This week w/ Alanis Morissette, NIN & A Brief Smile
There was really only one big thing that happened on the Internet this week, and I'm pretty sure everyone I talked to asked me about it at least once. My Humps:
Also generating a lot of noise lately - but something I have yet to try for myself - is the whole Nine Inch Nails "Year Zero" marketing thing:
"Year Zero" came to life in early February when Web-savvy fans discovered that highlighted letters inside words on a NIN tour T-shirt spelled out "I am trying to believe." Savvy fans added a ".com" to the five words and, voila, located a thought-provoking, eerie Web site. Other associated sites created by 42 Entertainment, where a dark future reigns supreme, were soon discovered. Within days, the blogosphere was rich with anxious NIN fans sharing their experiences on message boards.[Billboard]By the way, you can also STREAM THE WHOLE ALBUM already - it's out on April 17th. Heartonastick says it "gets better with every listen". I'm just lisening for the first time.
JV, Elvis & A Brief Smile

Last but not least, there's the controversy surrounding the NYC-blogger-approved NYC band A Brief Smile. From CMJ.com:
When New York City band A Brief Smile walked into WFNY, 92.3 Free FM's studios last week for "Talent Tuesdays" on The Dog House's morning show, they were expecting their first shot at commercial radio play. But what they experienced was something quite different. Upon entering the studio for their interview, bassist John Carnes made a comment about the decline in quality of the station. As a result, the show's two hosts, Jeff Vandergrift ("JV") and Dan Lay ("Elvis"), shot back with relentless insults, calling him a "pansy" and eventually "a faggot."Underrated has an MP3 of the whole show. There's also a post about this at Gothamist and at WFMU. What do you think?

bv, watch out.. the idiotic people who actually listen to this program started a hate tirade/homophobic parade on my site following a post about the incident, it was awful.
hope they don't do the same to you.

they're morning shock jocks, exactly what did you expect them to do?

it's obvious that these guys wake up every morning and feel that their manhood is threatened.
so i encourage everyone, by all means, to keep threatening their manhood as often as possible.
OR lube it up and make it happen like destiny says it should.

"OR lube it up and make it happen like destiny says it should."
DING.
But after hearing Billy Packer say "fag" on CHARLIE ROSE last week, I seem to think that we are still a few years from all "getting it" that this word is emblematic of pure bigotry.

Just in response to the Billy Packer incident, his use of the word "fag" was not a gay insult. The word "fag" when used as a verb means to tire out. That's what he meant when he said Charlie Rose always fags out, and that's also why Charlie Rose and him laughed it up and Charlie didn't bother correcting him. It had nothing to do with gay people, just like a few years ago when there was a controversy over the word niggardly, which although it may sound racist really isn't.
As for this incident, the guy in the band was absolutely right about the decline of the station. 92.3 is unlistenable now. K-Rock wasn't exactly the greatest station on earth, but at least they used to play music before they became Free-FM. The truth hurts sometimes, and these moronic DJs just couldn't handle that much truth.

That band sucks and the bassist was acting like a huge dickhead. You get an opportunity for people to listen to shitty ass music and you go ahead and act like you are too cool for the radio station you our promoting your band on. What a jerkoff that kid is.

so the bassist was ungrateful because he made an honest assessment of the radio station’s decline thus justifying the homophobic rant? No, the truth is that these djs are the jerks and come off as desperate to keep their measly audience awake by yelling fag. Their denials of being homophobic comes off as disingenuous. Get Sirius.
