Of Montreal @ Coachella - Kevin Barnes (in a dress)

NOTE: Coachella is streaming online now.

Ok, it's not really a dress, but it fit the running theme. Here's a picture of Kevin Barnes and Of Montreal playing Coachella on Friday...

Kevin Barnes @ Coachella

5:25 p.m. Of Montreal whips up garish disco-rock as flamboyant as the band members’ costumes. Singer Kevin Barnes impersonates a mime, then dons a snappy drag-queen tennis-instructor number. [Chicago Tribune]
Last time Of Montreal played NYC, they did karaoke.

Patrick Wolf to still perform, or something

"Patrick Wolf is not quitting music. Despite his recent post on a fan message board saying, 'My final concert will be this November... I am not sure whether there will be anymore public communications after that. In fact, I am pretty sure there will be none,' it turns out Wolf just plans to take a little break from the cycle of touring and promoting records." [Pitchfork]

6th Annual Shortlist Music Prize finalists

Spank Rock (CRED)
Spank Rock

"April 27, 2007, Los Angeles: The Shortlist organization announced today the ten finalists for the Shortlist Music Prize, a peer-selected award that recognizes the most creative and adventurous albums of the year. The ten finalists are

  • Band of Horses
  • Beirut
  • Bonnie Prince Billy
  • Cat Power
  • Girl Talk
  • Hot Chip
  • Joanna Newsom
  • Regina Spektor
  • Spank Rock
  • Tom Waits
The finalists were selected from the initial Long List of sixty nominated albums by a panel of nine Listmakers including Franz Ferdinand, KT Tunstall, Panic at the Disco, Sufjan Stevens and members of Snow Patrol, the Killers and Flaming Lips. Drummer Ronnie Vannucci of the Killers said "the finalists are the backbone of what makes music special in the first place. They are each doing their own thing and it’s beautiful."

Anyone who reads this site will know that I'm all for every artist on that list, but I can't say I necessarily agree that it represents "the most creative and adventurous albums of" 2006. What do you think? Does Girl Talk belong on this list? Are mashup artists around the world groaning, or does he really stand out from the crowd? Is Bonnie Prince Billy in 2006 adventurous? Is Tom Waits? Are Band of Horses making the most creative indie rock out there? Ghostface? The Knife? What do you think?

Etch a Sketch (CRED)
Jesus & Mary Chain

"Singer Jim Reid seemed pissed off. Maybe he's always like that. Who knows? But after they had played a few songs he asked the crowd, 'Happy we're back?' Which of course got a huge cheer. He replied, 'fuck off' and looked at the drummer......Annie from Giant Drag appeared to sing background on 'Just Like Candy' and not the rumored Scarlett Johansson...." [LAIST]

Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon"Dan Deacon is a Baltimore, Maryland-based absurdist electronic music composer/performer. He attended Purchase College in Purchase, New York where he completed his graduate studies in electro-acoustic and computer music composition. He studied under composer/conductor Joel Thome. Currently, he lives at Wham City in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dan Deacon's compositional style is best classified in the Future Shock genre along with Video Hippos, Santa Dads, Blood Baby, Ecstatic Sunshine, Ponytail, and other bands in the growing Baltimore music scene." [Wikipedia]

Dan DeaconDan has released a bunch of albums over the past three years. One of them, Twacky Cats, is available for free above. It's licensed under creative commons.

Compare that with his new full-length album on Carpark records Spiderman of the Rings - out May 8th. He was gifted then, and seems to have perfected his awesomeness now.

Track 2:

DOWNLOAD: Dan Deacon - The Crystal Cat (MP3)

Between his recorded output, and his much-talked-about crazy live shows, Dan is destined for great things - and it looks like it's happening sooner than later with this new album and the unbridled support of Pitchfork (whose festival he's playing in July). Stay true to the streets he may, but no doubt a headlining slot at Bowery Ballroom can't be far off (if he so chooses).

