The season opens with the return of a SummerStage favorite, vocalist Cassandra Wilson. While she’s widely acknowledged as one of America’s best jazz singers, Wilson’s artistic vision defies categorization, incorporating deep blues, folk, soul, rock and world music. Her 2006 album Thunderbird is her most rhythmically adventurous, replete with drum loops and sampling. As always, Wilson’s choice of material reflects her wide-ranging tastes, and on Thunderbird she mixes stirring originals with mesmerizing covers of everyone from Blind Lemon Jefferson to Jakob Dylan.More Summerstage dates here. The Apples losing Hilarie was the worst thing for them.

But Hilarie could never sing (in tune) live. It made me cringe.

Central Village has the South Street Seaport and Battery Park free shows listed, besides New Pornographers, there is Spoon, Fujiya and Miyagi, Animal Collective and others

I saw the apples at SXSW twice this
year and they killed! They've become a
very impressive live band.

The Apples new album "New Magnetic Wonder" is genius! If you haven't checked it out yet - and are suspicious... don't be. Its a true pop tour de force! Bill Doss from the Olivia Tremor Control has joined them and they are better than they've ever been live.
