Cocorosie vs. Pitchfork vs. Antony & John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats) ++ Farm Sanctuary

DOWNLOAD: Cocorosie - Rainbowarriors (MP3)

Antony & Cocorosie

Cocorosie has always been a polarizing force - not as love-them-or-hate-them as their friends Antony, Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart, but definitely a band that generates a lot of disdain among music fans. This is especially true in the U.S. In Europe, especially France, they seem to more often adore Cocorosie. When I saw Cocorosie open for Antony in French-speaking Montreal, the crowd even gave the Cocorosie Cassady sisters an amazing reception - something I wasn't used to as a New Yorker. U.S. music fans are more likely to use words 'art school' and 'pretentious' when describing Cocorosie. The Cassady sisters don't help the matter by aligning themselves with the controversial Williamsburg, Brooklyn "Pumpsta" scene.

I'm personally somewhere in the middle. I kind of have/had a fetish for all things Antony-Devendra-Cocorosie-Newsom - the extremity of it has worn off a little, but I still support most of Cocorosie's endeavors - I play their music on my Sirius radio show, regularly post their tour dates, and am quick to explore anything else they have going on like their record label & store Voodoo-EROS, and their side project Metallic Falcons. I enjoy their music, but don't often find myself listening to their albums. I am not offended by their live shows, but sometimes do wonder how authentic they are. Overall I am more FOR them than against them. Sometimes that makes me feel alone - especially among those closest to me. ha.

Pitchfork was sort of on Cocorosie's side when Sam Ubl gave their 2004 Touch & Go debut La Maison de Mon Reve a 6.9. Sam was much less kind in 2005 when the score for Noah's Ark came in at a 3.4, and now - for their brand new album The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn - an album Drowned in Sound called "a sure contender for album of the year" - Cocorosie received a lowly 2.3.

...Too bad it seems as if the more self-impressed CocoRosie sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady get about transcending genres, the less patience they have for mere mortal concerns like, um, songs. True, Ghosthorse and Stillborn begins with CocoRosie at their most radio-ready, on single "Rainbowarriors" (MP3 above), where Bianca speak-sings impishly about finding "the rainbow trail that's deep inside ya" over beatbox schmaltz. It's something like Vitamin C's 1999 Top 40 hit "Graduation (Friends Forever)", only with neighing horses, buzzing synths, and Sierra's operatic soprano instead of Pachelbel-derived orchestral Radio Disney pomp/circumstance....
On the other hand, Joanna, Devendra, and Antony and his Johnsons have all received the "Best New Music" title at least once. I'm not implying there's anything more to this than Pitchfork's honest assessment of all albums involved (feel free to in the comments though). I'm really just setting the background for what came next....

Antony is mad

I have a musical crush on Antony, but, factual errors aside, I don't believe any musician should ever take on a critic. Where's it going to get you? You'll always look bad except to your most die-hard fans.

I'm also not sure if it is ethical to publish (theoretically) private letters on a blog. I'm not sure if it's even allowed - especially if the letters were written to and/or on behalf of your employer (is it OK Gawker?).

That said, I considered not posting this at all. Honestly, I'm not sure why Marc Hogan was allowed to post letters from Antony to Pitchfork on his personal blog....

dear Ryan Schreiber

I am writing in regards to the very unpleasant review of Cocorosie's new album that was printed in yesterday's Pitchfork.

I was bitterly disappointed when I read it. It was filled with inaccuracies. For instance, I do not even appear on the record, and yet Hogan snidely referred to a guest appearance he somehow imagined I had made.

But It is an album I would have been proud to be a part of. Please assign writers who are open and receptive to understanding the work of America's more challenging young artists, instead of printing reviews that try to cover up their lack of comprehension with bad wit and cynical one-upmanship. We desperately need artists who will take risks and put their hearts forward in this cultural climate, now more than ever. Why would you print a review that only seeks to oppress performers who are among those taking some of the biggest and most generous risks?