McCarren Pool to be a pool again

"The McCarren Park pool, built in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, in 1936 and closed in 1984, is one of 11 giant swimming pools built in the city as part of the Works Progress Administration. The pool, which could accommodate 6,800 bathers, will be reduced in size by about one third and reopened as an Olympic size pool. The work is budgeted at $50 million, and officials expect it to begin this summer and take a couple of years." [NY Times] (thx David)

White Stripes, Raconteurs, new music, Tour Dates

Icky Thump

The White Stripes' new single"Icky Thump" is available on iTunes now. The whole album called "Icky Thump" is out June 19th. The tour:

This summer The White Stripes will visit their neighbors in the “Great White North” as they embark on a tour of Canada that takes in all 10 provinces, as well as the Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories.

“Having never done a full tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog. We want to take this tour to the far reaches of the Canadian landscape. From the ocean to the permafrost. The best way for us to do that is ensure that we perform in every province and territory in the country, from the Yukon to Prince Edward Island. Another special moment of this tour is the show which will occur in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on July 14th, The White Stripes’ Tenth Anniversary” -Jack White

Following Canada, the band returns to the United States to play the first leg of the 16 states they have yet to visit during their career, as well as a limited number of performances in other markets, including New York City and Boston. Stay tuned for more confirmed dates and check out their complete routing by visiting the “shows” section.

The NYC dates is July 24th at Madison Square Garden. Big show.

And the Raconteurs are recording. Jack White is a busy guy...

The Raconteurs are in a Nashville recording studio working on the follow-up to their 2006 debut "Broken Boy Soldiers" and hope to have a new album out sometime next year.

The group, which features Jack White of the White Stripes, Brendan Benson, and Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler of The Greenhornes, has been recording at Blackbird Studio in Nashville for a week-and-a-half and currently has 12 songs written, White tells Billboard.com.

Calvin Johnson - 2007 Tour Dates

Calvin JohnsonCALVIN JOHNSON & THE SONS OF THE SOIL

In 2003, K recording artists Khaela Maricich (the Blow) and Jason Anderson had a vision. "What if Calvin Johnson played all his best songs from over the years, with a band of real music-making people?" This was their vision, and they decided to make it happen. Jason formed a band of other K music stalwarts that included Kyle Field (Little Wings) on bass with Adam Forkner (Yume Bitsu, VERSION) and Jason sharing the guitar and drum playing duties. Dubbed by Jason the Sons of the Soil, they set out to modernize the primitive. Khaela designed a graphic image that perfectly captured the Sons of the Soil's transcendental vibe. A tour was arranged that crossed paths with other fine Olympia types, including Rebecca Pearcy and Mirah. Songs were chosen that spanned the years and various combos, including songs originally recorded by Halo Benders ("Love Travels Faster"), Dub Narcotic Sound System ("Booty Run") and the Go Team ("Sand"). Rehearsals commenced, and then it was off across the Western United States for a rollicking, rockin' good time.

This album was recorded at the Dub Narcotic studio in July, 2003, immediately following their return to Olympia, Wash. It features a good cross section of the material from the tour and includes a few live snippets from the Sons of the Soil performance in Spokane, Wash.

Patrick Wolf adds NYC show -- last shows EVER? + the bleeding drummer pics (finally)

Who are you and why are you looking at me?
Patrick Wolf @ Misshapes

As previously reported, Patrick Wolf is playing Virgin Megastore in NYC, opening for Amy Winehouse on a few dates, and no longer works with his fuct up drummer. If you've been reading the Internet the past few days, you may also already know that Patrick left an emotional message in his own message board declaring that he is quitting music. He references the incident that went on with his drummer right here at Misshapes in NYC.

.....because my drummer was causing arguments within my road family, taking sedative drugs before an important show in a city i really love, so much so he could not play the music I wrote, the songs that I have survived on in the last six years... because I had to slap him to see if he was even CONSCIOUS on stage.... the fact that the only thing that got any reaction out his corpse happened to be made of metal.. because all of this.. does this make me seem like I was on cocaine, or on some power trip? I was pissed off because this was just one more musician or businessman taking my good nature and generosity for a ride... trust me, that moment onstage was the end of a long line of bad behaviour that it would unfair to go into in public. Yes I was drunk, but It was one oclock in the morning after seven hours of interviews.....
I was there that night, took a bunch of pictures (like the one above), and am now finally posting them all (in this post).

