Hey, Letterman's show seems to be on a good roll booking bands lately - does anyone know if his show has brought in fresh talent bookers?
Posted by Dfactor | April 25, 2007 10:17 AM
$45? No.

Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 11:46 AM
Woo hoo! Got through first time, which makes a nice change.
Anyone got any idea how strict the will call at Webster Hall is. Not for JAMC but I have tickets for LCD and I'm now going to be in England that day and don't want me not being able to go to stop my mate from going... Do photocopies of credit cards / ID work?
Posted by Alex | April 25, 2007 11:48 AM
stop bitching like an unemployed kid and pay up if you want to see a good show.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 11:49 AM
I would call first, but I've gone with a copy of CC and license once, no problem at all
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 11:51 AM
yeah, you have to give your buddy a copy of your ID, credit card and also have a note with your signature saying you are giving them to _____.
Posted by ondal | April 25, 2007 11:53 AM
Cool, thanks for advice on photocopies, I'll call them anyway (though as it will be the Mercury Lounge box office I end up speaking with, whether I can trust that surly lot is another matter).
I am now very excited about the fact that I'm going to end up seeing nearly every act that I'm missing at Coachella in the comfort of a 20 min subway journey from my apt.
Posted by Alex | April 25, 2007 11:55 AM
amen to that. too bad you will miss LCD though, their show at Bowery was absolutely amazing
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 11:57 AM
10$ in fees.
ticketweb is finally catching up with (their parent company) ticketmaster's fees.
The illusion of competetion is over!
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 11:58 AM
Yeah those fees are gouging. Ticketweb sez, "Stuntin like my Daddy."
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:08 PM
Ok seriously...If you don't want to spend the money, then DON"T GO. I feel like the people that bitch everytimethere is an upcoming show either:
A. Want to go, but don't have money to spend.
or
B. Just like to hear themselves speak.
Noone is forcing you to go to a show.
(btw I'm going both nights, score!)
Posted by brian-nyc | April 25, 2007 12:15 PM
why can't people comment that a show is expensive?
this show is overpriced, but it might be amazing (or it could be a total bomb).
isn't this the place to express those ideas? why do you dickheads always jump all over someone when they say something is too expensive or complain that they couldn't get tickets or something?
if you don't like the comments, DON'T READ THEM!
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:19 PM
I agree with you brian. why is there such a need to bitch about every frickin' show and their fees? It's NYC, wake up! Maybe if you saw them in Arkansas you could get away with paying 20 bucks, but if you really want to go to a show save up your money and quit making up excuses and complaining like a little girl.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:20 PM
Little boys complain also.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:28 PM
I agree, people should not complain about things, simply take what is given to them. never challenge the status quo. the nail that stands up gets hammered down, etc. Besides, people who do not have a lot of money do not deserve to have any fun anyway. And they are mostly poor people, who are icky anyway.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:32 PM
you are right, this show would be perfect for boys and girls who like to whine. don't forget to wear water-proof eyeliner, cryining babies
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:32 PM
Monday show sold out
Posted by grammr | April 25, 2007 12:34 PM
that's true...poor people are icky...how can you afford to live in NYC anyway?
btw...just kidding...chill :)
Posted by brian-nyc | April 25, 2007 12:36 PM
If these shows are taking a little longer to sell out, you could try your luck at the Mercury Lounge box office to try and skip the $10 service charge.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:42 PM
10$ in ticketweb fees? thanks ticketmaster daughter company! Growing up to be just like mom.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:46 PM
grammr, monday is not sold out as of now.
Posted by shtRokCty | April 25, 2007 12:50 PM
expensive? overpriced? and whining about it? oh cmon now. its a tad bit expensive if you are only used to seeing shows at the mercury lounge or bowery ballroom. At least you are getting to see an amazing band in a relatively small place and a FULL SHOW.
You want too expensive and overpriced head down a few posts to see the fools crowing that they paid 30-40 dollars to see anjani last night and leonard cohen played 2 songs..yes thats right 2 songs and not even ones of his. Wowwowowowowowow
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 12:50 PM
it was before, maybe someon'es credit card didn't go through or they were sparing some tickets
Posted by grammr | April 25, 2007 12:57 PM
I love it that my favorite bands play some where awesome like Bowery for $15, but I often wonder how it's worth it for them.
I don't know how the percentages works with the venue and if the band sees any of the other $ from drinks, but if you do the math it's strikingly little money. $7500 ($15 x 500 people) at the gate -- when you think about how many band members there are, how many people work the event, opening bands, ect... it doesn't seem like a lot.
A band of this size getting back together, playing in smallish venues in NYC, $45 seems right to me. By and large we are spoiled in NYC. There is tons of great, cheap music. In context of how expensive everything else is in this city, you realize how cheap the music is. It's when some thing normally priced, like this, comes around that we demonstrate how spoiled we are.