Please assign writers with some sense of vision to review Cocorosies work in the future. Marc Hogan, a financial analyst (!!), is completely in the dark about Cocorosie; he cannot even fathom their intent or the usefulness, the generosity, and the deep originality of their work. I remember the Pitchfork review of their last album in which the writer even admitted that he was panning the album simply because he didnt understand it. Cocorosie are a brave pair of visionary young Americans who are pushing the dialogue forward. They are treasured by their peers, many of whom are artists that you have written about with respect, and by audiences around the world. We all read Pitchfork, and rely on it as an important outlet of information for independent artists. Please rise to the challenge and represent Cocorosie fairly, instead of publishing checklists of incomprehension that are tinged with misogynist resentment.

I did send an email that was a little hot under the collar to Marc Hogan, which should be laughed at and disregarded. I send this now to you now in all earnestness.

yours sincerely

Antony Hegarty

The other letters, and Marc Hogan's thoughts on on this matter, at his personal blog.

BUT WAIT? What does this post have to do with the wombat-loving Mountain Goats (aka John Darnielle)?

John Darnielle

WELL, as we already knew, John - owner of "one of the best music blogs on the interblock" according to Pitchfork - LOVES Cocorosie. He loved them in 2006. He loves them in 2007 - John recently blogged:

....Still. Objections constitute dialogue; Lou Reed used to know this & it's why he owned the seventies. The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn is my favorite album of the year so far. At its lyrical best, it inhabits its own country, unashamed of real poetry and willing to put in the hard work necessary to inhabit a space unlike anybody else's.
Take that 2.3.

Now let's all love one another..

I love John because of the following awesome upcoming shows:

05-05 Chapel Hill, NC - Local 506
05-11 Brooklyn, NY - Sound Fix (in-store) (John Darnielle solo) **
06-16 Watkins Glen, NY - Farm Sanctuary (John Darnielle solo) (info) *
06-17 Watkins Glen, NY - Farm Sanctuary (John Darnielle solo) (info)*
06-20 Chicago, IL - Metro (Eff Cancer Benefit) #

** with Nothing Painted Blue's Franklin Bruno AKA an Extra Glenns reunion
* with Peter Hughes, Perry Wright
# with Superchunk

I love Antony for playing with Bjork.

goat

I love Farm Sanctuary for being one of the coolest, most compassionate places anywhere. Go there to see The Mountain Goats - the John Darnielle ones (see dates above), and the real ones (actual goat at Farm Sanctuary pictured above). Go there to pet pigs (the pigs are seriously one of the highlights). Go there to spend a night out of the city. They serve vegan breakfast.

More pics of Antony & CocoRosie - like those you see above - here.

Duran Duran & Sage Francis playing special NYC shows

Yeah Yeah Yeahs aren't the only ones that just announced a very special NYC show. Sage Francis plays a free acoustic one this Saturday, and Duran Duran is playing one that requires getting tickets this weekend. Details below....

Sage Francis

SAGE

Rapper/Poet Sage Francis To Perform Free NYC Acoustic Show May 5th

Intimate Gig This Saturday To Celebrate Exhibition By Rising ArtistInkymole Human The Death Dance Out Tuesday, May 8th

Sage Francis - poet, activist, humorist and cultural provocateur - willperform a free, 300 capacity show this Saturday (May 5) at ChelseaMarket's Old Portico Space at 6 p.m. Open to the public, the first-come,first-serve acoustic performance with guitarist Tom Inhaler precedes Tuesday's (May 8th) release of Francis' hotly anticipated Anti-/Epitaphdisc, Human The Death Dance and will feature a special guest appearance by Def Poetry Jam's Taylor Mali and Bernard Dolan as "Evel Kneviel."