Will Patrick every play again? Who knows. Tickets are on sale for a May 9th show at Bowery Ballroom. It's the day after Patrick plays with Amy at the Highline.

Patrick's entire letter, the rest of the pictures, the full story, and all tour dates, below.....

Patrick Wolf @ Misshapes

dear all...
I should never have read this.. I really shouldn't.
I dont think when I was 16 and dreamt of releasing records there would ever
be so much crazy speculation about the person I am and that you want me to be.
I have become so tired of this behaviour, sometimes I wake up and have to do six hours
of interviews before doing a show, then go straight to bed to sleep a couple of hours
to fly to a new country to be cross examined in the same way.. I dont know what is left of
me sometimes, some mornings i dont know how i get on the flight or even open my mouth to sing that night. If I choose after working since the early hours of a day and then pouring my heart out for an hour and a half that I really have nothing left to give.. that I cannot be a fake politician and sign autographs for an hour.. does this make an asshole?
because my drummer was causing arguments within my road family, taking sedative drugs before an important show in a city i really love, so much so he could not play the music I wrote, the songs that I have survived on in the last six years... because I had to slap him to see if he was even CONSCIOUS on stage.... the fact that the only thing that got any reaction out his corpse happened to be made of metal.. because all of this.. does this make me seem like I was on cocaine, or on some power trip? I was pissed off because this was just one more musician or businessman taking my good nature and generosity for a ride... trust me, that moment onstage was the end of a long line of bad behaviour that it would unfair to go into in public. Yes I was drunk, but It was one oclock in the morning after seven hours of interviews.. i had been running on about four hours of sleep a night for about two weeks... such is the joy of promoting a record. Anyway, I was having FUN until that moment. So was the rest of my band until we realised my drummer was taking the piss out of all of us and our hard work. I dont work with liars and I dont work with thieves.

I dont want to have to share this information with you but so many seem so interested...

I have made a decision, my final concert will be this november, a retrospective with an orchestra in London. I am not sure wether there will be anymore public communications after that, Infact I am pretty sure there will be none. Of course, this has nothing to do with my drummer.. but a creative clock is ticking and I have many many projects to be creating with my time left on this earth. I hope to share my last shows with you this year.

I have enjoyed making and performing music for you all, I have enjoyed trying to give a little hope
and inspiration to the world. But I feel, especially when I read all this and I go about my days that I have failed.
Im not seeking sympathy or empathy, god, I have to go find something I love and am inspired by in this world again. Many of you will never know the amount of work and emotion that goes on behind the scenes for me and many of your other favourite artists or musicians and why should you? I wanted to give you disneyland.. I wanted to give you a world at the back of your wardrobe, now im just feel a fool for bothering.
I am in berlin today, i know I should never have read this, I dont know who any of you are, just strangers talking amongst themselves,
and I wish I was stronger minded today, but i have to take enough bullshit from other parts of the world for what I do and who I am without getting it from here.

Im going off for a walk now.. clear my heart and head. Thanks to all you with the intelligence to see past the superficial chaos of the media and the various ridiculous personalities and characters that have been painted around me over the years, the problem is, unfortunately many of you will never get to know the truth, but many will still speculate, and play chinese whispers with interviews and
opinions from the friend of a friend. This is nothing new to me, unfortunately, luckily I have always had a close set of dear friends that will always know me for who I really am, just as I do.

If I can give any advice, is, if anything, just listen to the music, watch the videos, read the lyrics, see the artwork, these are my communications, not others.

still love x patrick

Basically Patrick and band were playing a great show to a great crowd when suddenly I noticed Patrick telling his bandmates to make the drummer play. I looked over and the drummer was literally just nodding out over the drumset. Finally Patrick went up to him and started yelling at him - stuff like "I paid for your VISA. you asshole! You're drunk.". Then, or at the same time, Patrick started smashing the drums into his face and hitting him. The drummer probably couldn't even feel it. Security took the drummer off stage. Patrick apologized and continued the show.

A few songs later the drummer, with blood all over him, came back on stage to try and play again. Patrick demanded he leave, and swore that drummer would never play with him again.

