i love BrooklynVegan, but offering up some companion music for today's events trivializes the situation, don't you think? it's one thing if you post "another one bites the dust" for the Imus debacle or something, but MP3s alongside the links to the news reports...i dunno, seems a little iffy to me.

sometimes music is a good way to cope. my friend there, luckily, is safe, but i worry about when her shock wears off. what a horrible scene.

well maybe jason black, but BV is goodhearted and would never purposely trivialize a tragedy. He is just making note of it on his blog, posting in a way he knows how to relate. Its not going to be like CNN.com with a full report. It's more like a tribute, to commemorate. Hey, I stay away from the news but read BV religiously so it's always helpful when something non-musical is highlighted, because I definitely trust his opinions.
It's so horrible so I hope people don't fight about it. Let's just breath it in, digest, and have gratitude.

there's always an asshole.

I will say that Clipse mp3 was a little tacky. And yes, music is a good way to cope but not Clipse.

hey BV nice work. you had this posted before drudge AND before it even got to the front of google news.

maybe Neko Cases' "the Virginian"

what a sad day. Why?
Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2007 10:17 PM
yes, by putting a Clipse mp3 up, Brooklyn Vegan has severely compromised the integrity of blogging. When I go online I expect the snark to stop when innocent, hard-bodied college students can't rip bingers and date-rape finger-blast. F this whole news story (with the exception that it buried the Imus and Duke stories by its 33 weighty pounds).
Also, I find it odd you find Clipse offensive. Two of my favorite albums to get me through hard times have been The Cold Vein and Liquid Swords. But I guess that makes me a bigger asshole because I listen to hiphop for distraction.

how about "search and destroy"?
douche move, bv.

When I consider what happened today in Virginia and subsequently on the web in the form of posts such as this, I marvel at the way that technology has evolved to help us cope with the strange and terrifying realities of life. I appreciate BV's effort to offer both a musical commemoration and a space for us to talk about a very painful event.
Another great post @ IGIF:

Stupid liberal assholes trying to make this into a political issue and infer that this blood is on Republican hands. Don't forget about the people that do bear arms and protect their families from intruders in their homes. There is nothing you can do to protect against a crazy person that decides to just start shooting. If he wanted a gun, whether it's legal or not to own them, he would have found one anyways. Don't even try to make this into a political issue.

I mean, if we have to get technical, the President was the one to bring it up out of nowhere in his press release.
It was a pre-emptive strike against the gun debate firing up whenever something like this happens, but still.
BTW, its usually the Republican's who are assholes, the liberals are just wusses.

Fair point Reg. Although I'd say most politicians are self-serving assholes regardless of party lines.

Virginia allows concealed weapons but VT just recently banned weapons on campus. If just one student had been armed with sufficient training this could have been nipped in the bud.
Of course the local DA would have then tossed that hero in jail - for life if they didn't come from money.

"Leave Virginia Alone"

how is it not a political issue?
over 30,000 deaths/year in America due to guns. Owning a gun is legal in America.
less than 200 deaths/year in the UK. Owning a gun is illegal in the UK.
what an amazing coincidence

YEAHHHHHHH! One student...with the right training...a loner...a rebel...who wouldn't take it lying down...ANY MORE!
Better start watch something a little less simplistically black-and-white than "Red Dawn", Mr. Muscularly Huge NRA Detective.
WOLVERIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINES!!!

No one is stopping you from moving to the UK.

You can't even attend a soccer game in the U.K. without hooligans wilding on innocent fans. You can have your foolish monarchy, at least it sells your "newspapers."
Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2007 10:54 PM
whatever, anyway if every student there had a concealed weapon of his/her own, none of this, or at least a lot less of this, would have occurred. it's not fewer guns we needed on that campus, it's more. remember, guns don't kill people...
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2007 4:09 PM
^^^lol...dumbest comment ever...yes, let's make everyone carry a gun, no one will ever fire one.

"No one is stopping you from moving to the UK."
I fancy moving to Canada (from the U.S.) myself, but guess what: they (and the UK) have restrictions on immigration, just like we do.
Besides, now that the U.S. has screwed up Iraq something awful, I believe that any American who's fed up with his or her countrymen has an obligation to other people in this world to stay here and try to change U.S. policies towards the rest of the world.