The event is in celebration of "If A Girl Writes Off The World,"the ongoing Stateside debut exhibition of British illustrator and lettering artist Inkymole which wraps May 7th. Born Sarah Coleman, Inkymole's project was inspired by the world-renowned rapper. With their mutual respect and appreciation in place, Sage wound up asking Inkymole to create artwork for Human The Death Dance. "I couldn't wait," Coleman says, "but I was suddenly terrified of this new client I was also a mad fan of." The resulting album art will be in tow at the nyc exhibition. In a 5-star review of the disc, URB writes, "Teeming with the kind ofpersonality a live show begs for, Human the Death Dance comprises of 16tracks that prove Sage can still spit that wry wit," adding, "its trackswork together to form a cohesive, incredibly personal whole." In a related note, Francis' stellar new video, "Got Up This Morning" featuring performance by Jolie Holland and cameos from Brother Ali, Slugfrom Atmosphere and Buck 65 can be seen here:

Despite what it says on Bjork's website and I in turn posted, Konono N°1 are not opening for Bjork at the Apollo Theater. Mudderfukin Spank Rock is instead. Awesome, and not surprising. Konono is still opening at United Palace.

Speaking of Mudderfukin, tickets are on sale for The Faint show at Webster Hall.

Cornelius is touring. He gets to NYC on May 10th. I caught him this weekend at Coachella (hence the reason for no dance post last week). Here's a picture of his show in LA on Monday...

I'm going to geek out on Bjork too.

Wow. What an amazing show last night. After seeing her at Coachella and last night, I really hope that crunchy dance version of "Declare Independence" she rocks at the end of her set gets a proper release. "Raise Your Flag!" would go down well in the clubs. Speaking of da clubs, Spank Rock (who destroyed Coachella on Sunday night) remixed "Earth Intruders."

Zeitgeist: DANCE? Can You Feel It?

Larry TeeLarry Tee in this week's Village Voice:

"Dance music finally has an opportunity. It's kind of hot. I sense something is changing here."
Tricia Romano delves into the comings and goings of the fight against the Caberet Law, Larry Tee's proposed "Dance Music Invasion Festival" in NYC October 3rd through 7th, and the Dance Parade on May 19th (partly to protest the Caberet Law, partly to showcase dance (as in the act of)). Dance illegally this weekend: declare your independence.

Speaking of legality, the recent decision by the FCC's Copyright Royalty Board of Royalty Oversight, Discussion, and Redundancy that hiked up fees for internet broadcasters is being challenged by the SaveNetRadio organization. Internet radio is a crucial promotion vehicle for dance music. Go there and read up. Call your congressperson.

MobyMoby is kicking the dust off his stack of "Go" remixes and playing an old school rave set for the Cut & Trouble + Bass crews at the Masters of the Universe party at Studio B on Saturday (May 5th) night. Wear a mask and rave out. Other techno legends dropping through town this weekend: Sven Vath at Cielo tonight (Thursday May 3rd) and Juan Atkins at Sullivan Room Saturday (May 5th) (Tix).

Lots of Justice news this week. After a wild live set at Coachella that featured 45 minutes of cut, chopped, and fuzzed originals and pieces of their remixes, all performed from a Marshall stack stage. The boys have released their video for their massive next single "D.A.N.C.E." Its basically a pretty amazing ad for So Me's work with the Revolver clothing line. If this song isn't on every radio station this summer, I'd be very surprised. All of you PYTs make sure to kick the B.E.A.T. loud. Possibly one of the most anticipated dance albums of the past few years, Justice's † is out on Vice SOMETIME soon?

St. Vincent interviews John Vanderslice (on the road)

Last time Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and John Vanderslice checked in, it was John interviewing Annie. This time around Annie asked John some questions....

John & Annie in Chicago - Apr 13, 2007 (CRED)
John Vanderslice & Annie Clark

Annie Clark: This first part is free association: "the banality of evil":
John Vanderslice: is perfectly understandable

AC: "Keith Richards"
JV: doesn't live by our/your morals.

AC: Complete this phrase: "Out of ____, out of ____."
JV: "Out of Mind, Out of Sight." A crucial Buffy episode (SE1, EP11) in which Angel rescues the Scoobies. It changed my life.

AC: 1984 was a pivotal year for us all. What were you doing and, more importantly, what were you wearing this year?
JV: Well I clearly remember wearing dolphin shorts and an "Ocean City, MD" tank top that summer. I was mowing lawns! And definitely stoned.

