Hiro Ballroom's drink prices suck + Dean & Britta

Dean & Britta @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC - March 20, 2007 (CRED)
Britta @ Hiro Ballroom

Who charges $10 (before tip) for a tiny watered-down well-drink at a rock show? And who has bartenders that belittle their credit card-paying customers if they don't tip 20% ($2-$3 per drink)? Hiro Ballroom, that's who. If you like to drink, and you're going to see The Cloud Room and The Comas or Soulwax or Patrick Wolf or Patti Smith or Meow Meow or Yacht, either drink before you get there or sneak something in. I would say just boycott the place, but I know I personally don't have that much willpower.

soulwax is too fun to let a shitty venue get you down. damn you, good HIRO booker.

save your beer money and catch soulwax at studio b the next day. it comes with the added bonus of an earlier art brut show.

and also not that i want to defend hiro, but most of the gbh shows there have no cover, so the money you would be spending on admission essentially goes to the inflated drinks.

not that i would know though cause i usually flask it there anyway.

Finally, someone comments on the insane drink prices at Hiro. I won't be back because I really like to drink. Now, if only we can rally against having to go up to 175th to see a show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 4, 2007 7:13 PM

you don't want to come up to 175th? fine. i don't want you in my neighborhood.

BV, tellin it like it is, go on my brotha, go on.

here's a great party trick for Hiro....run up a big tab on your credit card then cancel the card the next morning saying you lost your card at 6pm...

they will deny the charges to Hiro especially if you dont go there a lot!

most important:

sign the bill with your left hand and nothing close to your real signature

do this and you'll be my new "Hiro"

Trust us, we don't want you in our 'hood anymore than you don't want to go north of 14th to get here. . . .maybe more?

Fortunately, it looks like Highline Ballroom will be taking the business away from Hiro once Highline opens. Hopefully Highline's drink prices will be more reasonable.

the cloud room/comas show has free cocktails til 10:03 and 2 for 1 vodkas for patrick wolf.

Very true, very true. I'm much more inclined to just drink before or not at all and just revolve my night around the show.

"you don't want to come up to 175th? fine. i don't want you in my neighborhood."

That's not your neighborhood, you just moved there from Ohio. Stop pretending to be a native.

Thank you BV, it's about time someone stood up for us who drink who get raped at Hiro.

Amen.

BOYCOTT HIRO!

Yeah, the bartender's are belligerent. My GF and friend got into an argument with one over that same credit card+tip issue during an Esthero show last year.

It sucks, because in a service industry it just takes one bad incident to annoy you. But everytime ive been to Hiro, that 'too school for school' overpriced drink attitude seems to be the modus operandi. Attitude is everywhere in New York, shoot its part of its charm. Getting it from a bartender when all you want is a drink isn't the move tho.

i used to bartend at a venue that had cheap drink prices for a venue. People still complained about drink prices then! I think you're getting what you deserve now.

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2007 9:33 AM

"too school for school" is my new favorite phrase.

did anyone think dean and britta were amazing, by the way? I did.

sneak your drink in flask or some kind of juice bottle. suck it up and buy one drink of the same kind you brought, or snatch a cup from the bar. refill with your own beverage, stealth, or just in the bathroom. works every time. unless they actually check your bags/pockets.

Get your drinks from the smaller bar with the guy bartneder. He makes the stiff drinks and doesnt give you a bitchy attitude about tips. The girls there expect like 3 dollars each time. and they are bitches who make weak ass drinks...

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2007 12:28 PM

I've never been - is there any security at the door?

Posted by Anonymous | April 5, 2007 2:55 PM

minimal security inside and out. fuck those bitches at the bar. i'm pretty sure a $40 minimum isn't even legal

Posted by pd | April 5, 2007 7:24 PM

12:28 i totally agree w/you about the guy bartender. he's cool and hooks it up with the free soda (vs. $4!!).

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2007 10:32 AM

youre supposed to leave a tip?!

Posted by Diana | April 6, 2007 11:36 AM

I was in HIRO last summer when I was staying in New York and I have never met such rude and bitchy bartenders in my life. The girls there are the worst representatives of a club which apart from the prices, I enjoyed. The music was great and the line-ups you mentioned shouldn't be missed. From Dublin [Ireland], this guy would advise anyone to not spend a cent in that place!

Canal Room.

I tried to order a club soda at Studio B (during the Adult. show on April 7th) and they wanted me to pay $4 for five ounces of club soda. You NY'ers really need to strike these obsence price strategies. What was even more disturbing was the look of dissent I received from the server after refusing to pay for the drink.

Paul, the same thing happened to me at Studio B. Plus, the female bartenders always seem to help the men first. WTF is up with that??
