ahhh, nothin like williamsburg hipsters not from new york complaining about who comes into their area.

Isn't that cute? The UM and DB tickets go on sale on 4/20 at 4:20 pm. I bet the stoner who came up with that idea was given extra munchies.
Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2007 11:29 AM
seriously, why compain so much about this show? whether you like them or not, Umphrey's and Bisco will sell more tickets than most of the pool concerts. most of the jam kids are into all kinds of music, they don't have such a hatred for other scenes like some of the indie kids do. i just don't get it. if you don't like them, don't buy a ticket. i saw deerhoof and the pool last year and it was the most horrible thing i've ever seen. way worse than any bisco show, and i don't even like bisco.

I hate hippies. Mercy, I hate hippies. Especially the neo-hippies who are tree huggers and trust fund kids at the same time.

I got dumped by a hippie once.

The Biscuits will bring the untz that will shake the foundation of the Pool to its core...perhaps even shaking a couple pools from your uptight hipster asses.
The music the disco biscuits produce is too progressive and complex for many hipsters to fully comprehend. They aren't gonna be a flavor of the month on any of your favorite blogs and will be around longer than a minute. Its not music you can wrap your mind around based on a pitchfork review and a single track stream.
Jam is dead. The Unzz is alive and will grab your inner organs through your ear.

What's with the Crooked Rain -> Free Williamsburg -> BV knock on hippies, can't we all just get along. Didn't know there was this backlash. BTW, the hippie crowd which has existed in Williamsburg/Greenpoint (NYC in general) much longer is now older and way more experienced than 20-somethings looking to find themselves being cool and using W'burg/G'point as their playground, why doesn't Free Williamsburg print that somewhere.
Posted by rescueblues | April 19, 2007 12:34 PM
It's not like Built to Spill are enemies of the jam (that is, the form of musical improvisation, not Paul Weller or mashed up fruit). I think Free Wllmsbrg was once touched by Bob Weir. They also made some complaint about the cloud of patchouli headed towards prospect park. Ani's got dreds, sure, but what else is there? Ralph Stanley? Manu Chao? I think they're confused and should instead turn their blind rage towards the LiveNationization of publick lands. Or Gap jeans. Really, it's all about keeping the integrity of that fair neighbourhood.

Joe, go on jambase and look at the comments of articles that cover indie stuff. Alot of negative stuff.

no backlash here.

Damn...while I admit I'm not so much into the jam band scene since Phish broke up (and maybe since I don't take drugs like I used to)...why all the hatred for the scene? Bisco and Umphreys are EXTREMELY talented musicians!! Anyone who actually plays music knows this.
This reaction to them playing in BK is the epitome of everything I hate about the NYC indie scene. If you don't like it, then say it's not for you; but don't say it sucks. That's just ridiculous.
And for the record, I'd much rather be at a show with some f'ed up, drug induced hippies noodling around than stand next to some dude with his hands in his pockets and head ever-so-slightly bobbing up and down. The whole indie scene needs to loosen up hardcore, both mentally and physically!

while the disco biscuits may not have a clue when it comes to song writing and are even worse at putting an album together their shows are more fun than 99% of the bands that get attention on BV
Long Live Bisco!!!
Posted by coming out bisco | April 19, 2007 1:33 PM
nice point drugs delaney :) the "hippy" kids or whatever just don't take themselves SO seriously all the time. in general i feel a much looser, party vibe at those shows and the "in between" bands like wilco, mmj and flaming lips. and to the previous post about jambase.com , i see the negative stuff there as well, but it's a comments section. people love to talk trash there, just live here at BV in real life most of those kids are down to listen to all kinds of music from bluegrass to hip hop, same with the indie kids. i think it's small subsets that are the angry ones.

They don't even have their facts straight. Aside from the fact that Live Nation has no connection to Clear Channel anymore, it's not even a Live Nation show. It's a Bowery show. Way to go guys!
Posted by B | April 19, 2007 3:58 PM
Er, Live Nation shares a board of directors, a payroll plan and a benefits plan with Clear Channel. Not to mention being codefendants in a federal anti-trust lawsuit. They 'spun off" Live Nation as an attempt to get out of the lawsuit, then Live Nation just got added to the indictment.

Free Williamsburg seems to treat "jambands" like some horrific pock mark on his cool-meter. That sentiment is absurd and rather pathetic. First off, the term jamband (much like the term "indie") is a utterly vague misnomer that is not a good way to describe a genre. It does not make sense to lump Sound Tribe Sector 9 (live electronica) with Yonder Mountain String Band (Improvisational Bluegrass). And the "Pathcouli" comment is perhaps the most over-used and silly way in which to insult hippies I have ever heard. I've been to plenty of "hippie" (has there even been "hippies since the early 70's?) shows and don't even know what patchouli is.
The fact is, there are good and bad bands in every genre. But for members of the indie rock community to discredit jambands as a rule is utterly retarded. Jambands have been more successful shunning any influence of the mainstream music industry upon their business or art. That is precisely the goal of any indie band worth their weight. Furthermore, purposeful imporvisation (not aimless noodling) can be among the most exciting aspects of music in general.
Also, Free Williamsburg ought to open his mind a little bit and stop making generalizations about fans. If you don't like the Disco Biscuits or Umphrey's, fine. Critique the aspects of their music that you don't like. But it is pointless and idiotic to lump fans into being Long Island stoners with trust funds that are there only for drugs. Get a life...
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2007 10:15 AM
Im no bisco fan or Umphrees fan but really if you cant improv and sound good doing it...What kind of musician are you anyways.
People must open thier minds to different styles of music. From free form jazz to slipnot. If they cant accept other styles and have to be vocal about it, chances are they are trendy people trying to be different...and not doing a good job at it. But most of the time their musical influences are just not to musical themselves.
So let them hate...good music will still be heard by the people who appreciate it anyways.