AC: In what ways has your relationship with food evolved as you've gotten older?
JV: Well , I worked for 5 years in at Chez Panisse in Berkeley. I got VERY spoiled. I eat very simple food now.

AC: You've made an open call for guest vocalists and bassists this tour. Explain how you are coping with this giant act of surrender.
JV: I started having a lot of concerns about the flow of the show, whether it would work or not. Now I've learned to embrace the anarchy...It's the best part of the show for me now.

AC: Rank these modern world leaders from most nefarious to slightly less nefarious: Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, G.W. Bush, Charles Taylor, President Bashir, (also, feel free include the many I've overlooked.)
JV: Annie!! I like your style.
Stalin
Hitler
GW Bush
Pol Pot
Charles Taylor
President Bashir
All these guys are fucked up, but some are boosted to the top by access to money, armaments, time of tenure, and strength of opposition. This is a VERY subjective list.

AC: True or False: You sometimes eat from the bowl of mixed nuts that has been sitting in the dressing room all day/night.
JV: True, that's not something I get hung up on. But if someone sneezes near me I will transform into Larry David.

AC: True or False: G.G. Allin had a profound effect on your music career.
JV: False, but anyone pushing limits is bound to free up everyone else in some way.

The tour is almost over - just a few days left:

May 6 - Emo's Austin, Texas

FUJIYA & MIYAGI - 2007 Tour Dates - PETER BJORN & JOHN - Webster Hall - AU REVOIR SIMONE - SXSW pics

DOWNLOAD: Peter Bjorn & John live on MPR @ SXSW (MP3) (info)

Bjorn, backdrop, bass amp & bass drum @ Webster Hall - May 1, 2007 (CRED)
Peter Bjorn & John @ WEbster Hall

I'm embarrassed to admit that I saw Peter Bjorn and John for the sixth time (Union Hall, Mercury, Bowery, SXSW, SXSW, Webster Hall) last night (May 1, 2007). Last night was the first time I saw a full set since Bowery though. They were okay - it's always been pretty much the same set - this time they had a new set of jokes - seriously they integrate comedy into the show a lot. I wouldn't say they should stop playing it - I just need to stop seeing them.

The two times I saw them at SXSW were at an MPR radio taping (totally accidentally - I was walking by early in the morning on the way to my own day show and it was just about to start), and at the Pitchfork thing (didn't watch their whole set there though).

COOLEST THING THAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT: Au Revoir Simone opened, and then Heather from Au Revoir Simone came back to sing Victoria Bergsman's part in Young Folks

Heather
Au Revoir Simone

SECOND COOLEST THING: Fujiya & Miyagi opened. Actually that may have been the coolest/best/greatest thing. I love them - and they were definitely the deciding factor that got me to Webster Hall last night. They in turn, did not disappoint.

Fujiya & Miyagi

NOTE: Au Revoir Simone, Fujiya & Miyagi, and Peter Bjorn & John are all trios. Peter pointed that out.

All three bands do it again at Webster Hall tonight (May 2). Fujiya & Miyagi are playing a free show at South Street Seaport on July 6th. Au Revoir Simone are playing the Seaport on August 10th, AND playing Webster Hall again with Voxtrot.

Konono No 1 opening five Bjork shows, playing Bowery Ballroom, playing thumb pianos

DOWNLOAD: a taste of Konono N°1 (MP3)

Konono No 1

Bjork is here! Konono N°1 are here! NYC is glowing. From Our Bjork interview:

Will Antony be around to join you at your three upcoming NYC shows at Radio City, Apollo Theater, and United Palace? In fact, who (and what) can we expect to see at those performances?. I know that Konono No1 (another Volta collaborator) are playing a show in NYC during the first week of May. Can I assume that was coordinated with you?

It was a coincidence !! Not coordinated . Not sure exactly what will happen but i have asked both groups to join though . We´ll see ... ? I have been rehearsing with my band in iceland . It is 10 brass girls ( icelandic ) jónas sen on keyboards , mark bell and damian taylor on electronics and chris corsano on drums .