Rumors were circulating that the drummer had been shooting up in the basement, and blood was still dripping from his arm. I'm not sure that's true, but it did look like he was on heroin. The blood came from the drums smashing into his face I think.

I saw Patrick's 'people' put the drummer in a cab at the end of the night - he could still barely stand. They told the cab driver what hotel to drop him off at (I was a little worried how that was going to end up).

Fun show all around.

'Free' ALBERT HAMMOND JR show, diary & Tour Dates

Albert Hammond Jr

Albert Hammond Jr. is keeping a tour diary at MySpace. I'm not sure if Albert himself is writing it though...

...After the Bloc Party dates, we had a couple, how can I put it, exciting, events lined up. Two notable examples are our first show at NYC's very own The Bowery Ballroom and a performance on NYC's very own Late Night with Conan O'Brian, the television show.

Despite the fact that the Bowery show took place on Passover, as in the Jewish holiday of, the night was a smashing success. At least the parts I can remember. Personally, I had to haul ass from my grandma's house in Brighton Beach to get there just in time to play tambourine during one of Mooney Suzuki's songs….stole the show, of course. Burglarized it, even. Borrowed it perhaps. Gave it back. We warmed up by belting out Beatles Tunes that Steve figured out on the fly. What an ear that man has. We were joined by Reno Bo for some harmonies on Help! During the show, someone kept throwing dollar bills on stage. Albert seemed confused, whereas I used the two I picked up to get uptown the next morning.... [MySpace]

RSVP to see Albert & band for 'free' at Hiro Ballroom on Thursday May 10th. I put 'free' in quotes because many were forced to pay at the 'free' Patrick Wolf show. All Albert Hammond dates below...

The Long Blondes

I don't know why, but I keep getting The Long Blondes (UK) confused with The Shout Out Louds (Sweden) in my head. One isn't liked much by Jarvis, and the other just signed to Merge. Glenn Mercer (Feelies) playing Magnetic Field & Maxwell's

Glenn MercerGlenn Mercer of The Feelies has a solo album coming out (Wheels in Motion) soon on Pravada Records.

The record features performances by ex-Feelies: Stan Demeski, Vinny DeNunzio, Dave Weckerman, Anton Fier, and Brenda Sauter.

Speaking about the recording, Glenn says: "The record is a very personal and intimate reflection on where I am, where I've been and where I'm going. The best part of the project was the opportunity to re-unite with a few old friends to play music. When I wrote and recorded the songs, I wanted the interplay between the guitar and vocal to be the main focus, building the track from that point."

Check out the songs streaming on his MySpace.

See Glenn this Saturday 4/28 at Magnetic Field in Brooklyn with fellow-ex-Feelie Brenda Sauter's band Wild Carnation, or wait for Glenn's June 23rd show at Maxwell's in Hoboken.

Something like this happened last year in Hoboken too.

Leonard Cohen & Anjani @ Joe's Pub, NYC - pics

Anjani played two shows at Joe's Pub in NYC last night (Tuesday, April 24, 2007). I was at the earlier one, which was also the one that was billed as "Leonard Cohen presents".

It was known that Leonard would be there, and even that he would probably introduce Anjani - his protégé who was singing songs they wrote and recorded together - but nobody was quite sure if Leonard himself would actually get up and sing. Ends up he did.....

Leonard Cohen & Anjani @ Joe's Pub

Anjani had a few moments, but mostly I wasn't that into her music - kind of smooth jazzy. The show was more than worth it though - to not only first hear Leonard Cohen speak, but then hear (and watch) him sing two songs with Anjani - and in such an intimate setting. It was pretty awesome, exciting, etc.... More pics below....

Leonard Cohen & Anjani @ Joe's Pub

Cohen's new book of poetry and drawings, Book of Longing, was published in May 2006; in March a Toronto-based retailer offered signed copies to the first 1500 orders placed online, which saw the entire amount sold within hours. The book quickly topped bestseller lists in Canada. On May 13, 2006, Cohen made his first public appearance for thirteen years, at an in store event at a bookstore in Toronto. Approximately 3000 people turned up for the event, causing the streets surrounding the bookstore to be closed. He sang two of his earliest and best-known songs: "So Long, Marianne" and "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye", accompanied by the Barenaked Ladies and Ron Sexsmith. Also appearing with him was Anjani, the two promoting her new CD, along with his book.[8] Cohen's new album meanwhile is also slated for late 2007, while rumors of a tour, his first after 1993, remain unconfirmed. Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, and Philip Glass were among those in attendance.

