I went; show was great. Big Sleep almost stole the show; they are an amazing band

Great crowd, very friendly, excellent slam dancing!

I skipped Sunday too. Too tired. Oh well.

sunday at bowery was a very fun show. the thermals bring such great energy. non-stop rock. yahoo.

Posted by sam | March 6, 2007 2:47 PM

went yesterday. the thermals killed it. the opening band before Big Sleep were AWESOME.

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2007 2:54 PM

Big Sleep is quite a snooze. Start off great and then their sets go on for far too long.

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2007 2:56 PM

I have no idea why you guys think the BIG SLEEP are amazing. They got boring after 2 songs!!!

How was Heather Lawless?

Posted by klaus_kinski | March 6, 2007 3:02 PM

Thermals were awesome Sunday night at the Bowery. Non-stop pogo-powered punk rock right from the start. Bassist Kathy kicks ass. Great moshpit of a crowd down front - nobody need any prompting, the audience were into it from the first note to the last.

Big Sleep were impressive too, winning over an initially apprehensive crowd. Their set maybe could have been shortened a little to maintain the powerful momentum they started with, but overall the pairing of these two bands was genius.

heather lawless was the worst thing EVER. I couldn't believe people were even laughing, she said nothing remotely funny. I just figured everyone was either drunk or high.

Posted by Anonymous | March 6, 2007 3:44 PM

heather lawless was awesome. her material really wasnt "funny" at all but the fact that she was presenting it as such made it hilarious. really it was kind of disturbing. in a funny way.

Went last night. Thermals were terrific, wild horses couldn't drag me away from that Thermal fueled pit. I caught most of The Big Sleep, wanted to like them because I had heard good things, thought a video of theirs I saw was good, but then I get there and they were doody. What's the appeal? Seriously, not rhetorically. To me they were completely funless, rockless and lifeless. I mean, I dig chick bassists too, hence The Thermals, but snoooring.

sunday night,
the big sleep were pretty good. got old quick but they were good.
thermals were amazing. crowd was great.

monday night,
meneguar opened and while it wasn't the best i've seen them, they were still great. played all new songs except one song from "i was born at night" and the two tracks from the 7". can't wait to hear their new album.
then i went to the back to see dan deacon who is always awesome. the sound in the back room was awful and dan deacon was bummed but still put on a great show. he's such a great personality. got everyone dancing in the front.
went back as big sleep had finished maybe their second song? again, good, but got old quickly.
thermals went on with the same setlist from sunday, that didn't really bother me much though. put on another great performance though the crowd wasn't as great as the first night.
all in all, two great shows.

i envy those seeing the hold steady/thermals double bill in the midwest.

I listened to Heather Lawless for maybe 3 minutes and couldn't take it anymore. Boring. Not funny.

Posted by CN | March 6, 2007 5:25 PM

heather lawless is the worst opening act. i don't understand how she became/is a stand up comedian. seriously awful.
the kid who got called out by the big sleep guitarist must have had ballz of steel. i enjoy the big sleep most when they are just "jamming"- their vocal strength is lacking.

the thermals, especially hutch, was all smiles/fun. the double bill with the hold steady will be amazing.

The Big Sleep were soooo good. I love when an opening act is more than a time killer.

Posted by kimmy | March 6, 2007 6:46 PM

my guess on big sleep: generational thing. Younger people probably don't like them as much as those of us raised on 70's-80's prog-rock-metal-punk stuff. I thought they were awesome, really pleasant surprise; but I can understand how hipsters weren't as wowed...

Posted by birdboy | March 6, 2007 6:52 PM

sunday night was amaaaaazing. the crowd had great energy, but nothing like the crowd at the product shop studio B show.

Posted by diana | March 6, 2007 7:29 PM

missed Bowery - but Studio B was a great time. Had to be at least 750 people.

One exception was the Big Sleep - who are beyond boring. Tight as hell, but dull as fuck. There are so many cookie cutter as bands just like them, how could anyone even pay attention? Made me wonder how the band members can muster enough focus on what they're doing inorder to practice as much as it must take for them so play so competently cliched.

bummer about Dan Deacon - their PA in the lapdance room is lame and fucked up his set, but he was entertaining as heck anyway, full audience participation set. He'll be better on Thursday at the Silent Barn.

Meneguar were great, the new songs are really solid - they hit their stride about halfway through the set and were on fire by the end of it.

Huge smiling dancing pit and lots of hilariously silly crowd surfing during Thermals.

hey thanks for the link! sounds like the studio b show was pretty great

Here's my semi-literate review of the show, if you can make it thru my diatribe about the bouncer:

http://inyourfacewithtanyaleet.blogspot.com/2007/03/thermals.html

to sum up: heather was funny, big sleep ok and the thermals rocked

Nobody found the thermals to be pedantic, preachy and overblown? At Studio B Hutch came off just like the jesusmachine types he rails against, pointing and pontificating. The other guitarist added nothing, save giving Hutch opportunities to not play guitar and to gesticulate instead. We found his voice to thin and kind of grating live.

The big sleep would have been great in half the time and without the playing-with-our-delay-echo-unit intro. That might have been cool when ELP did it, but I doubt it. All that aside their drummer is the shit!

Meneguar was good as always but I just can't get real excited about them. Even all the new stuff, though they do get props for giving us something different. So many bands play the same set so many times.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2007 11:07 AM

Just read the review linked a comment or two up. I'm confused. That drummer was a guy, right? Who plays like a girl, correct?

Posted by gender wa? | March 7, 2007 11:14 AM

OVERGROWN? OVERBLOWN? Nod if you're near if you can hear me.

If Hutch did anything, he didn't come off as preachy nor overblown. He was gracious and grateful to have such an enthusiastic crowd.

Posted by Anonymous | March 7, 2007 11:51 AM

I have to agree with the preachy comment. I don't like being pointed at. What is he, Bruce Springsteen?

Posted by a minion | March 8, 2007 8:10 AM

Anyone has an extra ticket to Of Montreal 3/10?

Posted by Eduardo | March 8, 2007 11:33 AM

Outrageously random ?: does anyone remember approx what time The Thermals hit the stage at Studio B? Got !!! tix there and may have a conflict depending on when they go on. Many thx.