Cearly Konono said yes - they will open all three of Bjork's NYC shows + Chicago and Vancouver. I'm sure we can expect some thumb piano action during Bjork's set as well. Joanna Newsom is opening for Bjork in Denver and San Francisco. Maybe those guys will get some guest harp.

Tickets are STILL on sale for Konono's show at Bowery Ballroom on May 5th. It's the same night as their show with Bjork at United Palace. They're amazingly playing both - long commute.

BAD BRAINS on a boat, new album - BEASTIE BOYS too & 2007 Tour Dates

I'm as conflicted as you, but that was then, and this is now (?)...

Bad Brains & Beastie Boys

New York NY -- March 2, 2007 -- Megaforce Records is proud to announce it has entered into a worldwide deal with the legendary punk band Bad Brains. The new album (Build A Nation) is currently being finished in New York and will be released worldwide this spring 2007 (June 26th). Adam Yauch (MCA of the Beastie Boys) produced the yet-to-be-titled Bad Brains album and it represents the first recording, aside from Beastie Boys' recordings, from the Oscilloscope laboratories and studio. The Bad Brains recently honored the legendary punk club CBGB's closing in 2006 by performing three shows, which sold-out in record time.

"The Brains are one of most powerful and unique bands in the world. They have been a huge influence on me, and it was an honor to work with them on this record," comments Adam Yauch.

Bad Brains are playing on a boat in NYC on June 25th (a Rocks Off cruise I assume) - kind of insane. They're playing the School of Rock Fest in NJ the day before.

They and the Beastie Boys are also playing the Sasquatch Festival and the Virgin Festival in Baltimore. More tour dates and pictures below.....

Bad Brains & Beastie Boy in the studio
Bad Brains & Beastie Boys

"This album started in my studio with primal, classic Bad Brains intentions,” commented bassist Darryl Jenifer. "I told Adam I was thinking about a new Brains' record, then Adam said 'Word! You should let me produce that shit, son! I'll smoke those other cats that tried to produce y'all. I'll make you sound real!' I said 'Word!' And the rest is history,” continued Jenifer. “Adam took it in a direction that captured the S/T vibe, but with an honest, modern touch.”

Yo La Tengo played Webster Hall, playing 24 hr Bang on a Can Marathon

How was the Webster Hall show? How was the NYU thing? How were the Books at Worldless Music Series?

Yo La Tengo @ Webster Hall, NYC - Apr 29, 2007 (CRED)
Yo La Tengo @ Webster Hall

This year's Bang on a Can Marathon at the World Financial Center is going to run for 24 Hours (Saturday, June 2, 8pm-Sunday, June 3, 10pm)! Performers include Yo La Tengo, The Books, Clogs, Dalek, Yo La Tengo, the Bang on a Can All Stars, and many, many more. Details below....

Bang on a Can Presents its First Ever 24+ HOUR MARATHON June 2-3, 2007

Classical, Electronica, Jazz & Indie-Rock Stars From Around the World Will Converge at The World Financial Center
For a 24-Hour Music Festival

“Bang on a Can’s ‘Marathon’—imagine Lollapalooza advised by the ghost of John Cage—is a free-wheeling parade of the strange, the raucous, and the beautiful…There are other places to hear contemporary music, but it is seldom offered with such a potent blend of intensity, authority, and abandon.”—Vanity Fair

On Saturday, June 2, Bang on a Can will bring its legendary eclectic global music fest back to New York City for the first ever 24+ hour Marathon co-presented by the River to River Festival and World Financial Center Arts & Events, beginning at 8pm Saturday, June 2, and ending at 10pm Sunday, June 3.

Bring your sleeping bag! For more than 24 hours, the 2007 Marathon will take over the World Financial Center’s Winter Garden with a collection of adventurous performers and composers from classical minimalism and Balinese gamelan to alt-jazz, fringe-rock, and techno. The Marathon is still FREE—listeners can come and go as they like or stay all night.