Bottom line: this band has earned it. If you can't save up to see them, sorry (really, I am), but you know what, I really would have liked to have had Nobu Sushi for lunch today, but you don't hear me complaining. I haven't earned to right to have some of the best sushi at the same price as the cheap delivery place around the corner. Seriously, Suck it up, or better yet embrace the fact you can still go see some awesome show at Mercury for $8 or some jazz for the price of a drink. I know in the age of free downloads you think the music world is here to entertain you 24/7 while fitting into your shoestring budget, but the few times it doesn't, just shut up. You want to see these guys because they are amazing, well if they are so good at what they do let 'em earn a buck for christ sake. Cause I'd that every person on this board complaining hasn't spent a dime buying their music.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 2:41 PM
I don't think anyone was really complaining, just saying that $45 seemed expensive. Why is that such an offensive comment?
The ones who are whining, seem to be bitching about the people who comment that the show is a little over-priced (which it is... given J&MC's track record).
If this was a Pavement reunion at Webster for $45, I think everyone would be wowing at what a bargain it is.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 3:42 PM
2:41 poster..i threw out what you had to say once you said nobu was the best sushi
apparently you have never been to masa or even tomoe sushi.
You show yourself to be an amateur.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 4:24 PM
Also, your last sentence says "Cause I'd that every person" is horrible grammar. If you meant to say "I'd bet", or better yet, "I'd bet a ticket to see JAMC", than you owe me a ticket.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 5:00 PM
Anon 2:41... I know we have a lot of good, cheap music here...
BUT... the fact remains that when most acts play in NYC, the shows are more expensive here than anywhere else.
We're paying $18 to see The National, while Philadelphia only pays $10... Panda Bear is $15 here, $10 there... those are just a couple of examples...
PLUS... these shows sell out (quickly) in NY, and sometimes not at all elsewhere.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that a lot of bands play here that don't play anywhere else... and I LOVE all the free shows in the summer...
But, we New Yorkers do PAY for a lot here. Just because some of you trust fund Brooklynite hipsters have money to do anything you want, don't start getting snippy with someone who says something is overpriced. Just because some people have to WORK for their money, doesn't mean they won't pay good money for a show they want to see. On the contrary, they'll probably enjoy it more than you.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 5:10 PM
I HATE trustfund Brooklynite Hipsters
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 5:22 PM
i agree that nobu sushi probably doesnt even make the top ten sushi places in new york (it's the non sushi items that distinguises nobu), but it's certainly better than tomoe which is mediocre at best.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 5:23 PM
for forty five bucks plus fees I hope they play for more than ten minutes and face the audience
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 5:52 PM
I wont pay $45 for any band at webster hall..I hope the scalpers buy up all the tix and get stuck w/ them....an out of desperation sell them to me for $25>fair price to see JAMC
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 5:55 PM
I have no idea whether a pavement reunion is worth more than a JAMC reunion, or whatever the going rate is. but really, 45 bucks is jack shit. Anyone here ever bought a round of shots for a bunch of people at bar? 45 bucks ain't nothing. Especially if you have a job where you can buy tickets at noon online.
I can't wait, and 45 bucks is a fair price, if not a bargain, it's not too steep. Especially since this is my classic rock. People who died their hair and shaved the sides and had 15 earrings and shit wrote Jesus and Mary Chain on desks in '86 and it meant something.
nah, that wasn't me. I liked Bruce.
Posted by slim | April 25, 2007 6:30 PM
DYED their hair, not died. Plus, those were the days, when what you wrote on your desk meant something.
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 6:57 PM
5:23 poster you said tomoe sushi is mediocre at best.
That tells me you probably have never been there before.
U are a dummy.
Oh and Jesus and MAry Chain rocks. Gonna be an amazing show
Posted by Anonymous | April 25, 2007 7:32 PM
I saw the JAMC at the Ritz...maybe it was 86...who can remember? Whenever I saw them, they never played a 10 minute set and anyone who suggests that they suck live is a total liar moron. I have see the Mary Chain every tour passing thru New York...THEY ARE THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME!
So forget about your imagined myths of what punk was all about; when I first saw the Dead Boys at CBGB you sat in your chair in front of the stage by the tables, never any stage diving antics or moshing ...or what fans are about. (I was already married and a father of a 4 year old in 86 who will be going to see them in NY...also with my son too cool) Stick to the music or maybe you need to stick to sushi. (I like Tomae) The JAMC are a delicious piece of electronic sushi and soul! If you doubt it, I challenge you to read some of the lyrics, they write the BEST SONGS and go enjoy a special treat for your ears and head!