Leonard mentioned Neil Sedaka in his introduction - something about 'many people have played this stage'...like Neil Sedaka. Neil Sedaka did in fact play on that stage - just an hour earlier. He left before the Leonard show though. Fountains of Wayne also played that stage - with Neil for one song. Then they left to go play their show with Robbers on High Street at Webster Hall.

Three of Leonard's albums were just re-mastered and re-issued. Anjani's album is out now too.

John Vanderslice interviews St. Vincent (on the road)

Peter Hughes, John Vanderslice & Matthew Caws @ Union Hall *
John Vanderslice @ Union Hall

St Vincent

If you were at the John Vanderslice / St. Vincent (Annie Clark) show Sunday night at Union Hall, you witnessed (and heard) an awesome two performances that included Peter Hughes from the Mountain Goats, Matthew Caws from Nada Surf, and Annie all joining John on stage for various songs including a finale where John and Annie sang real-quiet-and-beautiful-like in the center of the audience. You also heard John promise everyone an interview he conducted with Annie. He probably did it in a venue, or in the tour van, or at a Denny's/Cracker Barrel/Waffle House, or maybe at a gas station, or....

That interview, and more pictures from the show, below....

JOHN VANDERSLICE: Okay what would you rather do: drive 8 hours to a show and stay at a Four Seasons hotel or 1 hour and stay at a Red Roof Inn.

ANNIE CLARK: Do I have to do the driving or can I be a passenger? Who am I kidding? Either way, Four Seasons. Four sure.

Do you like pinball?

The pinball wizard?! Yes! Is this free association?

Do you believe Syria is making supernotes (counterfeit $100 bills)?

Did I hear about it on Fox News? Then, yes. It is unequivocally so.Consequently, how do I get my hands on some of these?

Do you like the TV show "Extras"?

The one episode I saw was really endearing. Ricky Gervais is a peach.

Should all drugs be decriminalized in the US?

Consensual crime? What were we thinking giving people autonomy over their bodies? Just kidding…the drug issue is hard to separate from a class issue, an education issue, a wonky foreign policy issue, and a race issue. What I do know is, be it caffeine, alcohol, cocaine, or adrenaline, let's face it: people like to get high. From Starbucks to Budweiser to your own brain, everybody's a pusher these days. If I could substitute another drug to be consumed in the country as much as alcohol is, it would be helium from children's birthday party balloons. Try not laughing when someone sounds like a chipmunk!

Do you like to line dance?

Is this because I'm from Texas? Low blow, JV. Low blow…

Should GW Bush be prosecuted for war crimes or just straight up stoned to death?

Remember, he who casts the first stone…stops another war with Iran. My great uncle was one of the lead prosecutors of the Nazis at Nuremburg. He had a book of photographs of executed war criminals, which proudly kept it on his coffee table. Growing up, we all thought was a pretty macabre distraction from the episodes of "Matlock" or "Macgyver" we were trying to watch.

Do you look forward to going to the car wash?

I do! I was told as a child that the water on the windshield was actually little magical water mice running around cleaning the car at warp speed. Adults are liars.

Please tell me one thing about yourself that you try to avoid telling people in interviews (for me, it's my intense addiction to NBA basketball)

I can do an impeccable Eddie Vedder impression. It's as gorgeous as it is grotesque.

A new career in a new town: because of trouble with the law, Annie Clark has to move to a new country and be an under-the-radar wage earner. where do you go and what do you do?

Can I time travel too? If not, I'll go to Galicia, Spain and be the most squeamish midwife ever (un)known.