This year will be an even more impressive collection of the most innovative and experimental musicians from across the globe and musical spectrum. The Marathon kicks off at sunset with Julia Wolfe's new creation for Bagpipe Orchestra. Then you’ll hear indie-phenoms, The Books, Argentine singer-songwriter Juana Molina, Burmese Drum Circle master Kyaw Kyaw Naing, high-octane quartet Ethel, and brilliant jazz pianist Vijay Iyer. At midnight, Bang on a Can All-Stars will give a rare live performance of Brian Eno's ambient classic “Music for Airports.” Stay late to hear the music of Russian mystic Galina Ustvolskaya and Michael Gordon's orchestral New York tribute “Gotham,” with film by decayed film stock pioneer Bill Morrison. Bring in the sunrise with Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians” and morning ragas featuring Indian violinist Milind Raikar in his New York debut. Check out the sonic power of Lois V Vierk, the jaw-dropping virtuosity of Eighth Blackbird, JG Thirlwell’s ambient post-classical band Manorexia, a lush world premiere by American master Alvin Lucier, Evan Ziporyn’s newest orchestral tour de force, the Hartt Bass Band, and many more. The show will wrap-up on Sunday afternoon and evening with the tuneful and explosive World Saxophone Quartet, the haunting avant-Czech folk music of Iva Bittová, famed inide rockers Yo La Tengo and a stunning performance by trombone wizard Mike Svoboda of David Lang's MEN with the premiere of video by art world sensation Matt Mullican.

The original Bang on a Can Marathon was founded in 1987 by composers Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe, and David Lang, as a 12-hour concert in a small SoHo art gallery. Bang on a Can has since grown into a multi-faceted institution becoming one of the most significant forces in the U.S.’s new music scene. All along, though, the annual Marathon has remained at the heart of what Bang on a Can is and does—presenting a vast array of genre-defying music from innovative composers and performed by dynamic players, to a curious and excitable audience. Over the course of 20 years, the Marathon has grown and moved from small Downtown art galleries to world-class performance venues, while still remaining as informal, accessible, and experimental as the day it began. Nearly 1,000 pieces, more than 500 performers, and over 200 composers later, the Bang on a Can Marathon is still the foremost concert of its kind, drawing thousands of concert-goers to each event.

See following page for a complete list of performers and composers.

The rumor was that Sonic Youth would be performing Daydream Nation in Prospect Park in August. The reality is (pretty close)....

Sonic Youth are excited to announce a NYC performance of the Daydream Nation album: July 28 at the McCarren Park Pool in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Presale Tickets available May 2 at 10AM Eastern. Public Tickets onsale Friday May 4 at noon Eastern. Additional Daydream Nation performances in the USA include July 13 at the Pitchfork Music Festival, on July 19 at the Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley, CA and July 20 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
Will a second date be added? Last year they played two shows there, and that wasn't Daydream Nation, but it was with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.(thx Ondal)

Sound Fix Cafe re-opening with Mountain Goats show

Mountain Goats & Wombat

From Sound Fix in Brooklyn.

A long time in the making, the Sound Fix Cafe is finally set to reopen its doors on Friday night, May 11, and we're going to kick things off with a super bang when John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats comes to town for a special, one-night in-store performance! The new cafe will be practically unrecognizable from the old one, with a new bar, stage and sound system as well as new floors, lighting and furniture. Nearly three years ago to the day, Darnielle played at the opening of the Sound Fix record shop; now he will be on hand to usher in this exciting new phase of the Williamsburg cafe/bar/record store.
The Cafe was orginally supposed to re-open on April 26th with an appearance by Deerhunter. The Mountain Goats are also playing May 5th at Local 506 in Chapel Hill, NC.

My email is now only GMAIL

Please no longer email me at my hotmail email address. I have the same exact email address as before, but it's gmail.com instead of hotmail.com. PLEASE change it in your address books or wherever immediately. I've been slowly switching over the past few months, but now hotmail is completely 100% broken and screwed up (@$#$@#@! Microsoft), so it's an emergency. Thanks!!!

