Sounds like he's never been to the Gramercy - the sound there is HORRIBLE! The walls and floor are concrete and there's a huge echo which makes the drums even louder - they DON'T need to be miked - the bass is like BBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, and the guitars and vocals get lost in the echo.

God, I'm tired of all you spoiled ny assholes complaining about the sound at every venue. I don't know where the f--k you were standing at the show you've seen there. I was at the center of the standing area for two shows and they sounded just fine. And this is coming from someone who always buys CDs as opposed to listening to mp3s. A friend of mine taped one of the shows and it sounds fine as well. The sound might not be as good as Bowery or Mercury, but it was satisfactory. And that is far from horrible. I have been to several shows at Mercury, where the sound sucked too, so maybe it was horrible the time you were there. (maybe you're not an asshole after all.)
On the plus side, the floor is tilted and the stage is high enough to have unobstructed view of the stage even if there are people taller in front of you. If you're stuck in the back at Mercury or Bowery, you might not see shit. Sound and view are both important to me at a show and Gramercy makes up for it in viewing experience if it lacks anything in sound compared to the best sounding venues.
That doesn't change the fact that I take Bowery Presents over Live Nation any day, but that's another story.

The only show I've seen at Gramercy was Birdmonster a couple of weeks ago and the sound was horrible. Believe me - I usually don't complain about stuff like that, but it was possibly the worst sound mix I've ever heard in NYC. Hopefully they'll work out the kinks by the time the shows happen.

You kids complain way too much about bad sound...
when i was a young hipster hanging out in the south street seaport (it used to be hip) we would stand on each others shoulders for just a chance to hear bands play on the docks... i wish i could remember who played or what it sounded like but..well it sounded better than colin meloy ever did i tell you!
