the new HIGHLINE BALLROOM -- LOU REED playing
LOU REED TO PERFORM THE GRAND OPENING OF THE HIGHLINE BALLROOM APRIL 30TH
The HighLine Ballroom, a new performance space inspired by the High Line Park, located in the meat packing district on 16th Street (between 9th & 10th Aves), will open April 30th with a special performance by Lou Reed featuring Mike Rathke on guitar and Jane Scarpantoni on cello. A limited number of tickets will be sold to the public for the HighLine Ballroom opening night performance by Lou Reed and will cost $85.Well, that answers the main question I had - the Highline Ballroom DOES have something to do with the High Line Park. We also already know that some of the performances for the David Bowie-curated High Line Festival (which benefits the High Line Park) are taking place in the Highline Ballroom. That includes the two shows by Laurie Anderson (who happens to be married to Lou Reed) (and who is separately being honored by Lou Reed, David Bowie, David Byrne and others to benefit the Kitchen).
The NY Post answers some other questions:
- The Highline Ballroom is owned by the family that owns BB King Blues Club & Grill and the Blue Note.
- The nightclub will take over the 10,000-foot spot formerly occupied by Glo and Powder.
- It's a terrific domed space with no columns and great sightlines
- The rent for the 15-year deal starts around $30 a foot.

The Disco Biscuits are playing the grand opening May 24th and 25th, not Lou Reed.

"The Disco Biscuits are playing the grand opening May 24th and 25th, not Lou Reed."
I have no idea what calender you are using, but in the Gergorian calendar, April 30 comes before May 24th.

have you posted anything about the fact that tonic is closing in the middle of april? it's a shame.
Posted by Anonymous | March 29, 2007 12:00 PM
what?? that's true about tonic?
that's sad, and I don't understand how it's not staying open. they raised a bunch of money in the 23rd hour the last time it was going to close and brought everything back to working order, right?
I can understand that the rent is probably getting higher and higher, but this is when john zorn is supposed to step in and save the club himself. after all, he helped start the place (is he still an owner?), makes good money on his own and is now sitting on top of a 500K macarthur genius grant.

Not sure thats true about Tonic. They have shows scheduled in May. (Not to mention 4/19 where I have tickets!!)
There was the scare about Tonic closing last year or the year before, but donations and support from artists proved the impact the club has had.
Nothing on their website about closing or anything.....
(BTW - the disco biscuit shows at higline will be incredible! BV, you need to cover more tDB)

Your new photo is an old photo. There is now a Western Beef grocery store on the first floor. I work in the building next door, and I can already forsee a long line of people blocking our entrance. Awesome?

Too funny, brooklyn vegan plugging a club in a building owned by Western Beef.
"Western Beef owns 431 W. 16th St. and occupies the first floor. It moved there after its previous location on West 14th Street was sold as a development site." (NY Post)