I hope you're not serious....Where CANT you get weed in Manhattan!!!!!!
Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2007 1:57 PM
could there be a bigger all-out wank fest??? Bisco might hold the title of "worst vocals ever".... not to mention "worst scene ever"
if you don't know how bad these guys really are, check out this video they put up on YouTube: (warning: this is fucking painful)

UM is a close 2nd behind Bisco when it comes to all-out-sucking, but at least they seem to be nice dudes. from my experiences, the bisco crew can be ROYAL Douche Bags. they honestly believe they are the fucking cats meow.

HIPPIES SUCK. My first day of college (at SUNY-ESF which is hippie heaven) I saw a hippie pushed down a flight of steps by some straight edge kids. Needless to say I made some new straightedge friends that day.

I eat hippies for breakfast and shit them out when I get to work.

Reading some of these comments just reminded me of how many really stupid people there are out there. Music is music - if it sounds good, its good; hippies are hippies - they can dirttwirl or treehug, who cares; uptight people...suck - get your panties out of a bunch and loosen the f up.

hippies are responsible for all the wars
Posted by jGarcia | July 1, 2007 3:39 PM
As a recovering hippie, the most disapointing thing about that scene is that is was without a doubt about the drug use.. sure there was a veneer of music of pseudo-life philosophy of good vibes, and even some loose and ineffective political concern, but the number one thing, why everyone was at a phish show, or at the early years of bonnaroo was to take mushrooms and nitrous. And while thats completely benevolent and harmless, unlike some punk scenes for instance, its also useless and makes for terrible music. Its a drop out scene, a way to shut out of an admittedly messed up society into fairy land, and while I found that a refreshing break for a few days every year, its not a life style or a philisophy of any substance. Its just hedonism, and while "hipsterdom" also often slips into that excess sometimes in a form of nihilism, many people I know have found ways to stay involved in this world, and do something about how messed up it is in some small way, whether in art, volunteer work, teaching... etc... and while some hippies are involved in that, it is by and large, I found, not the ethos of the culture, so I think it is fair to have disdain for that, just as its fair to have disdain for the false-nihilism of trust-fund hipsters. If you can identify the injustice of the world, you should produce something that helps to combat it, even in a small way, not just drop out, because that is just exercising the privelage those injustices grant you. Maybe thats judgemental of me, so be it.

Hippies? Indie scene? You are what you are. The generalizations here are unimportant, uninteresting. None of these words grant the variety that exists.
UM is a band that plays music that some people like. Deerhoof is a band that some people like, and they play music too. Guns 'N Roses is a band that used to play music that some people like. There is no use in arguing over what kind of music is better or more valid. You can turn music on and off, rewind, fast-forward, slam the volume, buy a ticket, not buy a ticket, etc. It's an art that is highly interactive and therefore gives you more control. If you don't like it, just go to what you like and get on with it.
I've seen Umphrey's 4 times and I've had a great time at almost every show. If you like dancing in seemingly illogical ways and incredible guitar, check them out. If you don't appreciate these things, the show might be better off without you.
Posted by brendan | July 14, 2007 12:24 PM
If you don't enjoy Umphrey's and the Disco Biscuits, you lose.
These aren't "hippies."
Umphreys will rock your brain out of your head.
Posted by GyroLover | July 23, 2007 12:15 PM
The biscuits aren't that great on disc, but live they are amazing.
Umphreys is "thinking man's" music, they might be the best kept secret in all of rock. If you enjoy classical, jazz, rock, trance, and pretty much really good music that isn't pop...I would be surprised if you don't like Umphrey's McGee.
For the haters....well, it must suck to live life and not really enjoy music. It can really be a powerful thing, if you can ride the wave.

To all you "hippie" bashing indie kids out there, i dont know what you're problem with DB and UM playing in your area. Maybe you can help me out? Like others have said..dont like em, dont see em. or maybe you should and try something different..if you can get away from your 3am Denny's coffee sesh. Also, i challenge anyone to find a negative article written on Umphreys music

"if you can get away from your 3am Denny's coffee"
We don't have Dennys over here. Shows you how much you know.

I was about to say the same thing. Dennys? Maybe in Jersey.
This guy sounds like the types that hang out in front of the Grays Papaya on west 72nd asking for spare change. They only come out of the woodwork during the summer because the winters here are just too inconvenient for them.

Last I saw Umphrey's was on an independent label.
