Never mind Webster Hall, what about the Theater at MSG on March 26 & 27? Are they opening for another act?

Actually, they are selling a surprising amount of records. It does seem a little out of scale though

They are playing their video on MTV. Not MTVU, 2, 3, or whatever, original MTV. Thus I'm sure some boppers will be there regardless.
Though I say them play at the Plug awards and wasn't that impressed. All I could think was, "oh yeah, I used to kind of like the Dandy Warhols."

Did they sell out Bowery when they played there recently? They sold out the Mercury show the previous night.
I guess if they figure that they can add the capacity of both shows, they can (just about) equal one night at Webster.
We'll see...

And yet, they still don't suck nearly as bad as critical and hipster darlings The Arcade Fire!

If a band sells a lot of records that usually means people like the music. What's the mystery there? It's quite simple.
I've seen SSPU a number of times and I own their e.p. and Carnavas. They put on a solid and energetic live show. However, I can see why people would want to diss them. The bottom line is...they have really good songs. period. That's why they are getting a lot of attention from the press etc.
I look forward the seeing them again and buying their records.

First time i heard Lazy Eye, I thought lead singer was a chik with a bad cold. Then I saw them at the BV free set of shows, and was ackwardly suprised. Tokyo Police Club should have a lot more hype then sspu.

I thought they were, by far, the best act at the Plug Awards. The only problem was the sound mix. I'm looking forward to seeing them play more than four songs on Webster's system, mixed specifically to their sound.
Detractors (ie. those who may believe they're "the worst") should indicate whether they've heard the track "Well Thought Out Twinkles," which is one of my favorite tracks of the past year.
Also, the single "Lazy Eye" happens to be the only new indie track played on [the joke that is] FreeFM in New York, which may indicate that the single is even getting play on such confused stations that barely touch indie rock at all.
I think these guys will sell out Webster Hall. But I wouldn't be surprised if it happens close to the day of the show. Translation: stroll slowly over to Mercury Lounge to pick up your tickets rather than paying Ticketweb, because this *will* be a great show.

why would there possibly be such hatred for this band? i don't get it - can someone explain? or is there just general animosity for anyone and everyone who gets attention on this site?
Posted by BrooklynCarnivore | March 20, 2007 9:50 AM
this band is great because the shows are all ages and tweens have digital cameras.
i saw them during cmj and it was bad. bad. bad. lots of breathy-i-color-my-hair-i-rip-off-the-smashing-pumpkins kind of stuff.
Posted by olga | March 20, 2007 11:55 AM
They exhibit some Smashing Pumpkins influence but have their own sound. (Therefore, not a "rip off.")

I just checked the Webster Hall website and this show is now SOLD OUT. Some said it couldn't be done.

wow..a lot of meatheads at this show..much pushing and shoving and a few fists thrown by sox and yankees fans..brian had to stop the show and lecture the crowd on personal space..

Lecture the crowd on personal space?
Whatever I liked about the band previously totally went out the window after last night's show. I mean, I've been willing to let it slide that they are blatantly channeling Smashing Pumpkins. But did the lead singer have to emulate the worst of Mr. Corgan's personality, too? He was a total nancy-boy dick the entire night.
Yeah, he scolded some dudes in the front row for jumping/dancing too much and bouncing into some "young cuties" (his words, not mine). Now, I couldn't see what was going on, so it's impossible for me to know whether these were meatheads being assholes, or just guys getting a little too exuberant for a band they liked. So maybe he was right to play the stage traffic cop game. But he could have defused it by just telling them to chill. Instead, he used it as an opportunity to embarrass them. It was kind of a shite move, really.
At one point during the show, he said it was the NYC show they've always wanted to play - then he continued on to diss Webster Hall by adding "well, maybe not the venue we wanted." (For the record - WH has been putting on some great shows of late. I saw Ted Leo there recently and the energy was 200% better...and a few months before that, Sonic Youth put on one of the shows of the year there in support of Rather Ripped.)
OK, so then, after hamming it up for some industry execs (or, more likely, the drunk interns of industry execs, the execs more likely being at the Arctic Monkeys show across town) he started rambling on about how SSPU is playing some cheesy summer concert festivals...and how some of the other bands on those bills suck....and how this is really his crowd...
But if you go to their website, they are playing nothing but cheesy summer festivals for the next 3 months. If you don't like 'em, don't play 'em! But if you play 'em, then don't be a dick about it. Nobody is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to take the stage after Buckcherry. Take the money, put on a good show, and keep your pretentious mouth shut.
To be honest, the band is really held together by the solid bass playing of Nikki Monninger and the kick-ass drumming of Christopher Guanlao. My friends and I especially liked Guanlao's super-tall crash cymbal, which emphasized his decidedly Tayshaun Prince-like length and was fun to watch. To be honest, Aubert's guitar playing is pretty ordinary - it's barely audible unless he's completely shredding.
Last time I ever see them live - too bad, because they are easy on the ears otherwise.