It's all very well saying "pass by mercury lounge" but the way shows have been selling out recently do you really want to risk it? I live about 5 mins away and still buy my tickets online for most gigs like this because knowing my luck it will sell out in 10 mins which is about the same amount of time it takes the box office staff at Mercury to even acknowledge your presence.

i saw them in both '86 and '87 at the ritz. good, moody shows, nothing stellar. most of the time their backs were to the audience, and their use of a drum machine always seemed to restrain them. but the shows were definitely worth the $13 ticket price. the last time i saw them was in '94 at the academy. mazzy star opened and hope sandoval sang 'sometimes always' with them during the encore. that capped a very memorable, somber evening of pop music.
Posted by j | April 26, 2007 9:30 AM
I'm thinking because this is a "comeback tour" they will try to please the crowd more
Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2007 10:23 AM
Saw the JAMC around '85 at the old Danceteria, just before Psychocandy was released. The set was a loud continuous squall of guitar noise, only punctuated by Gillespie's rote drumming, and the Reid Bros. occasional acknowledment of the crowd via menacing glares. A half-hour set, no audience interaction, no encore, no thank you's - and we loved it!!!
I'll stay home this time.

i didn't catch the danceteria show, but i remember the one at the world sometime toward the end of '85 and the great gillespie was still drumming for them. back when bands were scheduled to hit the stage at one o'clock in the morning on weeknights, and good times were had by all.
Posted by j | April 26, 2007 12:38 PM
J: I wuz on line for that World show - but didn't make it past the picky doorperson. I do recall seeing Trouble Funk at that space though. You are right about band start times back then - I seem to recall an Echo & the Bunnymen show at the Peppermint Lounge that started around 3am.

you old timers make me want to cry.
fuck you all.
Posted by in jest | April 26, 2007 2:05 PM
The Ramones always went on around two or three in the morning, no matter what day of the week it was. Hell, I remember seeing a show where they walked onstage close to 4am!

it was sooo much cooler back in the day when bands would go on really late. Now it's ridiculous. the opener plays at 7pm for chrissakes and the headliners go on at 8 or 9. It's really not as much fun going to see a punk band and being home by eleven.
One more example of how much more fun this city USED to be.
Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2007 2:24 PM
This city sucks now. Guilliani shot it in the heart and now all the yuppies and hipsters and rich kids have eaten away at the carcass. Manhattan stopped being cool about ten years ago.
Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2007 2:28 PM
You can't have late night shows anymore becuase whiny little rich pricks in their new multi million dollar condos are living in every formerly cool neighborhood with a music venue. Who ever heard of a noise complaint about a club show back in the day? Unheard of. Quality of life only works for the well to do.
Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2007 2:30 PM
what's wrong with an earlier show? do you have a job to go to the next day? makes life much easier when you're home by midnight vs 2am.
Posted by late night | April 26, 2007 2:35 PM
so then just stay home and don't go to concerts then. NOONE is forcing you to.
seriousy...i think most of you need to create your own blog and cry to each other.
Posted by brian-nyc | April 26, 2007 2:37 PM
to brian-nyc:
you seem to be the one who is crying, you fucking douche!
i think you need to create your own blog in which you document the insertion of all these sticks up your ass.
it's obvious how "cool" you are, because you'd prefer to get home at 4am on a worknight... and personally, I'm willing to stay up late and see a cool show. However, what's wrong with being home a little earlier when you have to be at work at 8am in the morning?
OBVIOUSLY, nobody is forcing anyone to go to these shows, or comment on this blog, or anything... just as nobody is forcing you to be a complete fucking asshole.
People like YOU are what's wrong with this city... those who fail to accept what's happening, and are too cool to just go with it and have fun.
in conclusion, FUCK OFF YOU FUCKING IDIOT!

