DO. NOT. WANT.

hey bv, little obsession with venues? and the process of taking down one sign and putting up another? it's ok. i feel you

Posted by pretty girl | April 10, 2007 1:48 PM

But what does it all mean???? More bookings of hippie jam bands? Or will the Bill Graham '60s audio concerts be played behind the onstage screen?

Posted by Dfactor | April 10, 2007 1:53 PM

The new sign/concept sucks.

Posted by ep | April 10, 2007 1:54 PM

eww

Ok, yes, the name/sign on a venue doesn't mean nearly as much as the space itself, sound system, acts booked, policies.

However, why the f*** change a name for no reason? Concertgoers know what "Irving Plaza" is. It's party of the identity of the venue. Why ridiculously invoke the name of the old Fillmore for no reason whatsoever?

Does some decision-maker think that former hippies are now going to attend the next indie buzz band simply due to the nostalgia associated with the name of the venue?

that is an abortion.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2007 2:34 PM

was just there last monday for blood brothers, havent been in years, and youre right, they need some damn bathrooms upstairs! and there was an actual line to wait on to go outside to have a cigarette. yep. great space, poorly put together and run. could easily be awesome, but.. yeah, we'll see what improvements they make i guess.

Re: "However, why the f*** change a name for no reason? Concertgoers know what "Irving Plaza" is. It's part of the identity of the venue. Why ridiculously invoke the name of the old Fillmore for no reason whatsoever?"

I believe Live Nation's strategy is to brand the name "Fillmore" throughout the U.S and Canada (if not worldwide) so that they'll have a venue called the "Fillmore" in each major market they're in. They're changing the name of TLA in Philly to "Fillmore Philadelphia" and they already have venues in S.F. and Denver called "Fillmore."

The idea is that you'll supposedly just look for the local "Fillmore" if you want to hear music no matter what city you're in.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2007 2:46 PM

^that is a horrid idea

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2007 3:04 PM

I think the sign change is a bit odd - it's like renaming Corner Bistro as "21."

Both are good, one's arguably better than the other, given the day and night of the week.

But, as "pretty girl" noted, your investment with the signs is interesting, BV ;-)

Some people have foot fetishes, others have sign fetishes. And some people like anal play. To each his own.

Posted by Steve | April 10, 2007 3:10 PM

The Fillmore was open for 3 years in NYC, Irving Plaza has been doing shows 20 + years as Irving Plaza, the logic behind this is insane. Someone above had mentioned the correct, its just branding, they want to turn the live music experience into Starbucks, hey, this is America and godspeed to anyone that wants to make a dollar but it doesnt do shit to improve the live music experience.

Is it just me, or does that 'F' before Fillmore look a lot like the Fandango logo (aka those annoying commercials I have to watch before my movie)

RENEGADE REPLIED:

Not to go on the defensive, so my phrasing isn't misunderstood as such, I wasn't slamming BV's signage: simply teasing.

Feet can be nice - depending on the foot.

So can butt-play - depending on the butt.

Now, it is a glaring omission that you didn't mention snowballing - is that because Winter's over? ;-)

UGH. that sign SO UGLY. the old irving sign was nice and basid. this damn thing lookss like a sign for a movie theater.

Posted by ohseptember | April 10, 2007 5:36 PM

why does live nation want irving plaza to look like vegas?

Posted by rt | April 10, 2007 6:05 PM

I used to live on ellis around the corner from the filmore in frisco. I now live around the corner from irving. it's like the energy is following me. 1st trader joe's and now this.

Posted by josef | April 10, 2007 6:12 PM

Oh dear. That is hideous.

Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2007 9:00 PM

The sign says F The Fillmore. haha...

Posted by F The Fillmore | April 10, 2007 9:13 PM

FUGLY!

Posted by ag | April 10, 2007 9:17 PM

does anyone really care that much that they're renaming it the fillmore, isnt the fillmore a cooler name than irving plaza...they can't do much to make it worse so improvement is improvement in my mind, i mean granted the whole "the fillmore in every city" is stupid, but realistically all they're doing is adding grateful dead posters and changing the sign, its not that exciting

Posted by mike | April 10, 2007 9:31 PM

I dunno about the name change but does this place allow cameras in? and not just lil digicams, but bigger SLR's like Webster Hall does?

Someone tell me so I don't waste time bring mine tomorrow if I have to bring it back home...

Posted by Rae | April 10, 2007 9:35 PM

That is horrible! Do I see a small "irving plaza" in the white bar above the Fillmore? Terrible sign, terrible idea but we don't have a choice do we?

What is the thinking behind making a chain out of individual unique music venues? I bet the only thing that changes is the sign outside and maybe some new beverages or paint inside.

Posted by derusto | April 10, 2007 11:36 PM

Holy shit, the irvingplaza.com website is gone. It now redirects you to a very unfriendly live nation page.

They actually had a decent informational website, but now it's gone. What next, the helpful answering machine message which listed set times?

Re: "What is the thinking behind making a chain out of individual unique music venues? I bet the only thing that changes is the sign outside and maybe some new beverages or paint inside."

Isn't each Starbucks and each McDonalds and each Old Navy a little different too?

The Irving Plaza website is gone and redirects you to Live Nation so if you want to search for any event you'll only get the Live Nation shows listed in the results.

It definetely resembles Fandango (the shittiest way to buy movie tickets because it only does Lowes)

Stupid. Another example of the Rape of New York.

I'm sure there will be plenty of happy fanboys just giddy to see a show at the "Fillmore".

I hear the "Menudo Returns" tour is booked there in the summer.

Its the Hard Rock-ification of concert halls. Bad enough we lost the Bottom Line and CBGBs. They're doing this all over; the Theater of Living Arts (TLA) in Philly is noww The Fillmore at TLA. Its a chain. I agree with the guy above who invoked McDonalds; going to a concert is more and more like going to Nordstrom or the Disney Store or a fast food chain. Remember that ambiance of the smoky rock club? Good, 'cuz its gone for good.

Scary thought...I used to live around the corner from the Denver Fillmore (about 6 blocks away), now I live in Philly 2 blocks away from the Fillmore Philadephia or whatever the full 6-word name is. I can't wait for In and Out Burger to make it to my neighborhood! Maybe one day the poconos will even be built up and be called the Rocky Mountains, that would be awesome! Every place I move to will essentially be the same.