Negative Approach playing Brooklyn, Detroit, Belgium - The Superbowl of Hardcore

"Negative Approach (commonly called “NA”) were one of the first hardcore punk bands. They are considered one of the pioneers of this genre, along with bands like Minor Threat, Bad Brains and Black Flag. Like most hardcore bands, they were almost completely unknown in their day. They are now idolized in hardcore subculture, considered to be one of the elite bands of the 'old school' era, and continue to be a very influential band." [Wikipedia]

Negative Approach

"It was announced in May 2006 that Brannon and Moore would play a Negative Approach reunion show, of sorts, for Touch & Go's 25th Anniversary show on September 9, 2006, as well as two later shows in the UK - London on December 7 and at All Tomorrow's Parties on December 10. Despite repeated efforts by Rob and Graham McCulloch to be a part of the reunion and have the classic NA lineup play, John refused; it was instead announced that Harold Richardson (of Brannon's current band Easy Action) and Ron Sakowski (formerly of Easy Action, Laughing Hyenas, and Necros) would complete the lineup. Rob and Graham maintain that the appearance shouldn't be labeled as Negative Approach without the classic NA lineup. The whole affair has generated considerable controversy, and there is little agreement as to exactly who is in the right and for what reasons" [Wikipedia]

The "reunion" continues. Details below....

Superbowl of Hardcore

Negative Approach - 2007 Tour Dates
May 12 - Hof ter Lo Antwerp, Belgium
May 19 - Studio B Brooklyn, New York (Superbowl of Hardcore) w/ H2O

Largehearted Boy's Interesting CD Releases This Week

The Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys release their sophomore effort, Favourite Worst Nightmare, this week, but most of the buzz seems to have been aimed at a pair of covers albums, Patti Smith's Twelve and A Tribute to Joni Mitchell.

I am definitely picking up the three Leonard Cohen remasters: Songs from a Room, Songs of Leonard Cohen, and Songs of Love and Hate.

Of the remaining discs, I can wholly recommend the Joanna Newsom EP, Bill Callahan's Woke On A Whaleheart, Future Clouds & Radar's self-titled debut, Thee More Shallows' Book Of Bad Breaks, and Golden Smog's Blood on the Slacks.

What new music releases you recommend this week?

The Pipettes, Daniel Johnston & Perez Hilton

The Pipettes are playing Highline Ballroom in NYC on June 5th. Tickets are on sale. Daniel Johnston's May 16th show at the Highline Ballroom is sold out, but tickets are now on sale for a second show on May 15th at Warsaw in Brooklyn.

Last time the Pipettes were visiting the States, they got to meet Perez Hilton.

Perez Hilton and the Pipettes

According to a news item on their website, the Pipettes were very honored to be written about by Perez:

Also were honored with a mention on PerezHilton.com! [The Pipettes' official website]
...though their MySpace blog entry is a little more cynical:
The girls met Perez Hilton, whom I've heard a lot about, though I think the girls were less overwhelmed by his presence than our manager and tour manager, he seemed a really cool guy though, great pink hair. [The Pipettes' MySpace]
I wonder if Perez would ever want to hang out with Daniel Johnston.

They could talk about if Daniel meant what he said or not.

Jarvis played Webster -- Damon says no more Gorillaz

Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker played his first of two solo shows at Webster Hall in NYC last night. How was it? Who opened? It surely wasn't The Long Blondes or Little Man Tate. Any duets with Beth Ditto?

In other news, Blur frontman Damon Albarn says 'no more Gorillaz albums'.

The Blur singer said that the only project left for the cartoon band will be a film featuring a score composition, that has previously been linked to filmmaker and Monty Python mastermind Terry Gilliam.
Damon's other band The Good The Bad and The Queen played Webster Hall back in March. Jarvis and Damon are both playing Coachella later this week.

I'd say the first half of the show was good, and the second half of the show was GREAT.

Bjork - SNL & 'Earth Intruders' video

Did you see Bjork on Saturday Night Live? One of the songs she played was 'Earth Intruders'. The video of the performance is not up on YouTube yet, so here's the official one instead..

"Earth Intruders" on SNL....

"Wanderlust" on SNL...

The official video for "Earth Intruders" was removed from YouTube by Warner Brothers. I think it was a leak. 'Innocence' is streaming at MySpace. Make your own video.

"I had a throat problem that day and 5 minutes later 'earth intruders' was ready ." [Bjork]
