparing smashing pumpkins to the beatles

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2007 4:36 PM

yeah, and george was just as important to the beatles as john lennon. i think PAUL and ringo are the expendable members... hmmm... i wonder when the two of them will do a "reunion"....

How much does the virgin festival usually cost?

Posted by Daniil | March 26, 2007 6:13 PM

lolla and virgin are on the same weekend.. might be a little physically challenging to play both, but it is possible.

i thought the pumpkins broke up...did they reform or was my initial thought wrong?

If you're into EDM Virgin Festival had a killer dance tent last year and rumor has it this year will be even stronger. Also Lolla was alright last year but with so many stages you inevitably miss more than half the acts. Virgin will kill it this year - without a doubt.