omg that was too funny. thank you for the laugh, lol...
(dips into my trust to buy more concert tix)
take care :)
Posted by brian-nyc | April 26, 2007 3:35 PM
I do not remember them ever playing Danceteria.
But I also saw them in a sold out Giants Stadium show opening for Depeche Mode...
Posted by David S | April 26, 2007 3:46 PM
The difference in seeing a Rock show at 8pm vs.2am, is the difference between seeing a matinee Broadway show or an evening Broadway show. The latter is just that much more fun. Even if's the same show, the earlier one is just not the same.
And it's not just the time that's different, it's the whole feel of everything that's different now. Along with the late nights, there was a certain decadent, loose, real rock n roll type of spirit and environment to club shows a few years (decades) back. Now a show is just a show. Expensive, on time, branded. Corporate sponsorship and renovated venues means a rather tamed down version of the rock n roll experience. Going to see a band now is a little like going to the movies. Heck, they don't even show movies round the clock any more like they use to on 42nd street!
Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2007 3:51 PM
this is better than going to any concert
Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2007 4:21 PM
David S. - the Danceteria gig may have been in '84. Spike, who worked at Danceteria, mentions some of the club's gigs, including JAMC here:
http://spikepriggen.blogs.com/stars_after_stars_after_s/2005/01/danceteriathe_b.html
Posted by drewo | April 26, 2007 4:25 PM
I don't remember it and it can be researched here:
http://aprilskies.amniisia.com/gigs/gigs_by_year.php?year_sort=1986
The first NY show was at the Ritz (now Webster Hall) 20 years ago. Cmon kids, where were you then, cause I was there and at The World show too, I thought that gig was with the drum machine though...
In any case, they still may have played as this guy says, but I went to Danceteria, and generally got in despite that Howiqu Montage or however that prick spells his name at the door would let you in,maybe...I certainly am not as cool as this guy who bartended there but maybe he is a liar just trying to sound cool thinking who would ever know...I need proof damn it!...I made it a point to get to see them the first time they played NY and every time thereafter.
Posted by David S. | April 26, 2007 4:56 PM
Yeah, I checked that April Skies site as well - seems to be incomplete. There's a few other references on the web to Danceteria/JAMC.
Guess you'll just have to take my word for it - because I was there.
Posted by drewo | April 26, 2007 5:34 PM
Kindly show me any reference on the Aprilskies site, please.
I never seen it and been a registered member for many years, so I am curious. Thanks!

that site seems incomplete. their first ny show could not have been in 1986. i'm pretty sure they played the world (which isn't listed on that site), and it would've been before the first ritz show. on aprilskies there's a usa tour of every major city from coast to coast in december 1985, but not one nyc gig. no way. i thought that they had played a couple of nyc shows during that tour. i'm sure i have it written down in a journal back then.
drewo -
i remember bo diddley playing the limelight around '86 or '87. he was supposed to go on at 1 or so, but jumped on stage around 2 or 3. during the show i stood near his preteen grandchildren, listening to them gleefully shout 'that's my grandpaw' after every song. classic.

45 bucks is a bit much.. I am only 34, love the JAMC, but 45 bucks is too much, given that they might only play 20-30min, or they could play a regular 1hr-1:30 set.
I saw them open for Depeche Mode (don't laugh), at Giant Stadium in like 1991 or so, but wasn't really into them at that point, I was just a dumb kid. JAMC is great no doubt, but I will save my $$ for lower priced shows. And, yes, I do have a job, a decent one at that. A career even. Although I do live in suburbia with a wife and 1 child, and I am half deaf from going to so many shows since 15, a NYC native, if there are any left. A Brooklyn kid before it was cool to live in Brooklyn. East New york suckas! =)
Hope you guys enjoy the JAMC show. Really, not kidding. =)

Teenage Lust
Blues From a Gun
Cracking Up
Just Like Honey (with a female vocalist but I didn't catch her name)

They wont play for just a half hour. They will probably play a normal length set. They won't have the big floppy haircuts. They will have short normal hair. Even if they act arrogant, they will be happy to be there, because they are getting a big payday. Basically what I am saying is the show will be great, but this ain't twenty years ago folks.

The only thing more irksome to me than the $45 price was having to give ticketbastard/web/whatever an additional body part just to move some ones and zeros around in cyberspace. Seriously, F that. My solution: went by Mercury yesterday and let the Ticket Gods decide. Tix were available, I bought two, I feel better. Worth a try if you're conflicted.
God, I detest Webster Hall, but for JAMC I will suspend my boycott, suck or no suck.

a pair of converse cost $50 these days. what's the big deal?
a few packs of cigarettes in NYC cost the same.
relax. if you want to see JAMC, pay the money. if you're too cheap, or poor, nobody cares to hear the rant. every band is not Fugazi.
Posted by sb | April 29, 2007 6:41 AM
I cant believe people are arguing over a $45 concert ticket. Thats less than average if you were to see any major band and half the cost of anything remotely on the level of legends like this. If you like the band, go see them because the chance may NEVER come again. It ended forever once, how often does anyone get a second chance. Support your favorite band and they may support us with more fresh material. They are amazing live, go check you tube for that reverence clip from coachella. What more could you possibly ask for. They are on fire.