CSS meet Paris Hilton & Courtney Love @ Coachella

Written 3 years ago?.....

Happened 1 day ago.....

Paris Hilton & CSS @ Coachella

"...Post show we could all just relax–had an amazing time at the CSS show where both Peaches and Paris Hilton were shimmying around. They were hilarious in the best way (CSS that is)......After that we went to see Air who it seems never showed up. Well they were a half hour late by the time we threw our hands up to the air (yuk yuk) and left. Earlier in the evening a funny thing happened to the ladies and man of CSS. Out of nowhere with an authoritative strut Courtney Love appeared in the artist area and barged into the CSS trailer. At that point I assume she’s a fan and I continue on my merry way to get some water and meet up with the band. Little did I know she was just was looking for shelter and picked the closest trailer. Apparently she came in, said 'I need this trailer' and asked 'Who are you?' CSS proceeded to explain. She looked bewildered and left soon after." [Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear for Rolling Stone]
Tickets are still on sale for CSS' show at Irving Plaza (Fillmore) on June 1st. More photos below....

6:25 p.m.: Brazil is so often celebrated for its musical sophistication that it’s sometimes difficult to imagine it has amateurish punk bands too. CSS is proof. The sextet carves out simple hooks from barebones metal and disco, and sprinkles them with pop-culture references that sound passably charming in broken English. [Chicago Tribune]

'Pretend We're Dead' as performed by CSS was a cool moment. Prior to starting the song the lead singer said 'This is a Daft Punk cover,' only to launch into the L7 song. I love Brazilians. [A day in the life of]

I am anxious to hear the box set The Time Has Come from British folk rock pioneers Pentangle (Bert Jansch's early band).

"Rage Against The Machine played its first show in seven years last night (April 29) to close the 2007 edition of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. The foursome tore into staples like "Testify," "Bulls on Parade," "People of the Sun" and "Guerrilla Radio" to one of the largest main stage crowds in the event's history." [Billboard]

"The only time de la Rocha broke the fourth wall was to give everyone what they wanted- a deliberate and forthright rebuttal to the last six years of neocon politics. “This administration should be tried, hung and shot,” he said, as if one form of execution wasn't enough. It may have been ham-fisted, but to hear it from the mouth of a rock singer today, de la Rocha may well have set the dam loose for political music at the tail end of the Bush era. Even if he didn’t though, the spectacle of 60,000 fans pounding their fists in unison closer “Killing In The Name Of ” was a reminder of better times for openly political music, or at least more hopeful ones from years past." [LA Times]

"A half circle of 24 cops was taking in the scene just outside the shoulder-to-shoulder mob absorbing all that was Rage, and we're pretty sure they weren't there to make sure Evan Dando got home safely. The back half of the grounds just beyond their perimeter was so deserted all that was missing was a single tumbleweed crossing your path toward a depressingly dramatic light display signifying that, yes, other acts were onstage at that hour, too, and one of them was the reunited Lemonheads." [LA Times]

Crowded House & Rage Against the Machine played Coachella

Crowded House also played a warm-up gig at The Glass House on 4/27....

That clip is especially funny since the reunited Crowded House obviously knew what they were in for two nights later at Coachella. They had the unfortunate set time of right-before-Manu-Chao, and two-before the also-reunited Rage Against the Machine on the main stage - all at the very end of a 3-day festival. And there they were - this older kind-of-cheesy-older 80's band playing to thousands of camped-out Rage fans.

It was really awkward when CH singer Neil Finn was hit in the face with a bottle right in the middle of Don't Dream it's over...."Hey now, Hey now...BAM...Don't Dream it's over....". Ouch. He handled it well though - looked a little flustered, changed the words of the song to say he was unaffected, told the thrower it was a good shot, and said "they're coming, they're coming" to the many people chanting "RAGE".

I would have watched Rage, but they didn't stream it the bastards. More photos, videos, reviews, and what not later....
