How was Patrick Wolf at Hiro Ballroom?

Exhaustion kicked in last night and I literally fell asleep sitting up before I moved to my bed and missed Land of Talk @ Mercury Lounge, Parenthetical Girls @ Cake Shop, Kiiiiiii @ Cinders Gallery, and what-I-really-didn't-want-to-miss Patrick Wolf at Hiro Ballroom....

Patrick Wolf @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC - April 5, 2007 (CRED)
Patrick Wolf @ Hiro Ballroom

How was he? At least one person told me the sound sucked. Did you get a drink? How were the other shows?

Patrick Wolf plays again tonight and tomorrow.

Drinks... what they hell are they thinking charging $10 for a well vodka tonic and $7 for a shitty beer?

But seeing Patirck far out-weighed that. Although the sound sucked, he was excited and energetic opening up with "Overture" and a brief cover of "Moon River" "Get Lost"... then playing "ChildCatcher" "Tristan" "Libertine" "Magic Position" & "Bloodbeat" can't remember the order. (I may be leaving out a song). Short set but great performance and well worth it. Can't wait for tonight.

Definately the last time I go to Hiro for a show (unless it is free).

well it was supposed to be free with RSVP... and it wasn't (did i fuck up?). crowd was insufferable and, although I do smoke cigs, the dancefloor cigarette smoking was particularly obnoxious. the sound was indeed awful for the first half of the show, but the spectacle Wolf put on was worth the 10 bucks I unexpectedly had to shell out.

land of talk were good but the union hall show was better - probably just because it was more 'intimate'. the other bands (balun, vampire weekend, and mahogany) all killed it though (mahogany especially - mercury feels like a great room for them). Balun was the surprise hit of the night though - first east coast show and a HUGE crowd that loved them.

From the looks of it...Gay.

It was suppose to be a free show. I had to pay 10 bucks after i waited 30 min in the line outside ! (it was f*cking cold)... My trick to catch up this 10 bucks = NO TIPS (anyway, the service is awfull)

Nice show by the way, but really shitty sound !

grzond, I think you did fuck up, because all we had to do was say we were on the rsvp list and we were let in (though, there have been times at hiro where ive rsvped and was still forced to pay, so you probably didnt fuck up completely).

good set, sound was off until part way through, though i still had a great time.

Posted by dan | April 6, 2007 1:05 PM

the show was amazing..i had no problem getting in free with the rsvp. the onle real problem i had was that i felt the set was a little short but what can you do? The drinks also were obscenely expensive.

Got there at 12 and they wanted $10 for admission. Girls could still get comped though.

I didn't make it to p wolf either, but damn did Dave P and JDH kill it at their record release show at Tribeca last night

What time was that? I ended up at the Hiro Ballroom last night, but I saw a bunch of other bands there instead, part of a leukemia benefit thing ( http://www.gbh.tv/ART/flyers/patrickwolfearly.gif ).

I don't think most people were there to see any of the bands actually, which sucks for the bands, but I guess that's how it goes. And yeah, the sound wasn't too great either.

They were doing free drinks (w/ Navan, some kind of promotion) which was kind of cool. Some of the bartenders were super-pissed that some people weren't tipping though..

* If there were not girls in your group they were charging 10 even if you RSVPed or not.

* You could have gotten whiskey-beer for $9. You just had to ask for the deal. So If you didn't want to get drunk then the drinks were expensive. I decided to get drunk.

* I had never complained before for the Hiro sound, but it did suck last night. Patrick was cool... worth to check out his album tho.

The benefit was the early show. Patrick Wolf was the late show.

" If there were not girls in your group they were charging 10 even if you RSVPed or not."

Ironically, Patrick Wolf is gay.

I know. I complained with GBH.tv

I went with four other male friends at midnight. When the guy giving away tickets at the door asked me where was I going I answered to see Patrick Wolf, we wnet in without paying a single buck. It was all about getting one of those white tickets and not about having girls in your group.
Waiting in the cold outside sucked a big one, but the show was worth every suffering. His voice was amazing and the violin and cello awesome. They need to do somehting about the sound!

he was beautiful.

As all who were at Studio B know, Patrick Wolf is NOT gay. I can only assume that the people insisting he is are men who are ashamed that they are not so wildly attractive.

Posted by ummm | April 7, 2007 3:26 AM

Well, I asked him why we had to pay give that we RSVPed and he said we were too many guys (men he meant). So that was clear.

Posted by Eduardo | April 7, 2007 3:34 AM

To ummm, actually I was at Studio B too. Anyone who was there would know that he IS gay.

He was just joking around about he creepy MC.

Posted by Eman | April 7, 2007 10:49 AM

i'm not sure if i am gay or not, but i sure am fun.

Are you sure you're the real Patrick Wolf and not someone else trying to pull our proverbial legs?

Posted by dyspeptic skeptic | April 7, 2007 2:28 PM

I'm not down with homosexual singers. They pervert the youth.

Patrick recently explained in an interview that...dun dun dun...he is ambiguous.

Watch the interview where he talks about it here:

he's leaving himself open. i was at studio b and he was just upset that the "what's up" MC was quick to assume he's gay. either way, as long as he's patrick, i'm in love. i only wish he came to the US more often.
