Smashing Pumpkins - James Iha speaks, tour dates
I think everyone knew this already, but anyway - Rolling Stone spoke to James Iha:
“No, I’m not part of the current Smashing Pumpkins album or tour, I haven’t spoken to Billy in years. I’m writing for a solo record, which I’m going to record this year, and working on my indie label Scratchie Records,” says Iha, referring to the label he co-founded in 2002 with Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schelsininger. Scratchie has put out albums by Albert Hammond Jr. and The Sounds, among others.Where do you think the Pumpkins will play in NYC? The latest tour dates are below...

Billy Corgan is just using the Pumpkin name as a last ditch effort to save his career. When was the last time he put out anything half decent. Zwan and his solo stuff sucked. No James, No D'Arcy no good!

They're also scheduled to play the Virgin Fest in Baltimore Aug 4th weekend, FYI.

James and D'Arcy never influenced the band's writing. D'Arcy was more of a liability than anything and didn't even finish with the band. James was (and still is) a good guitar player, but have you ever listened to his solo stuff? Yikes. It's disappointing that James is gone, but the old songs are still Billy's, and if Billy wants to come back and play some old tunes live, I'm okay with a slightly different supporting cast. I have no expectations for the new album though. Maybe it will surprise me, but I'm not counting on it.

"noone cares about sp"
You are so right. That's why they are headlining major festivals across the world. Because no one cares.

Promoters just *think* people care...Same old idea: if you are having a huge festival with big corporate sponsors, go with the safe nostalgia act as the headliner...

Ah yes, the "corporate sponsor"...aka the devil...Still don't understand what is wrong with a corporate sponsor (in moderation, of course). Keeps ticket prices down and level of talent high (ie, Lollapalooza). But you seem to be pretty close minded.

no no nothing wrong with the CS-just that when you are putting tons of money into a festival, you are going to go with the safe pick...thats all...Its not a good thing or a bad thing: just accounts for why SP are headlining lots of festivals: they have great name recognition, not nec. tons of people clamoring to see them....

We shall see once the band finally starts playing some gigs. As a promoter, it would be pretty irresponsible to put out a major artist (and pay for that kind of an artist like Smashing Pumpkins) if there aren't people that want to see them. I just don't understand why they are a "safe pick" if people don't want to see them.
But I'll stop now.

Why don't they just call themselves "Zwan?"

They are playing 7/7/7 at Giants Stadium as part of festival. YOU HEARD IT HEAR FIRST.

"Why don't they just call themselves "Zwan?""
Maybe because they will be playing Smashing Pumpkins songs and not Zwan songs.

"They are playing 7/7/7 at Giants Stadium as part of festival. YOU HEARD IT HEAR FIRST."
That would make Richard Branson, a very unhappy man as he's paid a small fortune for the their first US reunion date to be his festival in Baltimore on August 5th. In other words, not happening if you were even being serious in the first place...unless they'll be piping the new album over the load speaker at the stadium that day of release.

looks like its true about 7/7/7 smashing pumpkins, the police, and kelly clarkson at giants stadium for al gore's thing. and some others of course.

They're cute "reuniting". Talk about a wildly over-rated band. I doubt anyone really missed them to begin with.

Gotta love the generalizations. "I don't like the band. My one friend doesn't like the band. Therefore, no one likes them."
There are too many idiots on the internet.

ha, amen to the last post. the one you're responding to is probably a 13 year old child who hasn't yet figured out that good music is good music, even if it wasn't produced in the last 30 days. (i.e. isn't recycled at them daily on the top 40)
Posted by Anonymous | April 13, 2007 8:45 PM
i missed them. So i guess you're wrong, deb. sorry.
Do people realize that their own personal tastes are not necessarily what EVERYONE likes or dislikes? I can guarantee you, there are many thousands of people who are happy to hear that the pumpkins are releasing a new album. And maybe just as many who aren't happy. And probably even more who don't care either way. But you just show how narrowminded you are when you make such stupid statements as "I doubt anyone really missed them to begin with".

The money and exposure's too good to not play festivals, and the multi-band bill and huge crowds - that are part and parcel of such fests - should guarantee that a lot of people see SP: even if they may not be interested.
As far as no Iha and D'Arcy, well, no matter the former's solo work or the latter's being a so-called liability, the fact remains, this is not the same band, and Iha's musicality and D'Arcy's character (as in, playing a role, a personality) will be missed.
In terms of the solo Corgan, I thought ZWAN was decent enough, and exposed (more of) his power-pop sensibilities; when in a controlled environment (aka ego-on-hold) he can be a crafty songwriter, with a knack for a sneering minor-to-major melody, and fairly irresistible harmonies. I just don't think the name of the band (that is, ZWAN) worked too well. YMMV, but try marketing it.
The issue I've always had with SP - or any other Corgan artistic vehicle - is, there was a severe lack of a backbeat: that defines a band, or any other ensemble outing.
Now, I do think it would have been interesting to have seen Corgan with New Order.
If they play NYC-proper, I think it'll be at Radio City: not the largest venue, but that's the point.
Then again, there's always Randall's Island.

I am so bummed about Iha and D'arcy not being a part of the tour. Of course, Billy always has had creative control over everything pumkins, but I saw their last show in Boulder after Machina and it was incredible. Now without them, it is kind of like seeing The Who without Keith Moon and John Entwistle. Billy can get studio musicians to play, but it won't be the same. It will be great, but not as great as it could have been.
